Yes, I actually am still alive. I just don't have the motivation to write anything due to various personal reasons. It also doesn't help that I'm way behind on everything. Because of this, I decided to make this list in the hope that I can justify my action should I decide to stop reviewing some of the titles that are on my list at the moment. Having said that, it's kind of hard to do this since the only series I'm following religiously at the moment is Honey and Clover. As unfortunate as it is, I can't afford to watch anything else with my current schedule at the moment. Anyway, if you guys don't mind, I'm interested to know your current watching list at the moment and why you choose to follow the shows you're watching now.
Going Up
Honey and Clover
This is definitely the best show of the season for me. The show somehow always manages to make me feel happy, sad, and back to happy (or vice versa) in such quick successions. The only other show that managed to do the same thing to me was Fruits Basket and that now sits comfortably on my top 5 anime list. The characters are so easy to empathise, and I find that their life/romantic problem to be quite close to my own from time to time. It makes the series a bit harder to watch at times but it also makes the series far more important to me.
Still enjoyable
Monster
I really miss this series but since my internet connection is so unreliable, I have to make a choice as to which series I want to download more. And unfortunately, that series ended up being Honey and Clover. Nevertheless, once I return home, I intend to follow the series as usual. I also have a couple of episodes on my laptop which I don't think I've reviewed just yet. I guess it's a little bit stale by now but better be late than never.
Yakitate!! Japan
Admittedly, I haven't keep up with the last 5 or so episodes but I've always liked the characters and I don't think that will change even after not watching the series for the past month. I am also keen to know if the series will indeed end after the Monaco arc or if it'll continue down to the current Pantasia vs St.Pierre arc. Having said that, I think the series need to move some of its plot forward to prevent the story from repeating over and over again. I'm keen to know if there is a romantic development between Tsukino and one of the male characters, for example.
Speed Grapher
Hmm, this would have gone to the 'going down' list if it wasn't for the chemistry between Saiga and Kagura. The series still shows promising possibilities from time to time but it hasn't deliver anything exciting thus far. To be honest, I'm not really sure what I want to see from this series but the 'freak of the week' thing has to stop. I think an investigation into Kagura's power will be far more interesting story to tell here.
Going down
Gakuen Alice
I forced myself to watch the first half of episode 23 and ended up turning the episode off halfway through it. I hate it when an anime ends up making its own ending and not doing a good job at it. Not only the character design is shoddy, the storyline takes forever to get off the ground. It doesn't help that downloading the rest of the episodes are like pulling a teeth. Because of this, so far I haven't got the motivation to finish the series. Maybe one day I'll finish it off but at the moment, I don't have the energy to do so. I feel a bit sad about this because despite the occasional bad animation, the series generally has been a blast. It's a shame the animators have to ruin it by creating uninteresting original story to end the series.
Tsubasa Chronicle
I think I'm done with this series. Well, I wasn't that fond of the manga nor the characters to begin with. It doesn't help that the animation and the character designs are both dull and ugly. While I agree that BeeTrain is partly to blame for the boredom that is the anime, I think the main problem with Tsubasa is its storyline, which is very weak to begin with. BeeTrain does try to make the anime more interesting through the use of Yuki Kajiura's music, which is probably the best thing about the series. However, awesome chorus can't help much when the basic storyline and character design are lousy.
That pretty much sums up my thoughts on the shows you mentioned.
If I understand (my english is very poor), you want stop some series, and you ask if we want continue to find our favorits ?
I'm looking for the new chapters of EVA, because the manga is too long to come to France. I like the TV show (specialy the episodes 25 and 26), but I'm very curious of the manga's development...
I hope find the Stage 66's previews later in your site (with or without comment, as you can, but reading the scans help me to wait for the french release - I always buy the books when they are available)...
Thank you for the last chapters and your attention !
i've been trying to follow tsubasa just for the artwork in the manga, but after episode three.. i just had to stop. they already had a recap episode by ep. three? no thanks.
i did start downloading honey and clover based on your reccomendation and i have to say thanks! very few anime can make me laugh so loud and long over the antics morita & co. go through. emma and honey are basically the only two anime im watching out for right now.
Currently, I guess the only animes that i am following are these....
Hot
Honey and Clover
Although I haven't read the manga, this anime did catch my attention when I checked the upcoming animes listed in moon phase. I kept close attention to that series and decided to watch it. What a suprise. While each ep is directed by a different person, it executes beauitifully. The last couple of eps have been going a bit slow plot wise...but it still brings out the best of each character, especially Shinobu Morita :P The insert songs on the first four eps fits the mood perfectly, especially ep 1 and ep 3. In my opinion, the most impacting ep for me was ep 2. when Mayama and Takemoto were both discussing how great Hagu is. At the same time, Takemoto was worried about what's in store for him in the future. In many ways, this situation relates to me, currently. Without a doubt, the best series of this season.
