Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle 3 (Hardcover Edition)

January 14, 2004 | 16 Comments

It looks like I've become addicted to Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle's artstyle after all. I ended up purchasing the Hardcover Edition vol.3 from Amazon Japan because I was afraid if I don't buy it now, it'll be out of stock before I have the chance to get one. Besides, I find the series' entire dimension-travel story to be quite interesting. It makes me wonder, however, if some of the scenarios in this other dimensions could be a possibility in other CLAMP's series. For example, there is a particular dimension in Tsubasa, where Sorata and Arashi (of X) live happily together in an apartment that doesn't look that different from the place where Hideki and Chii (from Chobits) lives. Because of this, I wonder if this is a hint that CLAMP gave to the readers in regards to Sorata and Arashii's future fate in X manga.

Back to Tsubasa, CLAMP has decided to feature Kurogane on the cover as well as the box of this particular Hardcover Edition manga. In addition to this, there's a freebie in the form of a postcard featuring Shaoran and Sakura (this is the picture that is used in the normal edition of the manga). Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any bookmarker included here, unlike in vol.2 of the Harcover edition. There are also 4 colour pictures on certain chapters of the book. I decided to scan only one of them, however, due to the fact that one of the colour pics is not that interesting while the other 2 are connected together to form a picture like this. So, they're rather hard to scan (I got that last pic from an Ebay shitajiki auction).

Zack, before you do anything, please read this Information for English-Speaking Customers page. Have a good read through every single one of them. If possible, ensure that you switch your language preference on their site from Japan to English. This will help you a lot.

Now go to this link:

Tsubasa Vol.3 (Hardcover Edition)

That is the link to vol.3 of the limited edition version of Tsubasa. If you want the normal edition, go here:

Tsubasa Vol.3 (Normal Edition)

Vol.4 unfortunately is not available yet to purchase so you may want to wait for that one.

Once you go to those pages, you can see the usual "Add to Shopping Cart" button on the right hand side just like if you normally purchase items from Amazon US. If you had set up your language preference, most of the information in this 'purchase button' will be displayed in English.

Now, click on that 'Add to Shopping Cart' button. And you should get a page that contains a box like this one on the right hand side of your browser. This is basically your 'shopping cart'. You can edit your shopping cart as usual or you can proceed to check out. If you have finished shopping, click on that 'Proceed to checkout' button.

You should now see the Sign up page. Since you'll be a first time customer when you do this, you need to enter a valid email address and select that 'I am a new customer' radio button. Don't put in the password just yet. You'll create one later. Then just click that 'Sign in using our secure server' and you should be lead by the site's step by step guide on how to place your order. It's pretty much the same if you order through Amazon US. And if you had set up your language preference to 'English', you shouldn't have too much difficulty.

One last thing, just to be safe, use only either Mastercard and Visa credit cards since I am not sure what other type of credit cards they accept. But if all goes well, you should be able to get your goods depending on the speed of the delivery that you choose. You'll also get the usual 'product status' page that Amazon US normally creates. In other words, if you have used Amazon US beforehand, you shouldn't have too much of a problem with Amazon JP because they have similar interface with one another. I hope my brief explanation helps. But if you're stuck, please don't hesitate to ask another question.

Wow, yes alot. I hope to get the Three volumes that are out at the moment, but do you think that the First vol hardcover is out of print yet o_o?

Yes, unfortunately the first volume of the hardcover version seems to be out of print:

Tsubasa Vol.1 (Hardcover Edition)

The link above lists some of the Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle items that Amazon JP has, including the first Hardcover volume. Notice that there's no 'put this item into the cart' button (the yellow button with a cart icon in it) unlike the rest of them. This means that at one point Amazon JP had contacted the publisher and was told that the item is already out of print.

Now, there's a likelihood that another bookshop in Japan may still have a copy but unfortunately I have no knowledge of such bookshop. If you have a friend in Japan, you can probably ask them to shop around and find it for you. But if that's not the case, then unfortunately if you want the first volume, your best bet is to buy it second hand from auction site like Yahoo Japan using third party intermediary who is willing to ship the item to you.

Having said that, I don't recommend you buying it from Japan auction site unless you really really want it because the cost is extremely prohibitive and you have to go through a whole lot of trouble just to purchase an item. So most of the time it's not worth the time and money spent on it. This is the annoying thing about a limited edition item like this. While it's definitely attractive as it increases collectibility, it can drive you nuts at the same time trying to get them all :)

ccs, and now reservoir chronicle, is it true that the translated version will be called "tsubasa"? if true, another clamp translating flop.

Zack, according to the site, they have to obtain the item from the publisher if you want it. And it doesn't look too good since next to the status, they list that it'll probably take between 3 days to 3 weeks before they can get back to you in regards to the book's availability.

As far as the English version of Tsubasa from Del Rey is concerned, I think they'll called it Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle just like it is in Japanese. The only difference is, instead of writing the word 'Tsubasa' in Hiragana, the English version will simply spell it as 'Tsubasa' in roman alphabet. So no, it's not going to be a translation disaster. Del Rey seems to be quite respectful of the original version. The cover of the English version even look similar to the normal version of the Japanese version.

cool, thanks. because what nelvana did to card captor sakura, was a disaster, i could even see it from the begining how mutilated it was. such evil... i guess ill have to keep checking back at ebay like a hawk for now, ill respond if i can ever get it, i should try to atleast get the other two while i still can. thank you.

February 4, 2004 | Garten wrote:

Ah, I see. I agree that Nelvana's version of CCS was horrendous. I hope they stay away from importing other anime title unless they plan to do it properly. And good luck with your Tsubasa hunting! I hope you can get it!

i found all three of the tusbasa hardcover editions on ebay, i was going to bid on them but then the first two went out of my range of price, so i won the third hardcover edition vol 3, ill post back if i ever get the other two -.-
or the 4th one....

February 14, 2004 | Garten wrote:

Zack, I hope you don't end up paying excessive amount of money for them. Let's put it this way, if you have to pay more than what Amazon JP would have charged you for a brand new book+shipping/handling, then I'll say that you may want to just import it from Japan instead. Probably the only one you want to look from Ebay is the first one.

Where can i buy the Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle the english version in London Essex Shops?

I'm sorry Charlotte, but I really have no idea where you can find the English version of Tsubasa in London Essex Shops. Where do you normally buy your manga? I expect once Tsubasa comes out, it'll be available in whatever shop you normally buy your manga from. That's probably why you can't see it at the moment because English version of Tsubasa is not out yet. According to Amazon UK, it'll be released in April this year. You can order it through them if you can't find it anywhere in the normal bookstore:
