Well, this is it: the final episode to what I feel is one of the best series that was released last season. Despite the fact that the series ends on one of those 'life goes on' note, I feel that the series fulfilled most of my expectation and did not disappoint me unlike Fate/stay night. To me, the main attraction of the series are its characters, who despite representing several stereotypes, still manage to be interesting and unique. It's rare that I actually like all of the ensemble characters even down to supporting types like Taniguchi and Kunikuda. The storyline, while not exactly a heavy hitter, is entertaining in its own right. I am going to miss this series and I hope it'll get a second season in the near future. Kudos to Kyoto Animation for creating such an interesting series.

The episode begins with Kyon referring to Yuki, Mikuru, and Itsuki as an artificial human who's created by alien lifeforce, a girl who leapt through time, and a boy with ESP power. All three of them have proven their identity to Kyon. Cut to a scene of Kyon's sister trying to wake up her brother dragging him into the floor. At the same time, Kyon tells himself that there's one thing that he still doesn't understand and that is why he's also one of the ones who got selected by Haruhi. After all, Haruhi did wish for an alien, a time traveler, and an ESP user. But what about Kyon? He wonders why he got involved in the club when he's 100 percent normal and has no any special powers whatsoever. He wonders if Haruhi is the one who put him through all of these. Kyon wonders why he's the one who's worried about it. After all, the answer lies with Haruhi so she should be the one who worries about this. He thinks that Yuki, Mikuru, and Itsuki should just tell Haruhi about their identity.

Kyon's thought, however, is interrupted by the presence of Taniguchi. Kyon asks Taniguchi if the other guy thinks he's a normal high school student. Taniguchi is not sure about it since in his opinion, a normal high school boy don't usually cradle a girl in an empty classroom. He's especially impressed because Yuki is what he classifies as an A- ranking girl. Upon hearing this, Kyon decides to lie by telling Taniguchi that Yuki's literature club had been taken by force by Haruhi. Because of this, Yuki asked Kyon to help her persuading Haruhi to move to another place. The two decided to talk about it in a quiet place away from Haruhi. However, Yuki was suffering from anemia and fainted and Taniguchi saw them in the seemingly compromising act. Taniguchi reacts to this story by calling Kyon a liar. He tells Kyon that even if he believes Kyon's story, Yuki coming to Kyon for help in itself would make Kyon anything but an ordinary student.

This prompts Kyon to ask Taniguchi if he has super power. Taniguchi is weirded out by the question and thinks that Kyon has been infected by Haruhi. He tells Kyon to not get too close for him before laughing uncontrollably. By the time Kyon returns to the classroom after a PE session, she finds Haruhi still wearing her PE uniform and her excuse is because the day is hot. Moreover, she has cleaning duty today so she thinks it'll be easier to do the job in the uniform. Haruhi then asks Kyon what sort of dress they should try on Mikuru: Cat ears? Nurse uniform? or a Queen's outfit? It seems that Haruhi is feeling bored now. While inside the club room, Kyon decides to use the computer and turn on the tab that activates the hidden folder containing Mikuru's pictures. He then zooms into one of the pictures and notices the star-shaped mark on Mikuru's breast. Unfortunately for Kyon, Mikuru notices the folder and wants to know its contents.

Because of this Mikuru latches onto Kyon and tries to grab the mouse, attempting to see what's inside the folder. A panic Kyon tries his best to manuever the mouse so that Mikuru can't get it. As a result, it looks as if the two are flirting with each other with Mikuru grinding her body at Kyon. Much to their horror, however, Haruhi enters the room and asks the two what they are doing. Haruhi coldly asks Kyon if he's Moe for maid costume. Kyon does not understand what Haruhi meant but Haruhi tells him that they need to change and promptly kicks him out of the room. Later on that day, Itsuki comes and upon seeing Haruhi in her bunny outfit, he can't help from asking them if today is a costume party. A pissed-off Haruhi orders Mikuru to sit on a chair so she can play with Mikuru's hair. Kyon then ends up playing Othello with Itsuki and appreciates the normal feel of the situation. However, he's aware that Haruhi doesn't feel the same way.

