Vampire Knight ep.07

This episode reminds me that I am not fully aware of the limitations that the vampires in this story face. If one takes example from other vampire-stories, in 30 Days of Night, the vampires are free to roam around because for 30 days, the sun will not be seen in the artic area. The same can be said about the vampires in Interview with the Vampires, who get burned easily in the sun. While the vampires in this series also avoid sunlights, there have been times when they are seen roaming around during daytime, which is rather unusual for vampires. I also wonder if they have aversion to garlic or if there is a specific way to kill them. It's also interesting to note that unlike other vampire stories, the only vampires which can turn humans into vampires are the pure-bloods. As a result, it's impossible for the series to have some kind of story where a bunch of vampires turn several humans into their own kind.

Episode 7

Yuki comes to visit Zero who is busy training at shooting range. Yuki tells Zero that she's worried about him but Zero is back to being his sarcastic self. After a couple of rounds, he notices Yuki's neck bandage so he suggests that she removes it since it's very noticeable. Yuki, however, points out its necessity to prevent the bitemark from being known until it disappears. Zero looks upset about this and believes that Yuki won't mind if she was bitten by another vampire, like Kaname, pointing out that he's always known that Yuki likes Kaname. Yuki is upset upon hearing this and runs back to her room. As she sleeps on the coach, she dreams of standing on top of a web of blood while a little girl circles her, saying that she's afraid and the voice of a woman asks her to wake up. A flashback shows that after taking Yuuki to Chairman Cross' house, Yuuki was given a pudding but doesn't seem to know that she can eat it. When Kaname tried to spoonfed her, however, Yuuki became transfixed at his fangs and reaches out her hand, trying to touch them.

Unfortunately, this brought back the memory of her being attacked by the vampire so Yuuki screamed in horror. Because of this, Kaname decided to leave to avoid scaring her further. After Kaname left, Cross explained to the girl that he'd rename her as "Yuuki" and gave her the meaning behind the name. A few weeks later, Kaname came in a hurry, thinking that the vampire who attacked Yuuki had come to Cross' house. As it turned out, Cross simply lied so Kaname would come to the house. Kaname was about to leave when Cross points out that Yuuki put her own clothes although she's completely wrong in how to do it. Kaname for some reason finds this amusing and this was the point where Yuuki stopped being afraid of him. Fast forward one year later, Yuuki was waiting outside the house despite the fact that it's snowy that day. She looked excited when Kaname arrived, telling him that today is her birthday. It's one year anniversary of the time when Kaname saved her. Fast forward a few years later, Yuuki asked Cross if Kaname is a vampire. Cross confirmed this and asked Yuuki not to tell anyone since it's secret since not many people know their existence.

Yuuki believed that Kaname is not like other vampires and Cross agreed saying that some vampires lives peacefully with humans. At one point, Yuuki even went to the city to greet Kaname. Although she was afraid of being attacked by a vampire, Yuuki told Kaname if she's with him, she won't be scared. However, her faith was shattered when one night Cross came home with Zero and told her that his family were killed by evil vampires. One night, Yuuki found Zero trying to claw his own neck. In the present day, Zero has just finished his gun training and starts to touch the tattoo on his neck. He remembers how back then he told Yuuki that feels disgusted because he can still feel the stench of 'that woman'. Yuuki was horrified to see this and tried to stop him, assuring the guy that she'll look out for him. One day, however, Kaname came to Cross' house again. Yuuki tries to introduce the two but Zero looks horrified the minute he saw Kaname, as if he can sense the vampire in Kaname. Zero immediately grabbed a butter knife and tried to attack Kaname but the older guy easily blocked him off. Back then Zero claimed that Kaname smells exactly like 'that woman'.