Yakitate! Japan
The great thing about this series is that it wastes no time with filler eps. There has been only one filler ep and that ep was basically a transition ep to the next saga. It follows the manga literally, from panel to panel. The anime also brings out Azuma's enthusiasm for bread nicely. It also brings out the feud between Kawachi and Suwabara in the Monaco cup saga. I'm happy to say that Sunrise has done a good job of keeping the quality of the anime constant. After all, they have done it in the past with other long animes like Inuyasha amd numerous amount of Gundam eps.
Normal
Mahoraba ~Heartful Days~
With 3 eps left to go, I find it hard to believe that they could find the reason for Kozue's disease. I am a huge fan of J.C Staff ( the same company who is working on Honey and Clover animation ). However, the main problem with this show is that it brings out the character's personality in only one ep. For example, one ep they will focus only on a certain supporting character and show what kind of person they are. Hasn't this already been done before constantly? The brilliant thing about Honey and Clover is that it doesn't do that. It portrays everyone equally in each ep (except shuu-chan because of you know..*not going to spoil it for those who hasn't watch it past ep 6*). I'm not saying Mahoraba is a bad anime. But, I am saying that there has been way too many filler eps and not moving the plot along. To sum it up currently, 5 eps of plot movement + 16 eps of fillers + 2 eps of plot movement.
Cold
Tsubasa ~Reservoir Chronicles~
This is the most disappointing anime i have come across this season . Not only was this anime overhyped, but it was executed poorly. It started off great in ep 1 and 2....then it just went down the drain. I was very upset with the crappy fillers eps they put in this series. I respect Bee Train. They have done some good series that I liked (Madlax & Noir). However, this is not their best work. Not even Kajiura Yuki's music could save the series (although i will purchase the ost itself :). I just hope the movie version of Tsubasa won't turn out like this. I'm not even going to start with Sakura's voice because i'll just ramble on and on. With that being said, I am excited about XXXholic movie because Production I.G is working on it. I recommend people to avoid this anime at all cost and purchase the manga.
hi, this is my first time posting ^.^ although isn't my first time in this site.
well i was downloading monster but i had to stop by lack of space, and now no more seeds Y_Y ( i have until ep 09)
Currently im downloading a lot of anime O_o:
HONEY & CLOVER- my favorite right now ^o^, the artwork, music, storyline is fantastic and simple at the same time
EMMA - i like this show so much, i started with the manga and even when the story is kind of cliche i like the way is moving
SPEED GRAPHER- im in the ep 8 and yeah, now im waiting to see what is going to happen with kagura's power and is good 'cos i was starting to think that the show looked like sailor moon, defeating monsters each episode, but of course whitout the shoujo ... lol
TRINITY BLOOD-Gonzo's production, vampires, vatican, etc etc. I guess this anime will be like Hellsing, really enjoyable, but if you read the manga you realize that the anime is so bad XP (i still love hellsing anime and hope TB anime too kekekekeke).
TSUBASA-oh my my, what can i say, im in chp 10 and im done (well im done since chp3 but i download the anime for a friend and i can help but watching lol) the artwork is weird, there is no much dialogue, WTH with the recaps, i just like the music, i guess a CD drama it had been enough to this manga :P
GAKUEN ALICE- im in the ep 8 and i still like it, but i guess is gonna be like furuba anime, or ultra maniac (and many others), where the story is changed to finish the seasion and in the end its like a manga promotion and thats it
well thats all thank you :P
take everyone
pd. sorry for my bad english XD
It looks like you're not the only one with too little time. The release frequency is pretty low at the moment for many series. I assume that's normal during this time of the year. There wasn't a subbed release of Monster for over a month.
I can only agree about Speed Grapher. The animation quality gets really low at times and this 'freak of the week' formula annoys me as well. That said it's not bad but it's merely a time killer now.
I actually started watching Eureka Seven because of your blog entry. I didn't like the opening song a lot first but it grow on me after a few days and now I agree it's a wonderful song. The series itself appears a little like NGE for kids, so it's mostly comedy but it's well executed and has beautiful animation. It's definitely a keeper for now.
I've only watched two episodes of Emma until now but it looks very promising. I'd even say that it worked better if they had skipped some of the anime stereotypes (the eyes could be smaller). I believe that this series could easily have international success and be appreciated by people that do not like Japanese (style-wise) animation. It reminds me of those animated series I watched as a child which played in Europe of the 19th century with improved animation.
Well, I gave up Tsubasa after the first episode mostly because of the preview for the 2nd episode and because I had quite a lot bad critique back then already.
Trinity Blood seems to be a pretentious mix of all kinds of anime styles so I gave up on that after the 2nd episode.
One of the few newer current series I really like is Futakoi Alternative. Especially the slower episodes (most so far) are really beautiful and the animation quality is top-notch as well.
Well, I have 56k connection so right now I only dowload Monster. ^_^;
I'm glad you finally have not dropped the series. If you are on episode 48, last episode subbed was 53 and it seems the series definitely will finish in September with 74 episodes, so you are not so behind at all. :)
regards
I think I dropped Tsubasa after their 2nd episode. The last episode I think I saw of Speed Grapher was episode 6. I'll wait until the season's over to watch it all at one time. It's not on my top priority to watch.