That night, Kyon was lying on his bed when his sister enters the bedroom and grabs his scissors. She claims that she's going to use it in the practical art class tomorrow. At around 11:06PM, Kyon tucks himself into bed but manages to give a brief lecture about dream. He claims that a sleep consists of Rapid Eye Movement (REM) and Non-rapid Eye Movement (NREM) and these two go over interchangably. REM is a condition that happens when one's body is asleep and their brain is still very active. This is when dream normally occurs. That night Kyon is awaken by Haruhi and when he opens his eyes, he finds himself and Haruhi in the middle of the school ground still wearing their school uniform. Haruhi then explains how when she opened her eyes, she found herself next to Kyon in this area but she wonders how she got into this place to begin with. Kyon realises that the place is a sealed reality and asks Haruhi if she has seen Itsuki.

Haruhi, however, hasn't seen Itsuki and wonders why Kyon is looking for him. Kyon tells her that it's not important and thinks that they should make their way out of the school. Haruhi notices that Kyon seems to be calm about this and asks the guy if he's not surprised at all. Kyon doesn't answer her but he tells himself that he is surprised especially since Haruhi happens to be here as well. When the two about to step out of the school's gate, however, they are blocked by an invinsible barrier so they decide to check the back exit but finds it in the same condition as well. Because of this, they decide to enter the school's building so they can use the telephone in the staff room. This turns out to be fruitless attempt as well because the phone does not work. The two then make their way into the classroom and upon looking through the window, they realise that the outside world is covered by darkness, causing Haruhi to panic a little bit.

Haruhi, however, then tells Kyon that she's going out to take a closer look and orders him to stay inside. After Haruhi left, a red ball appears in front of the window and when Kyon opens the window, the ball shifts into Itsuki's shape. Kyon scolds Itsuki for being late and he's also surprised that Itsuki is not in his human form. Itsuki explains that if this had been a normal sealed reality, he would have been able to do that but this is not a normal one and therefore Itsuki has to appear in this form. He also adds that he and his companion's powers are slowly disappearing. Kyon asks Itsuki if he and Haruhi are the only two people left in this world. Itsuki confirms his guess and tells Kyon that what they feared is finally starting to happen. Haruhi has unconsciously become bored of this world and decides to create a new world. Itsuki tells Kyon that right now his superiors are in panic. Since Haruhi has gone missing from the world, it means the world could vanish soon.

Itsuki also informs Kyon that basically he and Haruhi have disappeared from their world and this is not a sealed reality but a new reality created by her. He thinks all of the previous sealed reality was just a practice to create a brand new world. Kyon, however, is more interested to know why he's in this place as well. Itsuki is surprised to hear this and asks Kyon if he really doesn't understand it. Itsuki tells Kyon that he's the one who Haruhi chose or rather, the person that she'd rather to be with. After saying this, the bright light that surrounds Itsuki's form begins to lose its shine. Itsuki thinks that his time is up and that at this rate, he may not be able to see Kyon again. Kyon is horrified to hear this and asks Itsuki if he must live in a grey world like this. Itsuki thinks that it'll be like Adam and Eve and they must repopulate the world. Kyon is not happy to hear this and promises to beat up Itsuki for saying those words.

Kyon wonders if they really can't come back so Itsuki tells him that if Haruhi wishes for it then maybe they can do it. Since Itsuki is running out of time and has now turned to a simple orb, he decides to pass on the message from both Mikuru and Yuki. Mikuru apologises and feels that everything is her mistake. Yuki, however, asks Kyon to turn on his computer. After saying these words, Itsuki disappears. Kyon then decides to turn on the computer but it doesn't seem to have any power. Nevertheless, Yuki somehow manages to hack into the network and type a simple text message into the screen. She asks Kyon if she can see the message she typed. After getting confirmation from Kyon, Yuki tells him that her ability to maintain this connection is limited so this maybe their last conversation. Kyon decides to ask Yuki what he should do in the situation. Unfortunately Yuki does not know because the abnormal data explosion has disappeared from their world.