Kaname grabbed the knife that Zero used to stab him and told him that he's wrong. When Yuuki tried to cheer Zero up that night, he slapped her hand because it's the hand that has touched that vampire. Nevertheless, Yuuki tried to convince him that Kaname is a kind vampire who saved her from an evil vampire. Despite this, Zero was unconvinced and believed that they're all the same. Fast forward a few weeks later, Cross informed Yuuki and Zero of his intention of setting up a night class. When he explains that the night class will be composed of vampires, Zero snapped. Kaname then appeared, explaining that the intention of the night class is to promote peace between human and vampires and to teach vampires to be moderate. Zero dislikes the idea but Cross assured him it'd be okay since Kaname will be in night class and be responsible for the other vampires. Back then Zero pointed out that if Kaname betrayed the plan, it'll be all over. Fast forward one year later, Yuuki couldn't resist the idea of coming to an old building used as temporary residence by the vampires. When she opened the door, Ichijou greeted her, saying Kaname always talks about her.

Having said that, he told her that she needs to go back. When Ichijou was not paying attention, however, Yuuki managed to sneak into the dormitory and waited for Kaname at the stairs. In the process, she saw Aidou, Cain, Ruka, and the others walking on the top floor. Although they wonder why a human child is inside the dorm, they decide to ignore her since they didn't want to create trouble before entering the school. Because Yuuki was tired, she ended up sleeping on the stairs and almost became a pray for one unknown student. Kaname, however, scold the guy, reminding him that the school has specific rule. When he put his coat on Yuuki, Kaname almost unable to resist the temptation to bite her neck. Despite this, he managed to stop himself and took Yuuki back to his room. When Yuuki woke up, she saw Kaname sucking Ruka's neck until the girl passed out. She immediately ran away, unaware that Kaname intentionally wanted her to see this. Outside the house, a disturbed Yuuki met Zero, who's been asked by Cross to look for her. Upon seeing other vampires looking at them from the dorm, Zero decided to take Yuuki away from them.

It was then that Zero told her that vampires are just beasts in the shape of humans. This includes Kaname. Yuuki, however, refused to believe this, claiming that Kaname saved her life. Because of this, she thinks Kaname is different from other vampires. In the present time, Zero finds Yuuki sleeping on the couch when he hears her asking for Kaname. When he puts a blanket on Yuuki, however, he notices her neck and upon touching it, his bloodlust starts to run out of control again. Zero manages to control his lust but Kaname then appears in front of the door, wanting to talk to him. Because Zero leaves the room earlier than Kaname, Yuuki only sees Kaname's figure, assuming that Kaname was the one who put the blanket on her. Kaname appears and tells Zero that the reason Zero is still around is because he wants Zero to be of service to Yuuki as her 'shield'. The episode ends with Yuuki saying that something in her changed that day but there's one thing that remains unchanged: the part of her that likes Kaname.

Impression

After seeing this episode, I can't help but wonder if there's more to the vampire/humans alliance that Cross had in mind. I think if one sees it from Zero's POV, the alliance seems like a dangerous idea. To begin with, vampires are hard to control. We have seen how difficult it was for them to restrain their bloodlust. On top of this, the entire alliance relies on trusting Kaname. Since Kaname is a pure-blood, it's hard not to be suspicious of his motives and the possibility that he might have a hidden agenda. Judging from the way the other vampires follow him faithfully, it won't be too difficult for Kaname to kill all of the students in the school if he wants to do so. In addition to this, the restraint that the other vampires have shown thus far is pretty conditional in that they seem to do it not because they like it but because they have a lot of respect for Kaname. Even if Kaname is sincere, what would happen if he's dead? Would the other vampires respect the treaty or would they go on killing spree? After watching last week's episode, I realized that the vampire hunters association does not seem to be that keen on the alliance either. It makes me wonder if Cross has other plan with the alliance apart from ensuring that both humans and vampires will co-exist with each other peacefully.

Moving along, I am rather disappointed to see Yuuki murmuring Kaname's name even though Zero was the one who put the blanket on her in the present time. But after last week's story, this is just a way for the writers to balance the romantic triangle. It's also nice to see the parallel of both men placing a blanket on top of her although I fail to draw any kind of meaning out of both scenes. Maybe the past and the future protector for Yuuki? At any rate, I don't think this episode moves the plot that much. It basically just re-established the facts that Yuuki has a crush on Kaname but feels kinship towards Zero. I also think this episode made Kaname a bit more likable or rather, his younger version was likable. That feeling, however, evaporated as quickly as it came the minute he started to tell Zero that the only reason he's not dead is so he can be some kind of a bodyguard for Yuuki. Anyway, at the moment the one thing that I'm really looking forward to is actually not the resolution to the triangle but the arrival of 'that woman' that Zero referred to in this episode. I think the main reason that I started to like this series was after I read that part of the story. I think the character design for one of the upcoming female characters featured in that arc is unbelievably good.

