This story sure brings back memory of the time when I was camping with a bunch of friends and we ended up telling horror stories to freak each other out. Unfortunately, I'm not really good at this but I decide to jot down what I was telling my friends back then in the entry below. If you have some scary contribution then I'd definitely like to read it too. The episode itself looks surprisingly good this time around. The muted colour pallete that characterises the series seem to work quite well in delivering the Ghost Story part of the episode. I also wonder if the animators have been holding off telling this story so that it'll coincide with the arrival of Summer in Japan. Technically though, it's still rainy season over there right now.
It's summer and the heatwave starts to make everyone including Yuuko suffers. Watanuki, on the other hand, is more concerned about finding away to get out with Himawari. Because of this, Yuuko suggests a group date. One where they all get together to play a game called 100 Ghost Stories. Watanuki at first objects to the idea especially since it means they'll have to go to Doumeki's temple in order to do this. In the end, however, he is left with no choice. Because of this, Yuuko decides to do a preparation for it by placing a bowl of water and several candles inside the temple to create a barrier. She then tells everyone that all of the players have now present. Because of this Himawari starts the game by telling everyone the story about a husband who accidentally killed his wife during an argument and decided to cover it up by telling his son that his mother is away. As a result, throughout the day the son keeps asking his father when his mother will be back.

However, the next day, the son does not say anything. After one week, the father decides to ask his son if not having his mother makes him sad. The son looks at him in confusion and tells him that his 'mother' has always been beside his father. When the father looks back, he sees his supposedly dead wife smiling eerily at him. Watanuki looks scared upon hearing this so Doumeki tells Himawari that at least one person is scared after hearing her story. The next turn is Doumeki's. So he decides to recount the story that he heard from his grandfather. There was a student who lived all alone inside an old apartment. Everytime he sleeps, he always hears scratching noise. It sounds like someone is walking around inside his room. The guy decides to ask for a paranormal help and receives 4 pieces of Ofuda (paper-based talisman) to repel the ghost from the wall. Because of this, however, one night a thick black spirit materialises into the room and appears in front of the guy and tells him that the Ofuda is useless.
Watanuki becomes even more afraid upon hearing this but he wants to hear more. Unfortunately for him, that's all to the story. Yuuko then asks Doumeki if his grandfather is the main priest of this temple. Doumeki confirms this but also tells Yuuko that unfortunately he already passed away. Yuuko, however, wants to know if his grandfather can see spirits. Doumeki believes that to be the case because he often hears this kind of stories from his grandfather. Upon finding out about this, Yuuko tells Doumeki that in that case, his blood probably carries that ability as well. Watanuki is surprised to hear this but his attention is distracted by the now rattling noise coming from the room next door. He asks Doumeki who lives behind the door but much to his horror, Doumeki tells him that no one is there except a corpse. Watanuki then assumes that the noise probably comes from the window but Doumeki claims that there's no window in that room.

Yuuko reminds Watanuki that she did tell him that all of the players present in this room. Watanuki does not understand what she's talking about and tries to get Himawari to leave the room. Yuuko, however, tells him that is impossible to cross the Kekkai (barrier) until they complete the story. She explains that the four candles that they lit up currently provide a barrier protection for them but this is not the case once they step out of it. That means they can't get out until they finish the Hundred Ghost stories ceremony. Watanuki, however, reminds Yuuko that it's dangerous for him to tell any stories. But Yuuko points out the fact that so far he hasn't seen any spirit. The camera then pans into Doumeki suggesting that he could be the reason why this is the case. Yuuko then asks Himawari if it's okay if they continue the story. Himawari agrees because once they've started something, they better follow it to the end.
Meanwhile, the currently sleeping Mokona suddenly opens one of his eyes all of a sudden. No one else seems to notice this, however, because Yuuko decides to continue the game. Since the next in line is Watanuki. He decides to tell a story about a boy who encounters this strange tall man who carries an umbrella in the middle of a Yotsukado (intersection). However, when he gets to another intersection, he sees the tall man again. As a result, the boy slowly becomes afraid of the man. When the boy reaches the 3rd intersection, the tall man turns his head and looks at the boy, revealing his creepy eyes. And unfortunately, that's the end of the story. In addition to this, the story actually comes from Watanuki's own experience. Himawari wonders who that tall man could possibly be. Because of this, Doumeki tells her that the man is a ghost. Watanuki wonders if Doumeki can see spirits but that does not seem to be the case.

Yuuko, however, tells Watanuki that it was lucky that the boy did not encounter the man one more time (4 times). This is because she believes that 4 count is a count that communicate with the world of the dead. She then points out the fact that hospital (in Japan) usually don't have a sickroom number 4. Doumeki then explains that a long time ago, an intersection is called 「四つの世界」- Yotsu no Sekai (Four worlds). The word is often associated with 「死の世界」- Shi no Sekai (The world of the dead) because number four, 'Yotsu/Shi' 「四」 phonetically sounds similar to the word that represents Death, 'Shi' 「死」. Yuuko immediately praises Doumeki upon hearing the explanation. Doumeki, however, simply tells Yuuko that he just heard it from his grandfather. Yuuko then asks Watanuki what the boy did to get back home. Did he went forward or did he actually turned around and went the other way. Unfortunately Watanuki can't remember what he did.
Since everyone else has told a ghost story, the next one who gets to tell a story is Yuuko. But she instead asks the others what they see reflected on the Shoji (paper door) behind her. Watanuki suddenly panics when he sees the shadow of the tall man in the paper door. All of a sudden, they hear sounds coming from the roof and then the room suddenly shakes violently. Yuuko thinks that this is not earthquake because the water in the bowl is not moving at all. She believes that the barrier is in danger and all of a sudden, there's another quake, which propels Himawari into Doumeki's arms. Watanuki becomes jealous to see this but because of this, he does not notice that he's now standing in front of the paper door. Himawari tries to warn Watanuki that there's something behind him but it's too late because Watanuki has been grabbed by a bunch of hands. Upon seeing this, Yuuko instructs Doumeki to grab the bow that is located nearby.

She then tells Doumeki to point the bow at the paper door and fire at it. Doumeki is confused to hear this because he doesn't have an arrow with him but Yuuko assures him that he can do this. Because of this, Doumeki points the arrow and releases it, producing a golden arrow that pierces the spirit's head, which for some reason, looks a bit like Himawari's head. The spirit then turns into a fluffy mist, which comes out of the paper door. Upon seeing this, Yuuko orders Mokona to gulp the spirit so the little black ball happily sucks the spirit into its body. Everyone is grossed out to see this but Mokona seems happy to consume the spirit. After everything ends, everyone decides to have some watermelon to ease the heat of the summer night. When Watanuki sees Himawari playing with Mokona, he asks her if she's not afraid of it. Much to his surprise, Mokona does not phase Himawari at all. In fact, she thinks the creature is awesome.
Watanuki then wonders what Doumeki actually used to kill the spirit. Yuuko who overhears the conversation informs them that it was Doumeki's Chi (life energy). She believes that Doumeki possesses the ability to exorcise spirits. Yuuko thinks that this is an inheritance from his family so in a way, Doumeki is similar to Watanuki. Watanuki becomes livid to be compared with Doumeki but Yuuko reminds him that Doumeki has the ability to get rid of the spirit that often haunts Watanuki. The reminder, however, seems to annoy Watanuki even more. Watanuki eventually calms down and remembers that Yuuko had told them before that all of the players have gathered so he wants to know what she meant. Because of this, Yuuko explains that the corpse, Watanuki (the boy who can attract spirit), and Doumeki (a boy which can exorcise spirit) are some of those players. Upon hearing this, Watanuki wonders about Himawari's role. Yuuko suddenly looks concerned and is about to tell Watanuki about Himawari. She, however, changes her mind and decides not to tell Watanuki about her.

Impression:
I really like this episode because I find some perverse enjoyment in scaring myself silly from time to time. I remember not being able to sleep for a couple of hours after seeing Ju-On and yet I can't seem to resist a good horror story. Speaking of 'horror', avoid the new version of The Omen at all cost and go watch the original instead. Anyway, I think this is a lot more interesting than last week's episode. There are several character development given to both Doumeki and Himawari here. For Doumeki, this episode is the start of his role as Watanuki's personal exorcist, so to speak. In a way, what the fortune teller told Watanuki back in episode four and what Yuuko told her on last week's episode finally becomes a reality here. Watanuki seems to be fated to share a connection with Doumeki whether he likes it or not. In this case, the connection is actually beneficial because Doumeki's presence seems to exorcised any spirit that latches onto Watanuki.
This, however, brings me back to Himawari. I realise that I've talked about her strange presence ever since episode 3. But that is because there seems to be more to her than just a normal high school student. Back in episode 8, she single-handedly unsealed the monkey paw's container, which supposedly has been sealed with a powerful magic. In addition to this, she also managed to open the locked office door even though other students tried and failed. In this episode, Yuuko mentions that it'll be difficult to go out with Himawari, making it sounds as if Himawari is some kind of a spirit or out of this world entity. She also considers Himawari as "one of the players" in a game that involves a corpse, a boy that attracts spirit (Watanuki), and another boy who can repel them (Doumeki). In addition to this, the spirit that Doumeki shoot with his arrow has a shadow, which resembles Himawari's figure (a girl with ponytails).

At the moment I'm guessing that she possesses the ability to unseal supernatural powers. The thing is, Yuuko doesn't seem to be overly concerned about Himawari. While it's true that Yuuko does not always tell the entire story, she usually tends to warn Watanuki if she feels that he will be in danger for associating himself with a particular person. In addition to this, if Himawari is a spirit, technically Doumeki's presence would have repelled her and he would not be able to see her form to begin with. And yet, Doumeki seems to interact with Himawari without any difficulty. Anyway, it's interesting to see Yuuko conducting a Hundred Ghost story game during summer because it's also the same time when The Obon Festival (the Festival of the Dead) happens in Japan. The festival, which usually is celebrated either in July or August, is claimed to be the gateway for dead ancestors to visit their relatives. As a result, the festival is perfect for telling scary ghost stories.
Ghost Story contribution:
A guy is walking together with his date late at night, hoping that he will get invited into her apartment. Much to his disappointment, however, the woman simply thanks him for the night before going back to her apartment on her own. The guy is annoyed because he didn't get to 'score' with her. Because of this, he decides to go to a nearby lake to see if there is any good-looking woman he can get lucky with. He, therefore, becomes excited when he saw a woman with a sexy body standing all alone at the bridge looking down into the lake. The guy decides to approach the woman and asks her what she is doing all alone late at night like this. Upon getting closer, however, he realises that the woman is crying, covering her face with both of her hands. She tells him while sobbing her way through, that her boyfriend has just broken up with her. The guy, who sees opportunity, decides to play it smooth by offering his sympathy for her and condemning her ex-boyfriend.
The guy tells her that he finds it hard to believe that a hot-blooded man will be stupid enough to dump a sexy woman like her. The woman tells him that she can't blame her boyfriend because she doesn't have something that other women have. The man tells her that is the biggest nonsense he's ever heard because as far as he can see, she has a perfect body. He then persuades the woman to stop crying by telling her that if he were her boyfriend, he will never stop loving her. Upon hearing this, the woman takes her hands off her face, revealing the fact that she's faceless. She asks the guy if he will still love her now. The guy freaks out and runs as far away as he can from the woman until he meets a late night street vendor. He then breathlessly tells the vendor that he just saw a woman with no face. Upon hearing this, the vendor turns around and asks the guy if the woman's face looks like him, revealing that he doesn't have a face either.
*curious to watch it* Thanks ! *-* Glad they kept Mokona swallowing the spirit ball ! But I see they changed a little the ghostly stories O.o
Yeah, they're pretty good actually. Sorry I didn't have the chance to post the story because I had an errand to run. But I'm back now so I can type in the details.
Hmmm... I'm surprised that they didn't incorperate one of the other stories (like the one with the hands that only spiritually strong people could see). Also, I'm a little sad that they changed the shadow behind Yuuko. In the manga, that shadow looked like Yuuko and I thought that it was something from her past.