She also remarks that Integrated data entity is disappointed by this because they lose the possibility to evolve. The entity believe that Haruhi has the ability to create data out of nothing. This is an ability that Integrated data entity does not possess. They believe if they can analyse the data explosion, they'll find a way to evolve. At the same time, Haruhi walks inside another classroom when she suddenly notices a bright light outside the building. Back to Kyon, Yuki tells him that she'll gamble her chances on him. She hopes that Kyon and Haruhi will be able to return to their world once more. Haruhi is an important observation target that they can't afford to lose and Yuki herself wants Kyon to return. As the flicker dims down, Yuki asks Kyon to go to the library again. Kyon panics to see this but Yuki manages to type one last message: sleeping beauty. After Yuki disappears, Kyon notices a bright light coming from outside the building, that of Shinjin.

Haruhi then burst into a room looking excited and starts asking Kyon if that thing is a monster or an alien? Kyon, however, decides to drag Haruhi out of the school before Shinjin starts to destroy the place. As they run out of the school, Kyon asks Haruhi if she doesn't want to return to the real world. He thinks they won't be able to survive in this place since there is no food. Haruhi, however, doesn't care about this and thinks that right now is interesting. Kyon tries to remind her about SOS-Dan but she doesn't care about that either because now she doesn't have to look for the mysterious things. Kyon, however, tells her that he wants to return. He tells Haruhi that before all of these happened, he never realises how much he likes their world. The world where Taniguchi, Kunikida, Itsuki, Yuki, and Mikuru exist. Kyon wants to see them again because he has a lot of things to say to them. Haruhi assures him that they'll see them again tomorrow.

Kyon, however, wants to see these friends in the old world, causing Haruhi to stop right in her track. Haruhi asks Kyon if he's not tired of that boring old world and wants something more interesting to happen. Kyon walks over towards Haruhi and puts his hands on her shoulder while telling her that at one point he used to think like that but he's been through some interesting experience in the past few days. He then tells her that there are people who are concerned about her and while she does not know it, the world actually revolves around her. A Shinjin then breaks into the baseball field and Kyon wonders what he thinks of Haruhi and decides that it's different from what Yuki, Mikuru, and Itsuki think of her. As multiple Shinjins begin to close in on the two of them, remembers what adult Mikuru said about Snow White and how Yuki typed 'Sleeping Beauty' and made the connection between the two. He then grabs Haruhi and tells her that ponytail is Moe.

Haruhi is confused to hear this so Kyon tells her that ponytail will look good on her and proceeds to kiss her on the lips. In an instant, the Shinjin are sucked into whirlwind that surrounds the two of them. Kyon then wakes up on the floor of his bedroom and is horrified upon remembering his 'dream'. The next day, Kyon wakes up with uncertainty if this is the same old world or a new one created by Haruhi. When he gets into the classroom, however, he spots Haruhi wearing a ponytail. Haruhi tells Kyon that she had a nightmare last night and therefore couldn't sleep properly. Despite this, Kyon tells her that the hairstyle looks good on her. Later on, Itsuki thanks Kyon for what he did but he's not sure if this is the same world or a new one that Haruhi created last night. Having said that, he's glad to be able to see Kyon and Haruhi once more before returning to the class. Kyon then meets Yuki who informs him that he and Haruhi disappeared around 2.30AM last night.