Poll: Apart from the ships (Zero/Yuuki, Kaname/Yuuki), why are you following this series? Have you watched or read other vampire-related stories?

hmm well to answer those questions, im following this series coz of the manga. i Loved the manga ever since i saw the ad for it at the back of several other volumes of manga i read. I bought one when i saw it at the store and wow i was hooked. the art was wonderful and everything. I especially love the fact that their uniform is like reverse. Day Class = Black uniform, Night Class = White uniform :] also, of course the actual uniform DESIGN is captivating. i wish i had uniform like that =[ jk.
the story was already pretty engaging to me and i love all the expressions in the manga, they're so cute! - and yes, they were more expressed in the anime xD
hmm other vampire-related stories. a lot, but atm.... Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer :D!! ohhhh~ you've got to read that, so addictive. can't wait for the movie in december (12.12.08). harry potter vs. twilight, lol.
I haven't posted on this site for a while, so i just have to say that im a Zero x Yuki fan :] all the way from chapter 1, and even more from that scene where yuki gives zero the only home made choco. that was so sweet :3

...and besides from vk, I think the last time I watched a vampire-themed show is Karin(lol..that was like 2 years ago...)

I've read other vampire series that starting to seem or better than this series. But, the only reason I'm following this series is because I like the drama and action that appears in this series. But, I feel like that the writers are having this series going a little bit too fast? Maybe?

Anyways, I agree with you that Kaname is just someone who was likeable, in his younger version, but now he's more of a 'controlling' figure. That is including in Yuki and Zero.

I definitly would love to see a fight between these two, Zero and Kaname, though I know there are possiblities that Kaname could win, hey, Matsuri has been know for twists in her story. Maybe she would come up with something that would have Zero be at the equal level as Kaname.

Other than that, I've given Kaname more time to see if he could change his ugly ways, but he seems not to show that .

People tell me to understand this character because he's a character who has been through a lot in his past, but guess what, What about Zero?

He's been through a lot as well, and still is. Being used as a 'body-guard' instead of a human being/ vampire.

Why do I watch the series? For Zero and Yuki, of course. I also think the series has gorgeous illustration. I really want to get that poster of Zero holding a gun on top of his head while Yuki lies next to him. It looks so good.

About other series, I used to watch "Buffy" and "Angel" if those are counted as vampire series. They're pretty good in that they're not taking themselves too seriously.

It's my first time to comment here, but the question really just made me think! :3 Why do I keep track of this series? Hmm... especially with Kaname's err... attitude... I usually ask myself that exact question! Especially when at times, I just really can't stand Kaname's mean attitude (towards Zero) anymore!!! Urgh!!! Ha-hah! Aside from loving Zero^^ and the Yuki X Zero (and err... watta 'bout the Kaname X Zero? :3) maybe it's because vampires are really just interesting & so cool! Yay, twilight series!!! Dec. 12~can't wait! Ha-hah! XD

*sigh* I'm really happy to know that I am not the only one who err... finds Kaname's -urggghhh!- attitude towards Zero -for the lack of a better word- irritating! Ha-hah! BTW: I love your reviews per episode for VK (& also code geass!!! XD especially the captions in the screenshots, LOL!) Honestly, I look forward to your reviews more than the anime itself! I don't know how you do it, but you just make it more interesting to look forward to! ;) Ha-hah, can't wait for next week! :3

Also, I think why I watch this series is because of Ichiru!!! so hawt, noh?!^^ (err... Kiryuuincest? Ha-hah!) and, LOL, chapter 30, can't wait! Err... sometimes, watching is SO different from just seeing... I really love THAT scene bet. Kaname & Zero, LOL! :3 Ha-hah! :->

I can't help it! I love kaname-senpai!!! I just don't know why. Normally I go for the underdogs like Kyou from Fruits Basket but this time, Zero doesn't cut it for me. Somehow, my heart melts for Kaname-senpai. Haha. No, I'm not a crazy fangirl! Kaname-senpai has that allure...that terrifying power yet his kindness toward Yuuki.... *heart*

Regarding Garten's poll, besides the ships, I'm into this manga/anime for the exquisite drawing/character design! Also, I kind of like Ijichou as well! I like that it can be deep (exploring a lot of emo issues) as well as funny...

