Although Death the Kid can be pretty stupid, Miyano Mamoru does a good job of voicing him. In a way, Kid reminds me a bit of Tamaki because the voice that Miyano employs for this particular character is pretty similar to the voice that he used for Tamaki. Death the Kid is not the only thing that is funny about this episode. The pairing of Black Star and Soul as partner is a pretty amusing concept as well. In fact, the whole Soul/Black Star vs. Death the Kid turns out to be very funny, making this the funniest episode thus far. It makes me wonder if I actually prefer this kind of comedic-based episode than the endless fight ones. Oh well, let's see what happen next week since that should be the one where the group goes on a mission again. But between this and last week's episode, I definitely enjoyed this one a lot more.

It's the first day for Kid and the Sisters to go to school but they're already 3 hours late because Kid is too busy ensuring that every single item in his house, including the toilet paper, is symmetrical. Inside the class, Maka tries to point out to Dr.Stein that ever since he became their teacher, they've done nothing but dissection. Much to her horror, he tells her that today they'd be dissecting something different other than mouse/frog. They'd be dissecting a bird on the brink of an extinction. As for Soul and Black Star, they've decided that today they want to be each other's tech and weapon. Understandably, Tsubaki and Maka are worried about this latest development. As it turns out, however Black Star simply wants to assassinate Kid because he can't stand the fact that Kid is more famous than him. When Kid comes to the school, he thinks Soul is there to show him around but Soul is not amused and believes that Kid is one of those 「親の七光」 - (Oya no Nana Hikari), someone who capitalizes on his/her parent's fame/wealth. Kid being the symmetrical freak that he is, begs Soul to change 7 into 8 because when the number 7 is sliced in half, it's not symmetrical.

Kid's babbling is interrupted when Black Star decides to do his usual, obnoxious speech about how he's better than thou. In the process, he breaks the statue that he's standing on, pissing off Kid in the process. Before long, Kid asks Patty/Liz to transform into gun and Black Star asks Soul to be his weapon. Their fight is immediately noticed by other students. Maka is unhappy about this and also aware that if there is a fight between two tech on the school ground, more than one staff member has to deal with it. Back into the fight, Black Star and Soul are completely owned by Kid, who does a good job of fighting them regardless if it's a long-range or a short-range attack. Soul tries to attack from the top but Kid easily shoots him with one of the gun (Liz, I think), causing Soul to writhe in pain on the ground. The sisters explain that they are different from normal gun in that they shoot their condensed soul wavelength. In the meantime, Maka, Stein, and Tsubaki have made it outside to see the fight. Because Maka can now examine soul wavelength, Stein asks her if the wavelength of the two guns are in sych with Kid's. Maka confirms Stein's guess.

Maka explains that normally it's very hard for a tech to synch their soul wavelength with two weapons but they are very stable. She feels that the two guns admire Kid. Stein confirms that since the sisters grew up in the street, they admire Kid's dignified soul, whereas Kid admires the sisters' positive souls since he's a nervous wreck. While Maka and Stein are busy making their assessments, Soul and Black Star are busy telling themselves that the power of their love...err..friendship will produce limitless massive power. Much to Black Star's horror, he can't even lift Soul's scythe form. Soul finds this strange because even Maka can lift him easily. Maka explains that this is what happens when the soul wavelength are not in synch. If that's not bad enough, Black Star inadvertently drives his soul wavelength into Soul, causing the later to spew blood. Because of this Soul suggests that it's over because when they're close like this, he feels like he's going to hate Black Star. The two, however, assure each other that they are still BFF.

Unfortunately for them, their buddy buddy act is cut short by Kid's guns. Because of this, the two swear that they'll win this fight. Despite their resolve, Kid still manages to defeat them. At one point, Black Star manages to pull Kid's leg, forcing the guy to fall down. Unfortunately, Kid manages to pull Black Star and slams him against Soul's face. Fed up with the two boys' over-the-top taunts, Kid decides to show off his power by unleashing his soul resonance with the two guns: Death Cannon. Much to everyone's surprise, although the attack blast both Black Star and Soul, it's Kid who collapsed and vomits blood. Maka points out that the failed attack that Soul made on Kid actually cut Kid's hair a little bit. Kid, being the symmetrical freak that he is, unable to bear this and spat out blood and falls unconscious. Because of this, the two sisters have to carry Kid back home. Oh, this means that Soul and Black Star become the default winners of their little fight. In the aftermath, the techicians and weapons reconnect with each other again. Maka also tries to see Shinigami-sama's soul to no avail. Unknown to her, Shinigami-sama's soul covers the entire Shibusen area.