Kyon asks Yuki if there are other lifeform like her in this earth and Yuki tells him that there are a lot of them. Upon finding out about this, Kyon wonders if they will attack him like Ryouko but Yuki assures him that she won't let them. Mikuru then enters the clubroom and immediately cries and runs towards Kyon upon seeing him. She tells Kyon thought that she won't be able to see him again. Kyon tries to comfort her but Mikuru suddenly runs away from him, telling Kyon that if Haruhi sees them, the same thing will happen again. Upon hearing this, Kyon asks Mikuru if she has star-shaped mark on her left breast. Mikuru is shocked and embarassed to hear this but upon checking it herself, she realises that this is true. She wonders how Kyon knows about it since she didn't know about it herself until Kyon told her. Mikuru then playfully punches Kyon but she becomes horrified when Haruhi suddenly appears behind them carrying a nurse outfit.

After this, Kyon finally submits the SOS-Dan application form to the student council. He, however, decides to change the name from Suzumiya Haruhi's club to make the world a more exciting place to assisting the student council to change the world association. Despite this, the search for mysterious events continues so Kyon is now seen waiting for Haruhi alone. It appears that Yuki, Mikuru, and Itsuki claim that they all have something else to do. Kyon then looks at his watch and claims that he's been waiting for an hour. He then looks at the train station and sees Haruhi coming out of the area. Kyon decided to come earlier since there are only the two of them and whoever comes later will have to treat the other. Kyon thinks that they have a lot to talk about such as Mikuru's next costume but right now he has decided that there's something else that he wants to discuss with her: that of aliens, time traveler, and ESP users.

Impression:

I feel kind of sorry for Kyon for having to take the hit for the entire world. But kidding aside, from what we've seen in other episodes that actually comes after this event, Haruhi does change slowly in to a better person. To me, however, the most interesting part of this episode was the one where Kyon expressed his desire to see his friends again. Until this event, he never realised how much he likes them and wants to see them again. For some reason the line reminds me of Shinji's line in The End of Evangelion where he said that even if they may hurt him again, he wants to see his friends once again. Kyon does not have the same problem as Shinji but in the end, he realises the worth of his friends which is not very apperent during the earlier part of this series. This explains why by the time the story reaches The Day of Sagittarius and Live A Live, Kyon is remarkably at ease with most of his friends and even visited their class activities.

Overall, this had been a very interesting series to watch. The series mixed different types of genre and actually managed to be good in almost every single one of them. The characters are entertaining to watch and I have to say that I've been enjoying Sugita Tomokazu's stellar voice acting work. Without his narration, I don't think the series would have worked as well. I'm also glad to hear his voice as Kyon to be different from his voice as Mayama in Honey and Clover. I really recommend anyone who enjoyed his performance as Kyon but never got the chance to see Honey and Clover to give that other series a look. While I'm keen to see a second season, I think I'll prefer it if it's done after the novel series is completed. In the meantime, I'll be occupying myself with the special edition DVDs. I hope Kyoto Animation will release an extra which has the full Hare Hare Yukai dancing sequence. It'll be nice if there's an additional episode on the DVD itself.

I'm going to say that the director made a bad directing choice this time

This arc should have came before the Culture Festival

The reverse character development is jarring.

seeing Haruhi decide that "yes, the world can be fun if I make my best of it" should have been the climax instead of this arc's "oh, I'll give the world a second chance, since Kyon said so. Plus, he kissed me, giggle giggle...

To quote an internet meme, I will say this to the director: you're doing it wrong

I think Mellow RG may be missing the point here...

At least from the novels, Haruhi never wanted to give the world a second chance (nor did she had the knowledge she had the choice, or did she "giggle" after the kiss), actually she wanted to stay in the world the giants were smashing. The only reason why they came back to the original world was because of some "mixed data" inside Haruhi's mind that focused her attention on something else instead of thinking how boring the current world was (think of DBZ, the fight inside boo, where every enemy transformed into cakes).