My weekly anime fix has gone to Honey and Clover and BLEACH. BLEACH mostly because I'm a fan of the manga. The Soul Society arc finally finished last week. That took about a year. x_x
I didn't think I would be able to relate so much to Honey and Clover, but as the story evolved, it really started to get to me. I find it really facinating how the story is able to include so much comedy but also be able to balance in serious drama. I'm very glad to know that this anime will be 26 episodes.
I hope you don't stress out so much in Japan and have some fun. :)
Yea, I agree with you too, that honey and clover is really good. I'm in love with that anime.
Eek! My post's gone! But I double checked that it appeared after rixot's post... ?_?
Welcome back Garten-san~! XD
Everyone seems to be busy this month. Must be some kinda June disease lol ^^!
Hachimitsu to Clover is the anime I lookward to most =D For me, it's the best that's out right now ^^ And I think it's reasonable that you stopped for Tsubasa. I didn't even last through the second episode lol
Hopes your schedule clears up soon~
Honey and Clover, and Bleach. I have to admit for both I disliked the first volumes of the manga. I even thought the first episode for Honey was boring, but I' m really glad I didn't stop watching. I even dl the pic you have from their website. I was also watching Basilisk, but that looks like thats done for since Funimation has it now. Anyone know any blog site with detailed reviews for the show.? Oh well, as usual you do great reviews on your blog and good luck :) finding time to watch what you like.
Honey & Clover is at the top of my list right now. Closely followed by Trinity Blood (love the animation but episodes 5 & 6 were sort of boring), and Emma.
Emma is such a slow moving anime but somehow I find it really enjoyable. It's a pity it will probably not see an english release.
I'm also watching Speed Grapher right now, but the whole spoilers in the opening keeps getting me, and sometimes the animation is not up to par.
I've missed so many episodes of Tsubasa Res. that I nearly gave up the ghost and I am finding it harder and harder to justify using bandwidth to grab it anymore. It's got to the point where it doesn't hold my attention and I'll happily do other things while it is playing.
Well, here it is again if I can recall what I typed...
In no order of preference:
1. Gokujo Seitokai
Very fun anime to watch. Lovable cast. Hilarious antics and jokes. Catchy OP and ED. This is the only anime that I'm getting the raws of on a weekly basis though I don't understand much japanese...
2. Bleach
I love the manga and I like the characters, especially Rukia, Tatsuki and Ichigo.
3. Gakuen Alice
I only have till ep 8, but the characters are endearing. Poor Mikan's always good for a few laughs =P
4. Yakitate! Japan
Food!
My current watching list is as follows (in no particular order):
1) Futakoi Alternative
What can I say ?! Excellent drama. Excellent comedy. Likable characters. I like the calm atmosphere and the way Rentarou narrates the stories in some episodes. There are a lot of shows out there that need an "alternative" treatment just like Futakoi. I hope UFO table keep the good work. So far they managed not to disappoint. I also like the ending song (this is one instance where I approve the use of clay animation ^_^)
2) Honey and Clover
One of the best dramas that I have ever seen in my life. Excellent animation (as expected from J C Staff). The comedy rocks. I love the character designs and the use of water colours. The ending song is one of my favourites. My only complaint about this show is the opening (I hope they change it halfway through the series)
3) Emma
A very touching romantic story set in the Victorian era. I like the slow pace and the characters are very likable. The opening and ending are great. One of the reasons why I started watching this show is because I am a fan of the "World Masterpiece Theatre" shows (WMT). All these shows were based on western literature. I realise that Emma is based on a Japanese manga but it has the same feeling as these shows. In particular, Emma reminded me of Little Princess Sara (one of my favourite WMT shows). Both stories take place in London and there is even an Indian connection in both shows.
4) Mahoraba
One of the best anime comedies ever made. Somehow this show always manages to cheer me up. I think the subtitle of the show (heartful days) is a very fitting description of the show. I like the opening alot and all the characters are definetly unique and interesting (to say the least ^_^). I can't say that I'm fond of the character designs but these are overshadowed by the unique personalities of each character.
5) Monster
I am a bit behind in following this show but that will not change how much I like it. This is a masterpiece to say the least. The opening is a piece of genius. The ending is a piece of genius. Every thing about this show rocks. This is the kind of show that makes an anime fan like me proud.
6) Basilisk
I never thought I might like this show but after watching the second episode I got hooked. I like the opening and ending a lot. The drama and suspence in this show are great and each episode ends with a cliffhanger. The story is very tragic which is something I like. The art is great and very detailed.
7) Gokujou Seitokai
I'm following this out of curiosity to see where it leads. There are some very good comedy moments but so far the story seems to be moving nowhere. I'm not fond of the character designs and the art quality seems to fluctuate. I really like the ending song.
Hey Garten, glad to see you alive and well (considering). I hope whatever's going on gets resolved.