*Note: This comment was written before Garten wrote up the details...*
The ghost story you told is like that incident in Hayao Miyazaki's Pom Poko where the tanuki try to scare the humans away. One of them is through renacting that faceless ghost story.
I think the writers changed the shadow because they want to connect it with Watanuki's experience of meeting the tall man in the intersection. It appears that if you meet the tall man 4 times, you're in trouble.
Haha, so my ghost story was as unoriginal as I thought it was. Oh well, it was worth a try :D
I love scary stories, and I'm glad that in the animation they are giving more of a clue to who Himawari-chan really is. In the recent manga I was left to wonder...
As for a story of my own? Hnn...when I was little I was staying at my friend's home when I heard a mirror shatter in her bathroom [in the middle of the night]. It was enough to wake me up, and since I was still in primary school I didn't want to see what it was alone.
We got up, after some prodding and tears, but all the mirrors in the house (as well as windows, glasses, anything with sound like glass) were not broken or even slightly chipped. But the next day we found glass shards all over the bed we had been sleeping in, it was so scary!!
Ju-On is one creepy ass movie, and ranks up there as one of the scariest movies of all time on my list. It was actually your post back in '04 that lead me to seek out a DVD copy of it and scare the crap out of my older sister and my niece. What fun!
It's too bad they didn't include the hotel ghost story in the episode that was in the manga, I thought that was particularly creepy.
I must say, I do like how they've kept this closer to the original source material in some ways (the spirits arriving, the body in the other room, etc), while changing the ghost stories a bit - it doesn't detract from the episode at all.. and the way Himiwari seems to trigger misfortunes for Watanuki's made a little plainer here, which I like - especially given the story from volume 8 of the manga.
Still... I do wish they'd made more use of the budget on the character designs - Mokona's not quite as... adorable.. as he is in the manga. Otherwise, the others looked pretty close to what they did in the manga.
I can't wait to see this episode! I do kind wish that they kept Himawari's story. I'm sure the original stuff are good but I doubt they can top that particular tale's creepiness. And like zOMG they killed Baron Samedi! The Vodouns of the world are all going to be so pissed!
I'm wondering, which chapter of the manga is this episode based on? because I tried downloading some but I ended up with past episodes and episodes yet to be... Yeah.. I'm kinda lost in here. Can anyone give me some help?
Volume 2, Chapters 12-14
Yay! I was waiting for that episode to make it to the anime! I thought they would skip this arc at this point!
Here's my contribution to the horror stories:
Last year, I was driving back home from my girlfriend's apartment. As we live in different towns, I have to drive for a little while to get to my home. I didn't drink nor I was sleepy, but it was between 4 o 5 AM.
Suddenly, I saw some kind of person lying down on the road, the fact is, I didn't watch it soon enough, and I ran over it, causing my car to get out of the road and crash. As a result, I had some superficial scratches but ended up fairly dizzy.
When I was about to loose consciousness, I felt like the person on the road got up and stared at me and said in a weird voice "It's taken its toll".
When I regained consciousness, in hospital, the ambulance staff told me no corpse nor anything was on the road blocking the way.
Pretty good episode, though it is a little dissappointing that this came after we saw Fay's staff. I can't wait for episode 10.
My scary story isn't that scary at all, just a little wierd, like Watanuki's. In my old apartment building, the Heritage House, if someone stayed up late enough, around 1:00 AM, you would here echoes of voices, always saying, "Mom, mommy..." various renditions of mom, and hear footsteps on the carpet behind you. Every time you turned to look, though, there was nothing but the dark of night.
woah... David.. ur story is somewhat freaky, especially if someone experiences that occurence him/herself. And Miguel's story is really really freaky.. Yeah, I scare pretty easily. haha. Hey, I got one -
So last year I lived in an apartment with my younger cousin, and after about a month, really creepy stuff started happening. First, when we came home from a friend's house at night, we opened the door to see that some of our picture frames were shattered tho nothing else was moved or broken. It's safe to say that we couldn't sleep alone after that. Then another night, since my cousin and I moved into one bedroom, we wanted to clean up the empty room and that's when we noticed a hole in the wall where there never used to be one. It was so large we could put our whole hand through it. But of course, we couldn't feel or see anything on the other side. The next morning the whole was GONE. Like SERIOUSLY GONE. I WAS SO FREAKED! Then my cousin started closing and locking the bedroom door at night cuz she claimed to see a human figure at the door some nights. We moved out ASAP, cuz the manager didn't do anything about it everytime we told him. I will never get over that...
