As I thought, the interesting part of this particular arc lies in the second half of the story. It's like there are 3 separate stories here. The first one is the continuation of Chrona vs. Kid's fight, which is far more intense than Chrona vs. Maka's fight seen a few episodes ago. I think if Kid wasn't too pre-occupied with irrelevant things, he'd probably be able to defeat Chrona. The second story is the continuation of Maka/Soul's problem with the Black Blood and Medusa's involvement in it. It's nice to know that this particular plot is resolved right away. The last part of the story is actually a sub-plot of the second one but I feel that it actually gives side characters like Sid-sensei and Eruka a bit more exposure than what they normally get in this series. I just hope that this is not the end of their characters because I'd like to see how powerful the adults are in comparison to the students.

Episode 16

The episode begins with the battle between Kid/the sisters and Chrona/Ragnarok. Kid easily gives out beatings to Chrona thanks to his ability to move fast. Much to his surprise, however, his attack doesn't seem to have effect on Chrona. Chrona tells Kid that if "Ochibi-chan", possibly referring to Ragnarok, couldn't understand Chrona's feeling then Shinigami like Kid wouldn't be able to either. Liz realizes that Chrona is similar to her and Patty when they were just muggers on the street. In the present time, Nidhogg's head is still alive and sends bombs to attack Chrona in retaliation. This, however, only causes Chrona to be even more pissy. She sends an attack to destroy the ship, effectively splitting Nidhogg's head into two. Kid tries to chase after Chrona but he gets distracted by the trail of fogs that point towards the sun. As for Nidhogg, he's actually still alive and intend on continuing his job even though his head was split into two and is severed from his body.

Back at Shibusen, Maka has just been going through a check up with Medusa, who claims that there's nothing wrong with her black blood. She, however, gives Maka a herb medicine, hoping that it'll accelerate the effect of the black blood. She also wonders if Soul still sees the small demon in his dream, causing Maka to be angry because Soul never bothered to tell her before. After Maka left, Medusa is confused when she can't find Maka's blood sample and health record. Much to her horror, Stein is in the room and has seen both the record and blood sample. He questions her decision to give Maka a medicine that he never even heard off. Stein wonders if that is something that a girl or a witch should do. Before Medusa can do anything else, however, Stein has expertly maneuver his way out of the room, acting goofy as usual. After he's out, however, he's surprised to know that he was shaking after sensing her intent to kill.

Outside the school, Kid suddenly turns gloom and tells the sisters that he has something he wants to ask his father. Inside, Stein, Sid, and Sid's weapon are discussing the possibility that Medusa really is a witch. Sid intends on finding out more about her by visiting her house so Stein warns him not to go too far. Meanwhile, Medusa is seen communicating with Eruka through the snake that she placed inside the other witch. When Sid arrives at Medusa's house, he realizes that her house looks more like the house of a witch than the house of a doctor. He also finds a diary which details Medusa's intention with the black blood. Before he can get out, however, he's surrounded by a bunch of black blobs. These are egg bombs that Eruka has placed inside the house. Meanwhile, Kid asks his father what "The Kishin closest to us" actually means. He believes this is the reason why his father can't leave Shibusen so he wants to hear the truth.

Highlights:

* Patty asking Liz that what she wants to know the most is if Chrona is a boy or a girl. LOL. So it's confirmed that Chrona's gender is still unconfirmed.
* Stein vs. Medusa chilly confrontation. I thought Medusa will transform into a snake and bite off Stein's head.

Impression:

I'm glad that Medusa is finally being caught red-handed by Stein. I really hate series and movies where the heroes can't figure out that there is a villain right under their nose. That'd just make the heroes look dumb in comparison to the enemies. The only exception to this is if the viewers themselves are not let in on the secret and don't know who's the villain and who's the good guys. At any rate, that's not the case here. Stein was clever enough to find the proof that he needs and got out of the dodge before things get too dangerous. I didn't expect him to be afraid of Medusa though because I thought their power level would be similar but I guess that's not the case? Speaking of Medusa, before Maka got infected with the black blood, I thought she and Soul will have some kind of issues due to the blood in question. However, now that she too got infected with the black blood, for some reason I'm not worried anymore. Last but not least, props to Kid for finally confronting his father about "The Kishin closest to us". Is this a reference to how a technician can become Kishin if they take non-evil human souls or if there's more to it?

Next week: looks like a filler? And an annoying one at that since it stars Excalibur.

The last time Stein faced Medusa, he had Maka's
dad for a partner/weapon. He may be weaker than
Medusa when he's unarmed.

Besides, a battle inside Shibusen would tear the
place up bigtime, and maybe endanger some of
the students.

Best to avoid a confrontation until more favorable
circumstances can be arranged.

Dang. That's true. I never considered the possibility that techs might not be as powerful when they are not accompanied by their weapon. I assume this is applicable to all other technicians as well?

This really was an awesome episode; I read the manga already, but seeing it animated is just much better (especially for the action scenes!)

And the scene where Kid questions his father makes things much more interesting.

I wonder what happens next week...

Chrona sounds more like a boy even though her VA, Maya Sakamoto is a girl so I think he'll be revealed as a boy.

You will not be disappointed. The comparable levels of power between the student characters and adult characters becomes fairly important later on.

And AnimeFan188 is correct in his reasoning. While Stein-hakase would be in better shape than most other meisters, since he has the somewhat rare ability to use his soul frequency offensively without a weapon to focus it, he's still considerably weaker without a weapon. And Medusa is very impressive, to say the least. ^_^

Has there been one fight where Kid is not distracted by one thing or another?

I wouldn't want to be with this guy when facing against the bad guys. God knows he could be distracted by the bad guy's sychronised attack.

I think, Chrona said "Usagi-chan" referring to Maka... at least I read it in the manga... or they changed it for the anime? 'cuz I haven't seen this episode yet, just read it in the manga...

Not in the anime. In the anime Chrona clearly says "Ochibi-chan" and Chrona's eyes were pointing at her wings, which is essentially's Ragnarok's. They then cut to a short flashback showing chibi Ragnarok.

Garten - Yes, the Technicians are more powerful with Weapons than on their own.

Not only do they focus their power through them, but it was said by Kid in episode 5 (I believe) that the Weapons provide physical power in a fight; check out Shinigami's guitar analogy.

This is as true for the students and other Techs as it is for Stein.

ahem....

is it just me or does kid sound a bit like tamaki???

i really wanna know what maya's mum looks like and what type of person she is, she must've really loved the father to actually have stayed with him so long

Andi - Kid sounds like Tamaki because he's played by the same VA...whose name escapes me.

No idea what the anime is going to do about Maka's mother, but don't dismiss Spirit too quickly. He's a good bloke, and he and Kami must have gotten on well at some point; they were Tech/Weapon partners as well as married, after all.

Kid's symmetry obsession is a gift and a curse; can render him totally useless, but get him in a situation without distractions and he's formidable. Wouldn't really want to fight with him, but I'd sure as heck not want to be his enemy.