(Please note: Some of the series listed below may be licensed. Do NOT ask me or others where to download them!)
Addictions (as in, "they broadcast it yesterday... must... watch... anime... withdrawal..."-- these are in no particular order):
1. Mahoraba - Although the plot moves like a pinball in a machine played by a really good player, you often see something new about a character with each new episode. Add the fact that it has yet to fail to make me laugh or otherwise connect emotionally with the characters, and you have my main anime fix (last week was difficult, considering they postponed broadcast in favor of baseball... argh!)
2. Sousei no Aquarion - I like big robots (I was a kid in the 80s. Sue me.). Although the villain stuff isn't very interesting at all, the rest of the anime somehow holds my attention despite having a lot of the elements of an annoying "gattai (combining) robot" show (Maybe it's the Yoko Kanno BGM/OP/ED...). That, and Apollo + Sylvia = funny.
3. Honey and Clover - I think everyone else summed up why this anime's so great, so I'll leave it at that. "NO MORE RYUUNEN!!"
4. Emma - Others have mentioned this one as well. The ED, "Menuet for Emma," makes me want to pull out my recorder and start playing along...
Well, okay, I'd need to practice some...
For a few weeks...
5. A!M-S TV - I've enjoyed the first few volumes of manga, and I'm liking what I see here.
Time-killers (as in, it's tolerable enough to spend twenty minutes on):
1. Bleach - After dragging its feet for a bit, the action is finally picking up. What prevented me from writing it off is the fact that the fights haven't lasted more than 2 episodes (though it looks like they're about to break this).
2. Erementar Gerad - Nevermind the weird Engrish title; as long as they don't drop the ball on the backstory, it'll be a similar experience as Grenadier was (well, the main character isn't uber-strong this time, so...).
3. Ichigo 100% - This season's obligatory "harem" anime (well, at least they're not living with the guy...).
4. Glass Mask - Kinda like a lot of manga/anime out there-- the main character has some cool ability. The heroine's a genius... actress.
Yeah, I know. This one's actually borderline.
5. GSD - Like I said, big robots. Though, I'll probably edit out everything but the fight scenes, and grab the OSTs just to play Homeworld or Starcraft with the music in the background. Very little else redeeming here, given the amount of complaining the fans have given...
Anticipated:
1. D.C. Second Grad - Although the first half of the original show didn't really do more than make me laugh, the closing arc was moving. I'm rather curious as to what they'll do the second time around.
2. Rozen Maiden: Traumend - Obligatory plug? Maybe this time they'll tie up the loose ends...
3. Mai-MAiD - Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot.
Another farce (the good sort)?
"I'm sorry, Fumi, but you're fired."
~~~HOT~~~(seen all eps out)
~School Rumble
school rumble is practically as good as Azumanga, that means its defiantly worth watching
~Erementar Gerad
The first half of the episode looks rather unoriginal (One Piece and Last Exile, Anyone) However after this it starts to really get awesome! Trust me, this is not some lame show about a kid pirate. Very cool, Very Cute (ahh Ren) and very interesting)
~Speed Grapher
highly recommended, I usually hate action and violence, but stuff that has interesting storylines and characters, (Gantz, Death Note) I can?t put down.
~Futakoi Alternative
starts off actionary but it gets deeper. Watch beyond the first few episodes, and you?ll see its something more then what it looks like.
~~~Warm~~~(seen all eps out)
~Honey and Clover
Like Niea_7, but with more humor and deeper characters. I?m looking forward to seeing more of this one
~Gokujou Seitokai
yakitate, gokujoi are comedy, i'm enjoying them quite alot
~Yakikate Japan
~Bleach
Not so hot on this series, but then I?ve read all the manga so far out and enjoyed it.
More series reactions here:

Welcome back, boss ^_^
Aaaah, I've been a bad lazy guest writer. However... I've got to admit that my initial anticipation has evaporated. It's exactly as you said: Freak of the week doesn't really motivate me, and if it wasn't for Kagura I'd have dropped it already. This ain't blog material. However, I'll finish Starship Operators bit by bit now with the DVD releases coming out.
There are two series which I'm eagerly anticipating, but which aren't anywhere near the old Mai HiME frenzy:
1) Futakoi Alternative
Excellent stuff with excellent direction. The story around the Shirogane twins and Rentaroi is really moving.
2) Gokujou Seitokai
This was a surprise for me, and I would have never touched this show with a 10-foot pole if it hadn't been warmly recommended to me from trustworthy anime friends. Anyway, it really has its charm, and I really dig Kaori. So that's a must-watch for me.
3) Honey and Clover
Good slice of life comedy. Again, I'm sympathizing most with the odd-girl-out loser character, "Iron Lady" Yamada. I wonder what that says about me? ;)
There are a couple of other series I watch for enjoyment, but they don't cause me to start torrents right away: Mahoraba, Erementar Gerad...
Overall, a VERY disappointing season.