Highlights

* Kid ends up going to school 3 hours late because he has such a bad case of symmetrical OCD.
* Stein trying to dissect an endangered species.
* Tsubaki worried about Soul/Black Star partnership that she throttles Maka.
* Soul/Black Star's BFF acts. 'Tis the season to stock up on BL.
* Kid's soul wavelength. Very impressive. If only the owner is a lot more cooler
* Black Star's inability to pick up Soul's scythe form.
* Kid's soul resonance with Patty/Liz. Again, very cool but...
* Kid vomiting blood after he finds out that his hair is asymmetrical. I can't imagine how fun would it be to make fun of Kid and exploit his weakness.
* Shinigami-sama's super awesome soul wavelength. There is a good reason why he's elected to be the head of Shinigami and this is enough proof.

Impression

It's like the almost every series this season play up the BL angle of their two male characters. On this show, it's Soul and Black Star's turn. It's very amusing to see the two ganging up on Kid only to get their ass kick. Still, it's very nice to see two male characters who are actually friends with one another instead of being competitive/bitter rivals. It was amusing as well to see them charging ahead even though they're clearly outclassed by Kid. Even more interesting is the fact that even if a technician and a weapon gets along with one another, their soul wavelengths do not necessarily match each other. Although Patty/Liz are often frustrated by Kid, they seem to admire him and vice versa. I'm sure the same can be said for Maka/Soul and Black Star/Tsubaki. They basically complement each other. In other note, I'm intrigued with Maka's new ability to analyze the soul wavelength of her classmates. Even though it wasn't that long ago that she acquired this ability, it seems she's been able to use if quite effectively. Last but not least, I want to know if Shinigami-sama's soul wavelength actually acts as some kind of barrier protection for the school as well? It seems to be the case judging from the ending.

Ah this ep was good fun and plenty of lulz. But me wants the serious fights again, and hopefully the next few episodes will be able to deliver some intensity.

Yeah, this one is pretty funny although they really need to tone down Black Star's obnoxious attitude a notch or two. It's fine for a humorous episode like this but it gets tiring after a while.

Is it wrong that this episode makes me want to read Soul/Black Star doujin? :P

Although on a second thought, that'd be pretty annoying doujin since both are extremely hyper.

@ anna-w: my exact thoughts ^^

This looks like a fun episode. I'm hoping for more episodes like this one, leaning more on the humorous side than fights. But i admit i'm pretty fond of the action sequence in soul eater as well. So i'm glad they're combining both strengths of this series in every episode. It's pretty refreshing for a shounen anime.

I wouldn't mind a fighting episode as long as it doesn't drag on and on for tens of episodes. If it's just one or two episodes it's okay. Plus, it'd be a waste of the animation budget if this series doesn't get some good fight every now and then.

I'm glad to see them addressing the question that most shonen fans always ask "who will win if so and so get into fight with each other"?

But still, I want to see who will win in a fight? Maka or Tsubaki? Soul or Black Star?

Why can't every series look this good? Where does Bones get their money from?

Great show. Now, if only we'll start seeing some fights already.

I think Maka vs. Tsubaki can't possibly happen neither can Soul vs. Blackstar since one is technician and the other is a weapon. They are meant to help each other.

May 13, 2008 | comma ce wrote:

hmm, i kind of like the idea of different technician can use different weapon but I guess that's not the case here. I think it would have been awesome incase one of the technician is injured so the other technician has to use the weapon, etc.

Another great episode. I am impressed that the animation holds up even after 6 episodes. Normally things already go out of control around this time.

I think you mean dad, not dead?

I'm looking forward to the next ep, can't wait to see Chrona & also Stein use Death Scythe x3

Freakin' funny! Now, Death the Kidd is way stronger than both of them combined... but, his OCD shit is getting in his way hardcore!

Is there a reason why the Shinigami-sama's soul thingy covers the entire citiy? I am hoping so because that would be more exciting than just because he's powerful.

May 13, 2008 | RmX wrote:

@Nero: Actually that's a very important point in the main arc. =P

Aren't they making fun of Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann, shouting something about "power of friendship" and then trying to combine? :D lol, that looks just too similar to be a coincidence...