Anyway, I've definitely said enough, but this was SUCH a great episode! So fun to watch ^_^ Ju-On and The Omen are VERY SCARY movies :|
i just watched this ep, and it freaked me out! and reading all your ghost stories really freaked me out too! oh im such a scaredy cat.. as for my ghost story:
this happened about 2 years ago, i and my friend was walking around our neighbourhood, and since this friend of mine is a photography freak, he brought a digital camera with him. when we walked past an old house, he said 'this house is nice, i have to take a pic of it'. while he's taking pics, i saw a figure of a woman on the window, but i think it's the owner of the house so i didn't think of anything else about it. and when he's done taking it, we saw a woman with long black hair sitting on the verandah in the pic, which was not there! we were so freaked out that we just ran straight home. the next day, i heard that a woman was murdered in that house and no one has lived there since then..
i have to find some funny show to watch now, otherwise i won't be able to sleep tonight *sigh* anyway, watched Ju-On and couldn't sleep for a week lol Ju-On is the scariest scary movie i've ever seen!
EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKK. *goes to the corner to cower and hide....after switching on all the lights in her apartment*
I would love to tell you tons of ghost stories but I'm staying alone for a while at home now (parents away on business trips) and I'm frickin' scared coz I've had experiences before. (Sensed my dead grandma standing near her photograph in the living room once when I was studying there at 2am URK.) *shivers and cowers*
I haven't seen much of the anime yet, but I do have a creepy story to tell:
About ten years ago, my family and I lived in a house that was on a steep hill. One Christmas, my twin sister and I got a toy from our older brother, chris. It was a toy car (about a foot long) that have Wolverine of the X-Men riding in front. It was awesome, and came with batteries and a remote controller to make it move.
In the beginning, it was fun, we would mess around with it every day (we were around 6 or 7 at the time). One day, we broke it, sending Wolverine's head rolling across the floor.
At first we thought nothing of it until the next day. We pushed the toy car under a table so Chris wouldn't find out that we broke it, only to have in begin to move towards us. This happened several times over several days.
The thing is though, that we had the controller the entire time, had taken the batteries out (and had placed the car perpendicular to the slope of the hill so gravity could have no effect). And every single time the car would be following us. Once we measured it and it even moved about five feet from where we had placed it.
One day we even put it on the kichen counter (still perpendicular and nowhere near the edge) and it rolled off and onto the floor, landing on it's side.
No on ever believed us, cuz it never moved when someone else was in the room,
I don't have time to tell a long story but here's a short snip of another one.
One day a doctor was preparing to head home from work. He worked on the 11th floor of the hospital, so it was quite a long ride down in the elevator. This day however when he was taking the elevator down, it seemed to take longer then usual.....ALOT longer. It was taking so long the doctor was beginning to wonder if the elevator was broken or stuck, finally the elevator door opened on the 7th floor and a nurse walked in. "Thank goodness, at least it's moving" the doctor thought to himself. Another 5 min passed by and the door opened again this time on the 4th floor there was a lady who was about to enter but the doctor closed the elevator doors before she could walk in.
"Why did you do that" asked the nurse.
"Didn't you see the band on her wrist?, that's what we put on the people who are dead" replied the doctor
"You mean this band?" answered the nurse
Watched in dark room without lights. No stories yet. Not a bad tale.. but i prefer the manga version better.
One note - was anyone else besides me disturbed by the fact that Himiwari didn't MOVE ONE SINGLE BIT at the very end, when Yuuko's talking about how all the cast has gathered? She seems... inhuman, or at least unliving given that - at the very least, she should be breathing or doing something other than staying absolutely still...
I remembered a short story I read a long time ago, although I can't find it XD the abridged version is thus (it's still long, for a post tho):
A few months ago there was a man who soon became known as the Sunday Best Murderer, because every time he killed and molested a child, he left them propped up on a bench in their Sunday Best. He kidnapped his victims by mascarading as a ice cream vendor.