I'm downloading a lot of anime as well but here's my list:
Going UP
1) Bleach, can't get enough of it each time an episode of this arc finishes
2) Yakitate Japan, I'm anxious to see Pierrot on the show
3) Honey & Clover for all reasons mentioned and it is such a sweet and oh so true story
4) Speed Grapher - I find Saiga quite intriguing and I hope Kagura finds her freedom
Going DOWN
1) Tsubasa Chronicle (sorry guys at CLAMP, but this has become way too childish for me)
2) Gakuen Alice (since it's more enjoyable for me having a subbed episode instead of a raw, which I have to watch more than once to actually understand it, and the subs take ages for this anime!).
Some of the ones I DO watch some time after I download:
-Mahoraba, Trinity Blood, Monster and Loveless
I'm excited about Mai Maid,
the second season to Mai Hime. ^_^
Does anyone know when it's coming?
"Honey and Clover" is definitely one of the best anime series out this season. Its so cute and the animation is consistent and the characters are so silly sometimes...overall, a surprisingly good series.
"Speed Grapher" was good...for the first 2 eps...then everything went downhill from there. The animation became such bad quality!! So disaapointed in it.
:(
1. Honey & Clover.
I like this series, mostly because I like the mystery of Mayama, Rika, and Yamada a whole heck of a lot. I want to know more, and the characters endear me.
2. Sousei no Aquarion.
Because it's not Loveless.
Up:
* Honey and Clover - like Furuba and Princess Tutu.. there's magic and poetry in subtle nuances - and there's the killer crack XD
* Gundam SEED Destiny - the characters start to grow on me - and there's something about epic, complex stories that make you wonder about the infinite circle of war and peace - and question the free will of man
Okay:
* Loveless (if only for aesthetical reasons)
* Sousei no Aquarion (everything's been there already, but it's well made)
* Yakitate (have read through the manga, not really interested in the anime right now)
* Gakuen Alice (if there only were faster subs.. *sigh*)
Down:
* Tsubasa Cronicles (it's everything I don't like about CLAMP's storytelling, prettily wrapped but disgustingly empty)
* Erementar Gerad (too generic, cardboard characters, very sloppy visuals)
Bleach (too slow-paced, losing the manga's dynamics in forced, pointless comedy)
Up
*Yakitate (Kawachi keeps on cracking me up)
*Sousei no Aquarion (honestly, I'm trying to stop, but the cheese is too good T_T)
Down
*Naruto (filler episodes are complete rubbish)
Great to see you alive. I enjoy reading your blog a lot.
Let's see, what I'm watching...
High
-Emma
I'm very sad there's only one more ep left of this. VERY good anime, one of the best in the season. I suggest you give at least the first ep a try, it's in all honesty a great series (if you like slice of life, try the whole series!) Very good animation, backgrounds, setting, it's all wonderful.
-Honey and Clover
Wasn't too excited about it at first but now I kinda like it. I never liked stories aimed at girls too much, but this handles the drama nicely and the humour is actually quite funny. I love the characters ('cept Hagu, but she's improving too), I love the production (even if the naimation's a little choppy sometimes, ep 7 was amazing), I love the whole atmosphere. I'm sad that the ED will change mid-series, I thought Waltz fit this series VERY well, I lvoe it when the ED 'cuts' into the last few seconds of the episode.
-Zettai Shounen
I dig these kind of series a lot. Slice-of-life, it seems, but there's definitely some sort of mystery going on. While the production wasn't as good as I expected, the backgrounds are great and the atmosphere is perfect. and I LOVE the music! It's really got me hooked. I'm really wanting to see how it all ties up. I can't wait for more, only 4 eps are out so far.
Medium
-Speed Grapher
Really, this did have potential but it's unfortunate that the storyline got kinda meh. The animation also... argh, even if they say the story is what matters, if you're going to use animation as a medium then do a good job, for cripes sake! I'm so disappointed in how Gonzo chooses which series to give the budget to :(
-Sousei no Aquarion
Aw c'mon, how could I put this at the top? I can't. It's not so funny recently either. But still, it does have it's hilariously cheesy moments and the soundtrack is great. Eh, guilty pleasure.
-Eureka 7
I'm getting a bit disappoitned with this. It's definitely very well produced; I am totally pleased with the production. BUt storywise it's lacking oomph and the kids are a humongous minus point. The slice-of-life bits aren't really handled too well IMO, some were hilarious (ep 7, was it? the ramen ep), but some just downright annoying. And there's a little too many cliches for my taste, but anyway, I have faith in Bones. It's not like this is really that bad anyway.
That' sbasically it, I don't have a Low cos I don't watch shows I don't like.
I'm also watching Future Boy Conan in between gaps. It has its inconsistencies in terms of some details and stuff ...which doesn't get excused just cos it's 1970s anime, but well, it's ok since it's a children's anime so you would expect exaggerations, and there are some nice unexpected details to make up for it. I can see how this inspired Fantastic Children, though.
Stuff I'm going to check out next season or later:
-GUN X SWORD
Seems kinda generic, I probably might drop this but I'll try it out anyway. The director's kinda good.
-FMP TSR
I hate FMP. But I love Kyoto Animation.
-Blood+
Isn't this the first time IG is doing a straight-on 50 ep series? I'll check this out for sure, the concept is ok too.
Welcome back Garten, hope you update your other blog a bit more too! Here's what I'm watching:
==Yakitate!! Japan==
Hilarious to the end, this is one of the best shows I'm currently following. I generally have the same thoughts as you do about the show.
==Gundam SEED: Destiny==
I've personally been a big mecha fan since I was a little kid, so this is a natural progression. I've never seen any Gundam series before the original SEED, but I've still enjoyed SEED and it's currently airing sequel Destiny quite a bit. If you like mecha in any way, this is a fun show to watch.
==Speed Grapher==
The 'freak of the week' aspects of this show are also a bit dissapointing to me, but at least this show has some athmosphere. It's also the most obviously 'mature' show I've been following lately and it's also nice to see some beautifully rendered Tokyo locations as well.
==Gokoujo Seitokai==
Awesome low-budget comedy about a girl who attends an all-girl's school where the student council rules all. Imagine if My-HiME didn't have all the fighting and only the high school hijinks, and then add in a bit more ridiculousness and you might approach the fun factor of this show. I hear Mentar likes this one too :) I highly recommend.
==Ah! My Goddess (TV)==
One of those shows that I don't watch for a few weeks and then watch a few episodes again for the hell of it. It progresses very slowly and not much happens in each episode, but it's a good 'light' show to watch if you don't feel like anything too much and you have some free time.
==Mahoraba ~Heartful Days~==
Fun show, but much in the same category as Ah! My Goddess, except I seem to like this show just a bit more. I can't explain WHY I like it because there's really not that much to it, but I keep watching it, so it must be good.
I watch the first eight eps. of Honey and Clover,
and...WOW!....Awesome =D
It's almost better (dare I say I it....)then Furuba.
I don't think any series would be better then Furuba.
If anyone wasn't seen it yet, please go watch it =D.
I'm so surpised that an anime is so good.
It's a very refeshing series.
That's an interesting meme you kicked off here and a lot of the animes which I view and you've done your summary for I feel the same about (lovely sentence structure there).
I have a flat rate and a fairly good download rate, so I actually download some stuff I haven't watched yet, so I follow your set-up
Top Anime I watch every episode of - more or less - right away:
Bleach
~ which remains my guilty pleasure for the coolness and the crazy characters and nifty style even in sword fighting. Similar guilty pleasures where Samurai Deeper Kyo and Shadow Skill.
Kyo Kara Maoh
~ so okay, in the second season they've had to clean up the end of the first one, which they did strongly and we've had two filler episodes now but I'm confident that they'll soon go back on track with the drama (they did lots of comedy stuff in the first 20 episodes of the first season, so maybe they're following the trend again?). The drama keeps me hooked, as do the bishounen.
Yakitate Japan
~ for comic relief ^^. No development in drama, even if the threats to baking success seem to become stronger, the reaction is always the same, which is fine with me.
Top Anime I watch when in the right mood:
Emma
~ since I've kept up with the manga scanlation I want to watch a certain part in one go and am saving my viewing pleasure there.
Meine Liebe
~ for the bishounen, but also because they've completely gone for a political coming of age story which explores different reactions to the challenge of wanting to change the future of your country's destiny. Okay, it's simplified, but then they only had 13 episodes.
Loveless
~ for the incredible artwork whether sd or not, whether spell or normal world, also I quite like shounen-ai (which is very tame here: avowals of love and an occasional kiss).
Anime I watch in batches when in the mood:
Major
~ it's a really different and good take on father and son in baseball and the realistic dynamics of the thing. Not like
Touch
~ which I still adore for the drama and the fact that I have found myself a fan of Mitsuru Adachi in general.
Twin Spica
~ which I pray AF-F will finish subbing at some point and which I love most of recent space anime (well Planetes comes close, and is probably dramatically better, if not as cute).
~and while I am at it
Cosmic Baton-Girl Comet-San
is to my mind the best magical shoujo for really young children (4 to 12 years) and I wish Hikari no Kiseki would do the rest, but I guess it's a dream
Hi I enjoy your comments on the anime you watch as well as the screencaps. First post as well!
I live in the U.S. and I am not (as of yet) an R2 buyer. Currently I follow a few titles on my own as well as the one showed on Adult Swim in Cartoon Network.
Saiyuki - I adore the manga. This is my most biggest obession. The new dub has been a little of a disapointment to me (funny how I used to say the same of the first one). There are always subs though. This show bores me at times yet I still watch it because I love those four guys and there V.A.'s. ; )
Samurai Champloo - To me this show is beautiful in an odd way. It's not visually sugary and cute. It's real and I love it.
Fullmetal Alchemist - This series is so intriguing. I've heard so much of it's supposed dissapointing ending. Yet, I am one of those people who does not really mind how the anime ended if the journey to the end was great.
