I'm always amused with this particular part of the series no matter how many times I've read/seen it. I just think it's very dramatic and a bit harlequin-romance-esque. Especially with Yuuki saying "Together, let us commit the most unforgivable act". The first time I read it I though they were going to have sex but much to my disappointment, it's just more blood sucking. On a hindsight, this could just be an allegory that the author used to represent sex without the magazine censoring every single bits of the story. After all, the basic idea of the scene in question is that of a pre-marital girl willingly giving herself to a guy. Interestingly enough, for some reason vampires are often seen as sexual deviants, possibly because the act of sucking someone else's neck was considered taboo back then and still is for some people. What's amusing is how this element of taboo actually sexualizes the concept of vampirism more than it scares people away.

A flashback shows that as a kid, Zero felt guilty because his teacher, Yagari, lost one eye in an attempt to save him from a vampire. Back then Yagari also told Zero that vampires are sorrowful creatures who can't defy their natural instinct thus it's their job as vampire hunters to hunt them down. In the present time, Yagari points out that although his bullet only grazed Zero, it should be quite painful because it's filled with magic. Before Yagari can shoot Zero again, however, Yuuki moves to protect Zero with her own body. She tells the guy that while she's not aware of his relationship with Zero, she won't let him kill Zero. The tense situation is disperse when Cross arrives on the scene. Despite this, Yuki refuses to back down and continues to interrogate Yagari, demanding to know his identity. In retaliation Yagari tells Yuki his name, profession, and reminds her that he did this to protect her so she should stop blaming him.

That night Yuuki finds herself unable to sleep because she keeps worrying about Zero. Her worries intensifies the next day when Zero doesn't come to school so she demands Yagari to tell her Zero's whereabouts. Yagari informs her that Zero is being confined so that he won't hurt anyone else. He then goes off to teach the night class, surprising all of the vampires in the class. Despite this, he assures them that he's a qualified teacher. Kaname can't help himself from taking a potshot at the vampire hunter by asking the guy if he's still gathering info on night class or if he has a target in the class. After the class, Yagari is surprised to find Yuuki still waiting outside for him. She explains that since he said Zero is fine, she figures he's the one who's at risk of being torn to shred by the night class. Yagari tells Yuuki that she's a good kid but there's nothing she can do to save Zero. Having said that, he is now in the guest room of Cross' private quarters.

When Yuuki arrives at the room, Zero at first tries to get her to leave but when he fails to do this, he ends up explaining to her that Yagari was his and his brother's teacher and guardian since their parents are rarely home. At one point, Yagari lost his eyes because he tried to protect Zero and his brothers from an E-level vampire who was a school nurse. In the present time, Zero eventually agrees to open the door for Yuuki so she takes him into the bathroom and opens her jacket. She then asks him to continue what they were doing yesterday. Yuuki tells Zero that she finally thought of something that she can do. She moves forward and leans her head to his chest, asking him to drink her blood to stop his thirst. Zero tries to resist, claiming that he can't forgive himself if he does that but Yuuki assures him that she has given it a lot of thought. As Yuuki encourages Zero to commit the most unforgivable act, Zero sinks his fangs onto her neck.

As Zero continues to feed on her, Yuuki wonders if the idea of vampire feeding on her is scary. After a while, however, she realizes that she's not afraid of Zero. Zero himself seems to be able to control himself better this time around and manages to stop himself after he gets enough of Yuuki's blood. He, however, tells Yuuki that he is disgusted with himself because even though he hate vampires and doesn't want to hurt other people, he still can't resist the taste of blood. In response, Yuuki reminds him that he promised to stop saying that sort of things. Even if he hates it and hates her, they still have to stop the monster within him. Because of this, he shouldn't just give up. Eventually, Zero snaps out of his self-pity and asks Yuuki if she's okay. Yuuki assures him that she's not lacking blood since she's always healthy. She's sure that she can go to school tomorrow. Later on that night, however, Yuuki meets Kaname on her way back to the dorm.

Yuuki starts to panic, realising that giving blood to a vampire is a sin that must not be known by anyone else. Kaname wants to know why Yuuki is wondering out when all of the night students are already back in the dorm and wonders if he should report this to headmaster Cross. Kaname then takes the end of Yuuki's hair and tells her that it's wet, wondering if she washed it. A terrified Yuuki hopes that Kaname doesn't notice Zero's bitemark on her neck. Upon seeing Yuuki's hesitation, Kaname envelopes her in a hug, wondering since when she doesn't talk to him anymore. Much to her relief, Kaname then walks away from her. Although Yuuki does not regreat what she did with Zero, she wonders why her heart is in so much pain. Meanwhile, Kaname is stopped by Yagari, who wonders why a vampire behaves nicely towards a girl. He tells Kaname that he should know what Yuuki has just done since the evidence is still there.

Despite his initial silence, Kaname eventually tells Yagari that the reason is so that he won't lose Yuuki. The next day, Yuuki wonders why Zero doesn't come to class until she realizes that something must have happened to him. She comes running back into his room in time to see Yagari pointing his gun at Zero. When he hears Yuuki's voice, Zero stops Yagari's gun. Yagari doesn't make a second attempt but he tells Zero that seeing him like this makes him want to kill Zero because it'll make him feel better. He then asks Yuuki that if Zero breaks down, she must stop him. Yagari also reveals that he didn't have any intention to kill Zero otherwise, he wouldn't have missed such a close shot back in the lake. Before Yagari left, however, Yagari tells him it seems "that woman" is still alive. After Yagari left, Zero realizes that Yuuki looks like she's about to cry. Despite his initial fear of touching her, he eventually pats her on the head, assuring the girl that he won't run away.

Impression

Zero/Yuuki is set to become one of the few non-hentai anime pairings who are quite sexual with each other. Despite not being a couple yet, they already touch each other intimately and looking like they just had a moment together. Their consensual blood sucking scene was pretty good and erotic with just a hint of perverseness appropriate for the situation. It's also nice to see Yuuki becomes a stronger person everytime she's with Zero. Her relationship with the guy is not one way street where he always protects her. She also does a good job of protecting Zero in her own way. A good example of this was when she shielded Zero with her own body when Yagari tries to shoot his own student. While it may seems foolish, it's actually a good character development for Yuuki. At any rate, I'm pretty sure now that Zero/Yuuki are the ones that referred to in the OP lyric when the song goes "the secret that no one knows", because IIRC, I don't think she and Kaname are sharing any kind of secret at any point in the storyline.

As for Yagari, I know that he comes across as a jerk in the story but I can actually understand him quite well. Imagine finding out that someone that you know well has now turned into this 'monster' who needs fresh blood in order to survive on a day to day basis. From his perspective, that person that he cares about has died and in his place is just a shell that looks similar to the person. This is why he wanted to kill Zero because he believes Zero would also be happier if he had died. In a way that's probably true. From here on, I think Zero would be even more depressed that he has to live on as a vampire, the very thing that he hates ever since he was a kid. While it's nice of Yuuki to try to encourage him to live on, I think she's not aware of how much this decision tortures Zero's conscience. I think the only reason he stays alive is because of Yuuki and her request, which suggests that he does like her. Anyway, it's interesting to hear Yagari talking about "that woman". It makes me wonder if we're going to skip the side story involving Ichijou and just jump straight to that major arc. Also, is it just me or is that nurse looks more like a man than a woman in this anime?

In answer to your question- a lot of the vampire books/films i've read/seen have been on the sexy side >

the other way of looking at it is that yuuki sees zero as a brother *family* and whats to protect him to the best of her abilities....

maybe the love between them isnt sexual but more of a family bond..

this makes the act of drinking her blood or (having sex) even more unforgivable the greatest of taboos right?

but in this context i dont think they are talking about sex as such...yes the scene is very sexualised but still i think "its about drinking her blood"

Maybe for vampires though this is the same as sex but for humans this is the same as well drinking blood :P a matter of perspective maybe?

I agree that'd be taboo. And in a way, a certain taboo was kind of implied in that scene since Yuuki and Zero did grow up together. Otherwise, what is so taboo about giving a vampire some of her blood? Maybe if Yuuki had lived in the 18th century then yeah but I assume the story takes place in modern day. And I don't see her being that religious of a person either. So it's not really about feeling sinful that she lets a creature of the night devouring her.

Maybe for vampires though this is the same as sex but for humans this is the same as well drinking blood :P a matter of perspective maybe?

It's likely perspective. In some vampire stories, the victims are often described as being seduced by the vampire, etc, suggesting that they get a little bit of a kick out of getting bitten by a vampire.

... That's a woman? No way.

Well, Zero referred to her as "Kanojo" (she). :D

Personally, I don't know why vampires are associated with sexiness because I find the long teeth to be a complete turn off. They look kinda silly, IMO.

I have to agree with the crappy animation, but I really like Yuuki's character here more and more. She's not just those damsel in distress heroine that's soo overplayed in shoujo. She actually does her own share of giving. When she offered her blood to Zero, I thought it would be nice if Zero could've acted more grateful. Like give her a hug or something, but that's probably just his character. lol

I would have to say that I'm just glad they kept that part the same as the manga. I was afraid they would make it less sexual or something, though all the other sexual scenes they were leaving in gave me good hope.

I do think Vampire and sex go hand in hand. I don't think I have ever really read a vampire story that didn't do the whole sexy thing, heh.

Hum... I don't know, unless they don't follow the manga I would think the secret that no one knows is actually something about Yuuki that she doesn't even know about. Either that or it is about Kaname, haha. There are a lot of secrets in this series though... makes it hard! lol

ani_d, I agree. Sometimes I wish Zero could be a lot more....uh, nicer. He's a bit of stand-off-ish. That's the only thing that I don't like about him. He's such a typical rebel character in so many anime.

In my gothic literature course (we have weird courses:P) we would often refer to vampires in literature as a sexual predator. Since they always carry this sort of allure that attracts their victims into the taboo subject of sex represented by one big supernatural metaphor such as the bite representing a kiss and well the exchanging of bodily fluids.

May 14, 2008 | Ophelia wrote:

@ Shannon

You're referring to Yuki and Zero right? They are high school students so they should be around 16 or 17 years old. As for the other vampires, who knows, they could be hundreds years old.

I love this episode wonky animation and all. I know it would have been better with good animation but still, that scene in the bathroom was hottt. And yes, vampires are always kind of sexual because they first violates a stranger's personal space (considered important even now), and sucking is such a possessive thing, like they're claiming their victim as theirs.

May 14, 2008 | Aesshen wrote:

Vampires are one big huge sexual metaphor. That's why Yuuki's freaking out and Kaname is pissed off. I thought the secret that no one knows was about

Yuuki being a vampire
. Because no one does know that except Kaname and Rido. Or it could just be a retarded song lyric in a stupid, very fun opening song. Either way.

Anyway, I'd like to keep waving my Kaname/Yuuki flag over here. For some reason I see Zero and Yuuki as being more like siblings, which is ironic, really.

And of course vampires are sexual. Well, when they don't show their ugly face like that Level E one.

May 14, 2008 | Lilly wrote:

I would say yes. I read somewhere that when a vampire suck the blood of the victim, the victim will be somewhat sexually aroused that the victim will be powerless to do anything and just give in.

When a person (or a vampire) offers his/her blood to another, it means they have romantic feelings and wants to share it. As for Yuuki's case, it is unlikely romantic (from Yuuki's point of view, perhaps?)

The problem (not really a problem, just a 'characteristic' ) with this series is that all the guys look way too pretty!! (not that I'm complaining :D ) So, in contrast, the nurse looks more like a pretty guy than a girl. :P I think you can probably blame it on the animation budget though. If they had more time, they would add 1) bigger eyes, 2) pouffier hair, 3) more "womanly" figure, and 4) less angular looking fingers.

After Yuuki did the "thing" with Zero in the bathroom , she saw Kaname, and was like, "oh no!! Don't notice [the bite marks]!!!" I was thinking.... uhh, how can he NOT notice!?!?!?!?! The bandaid does NOT blend into your flesh, no matter what the ads Johnson & Johnson tells you. XD

I just read Dracula for a class and I have to say that it's an incredibly sexual novel. No, seriously, go ahead and read an excerpt here:

http://www.literature.org/authors/stoker-bram/dracula/chapter-21.html

The description of Dracula making the young bride drink his blood is perilously close to oral sex... yeah, anyway, there are polygamous and homosexual overtones through the whole damn book. Dunno if the manga artist ever read Dracula, but never has bloodsucking been unsexual, at least not post-Dracula.

Vampirism = sexuality? Absolutely. If I recall, that's one of the controversies when Dracula was first published. People saw it as a blatantly erotic, sexual novel and more controversial - it showed women who were empowered via sexuality (there are a number of female vampires in the original). This was not the perception of women during the Victorian era.

The acts of sucking blood in itself is described sexually, with lips pressed to necks or other body parts. Usually the victims (often women) are portrayed as writhing, almost in pleasure, during the process. So hell yeah, vampirism is almost always seen as erotic.

May 16, 2008 | Kerokeropi wrote:

Vampirism has always been depicted as sexual since a long time ago. It's part of the fantasy since back then sexuality is not as free as it is now. Being bitten by a vampire is likened to committing a sin because often the victim is the girlfriend/boyfriend of another person.

I wrote an entry about this on my LJ. How the whole blood sucking relates to illicit sex, and it gives you a feeling that you just did something, something looked down upon by society (a.k.a. premarital/teenage sex), but it's really squeaky clean in the means of whether you had sexy or not; it just happens to have that feelilng.

The whole deal on blood sucking just screams of sexual overtones, you're not alone on that.
Besides, with the number of times Zero blushed within that ten minute segment with he and Yuuki you'd think that there WAS something going on.

Haha at the comment about the girl looking like a guy. You know what that means Garten? That anime viewers would think that looks more like a pretty guy than a girl (especially the way she's dressed), but anyone else who saw her would clearly see her as a girl. Being a viewer of these kinds of shows makes you get used to a differeent perspective of things.

I'll tell you something. I'm a Zero/Yuuki fan, but it seems to me that Yuki does not see Zero "in that way". I've often found myself thinking she would it enjoy it more if it was Kaname sucking on her neck. She always seems so scared when Zero is doing it. Perhaps I'm being too harsh on her since that experience must be very uncomofortable.

Then I find out the manga is online! Yea I know...I'm behind the times, but I'm a sit down w/a book and read girl. I stayed up way past my bed time reading and finished up to the end of 39. OMG pages 16-17 of Ch. 35! I was like...YES! So cool! Then I get up this morning and 40 is there. This has been a great week.

Go Kaname-sama! ^_^

I was just watching this episode again, and I have to say that they animators do an excellent job of making Kaname look as heartbroken (during the scene where Zero is feeding on Yuki and after when he meets her) as he must feel. When I see that one where he picks up the chess knight and says 'Yuuki is kind" omg the look in his eyes makes me feel horrible for him. Kaname loves her so much, and he has to suffer so much. At the beginning of the next episode you can tell he's suffering too. I guess I can relate to him. My family is 2700 miles away and right now the person I'm in love with doesn't know I exist...lol. Poor poor Kaname.