One day, he drugged a young girl with some ice cream and slipped her into his truck and drove home. In her arms she held a stuffed teddy bear. Once at his apartment, he placed the sleeping girl inside a box usually reserved for the extra ice cream he didn't sell. No one would pay any mind, as he had done this dozens of times before and even gave away the ice cream to the kids on the block.
Once in his apartment, he laid the girl on the bed and walked outside. Taking out a box of photographs, he began to collect his things, like a camera and the new clothes the girl would wear.
He paused, however, when he heard a noise from the other room. Wondering if the dosage hadn't been strong enough, the man opened the door to check. Inside the little girl was still fast asleep, but the teddy bear was now propped up against her side, staring at the open door.
The man shrugged it off, and walking into the room, picked up the bear and took it into the living room. It wouldn't do to have fibers on the bear connect him to the crime. Setting the bear on a chair, he went into the kitchen to get a drink. Again, he heard a small noise. Walking back out, he saw the bear leaning against the door, staring.
The man turned around and set his glass down, turning back again to find the bedroom door open and the bear gone.
"The hell?" the man said. He walked to the door and looked in, seeing the teddy back where it had been, leaning against the little girl, still sound asleep, staring at the door.
The man returned once more, coming back with the new clothes and the camera. "Maybe we'll save you for later," he said, picking up the bear and setting it on a chair by the window. The fur was so soft, he wondered if it was from a real animal.
Grinning, he turned back to the little girl, already getting excited. As he reached her, he heard a thump. Looking back, he saw the bear on the floor, staring. Feeling a bit off, the man left the room to get some rope and returned, and once again the bear was propped up against the little girl, staring at the door.
"The hell? Is she a sleepwalker?" the man muttered, not bothering with moving it and just tossing the bear to the bottom of the bed. He returned his attention to the little girl, rope in hand.
A soft noise was heard and he looked back, seeing the bear now propped up again, staring. The man raised an eyebrow but did nothing, and ignored the teddy until a few moments later, as he had begun to undress the girl, he felt something brush against his thigh. Looking back, he saw the bear, staring.
"The fuck." he man growled, throwing the bear back and returning to his work. The little girl gave a whimper, beginning to wake up. The man flicked on his camera, and heard a noise. He looked back over his shoulder, and....
A few hours later and the police were just finishing the clean up to a mysterious murder case. An old woman had called to report screams coming from the apartment. The whole place looked spotless, with a little girl playing with her teddy in the bedroom.
In the bathroom, they had found the bloody corpse of a naked man, with red staining the bathroom from floor to ceiling.
As the little girl played with her bear, one of the officers commented to the other as they led her down the stairs to her awaiting parents.
"It's a pity about that bear, though. It's completely ruined, with all of that blood on it's face."
Garten-san, thanks a lot for this one. For me, this is definitely the most unique of all the synopses-summaries you've posted here (basing on the time that I bumped into this site, of course). It not only contains an analysis of the episode at hand, but it also is like a bulletin for people to render their own stories --- ones that are relative and relevant to the theme of the recent episode itself. Very great! I like this kind of improvisation (if that's what to call it....). Furthermore, you mentioned a movie that's been currently released by Hollywood -- w/c I believe was striking enough to let people realize that "animes just do it better than Hollywood Movies". Hahahaha..... You're absolutely right; "The Omen's" Original Version was, and still is, far better than the new one. I've never seen both of it though, but I can tell the difference still as my brother told me that the new one doesn't have anything scary whatsoever. You also mentioned Japan's "Obon Festival". Isn't that the one that was once featured in National Geographic (I think....) where there were lanterns being drifted into the sea as a way to contact or somehow revere the dead?
