Well, I think it's pretty much obvious now that the anime writers are hellbent on removing all sorts of Tsubasa reference from this series because once again, a cross-over scene which originally appeared in the manga has now been eliminated from this version. I am not too happy about this but since my main interest in following this series has nothing to do with Tsubasa, I figure it's not that big of a loss. I am a lot more concerned about any modification that the writers do on some of the darker storyline. Thankfully, this time around they seem to keep most things intact, Tsubasa nothwithstanding. As long as the series remains as dark and creepy as the original manga, I think I'll still be interested in it. Animation-wise, this week is a mark improvement over last week's episode. I'm also quite amused to see Chobits joke that is contained in this episode. It helps that Doumeki looks a bit like Hideki and there's a reference to A City With No People storybook here.

The episode begins with Watanuki and Yuuko playing baseball in a park. But because of her enthusiasm, Yuuko ends up smashing the glass window of someone's house. Watanuki is not happy about this especially when Yuuko asks him to pick the ball. His mood, however, turns 180 degrees for the better when Himawari also arrives at the park. Yuuko immediately greets Himawari and after introducing herself, asks Himawari what kind of help she wants to obtain. Because of this, Himawari tells Yuuko that it actually has to do with her friend's high school. Apparently the school has been a bit weird lately because many students have been playing Angel-san. Yuuko explains that the game is actually called Kokkuri-san but regardless of the name, she thinks that it is a rather dangerous game to play. Yuuko agrees to take on the case but ends up passing it onto Watanuki. She, however, believes that she needs one more person to help Watanuki.

At the same time, Watanuki is not happy having to do the investigation himself. He, however, changes his mind after Yuuko tells him that if she had taken the case herself, Himawari will have to pay her. Watanuki immediately realises that if that happens, Himawari will be in Yuko's clutches. Despite this, Watanuki doesn't like the fact that he will have to go on this mission with Doumeki. On top of this, Yuuko has prepared a special headphone in the form of Chii's (of Chobits) robotic ears. Cue in the twins reciting the story from A City With No People for a good crossover measure. Watanuki at first refuses to wear the headphone but in the end has no choice but to bear the shame as he meets Doumeki while wearing the item. Through the headphone, Yuuko asks Watanuki to deliver her greetings to Doumeki. After introducing herself, she asks Doumeki to take care of Watanuki tonight. She believes that as long as Watanuki is with Doumeki, he won't be in danger.

This, of course, annoys Watanuki to no end but he decides to go on with his mission. However, upon climbing the school's fence, he notices a large black spirit circling the school. Doumeki, however, can't see this so Watanuki thinks that the other guy doesn't believe him. Once the two are inside the school, they decide to follow the black spirit by climbing through one of the class' windows. Watanuki immediately smells something bad once he gets inside although it appears Doumeki can't smell a thing. The two eventually make their way to the rooftop where Watanuki sees 3 girls in the middle of playing a game of Angel-san. The girls claim that they want to stop but they can't because if they do, they'll be cursed. But they're also mortified because the pen is forcing them to write that they'll keep doing this until they die. In the end, Watanuki has no choice but to pull their hands apart when the pen starts to violently jerk the girls' hand.

The girls are mortified upon being separated and start to scream around. Because of this Watanuki asks Doumeki to help him calming the girls down but much to his horror, Watanuki can't see any girl in the rooftop. The girls quickly reveal themselves as evil spirit and they proceed to push Watanuki off the rooftop. Before Watanuki can plummet down to his death, however, Doumeki manages to catch his hand. They, however, are far from safe because the spirit has now morphed into its true form and starts to hurt Doumeki's hand, causing it to bleed. Through the headphone, Yuuko warns Watanuki not to approach them because they are not humans. She tells Watanuki that they are actually just accumulated garbage from the many sessions of Angel-san. The game is actually a form of spirit summoning but because it's done at an amateur level, nothing ever actually appears. Because of this, some students wished that something bad would happen so that things will get interesting.

While listening to Yuuko's explanation, however, Watanuki notices the black spirit that he saw hovering around the school earlier has appeared underneath him. Yuuko tries to explain that the snake is the guardian of the school but Watanuki can't seem to hear her voice. Just when things look grim, however, the black spirit morphs into a snake-shaped spirit, which proceeds to devour the leftover spirit that is trying to injure Doumeki. Doumeki uses the opportunity to pull Watanuki up into the rooftop. Unfortunately in the process of saving Watanuki, the headphone gets thrown far away from the two. To make things worse, the snake then corners the two and makes them unable to move. Luckily for the boys, Yuuko's voice suddenly appears through the headphone, asking the snake to devour the headphone as a sacrifice instead. Upon hearing this, the snake eats the headphone and slithers away from Watanuki and Doumeki.

After the snake left, Watanuki tells Doumeki that he doesn't care if Doumeki doesn't believe what he says. Much to his surprise, however, Doumeki tells him that even though he couldn't see anything he believed in Watanuki. Doumeki claims that if Watanuki says that these things exist, then they also exist to him. He, however, also adds that Watanuki is pathetic for complaining about them, causing the other guy to become angry again. Later on during a picnic, Yuuko explains that even though the snake saved them, it's not exactly a saviour of their life. The snake basically appeared because it was searching for Watanuki. To the snake, Watanuki is one tasty snack. This is why it's important for Watanuki to be near Doumeki. When Watanuki refuses, Yuuko points out that Doumeki saved his life. Watanuki is frustrated about this latest development but can't do anything apart from complaining about it. The episode then ends with Yuuko saying that things will get interesting from now on.

Impression:

Himawari seems to be a rather mysterious character here. It seems strange to me that she went out of her way to ask Yuuko to help her friend's school while the friend in question never came to ask for help directly. I wonder if she actually did this on purpose. I also wonder why Yuuko didn't grant Himawari's wish right away even though she's capable of it. Is it because she wants to force Watanuki to work together with Doumeki or is it because of something else entirely? Either way, Watanuki and Doumeki seem to work rather well together despite the occasional irritation on Watanuki's part. This episode also establishes the fact that despite his constant sarcastic remark towards Watanuki, Doumeki actually believes the other guy's words. The most interesting part of this episode is the concept of Kokkuri-san itself. I guess it's some kind of Ouija board only this one is done with pen and paper. The entire thing for some reason reminds me of The Exorcist.

I think my only problem with this episode is the way the demonic spirits are represented. Most of them usually appear in the form of a cloud or an abstract shape. In the manga, they look great but in the anime, they look like one giant mess. In general, however, I'm glad that the anime decides to keep the creep factor from the manga this time around. I would have been sorely disappointed if they actually don't show the blood flowing from Doumeki's hand. I hope that they'll continue this in future episodes. Anyway, I'm not sure if the anime will ever show the ghost story chapter from the manga but next week episodes tell the fake fortune teller story from the first volume. But if the first season turns out to be only 13 episodes in length then I assume the anime writers only want to use some of the best stories from the manga. I just hope that they'll have the time to cover the Monkey's paw chapter of the series since that's one of my favourite stories from this series.

Wahh~ Thank you very much indeed for the summary~

The animation looks far better indeed than the previous episode (thank gosh!)m I'm loving the screencaps ^^

I kinda expected they would cut the Tsubasa links of this one too... not sure if they will add stuff for later in the series.

So they kept the Chobits Book? Wahh I'm so glad ^___^

Yeah, they kept all of the Chobits reference intact. I suspect if there is other non-Tsubasa reference, we will see it in this series. And I'm glad they're not hesitant in showing the darker side of the story this time around.

Indeed ! I'm glad they kept the girls with their creepy faces, that's really creepy. And I loved how the snake is looking here...

Maybe we'll see Kazahaya and Rikuou? Ah, I hope >.

In the manga did Himawari ever meet youko face to face?

April 20, 2006 | Garten wrote:

Yes, in the manga Himawari does meet Yuuko face to face. The difference is that this time around she meets Yuuko twice. Once at the start of the story and another one at the end of the story. They basically seperate the baseball game between Yuuko and Watanuki with the picnic that they have with Doumeki. They put the picnic at the end of the episode to pad the story a little bit (since they cut out a lot of Tsubasa material)

Mmm...interesting episode

though I would prefere those Chobits ears to be a little more well illustrated. Hope that would happen...

Oh, I was wondering of you can post the Fate/Stay Night thing first opening up again. I missed that one - Fate/Stay Night seems to be such a great series.

xxxHolic... mmmm. you dissapoint me.

Thank you!

I was wondering if you have seen the widescreen ver. of xxxHolic? I haven't seen it yet and I was wondering if it will make any difference.

April 20, 2006 | Garten wrote:

I've been looking for it but I can't seem to find any. Judging from Syoboi's schedule, it seems BS-i channel, which usually screens Widescreen version of a series, doesn't screen xxxHOLiC until next week (27/4). So maybe we'll be able to see the widescreen version after that date.

Thanks for this! I'm glad the story's still as creepy as it is. Last week was rather a disappointment. I'm so glad this week's better.