Isnt' there any one out there who likes Kaname-senpai? I mean, he's not perfect, but neither is Zero!

I'm not following this series. I tried to read the manga, but the story annoyed me so I only continued to read for the beautiful art. In the end I dropped it. The portryal of vampires, the characters and the relationships were just irritating. After a while it also got really confusing storywise. I stopped caring about it really. (but I do really like the kaname and Yuuki pairing- no idea why :D Zero annoys me though! ) I read alot of vampire/fantasy themed books and stuff all the time, (well....actually all the books I read involved vampires, faeries, witches or something of the kind!! Fantasy is love.) so I do have alot to compare vampire knight to. I also read other vampire/fantasy themed mangas and I used to watch Angel. (Ok- am I obsessed? :P)

My dislike of Kaname has actually only developed w/ recent chapters. He was never a favorite character but I found him likable enough, now I dunno, he's just comes off as a bit too smug and arrogant for my taste, even understanding where he's coming from I just can't sympathize with him character too much. As for the poll I watch/read it mainly because I like the story. The characters aren't so bad either (Hot Guys,YAH!)as for the poll i've read/watch a couple other vampire things tho am not too big on it actually....

I am watching this series cause I am a fan of Matsuri Hino's other series, I actually haven't read this series yet. I think its cool one of her series has been animated. I have only read one or two other series about vampires, I am not too into it. But I love Hino's character design. I have to say, even though Kaname is good to look at, I am finding his character too creepy over all to like. He's a total predator, which of course, makes sense. I don't think Yuuki has many happy end options between Zero or Kaname.

As for the 'Twilight series' that some people have mentioned...............I wouldn't recommend it, it's highly overrated, and sure as hell doesn't deserve all of the hype that it gets.

Why do I watch the series?
Well because of the manga.

I find the anime to be decent enough to watch but I believe nothing can ever be better than the original manga itself.Something about Matsuri Hino's artwork is captivating and enchanting that sometimes the anime lacks it in some spots.

I'm no vampire fan-actic [though i am a Twilight fan] but enjoy this series because of the interesting plot-line.It may seem simple as first but I love how it gets into all those twists and tangles and its up to you to grasp the hints and figure it out.And also I go for the romance too of couse ^^;

...and I find it funny that the majority of VK fans hate Kaname lol xD I like him both young and present.I think his character is VERY interesting. Here you have Zero like an open-book that is easy to read and Yuki's emotions played across her face but Kaname has many sides to him known/and unknown. I adore his dark demeanor.

I believe both Zero and Kaname have their good and bad though

I didn't liked the pairing anymore xD instead crack pairings like Kain/Yori (Yuuki's friend) are way better than the obvious ones. My other fave is Ruka/Kaname lol.

I started reading the series just because it has vampires on it xD and end of discussion.

Thank you for the correction. It's been fixed now. Seiren is the short-haired one then? I always confuse the two since they're always so close to Kaname. The only vampire girl from that group that I remember well is Rima. :D

I've been following your impressions about this series so far, and I'll say something, starting by asnwering your question.

I'm following VK anime because of the manga. It's really much better than the anime version, to start with the design. Yuuki's eyes are amazing in the manga version, such as the other characters. Also, the story is amazing; every chapter brings more and more confusing but misterious stuff.

Adding to that, I'm also following this series because of a book that I've recently read, called "Twilight". These books made my interest about vampires (which was not very high) increase.

About this episode, I think it is, in fact, a very important episode because of Yuuki's past. Honestly, I kinda like Kaname/Yuuki. I prefer this Zero anime version than the manga one, but I don't know why, but I like Kaname.