Anyway, I like this episode. I know it isn't good to compare an anime w/ a certain movie or series; but since something related to Hollywood has been stated here, I'd just like to say this...... the Ghost Story-telling in this episode somewhat reminds me of a series that I loved to watch (and to scare myself with...) when I was younger -- it's "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" Hehehe..... Putting all that aside, I'd like to say that I really agree w/ your analysis regarding Himawari's true nature. As everything about her is still quite left hanging up until now, it feels clear to me though that she's not a spirit at all because if she is, then (like what you've just said earlier) Doumeki's very presence would've repelled her. But then again, maybe she is a "special" one anyway; or maybe, she's a totally different "SPECIAL" being from the rest of them. And oh by the way, since the manga is more advanced than the anime (I believe), I'd like to ask as to what and how much has already been developed in Himawari's character w/in the manga itself. Is it already revealed in the manga who she truly is?
Lastly, I’m sorry for this very "late reaction". I thought of checking out this site exactly on the very day that this summary-synopsis was released, but I was just too busy. Classes have just started, and I'm back to College/University Teaching again, so there was a lot of preparation w/c I badly needed to do last week. Now….because of the ghost stories above, I've just been reminded to share this one -- a REAL One..... "It happened once in the very first university where I taught that I had a fellow instructor who was the only one, among the faculty members around, who saw a child on a certain fateful day. That very child simply seemed like he was looking for someone somewhere or that he was just there (right outside our Communication Arts Faculty Room) for the "seeing". He never said a word to her (my colleague), and was then suddenly vanished from her sight. This happened to that instructor/professor a semester before I became employed in that said university, so I couldn't share in the "creepiness" of it at the time that I was working there w/ her already; yet the thought of it right now (for some unknown reasons) is giving me Goosebumps all over my body. Eeeehhhhhh.... Anyway, some of us (while we were there....) believed that the child was perhaps the ghost or the soul of a kid who died in the hospital that’s located w/in the university's premises as the said university is a medical one – a quarter or more of it is a hospital, and the larger parts are for the educational settings. So, as one of my elder professors there has put it, the case of that “child” wandering into our area might just be because he felt lonely (like the kid buried beneath the Hydrangeas….hahahaha…..but true, anyway) or that his soul just wanted to see the surrounding areas of the place where he died --- feeling like a “Still Alive” child, perhaps he just wanted a walk or two; and thus, he ended up bumping into that Mass Communications Lady-Professor of ours. Creepy, huh?! Well, I’ll stop this now ‘coz it’s still dawn time; and perhaps, it’s the reason why I’m a lot scared about it now.
….And also, “Gomenasai” for this long post. God bless you all…… :) :) :)
Awkward! I found this episode so exciting for hearing such creepy stories that today morning I felt what I hadn't for too long...shivers when suddenly remembering what I had watched in TV (in this case ep. 10) by the time I'm about to get a shower at 5:30 morning sourronded by the cold and darkness of the bathroom and the weak 'n'deformed light entering through the window while one's unprotected by not even clothing.
Well, the thing is, that stories reminded me Allan Poe, especially Himawari's one brought to my mind the crow, another story about a man who kept the teeth of his dead wife, also another one about a black cat living in a wall where a woman's corpse lied, and so on...
Ma... my story may be heard somewhere else, specially because I'm in Mexico and this could have happened anywhere else, since McDonalds are almost everywhere...
One day were a pair of mates coming from a party at about 2 o' clock in the night, and as they'd spent all their money, they had to walk too much to get home, so, a couple of hours after walking , and being feeling very tired for a while, when they saw a chance to get some rest in a decent place; a McDonald's, they sat down besides one of those omnipresent Ronald McDonald's, and one say to the other "oh, this is so nice man, I'm really tired..." suddenly the ronald turned his head away to them and replied..."oh, so am I!"
This is said still, as an urban legend, that this actually happen, and one of them died from a heart-infart at that moment, and the other...well, it can be believed or not, but just imagine!, who has never walk at least once in his life in the night way home and haven't seen a Ronald McDonald sat very pleasant down the moonlight...
Wow.. so many long posts and so many creepy stories.. Okay, I'm officially freaked out now. haha
o_o Mommy....
I totally had nightmares about the top hat guy in Watanuki's story (because the eyes are so scary!)...I wonder what Watanuki did in the end?