But do you think they'll include the part when all of them were telling ghost stories at Doumeki's place? T_T

This is the first manga I have seen adapted to anime from 3 volumes to 3 episodes O_o... they even skipped the ghost stories telling night... (they truly want to destroy Tsubasa Chronicles traces from the story =_=)

Ah, it's good to know that this episode is a lot better than last week's episode. And Doumeki x Watanuki!! XD

Having read 8 of the volumes in one day, I consider myself an xxxHolic master at this point. LOL! I just wanted to say that ommiting the tie-ins with Tsubasa doesn't bother me as much as I thought it would have. I would prefer it if the anime was an accurate adaptation though.

Anyways, the manga chapters don't seem to develop the story that fast. I think it's a CLAMP thing... I can't wait to find out what's going on with Watanuki, Doumeki and Himawari.

Something else, is there slash between Watanuki and Doumeki? Or is it just me? I guess it's a CLAMP thing once again :P

Great summary! :) I'm now excited for this one. I must be downloading. Haha. :)

I hate the fact that there wouldn't be any Tsubasa reference. Tsubasa's the reason why I read xxxHOLiC... Hehe.

I'm normally all for slashing CLAMP's hot men but there are just two pairings which don't work for me: Kurogane/Fai and Doumeki/Watanuki. To me these four characters feel sexless. Plus, they couldn't be more different from their counterpart that I don't find their banter sexy. It's more like annoying.

There's a shot of the monkey's paw in the opening so it'll most likely be there eventually. I think there's a shot that's part of the ghost stories too.

I think they'll do the ghost story scene. There was that brief clip in the opening of a shadow on the other side of Doumeki's door trying to break it. But really, they should do these things in order! >

The animation does infact look better in this mainly because, I think (also from what I've seen in other series) that the animators finally have gotten the hang of each of the characters. I really like this episode mainly because it shows alot of my thoughts about the relationship between Yuuko, Watanuki and Doumeki, I've developed over reading (And rereading) the manga and researching. Yuuko is much more mysterious in and of herself than most people register(If you think about it since she's the Dimentional Space and Time witch one isn't entierly sure how old she is...consitering she knew Clow and he died....about a hundred years ago or so...) so it follows that her reasonings for using Watanuki often seem pretty obvious but in fact really aren't. What struck *me* as intresting is that everytime Yuuko sends Watanuki off by himself to do something she doesn't want to do or "Can't" do she's *always* there to coach him or has somehow given him something to get him through the ordeal. It's almost as if she's training...an assistant.... (maybe even a little brother she likes to torture in some cases) Sure he's trying to get rid of his 'power' but somehow in the long run I don't think (after all of this) he'll actually be able to willingly give it up. He's seen that his powers could be very useful (when applied correctly) and as the manga goes on he begins to get more and more confident (if not less and less easily irritated but even that lessens to a degree when he's with Yuuko) in going about doing what he has to do even goes out on several occasions willingly using his powers. I think Doumeki (at the moment) is his training wheels and insurance that she doesn't loose him and it's simply a nice perk that it rubs her charge the wrong way. He's also company, as she might actually have been alittle lonely...let's face it Moro and Maru aren't really big conversation holders from what we're shown and then don't (can't) leave the house. But then those are my thoughts.

Wait, so there isn't going to be any Tsubasa crossovers. No appearance by our lovely Tsubasa crew? That's dissapointing. :(

April 25, 2006 | Android 21 3/7 wrote:

Hmmm... Do you really think they'll keep that creep factor from now on? The lying woman survived, the three crying girls on the roof weren't real, and Doumeki injured his arm. A bleeding arm injury isn't as serious or creepy as a dead body. I hope that the anime will keep the same tone of dreaded foreboding with the same results.

Don't get me wrong...I love this series but I just can't feel the creepy factor here! These stories, after reading the 8 volumes, remind me more of like mushishi, except just trying to explain phenonmenons in a more mystical way.

BTW, what happen to Mushishi!!! It's been weeks.....-_-

"Kokkuri-san". Yuuko is right in saying that it is a dangerous game.

I've not seen the anime, but in the manga it is accurately presented, except that you should replace the Japanese "aiueo" etc with the English alphabet. Likewise the way the girls hold the pen is accurate, though there is a way to play it with 3 people.

It is a game that I would recommend that you DO NOT TRY PLAYING AT ALL, because even though it is said that when the spirit goes back to the "home" (the symbol that looks like a....signboard thingy? In the manga) it is safe to let go of the pen because the spirit is gone....that isn't necessarily true.

Take the "DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME, EVER" as a word of advice from someone who has suffered from it, and has seen people suffering due foolishness and overconfidence with regards to this "game".