Lets see, Why do I follow this series?

To be honest with you, I'm not a big fan on Vampire movies, shows, stories, etc. (heck the only vampire story i've watch is Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie, yea the old 90s movie) Like the others I read the manga first and I really love the art from the mangaka. She also did other manga that I like too. But yeah I think what I like about vampire knight is that the author takes the whole vampire thing as an advantage to put all the sexual tension in (hohohoho) which leads to the ships (of course) of the gorgeous guys etc etc. Also a added plus is that the author isnt afraid to throw in some action (an when i mean action, i mean on the level of shonen type action scenes)

so its like you get the best of everything combined (action, romance, angst, sexual but not echhi tension and GREAT manga art) all wrapped in one. Seems good to me lol story, what story..

I don't remember what made me read the manga, but I always thought vampire stories were sexy, yet it is hard to find one that I will really like. Vampire Knight is one of the few vampire stories that I have really enjoyed. It's mostly because of all the mystery and the love triangle.

But man, I was not happy with this episode.

They messed up so many things and left out so many important lines!

The two lines I think that were important, for sure, that they didn't say was

Yuki: Zero, there is no way, that I want my blood to be drunk by Kaname-Sempai, No way. Absolutely not. You are wrong Zero.

Kaname: It will heal soon. I'm a vampire remember? And... it's not me who is feeling 'pain'. (to which he is talking about Zero... I found it weird enough that he would even say that too yuuki, im surprised it was left out)

Did anyone watch the recent TV series "Moonlight"? It talked a lot about turning people and what's it's like to live for hundreds of years. They also showed how vampires punish one of their own when that "colleague" betrays them.

hiie I'm back again..
Kinda disappointed with this ep. I watched it twice trying not to fall aslp. It was making be dizzy because there is no sense of time other than the memory flashes. At least it will be the building block for the basis of the story.

Seiren is the ninja/kungfu I kinda believe she is of chinese origin and with grey hair and is very cool XDD.
Ruka is the brunette with wavy long hair and is emo half the time.
Who is Rima?

Following this Anime:
Because its one of the best manga on vampires that I have read so far. Partially following because I haven't been following manga/anime for 2.5yrs and it is killing me. This season's johnny's jdramas are all not so drool-able and my internet is so limited.
I'm a big fan of Vampires because its so hard to write about them and make it feel so realistic.

VK is a much better Vampire anime compared to the others I have seen 3-5 years ago, coupled with pretty boys and my fav. drawing technique where it is pleasing to the eyes unlike Minekura sensei or Rumiko Takahashi -sensei's drawings where either the drawings are really sharp and detailed or old school and I rather prefer Watase sensei's drawing technique. all mangaka mentioned have really captivating stories and their distinct style.
and I have no idea what I'm typing now coz my brain is blank =.=

basically, I like the drawing style, story, vampires, drama and I like Kaname coz I have a thing for those not-so-obvious love interest and most possibly will not have something with the lead in the end .

one thing abt this anime that I don't like.
They don't have next week's preview attached at the end which really kills yet makes sure you will stalk the anime LOL.

This anime will be on my buying list once its out in the market but I expect it to be out in 2 years++?

Jestagal,

I too love Kaname. He is the one Yuki is supposed to be with, IMO. And knowing what the future holds from reading ahead in the manga, I see why he's so protective of her.

I think that a lot of people misjudge Kaname-sama because they are considering him as a human instead of a vampire. It's like Yuki tells him at one point that they are not like humans. They are more instinctual, like an animal. So when I see Kaname act that way he does, I know that the author is just portraying that vampire personality in the way it should be portrayed. Vampires are definitely not human and won't act like them.

When I watch this the way Yuki acts toward Zero reminds me of the way I act toward my little brother. I think her love will always be for Kaname, because it's just destined to be that way. And...

When I say brother with Zero, I mean human brother relationship. It is obvious that the sibling relationship with vampires is more closely related to the way royalty has always considerd it. They are expected to get married and it's totally ok. Also, Kaname isn't 'really' her brother. I think their relationship is beautiful and the artwork for those scenes reflects it so well!

Sorry, but I just watched this again and had to make another comment and ask a question.