Neohkyo dear, your story's pretty good. Certainly, there a lot of McDonald's Food Chain Branches here in my country, but I never knew that there could be a freaky-scary urban legend about that "smiling guy" who always does the letter "M" sign..... Come to think of it.... after reading your story, suddenly, I just had this imagination-idea that his face now (for me)seems to look like a "killer clown" -- like the ones in horror movies. Connectively, you also mentioned Edgar Allan Poe in your post. That one sure did surprise & impress me. I never really thought before that there could be someone here who likes to read Literary Masterpieces, as I believe that everyone who comes here are too busy w/ animes to give time for other likes (hehehe).... You must be a good reader of books, huh..... as it's very rare for people in general to appreciate the masterpieces of the man who's been dubbed as "Literature's Great Father of Horror Fiction & the Short Story Genre". Good for you!!! Keep it up.
And oh... Emiko-chan dear, your story was totally creepy. That "past place" of yours must be really connected to the "Other World"; places like that are usually believed to be sort of portals to either the Demon World or the World of Preternatural Beings -- either worlds, you're still not safe.... It was wise of you & your cousin to have left w/out any mental reservation for that place. I hope your ok now. And also.... I agree w/ you; the Top Hat Man really does look scary...... he looks more like a real Horror Movie Character to me... :)
I just caught up to this episode recently and personally, i think the manga's stories was slightly better overall... though the one where the husband killed his wife here got me good. (btw... they can really tell 100 stories in one night? i'd be numb to fear by the end of 5).
My contribution (btw ya got some good stories above...). It's a bit old.
There's a man living in a suburban area surrounded by forest who's got a night-jogging hobby. One night, he came across a well which he never noticed during his previous jogs. As he got closer to the well, he noticed that there's a little girl dancing around the edge of the well giggling and singing.
"98 98 98 98... " the girl sang.
The man immediatle jogged towards her. "Little girl, please get off the well, it's very dangerous to be so close".
The girl took notice of the man and stepped off. Then she pointed at the well and giggled. "98 98 98 98 98..."
The man, unsure of what the girl's talking about got closer to the well, "What are you talking about little girl? It's very late and..." as the man looked down the well he froze in horror as the eyes of countless corpses stared back at him from the bottom of the well. Before he can react, he felt a sharp push from behind and fell straight into the well, breaking his neck upon impact at the bottom.
The girl laughed "99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99 99..."
It was 20 kilometers from the gas station when it happened, one cold foggy night, a car broke down on the side of the road, and he could not see a thing. Not the moon, not the stars, nothing, but then suddenly, he saw the head light of an on coming car, and a lady about 50 years old stopped right in front of him.
“Dear, where are you going?” she asked.
“My car broke down, I’m trying to find my way to the gas station.” He answered.
“Well, you can stay the night on my house and we’ll return to your car tomorrow when the weather’s improved, k?” she suggested.
The young man sighed, “Well, I guess it couldn’t hurt, thank you madam.”
“It’s nothing, get in the car dear.”
He got in the car, and breathed the scent of what seemed like a dead rat, he recoiled at putrid smell, but said nothing.
After awhile, they stopped at an old manor, which said, ‘McKema’ in bold letters, the woman got off her car and motioned for him to do the same.
He got off the car, glad that he couldn’t smell the putrefying stench that made him want to heave.
The woman led him into the house and showed him a finely decorated room.
“This is my daughter’s room, you’ll be staying here.”
He hesitated, but the woman said it’s the only other room in the house that was clean. So he obeyed.
When he was finally asleep, he heard the fine music coming from the room divider, which he thought was the daughter’s side of the room, and smiled, she was a great violinist. Getting tired again, he fell into another deep sleep.
Soon, enough, he heard a different kind of music, this time it was solemn, and he got concerned, ‘doesn’t she sleep?’ he thought.
He poked a hole through the room divider, but all he saw was red, still tired, he went back to sleep.
The next morning he told the woman that her daughter was a great violinist.
“No, that can’t be, she died three years ago in a car crash, 20 kilometers from here, we found the car, but we couldn’t find her, and we couldn’t open the trunk of her car, we never found out what was in there.”
She sighed, then showed him a picture of her sixteen year old daughter, the first thing he saw, were her blood-red eyes.

I didn't get it at first. XD Scared me a little.