You gotta remeber that is Haruhi we are talking about, she never realized that what happened was real. For her everything was just a nightmare after all. And so, she came back to herself after this event :)

And yes, a second season is a must :)

Stay so true to the novel chapter is great.
But I don't like the fact that changed the sentence of Kyon returning to class noticing Haruhi piggytail. In the novel after Kyon comments Haruhi took the piggytails off, it gave you a sense that did she really like Kyon is that the reason she come back? or is Haruhi just shy infront of her. Leaving a some what open question, but the director decided to gives his own version...

*spoiler starts*
I belivied Haruhi is shy of her feels infront of Kyon, cause in the novels that are many little bits of stuff that Haruhi does that will make you think this way.
*spoiler ends*

This is easily where the series should end for season one. Not only does it involve a dramatic turn, which the culture festival episode lacked, but it also follows the first novels ending.

Sheesh, half of the reason for tuning in IS Haruhi's and Kyon's relationship. Letting it climax too soon would be goofy.

Mellow RG: Well, according to MOON-PHASE, the reverse-order here is actually at the author's suggestion (aka: the guy who wrote the Haruhi's novel), as stated in an interview... so we can blame him for the confusion this caused. :D

Still, it's not a BAD ending, although it's one which I'm left scratching my head at, at least because I'm trying to figure out what happened. I'll have to wait for the AFK sub, I guess.

It is one of the best anime technically.
Possibly you may dislike some characters and a story.
The staff produced it faithfully and enjoyed it.
There were a lot of careful parody description.

Fighterdoken... having said that, it is clear that you do understand the plot, but it is you who does not get my point -_-

Let me try to make this as comprehensible as possible..

The series should have ended with with the cultural festival arc, where Haruhi reaches the conclusion that yes, life can be fun. People are not potatos. THIS is what the Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi is about.

This sleeping beauty arc, on the other hand, has a vague open ended feeling to it, and is actually regressive in terms of character development.

To you maybe.

To me this is about a God in the form of a teenage girl growing up and learning what life really is.

And even if you're that one track minded, the cultural arc had better closure for them too.

Well, this episode was "obviously" regresive in terms of character development. I mean, is actually the 6th chronological episode for Haruhi's sake... you can't wait to have them give Haruhi a raison d'etre here and then take it away by the 7th chronological episode.

Over the cultural festival, i would say that it was just another nail on Haruhi's madness coffin. Luckily, the series never uses events of the "*gasp*, now i understand the sense of life" kind (the only thing that Haruhi got 'clear' after the cultural festival was that she could create her own Bandol).

Haruhi changes after the singing experience, sure, but also does after meeting Kyon, and after this episode, and after the beach episode... Everyone in the series is always changing (or growing), but not enough to define one event as their "lifechanging momment" (those happened 3 years ago).

This series has a lot of points of view that you may or may not share (but even if you don't/do they still exist/not exist... :P). Is not only about God-Haruhi growing up, or about the Kyon-Haruhi relationship... or the adventures of a group of high-school students on a traditional anime setting, or the value of frienship, or about the search of happiness, or existencialism (sp?), or multi-dimensional time-travel theories, or the value of a normal life, or the power of "one", or making money with a well known light novel (wait...), or who knows what else...
...Well, actually, is about all that, maybe that was why there was so much people that liked this show.

(And if you still insist in how bad this chapter is 'as ending', and how great the ep.12 would have been, well, luckily you can just go back and watch the series in Haruhi's or your own order... i think the author would approve that... actually, everyone should do it, they may find some neat things that way :P)

So yeah, I'm all for the episode shuffling. Besides if you don't like it you can always watch it in the chronological order this time, now that the series has ended :D

I second, third, fourth & 100th the motion to make a second season! xD I don't care when it comes, as long as it does!

Well, it's finally over.

I'm glad to see the series go out on a fairly high note, although this particular episode seemed just a shade under par. The music could've been better, certainly; perhaps a second or two of dead silence at **that moment** followed by a gentle swell of choral music, gradually building up to the thundering sound of an orchestra at full tilt before fading back into nothingness as Kyon tumbles out of bed . . .