Midori no Hibi - I love this show. I think I first heard of it on your site but looked it over till seeing it on Newtype. It's a hysterical anime. I even got my brother to watch it. Although there is an episode I have concealed from the ten year old. lol Still used to call it by it's original name.
I cannot wait to watch Genshiken. First volume comes out when last volume of Midori comes out. So I look forward to that. I want to hear Ishida's bad karaoke singing. Maybe that explains why he is not on any vocal albums as a singer. He probably exagerates ther though... I hope I'm right. lol
That's all that I am currently loving when it comes to anime. : )
Okay. Here I GO!
I?m only seeing Tsubasa Chronicles (Warm), Onegai Teacher (Hot) and Mahou Sensei Negima (Warm)
High:
Honey & Clover - I like it for the same reasons as mentioned a bunch of times :P I actually started watching it when I read all the positive comments about it. I like the atmosphere and the character(except Hagu, annoying little brat XD)
Emma - I love the chemistry between Emma and William, as well as the historical setting.
Medium:
Ichigo 100% TV - Mostly i like these kind of shows(hate all the beatings though, but this one is pretty much free from it), and I was enjoying it alot the first few episodes. But lately there have been too much pointless episodes, also, Yui is starting to go on my nerves. The animation is falling also, too bad.
Futakoi Alternative - Guess what, I haven't seen the original work :) But this was just a random anime I picked up, since it looked interesting(+I had alot of free time "those" days). I like the "crazyness" in it, and the characters are very likeable(the male-main character is also not a total looser).
Low:
Speed Grapher - It's dissapointing that it ends up here actually. I really liked the first two episodes, great animation and a more dark, mature setting.
Too bad the series started going downwards pretty fast, all this(you guys took the word out of my mouth) "freak of the week" is frustrating and not at all fun to watch. But the two mainchars is quite interesting. The only reason I'm still watching it(not on a weekly basis, I'm a few episodes behind also) is because the setting as mentioned above, and it feels abit different from the rest.
Trinity Blood - Looked good the first episode but became quite a dissapointment later on. I've only seen 4 episodes atm, but I'm not going to drop it yet, it's just not my highest priority now(only got a few hours/day free during this summer, how ironic).
Basilisk - I've only seen 2 episodes, didn't impress me, but it wasn't boring either. I don't like the animations and character-designs, but I like the violent nature of the anime, and they aren't afraid of showing blood. This is something I'm thinking of dropping, but I'm not quite sure. It's not something I have the time to watch now though, since I have work all day, all summer(and hopefully a year extra if I'm lucky).
Dropped:
Tsubasa Chronicles - The very first episode was a very good start, but it turned out way too childish and boring to me(dropped it after 4 episodes).
Erementar Gerad - Seemed quite interesting at first sight, but after the second episode I understood it wasn't anything I'm going to like watching. I just don't like the story, designs and characters...and that says alot.
Ah! My goddess - I really liked the 5episode OVA(and the movie) that came out 1993, but thought it was too short. So you can imagine the thrill when I heard they were going to do another serie. I didn't read any info at all before watching it, so I thought it was going to continue from where the OVA ended... Too bad I was wrong, not only was it a remake, they also made it very bad.
It just felt ridiculous, and the two main-characters that i liked so much in the old one were so annoying that I just had to drop it around ep9(yes, I forced myself for that long)
Watch it right after downloading:
-Honey and Clover
-Emma
-Glass Mask
And those 3 above are my top lists anime now.
Oh Yakitate and Monster are also good. But too bad, I have hardly enough time to watch these anime. So I'll wait until they're finished and watch them after that.
I absolutely adore Honey and Clover, it's just too great for words; it's just got airs of fruits basket and maybe kimi ga nozomu eien (well maybe not so much the plot line, it the human feel it has to it)
But I feel bad for probably being the only one who still likes Tusbassa chronicles. Maybe I'm getting nostalgic for the good old days of Cardcaptor Sakura, but most anime doesn't have to have secret hidden meanings and dramatic plot changes, that some of its contemporary's express. It's just that little hook of a familiar face, and a pretty simple story line, that allows you to sit down and watch it, plus a good sound track doesn't hurt its efforts. Also it's a refreshing change from the last thing produced from clamp now it's less hentai and now more innocent love.
Well that's my 2 cents, just don't poo poo me for disagreeing about Tusbassa not being a good series.
With a limited download, I have to be picky and therefore I've cut out a lot of shows from this season. Fortunately for me, I didn't like most of them! Like a lot of people here, my favourite anime is definitely the fantastic Honey & Clover ^_^ This series speaks to me because some of it is true to what I'm going through right now but it's also a great laugh. It is now firmly in my top 5 anime of all time.
Loveless is the other anime I'll bother to watch. It's had a few ups and downs for me but something about it has kept me going back for more (and no, it's not the shonen-ai thing).
I've watched up to episode 20 of Mahoraba but it's taken a back seat until I can download the most recent episodes subbed.