@Ongaku-you're right! They did leave out some important stuff. I remember reading in the manga Kaname commenting on Zero being the one who's in pain. At least that shows he cares about Zero. He does realize Zero is in a lot of pain. But watching this episode and the one before and after....Kaname is in a lot of pain too. He has to watch Yuuki allow Zero to drink for her and you have to remember that for Kaname that is like:

watching another man keep sleeping with his fiance. It has to be eating him up inside to allow them to do this without doing anything about it. I mean Kaname had to watch what was supposed to be a happy future just ripped away from him. He has to watch his life be different from the way it was supposed to be every day, instead of growing up and growing closer to the girl he is betrothed to.
I don't think he is trying to be cruel to Zero either. I think he's trying to let him know, ok I'll trust you with Yuuki for now, but if you ever hurt her you will answer to me. If there is no threat, maybe he feels Zero won't try so hard to control his bloodlust and will take it too far with Yuuki.

And Garten, in your summary above you say that Kaname wanted Yuuki to see him drinking from Ruka. It's so obvious but I never realized that til now! I always thought...wow why would he do that w/Yuuki right there? Do you think it was to scare her from coming into the dorm to see him whenever she likes because that other vampire tried to get to her before Kaname stopped him on the stairs?

And I know this is getting long...sorry I'm a lit major and love to write hehe.....but to answer the poll, I have always loved vampires. When I was really little my mom read me a vamp book and I became fascinated by them....yes I know I'm weird. When I was a kid I even remember trying to find a way to become one...which is kind of embarrassing now but I don't know there is just something about them. So...I have read tons of stuff. When I found this series, I had just split up w/a cheating husband and moved into an apt on my own in a country where I have no family. I would wake up in the middle of the night not being able to sleep and read it. So it is really special to me. It got me through a hard time and provided a bit of distraction. LOL Garten and just like you I can't stop listening to that opening song. I even made it a ringtone on my BB.

If you want a good spoil read the manga. You will not believe why kaname was there 10 years ago and how he knows yukki. It's pretty obvious that he knows already. When i was reading it i was speechless I was jumping up and down screaming OMG. At first I thought it might be true in the middle chapters, but didnt want to believe it and completely dropped the subject. I'm a big fan of Kaname/yukki but now that i watch the anime it does make kaname extremely creepy. It makes you want to root for zero/yukki. The manga makes him seem so gentle and kind towards yukki. I like the younger kaname better its cute. But the anime makes him seem like some total freak. But its all out of love that why i love him and his personalty so much. but i still a kaname fan.>_<

Oh, I used to hate vampire series. Seriously.

But my interest towards them started when I watched a vampire movie with my friend.. What was it called again? Underworld revolution, or something like that. It was so cool, and I found myself liking the whole mysterious and rather aristocratic style of the vampires. (That's how vampires are usually portrayed, right? And they like to wear goth-inspired clothes..)
After that, my friends forced me to read the Twilight series, and I loved it.

Then I started watching Vampire Knight anime and reading the manga. Actually, it had been my intention to read the series for like, a year or something, but I just recently did so. And.. that's how I got hooked. (I also read some other ..er, supernatural mangas too, so..)

I'm very addicted to the series, but to be honest, I don't like too much how the recent events of the manga have turned out. They were just... agh. I just hope things will be explained better and so on.

,Hi'! ^^, um, reason? The artwork mostly I think.

I started reading the manga, and I was hooked, I've been a loyal ever since it started. I think the artwork in the manga is just BEAUTIFUL! I love everything from the character design to the clothing and the backgrounds/surroundings, it's wonderful, adventerous! LOVE IT! XD

And and and! I love the plot, the twists, and the characters, but there's one thing though, I'd wish that there'd be more focus on the world of vampires too, I find that extremely interesting, ^^

I'm kind of disapointed with the artwork in the anime. I just don't think that they catched the beauty of the artwork in the original manga. I know it's not easy to make anime look as gorgeus as the original, but seriously! I can't stand it! -.-', I don't think any of the characters have been given a creditable adaption, and because of that i haven't been ableto watch the anime T.T