But that's just me. In any case, this has definitely been the best (yes, not one of the best - THE best) series of the season as far as I'm concerned, and I really am quite sad to see it end. Normally I wouldn't touch sci-fi/fantasy/mecha/apocalyptic anime with a ten-foot pole - up till now it's always been real-world, slice-of-life stuff for me (with a fair bit of action, blood and gore thrown in of course). SHnY did a marvellous job being both in this world and out of the galaxy at the same time. I can revel in Itsuki's cosmological babblespeak and marvel at Yuki's fighting techniques on the first pass - then throw it all out and just enjoy the rhythms of normal high school life on my next viewing. There's something in this show that makes it well suited for just about any mood, any time, any desire.

Now, at the end, and having read what's available of the original novels, I can understand why they made a tossed salad of the episode order. I may have disagreed with it strongly at first, but now I wouldn't have it any other way.

And Kyon's last line makes for an absolutely satisfying finish.

Three cheers for SHnY, and chalk up another vote in favour of season two!

Watching **that moment** again, it seems at first glance (or rather on first hearing) that the score they used has all of the characteristics I suggested in my previous post. Superficially, yes, although what I actually have in mind is very different. I'm also a little disappointed with their choice of music for the blue-giant/ running-through-the-school scene as a whole. There's a bit of a mismatch between the triumphant score and the dark, ominous setting. I suppose it reflects Haruhi's joy more than Kyon's apprehension, but even then, I think they could have done better.

But for the most part, a great effort - and a satisfying conclusion (as I wrote earlier).

P.S.: A plea for assistance. Could someone tell me what the difference is between the 6,930-yen and 5,880-yen versions of DVD 1? I'm thinking of ordering the DVD from Amazon.co.jp (since it probably won't be available from either Amazon.com or Amazon.co.uk for quite some time) and I'm trying to work out which of the two versions is the better option. I understand that there won't be English subtitles (or, at least, GOOD English subtitles) but let me worry about that . . .

Diego, the 6930 Yen DVD is the limited special edition one. Some of the extras include: 2 episodes, packaged in special digipack case with special illustration, CD containing the soundtrack from the episodes and radio broadcast, 5 trading cards, as well as the making of Haruhi clip

The other version (normal version) only has the making of Haruhi clip and not the special digipack, postcard, or the CD. I hope that helps.

I have been following this blog for about 2 years but have never posted. I only say that because this is the first time i have felt like posting after finishing a series.

Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi is one of the most enjoyable series i have seen. And since i have been watching anime for over 20 years, this is a rare thing indeed. I found everthing to be just about right: the animation, the character design, acting, music and even the episode switching. I have never read the novel but i liked how the took a simple, almost harem idea, and switched and tweeked it enough to produce something with such a different feeling. By harem i mean that you have an ordinary student (Kyon) with no special abilities, surrounded by cute girls, (who have a thing for him) each with special abilities and a string of extraordinary events. And everyone else can tell that Haruhi has a thing for Kyon but Kyon himself. Usually this set-up gets on my nerves after a while but with this series i never even noticed.

I completely agree with Garten on the choices for the actors. Kyon was pitch perfect. In fact everyone was great. I found myself laughing out loud at a great deal of the thoughts that would run through Kyon's head.

In regards to the episode order, all i can say is... relax. I feel that if the last episode had been played in "proper" order the series would have been dragged down into a typical "Are Kyon and Haruhi ever going to get together?" The order allows the series to focus on the other characters and its' strange slice of life feel.

Last but not least, i really liked the character of Haruhi. It is very difficult to portray a self-centered, bossy and arrogant character as something more than a cliche. She was all those things but i felt sympathy and a sense of understanding for her. The makers of this series did an excellent balancing job of keeping her in character but you still felt the characters develop. So many shows change the character in order to advance the storyline. Life doesn't change (for the most part) in great big flashes. In most anime and storytelling it does because that is an easier way to tell the story. In The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi manages to convey change but almost without you noticing it.