The worst anime of the season (in my opinion) is Tsubasa Chronicle and Eureka Seven. One of the reasons I pick ES over say...He is My Master or Sousei no Aquarion, is purely because I expected SO much more from it. As a big fan of Bones studio, I was pretty shocked at the low quality presented. It started off with a great first episode but the second and third warned me that my excitement over it was going to be short lived.
Already the new season has started with Kamichu, which I've yet to watch but from what has been said, it looks promising! My other hopefuls include:
Suzuka, Tide Line Blue, FMP: the second raid and Ichigo Mashimaro.
The only shows I watch religiously on a weekly basis now is:
1. Bleach - Am a fangirl. And the Soul Society Arc rocks my brains.
2. Gundam Seed Destiny - It's a good watch... Balance between action, plot, eye-candy and pairing-fluff.
I will refer to series which started in April
1. Season's best:
-Honey and Clover - Extraordinary, will be a classic. Superb art. Very appealing characters.
-Victorian Romance Emma - Very good. No gripes! Oh yes, and excellent music.
2. The promising stuff that has failed to deliver up to now:
-Speed Grapher - Good. Story: was very promising... but. Animation & art: idem
-Basilisk - Art & animation: very good; Story: promising but up to now has been really repetitive, very slow ("I kill you, you kill me")
-Trinity Blood - Animation: really good (except the CG, which they should learn from Zipang). Story: quite slow, not very catching, quite episodic
3. The stuff that's delivering more than expected:
-Futakoi Alternative - Good. At first I was thinking of dropping this one, but finally recognised good art & animation, and an interesting enough story
-Eureka 7 - Good. Story: quite promising, we'll see
4. Overall decent stuff:
-Eyeshield 21 - Good. I can't help it, I find it funny. Amusing characters.
-Loveless [shounen-ai] - Ok-enjoyable. Story: erm... quite flimsy. Good art.
5. So-so stuff:
-Ichigo 100% - Ok-enjoyable. Story: not very good
-He is my master [ecchi-stuff] - Ok, episode 4 was funny, but repetitive in general. Boring characters.
-Sousei no Aquarion - Probably too childish; excelent music.
-Zettai Shonen - Ghost-like-town-in-summer-with-kids-and-mystery-Airish-like-boredom. Why do these have to be sooo boooring ?
Atmosphere is not enough!
6. In limbo (will probably drop):
-Erementar Gerad - Childish, generic
7. Dropped:
-Marchen Awakens Romance - Too childish for me
8. Happily dropped after three episodes, no explanations needed :)
-Gokujou Seitokai
-The Law of Ueki
-Tsubasa Chronicles
there is this anime called Kyou Kara Maou i think its a up list. you should check it out.
Seems like a season for romance so, top two shows I look forward to eagerly are Honey & Clover and Emma. Only read a few chapters for the H&C manga and til vol 5 for Emma.
Pretty sure others (above me) have nicely described Emma so my only thoughts are that I love the characters and it has a lovely storyline following the manga (so far) very closely (which also is a good thing). Unfortunately, someone told me there's only 12 episodes so I'm quite puzzled since the manga has a lot more to offer than 12 episodes.
I follow Bleach religiously as well but don't read the manga. I look forward to this anime for it's action and really just to know what the (many) characters' abilities are. As well as if Ichigo manages to... do what he's suppose to do.. haha.
An older series I love dearly is Ghost in the Shell. Have to say it's #1 on my fav list. Fansubs are rather slow at the moment.. but it's coming to an end so will only watch it once the 2nd season is complete.
Other animes I'm following (but not as enthusiastically) are:
- Basilisk (keeping the series but stopped watching since ep 4)
- Kyou Kara Maou (keeping the series, stopped watching since ep 20)
- Loveless (the series is over but theres a few more episodes to watch. It didn't quite live up to my expectations sadly, animation is beautiful though.)
- Meine Liebe (coming to an end, storyline & characters are rather deep and loads of highly commendable voice actors.)
- Speed Grapher (still has my interest)
- Trinity Blood (same as Basilisk)
Stopped watching most of them because time really is an issue! =D Am also on a look out for new "good" animes, since there are a few ending soon.
Btw, I just wanted to say I really like your synopsis for H&C. Gave me insights on the episodes which I never really did think of until you mentioned them! Thanks ^^
I am up to episode 13 with Tsubasa Chronicles and it is getting way better. I have half the mind to stop watching episode 3 (what a boring filler episode!) but I am now glad i didn't. However the manga is still so much better. Bee Train didn't do a good job. But I am still curious how they going to execute such an intricate plot into the anime so I am gonna stick watching it.
About the distorted bodies, well I think it is art. We can't have all the anime drawing looking the same can we? It will be soo boring. The only prob I have with the anime besides the lack of humour is the facial expression.
No one has mentioned Tsukuyomi Moon Phase. Without going into details, it has a interesting story, humor, action, good character development, etc. Anyone else like it?
Uhm... currently following ALOT...
Most to all of them should explain themselves...
That's why titles were made ^^
