This episode turns out to be awesome. Everything from the animation to the way the story unfolds just scream quality. The anime elongates the fight between Kishin and Shinigami a little bit but it is surprisingly well done. Also of note is the soundtrack that is used in the episode. I was especially impressed with the piece that was used as a background of Shinigami vs. Kishin fight. The episode pretty much concludes the Medusa arc but by the end of this episode, it's obvious that the arc will have a lasting impact on subsequent arcs in the series. Although I was rather confused with what the Kishin said to Shinigami about how they won't see each other again after this. I got the impression that Kishin is meant to be the ultimate chaos so I don't understand why he won't return to create some more shenanigans for Shinigami-sama.
Continuing from the previous episode, Eruka is freaked out upon seeing Kishin. Black Star, on the other hand, wants to get rid of the problem as soon as possible and insists that Tsubaki turns into Fey Blade. She, however, refuses because Black Star is already weak. Refusing to give up, Black Star decides to attack the Kishin on his own. Much to both Black Star and Kid's shock, however, a simple flick on their forehead was enough to knock them out. The Kishin then uses his own skin to make clothing before jumping out of the room. Before he manages to completely disappear, however, Maka manages to hold onto a piece of his skin, trying to stop the guy. On the surface, Blair and the mouse witch continues to suffocate each other with their boobs, causing every man on the street to nosebleed profusely. The fighting and the nosebleed stop when the Kishin shoots into the air, dropping Maka down along the way. Soul has to transform back into his human self to catch Maka. Before the Kishin can run away, Shinigami-sama already appears in front of him.
The Kishin wonders why Shinigami's mask and voice sounds different so Shinigami-sama explains that he has to do this in order not to scare the kids at the school. His old mask and voice would have scared them. With that said, Shinigami-sama apologizes but he has to kill Kishin again. Shinigami then uses his hand to hit Kishin all the way back to the ground. Kishin retaliates by charging upwards and producing his weapon, Vajra, out of his mouth. The attack manages to destroy Shinigami's mask, pissing off the owner in the process. Shinigami tries to rip Kishin's skin but finds out that his can't no longer reach the Kishin after certain distance. Kishin tells Shinigami, who turns out to be his ex-teacher, that they probably won't see each other again before disappearing into the sky. In the aftermath, Shinigami asks Sid to protect the children and to contact the DeathScytes all around the world. As for Eruka, she's just happy that she's finally free from Medusa's control. Speaking of Medusa, she managed to bite Stein's neck before Stein destroy her body with the scythe. Unknown to Stein, one of her snakes managed to make it out alive.
Impression
Something doesn't sit right with me about Kishin. If the guy is really evil, he would have wasted both Black Star and Kid right away. Instead, he just gave them a flick on the forehead, enough to incapacitate them but not kill them. Granted, it could be argued that he wasn't in his full power at that point but it still weird and makes me wonder if there's more to Kishin's story than what we already know. Especially since now we know that Shinigami-sama actually puts on a figurative mask to play his role as a headmaster. It seems he's a lot more terrifying in his real form. On a more humorous note, when Maka was using Soul as a weapon by slamming him into a rock, I wonder if it hurts him. I guess I still can't reconcile the fact that a human is actually a weapon as well. Anyway, it was nice of Soul to use his body as a cushin for Maka. On that note, Maka's hand trying to reach the Kishin for some reason reminds me of Asuka's hand trying to reach the MP Evas before they violently skewered her.
This episode was hot.
SHINIGAMI CHOP!!!
awsome episode!
Shinigami-sama is pretty funny and he uses his chop attacks against the kishin.
About Asuka and that moment was pretty gruesome, I felt sorry for her. Oh well they all turned into LCL.
I'm not really liking how Free looks like in the anime, though he is a werewolf but there's no need to make his ears that pointed. In the manga, his ears were just normal looking.
Kishin ran away in a snap, Shinigami could only do a chop and Medusa didn't die. Quite a quick episode of escapes and misses don't you think?
I think the reason he said he wouldn't see Shinigami again was because Shinigami can't leave Shibusen, and he intends to just do as he pleases without ever returning there (which makes sense since he wouldn't want to get skinned again).
Garten: well, the manga itself already implies that everyone is in the gray, there is no black and white. Without even going on about newer material that hasn't been broadcasted, you could tell there's something weird abotu using witches's souls as ingredients for Death Scythes, no? We've seen that witches aren't always evil, so why the heck are they combined with 99 Kishin eggs?
And Kishin probably only hates Shinigami anyways, and the faster he gets out of there the better. no need to mind people you haven't even seen before, right?
I love this episode. Shinigami-sama and the Kishin are so awesome.
There's one thing I don't get, though. I thought the reason Shinigami-sama wasn't able to leave Shibusen was because the Kishin was sealed there. So if the Kishin's awake and ready to leave Shibusen... then shouldn't it be the same for Shinigami-sama? Unless I overlooked something, of course.
I can't wait for episode 25!
@Kaze - Yes, back in 19 Maka asked if Shinigami would be able to leave if Kishin was freed.
Stein explains that the seal was permanent and that Shinigami wouldn't be able to leave unless Death City grew legs (a suggestion that came complete with animation of...the City on hairy legs running over the desert!)
Awesome episode an as it has alredy been point it out
SHINIGAMI CHOP!
beautiful
Not only the manga has implied that everyone is in the gray. This episode itself was pretty revealing as well.
Just look at shinigami's reactions to the kisshin. I've never expected so much anger (and we all know where that leads, right yoda?), and cursing from shinigami...
So that's my two cents.
Loved the episode. I was pleasantly surprised by the music as well. Loved the chanting in the fight-scene. ^^
@ lmd_84:
Ooh, right, I remember that scene! Thanks for reminding me.
@ Kaze:
I belive it was said, that Shinigami-sama couldn't leave Death City. So as long as Shibusen is there and the enemies are in the city, he sould be able to fight them. That's probably the reason, the Kishin just left. He knew Shinigami-sama wouldn't be able to follow him.
@ Garten: I think Kishin was telling Shinigami that because Shinigami cannot leave Death City, and because Kishins going to go off and cause chaos throughout the world, that Shinigami will never be able to catch him.
The truth is that Shiigami could move about at one point in the series, long before the series started actually. He stayed at Shibusen for so long that his soul was . . sewn into the ground in a fashion. One that acts as a shield for Shibusen and Death City.
"Although I was rather confused with what the Kishin said to Shinigami about how they won't see each other again after this."
Shinigami didn't have a deathscythe and he was a match for kishin. What do you suppose would happen if shinigami fought kishin with a deathscythe? He doesn't want to get beaten by shinigami, so he let shinigami know that once he's gone, he's gone.
My two cents.
when are you posting more episodes???
O_O