All in all, well done and heres hoping for a second series.

postscript: Am i the only one who was hoping for more out of Kyon and Yuki? They seem to work really well together.

July 5, 2006 | extraclassiclite wrote:

There isn't one, because the episodes are not only out-of-order in their own continuum, but were chosen from different places in the novel volumes. Basically, there are plenty of incidents and stories that take place between those in the anime but which are never seen in the anime, only hinted at by other episodes or objects around the clubroom.

Not having read the (translated) books I have no idea if this is correct but there is a small scene in this episode that seems to imply Mikuru is Kyon's sister??!

In this episode (MoSH VI) when Kyon's little sister grabs his scissors she gives him the one eye closed look and taps her head. In MoSH IV future Mikuru does the same thing! Coincedence or not?

July 5, 2006 | Myssa Rei wrote:

Small Fry: Nothing is really revealed in the novels about Mikuru's origins, though there are a lot of theories floating around about it, due to the tantalizing hints dropped by the books and the anime.

All seem to agree that Mikuru is related to either Kyon or Imouto in some way. I prefer the "great-granddaughter of imoutou" theory myself.

You know what small fry, I think you're right. . .I was wondering why they would even put the scene with the little sister taking the scissors out of kyons room, since it didnt really make any sense for it to be there and had no purpose, but it seems that the writers are giving the viewers a hint! It does make sense why mikuru would act the way she does to kyon, I'm thinkin "Big brother complex" here. but yeah i mean why else would that scene be in there, the ep without that scene wouldnt make any difference in the ep it self, so I think that the scene was definately a hint, an "easter egg"

So. . .Where can I get these translated novels again

Will there be several continuing series titled:
The Sighs of Haruhi Suzumiya
The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya
The Vanishing of Haruhi Suzumiya
The Rampage of Haruhi Suzumiya
The Agitation of Haruhi Suzumiya
The Intrigues of Haruhi Suzumiya
The Indignation of Haruhi Suzumiya

The Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya
=> most of this book is already on this first series

The Rampage of Haruhi Suzumiya
=> The day of Sagittarius is from here

The Agitation of Haruhi Suzumiya
=> Half of it is already in this series (live alive and the adventures of mikuru asahina)

I think that 2 more "14 episodes series" would cover all the books released so far

NHK ni Youkoso means "Welcome to NHK!"
NHK is an abbreviated designation of Nippon Housou Kyokai.
Nippon(japan)
housou(broadcast)
kyokai(corporation)
NHK is public broadcasting such as BBC.
However, a meaning here is an abbreviated designation of Nippon Hikikomori Kyokai.
Hikikomori means A man whom he do not go out from his house, and do not work.
It is hopeless otaku.
it is a story of some disgusting otaku.

The easter egg hunt is about that little full-body shot of Mikuru changing waaaaaaaaaay back in episode 05... Apparently, Garten hid it behind one of the linkable screenshots he posted during his summary (which was very very easily found)... It was harder to find Kyon's hidden stash on the SOS-Dan website by comparison. :)

July 6, 2006 | Ersyth wrote:

Mediocre summed that up nicely: "For a god, Kyon ain't too bad of a guy. Great series."

The way the novel is written (and how the anime is narrated) pretty much implies a lot of the God!Kyon thinking, but even so, it's still interesting.

I kind of thought that the series ended well, and it wasn't surprising that they used the end of the first novel as the last episode. The series revolved around a girl who could literally remake the world, and making the last episode the story where she almost (or possibliy) does seems to impact better than one of the other chapters of the novels.
Remember, it was during the first novel that Haruhi seemed to be the most unstable. Her dissatisfaction with the world in general, plus the lack of support from anyone else, was building even while she made the SOS Brigade. Whether one cares about the romantic relationship between Kyon and Haruhi or not, the idea was mainly another sort of trigger for her to realize that maybe the world doesn't need a remake after all, or that maybe other people matter.

The point is, Kyon was a major influence on Haruhi, and the episode pretty much underlined what she meant to him and vice versa, whether they liked it or not.

Or something. ^^

Let's hear it for a vote for a second season, though I have no clue what it'd be about.

And so the world goes out not with a bang, but with a kiss. Not to say it's any less good, and although I would've preferred the cultural festival theme-wise (Haruhi learning to enjoy life for life's own sake, not because she was chosen), Kyon's last line more than made it up for me. He, too, gave up his beliefs about espers, aliens and time travelers (although interestingly, he did it later than Haruhi IIRC) and seeing him talking to her about it is really nice. It's not a semi-romantic thing like festival's, but in a way, this ending brings them on equal terms and rewards both. It's not just Kyon trying to tell Haruhi how to have normal fun---although I don't see Kyon normally having 'fun' either---he's enjoying his time together with Haruhi. That's a good thing, for me, and not from a romantic perspective.

Haven't you read Catch-22? To me, the episode shuffle seems a homage to another great satire, and I delight in it.
Incedentally, I like the ending. But I tend to defend many endings that others find unsatisfactory, like that of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy.
Here's to a second season!

Does anyone know why Kyon is experiencing all the action? I think the reason is, Haruhi did mention that she wants to have an exciting life and if it's not her then someone else is and that someone happens to be Kyon. Anyways, the show was good and I hope they continue making new ones. Thank You

8D I loved this anime! It was a blast watching it, it's too bad my experience was a bit lessened because I watched it in chronological order (accidentally, the site that hosted it showed it in chronological order!). Nevertheless, this has always been my favorite episode. Kyon's last line was a nice finishing touch to it. I enjoy the Closed Space parts very much, the music was awesome, and the plot for this episode was very satisfying.

My theory for the reason why Haruhi brought the real world back still stands. I believe that she thought that it was just too good to be true, for him to be kissing her out of the blue. Something like, 'This isn't for real...', or 'This can't be happening...!' And so, was inspired to wake up as soon as possible, to be able to have a chance to win Kyon's heart. Also, she probably didn't know what to do after the kiss ends ;D . Yes, very cheesy, but whatever 8D

I do hope this isn't the end though, I am so eager to see the 'Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody' plotline! >

Lol, don't misunderstand, I'm not a nerd who steals names from animes. My nickname really is Kyon, and I was suprised to find out that this particular anime's main character's name is Kyon. (sweat drop)
Anyway, commenting about this episode..
I personally think that this episode shows the emotions of nearly all the characters and how they feel towards Haruhi and Kyon.
Yuki, Mikuru, and Itsuki all seem to like Kyon in their own way. As for Haruhi..
Yuki - Is simply observing her, has really nothing against her. Couldn't say that I think she likes Haruhi, but I know she deffinetly doesn't hate her.
Mikuru - I think Mikuru can be affraid of Haruhi sometimes, but all in all, she gets along with Haruhi pretty well, ne?
Itsuki - He states that he "fancys her" but are the feelings romantic? Seems more like he has the crush on Kyon.. (lol, kidding) I'm not quite sure because Itsuki is so mysterious, but does he consider Haruhi a burden at times? He sees her as an upper being, but I couldn't say that he particually likes her a lot. (You can have a crush on someone, but it doesn't you can like them as a person or anything. o-o)

This episode portrayed how each character really liked Kyon though. I think Haruhi has romantic feelings for Kyon, but she herself doesn't really realize it.
Kyon may feel the same way, but even if he did he'd probably try to smack himself a couple of times to see if that's what he really just thought. (Lol)

Anyway, thanks for the summary! ^_^
