This is probably the most violent of the 3 prologue stories. While the first two episode showed the more playful side of the story, this one is pretty twisted. I certainly didn't expect the change of villain halfway through the episode. In fact, I thought the main villain they'll face in this one is the witch. Animation-wise, this episode is still as good as the first two. I guess having Square-Enix as one of your sponsors does help with the budget. Even mundane scene like Maka and Tsubaki wondering where their boys are look clean and well-designed. By the way, halfway through the episode, I was wondering why Kid sounds familiar to me and then it hit me that he sounds exactly like Light from Death Note. It looks like Miyano Mamoru uses his Light voice to voice Death and that voice is far easier to recognize than whatever voice he decides to use to voice Zero in Vampire Knight.

A thief has just broken out of a palace when all of a sudden, a shadow jumps out of the moon. The shadow tells the thief, whose name is Lupin, that it's over. He then orders his two guns, Liz and Patty, to transform into their human forms. The three then create a superhero pose, causing the thief to roll his eyes. The boy, whose name turns out to be Kid, is unhappy that Patty's pose is not perfect so he proceeds to scold her. Patty's older sister, Liz, reminds Kid that this is not the time for this, but Kid refuses to listen. As a result, the thief manages to get away. Kid is obsessed with symmetry and gets upset with the fact that the girls are not perfectly symmetrical. He then points out an example by squeezing their bazoomas, which results in him getting punched by Patty. Patty also points out that Kid's own hair is asymmetrical (there are white streaks on the left side of his hair), causing the boy to become depressed.

After he calms down, Kid uses his power to contact his father, Shinigami-sama. Shinigami-sama reminds Kid that he doesn't need to do soul collection because he's already a Shinigami. Kid, however, insists that he wants to make a weapon of his own. Because of this, Shinigami-sama tells him that he needs to collect twice as many souls since he has two weapons. Meanwhile at the Shinigami school, Maka/Soul and Black Star/Tsubaki meet up again, and end up talking about Kid. At the same time, Kid is on his way to a pyramid in Egypt after his father told him about the Pyramid of Anubis, a place where a necromancer witch makes mummy with a huge collection of wondering souls. Since Kid likes the symmetry of the pyramid, he finds the idea interesting and decides to head there. Not long after they enter the pyramid, however, Kid tells the two sisters that he feels a picture frame in his house is tilted to the right.

Because of this, he wants to go home and fix said frame. Liz would have none of this nonsense and drags Kid deeper into the pyramid. She, however, comes to a halt when they bump into a bunch of mummies who seem eager to make them their meal. Liz wants Kid to kill them already but as it turns out, Kid is not there anymore. He really feels that he needs to check the picture frame. Because of this, Liz and Patty have no choice but to take turns using each other's gun form to kill all of the mummies who try to attack them. Meanwhile, the necromancer witch is in the middle of performing a ritual to awaken the Pharaoh. Eventually, the Pharaoh is awaken but it grabs the witch and kills her. Because Kid is back in his house adjusting his picture frame, he doesn't know that Liz and Patty are now being attacked by the Pharaoh. Back at school, Black Star and Soul are asking their homeroom teacher, Sid, about the identitiy of Kid but Sid only tells them that the guy is not his student but Shinigami-sama's son.

Speaking of Kid, he's now back at the Pyramid and finds Liz and Patty all tied up in bandages. It doesn't take long before Kid is also attacked by the Pharaoh. Despite this, he manages to release Liz and Patty from their captivity. But before he can use them to shoot the monster, he ends up in a daze. As a result, he gets mercilessly pummeled by the Pharaoh. It seems Kid hesitates to attack because the Sarcophagus looks perfectly symmetrical. Since Kid refuses to use the gun, he almost die at the hand of the Pharaoh. However, the Pharaoh makes a mistake of getting out of his Sarcophagus, causing Kid to realize that the actual Pharaoh is asymmetrical. Kid is angry at this fugly creature and ends up blasting it away to stratosphere. In the aftermath, however, he also inadvertently destroys the Pyramid, causing him to be depressed. The episode ends by showing the 3 Shinigami groups: Maka/Soul, Black Star/Tsubaki, and Kid/The Twins.

Impression:

It looks like every single main male characters in this series has some kind of negative traits. Soul tends to do something without plan, Black Star is a show off, and Kid suffers from OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder). I don't mind it because it makes them a bit more humane. Plus, it was amusing to see Kid getting his priorities all wrong. Going back home to check on picture frame was ridiculously funny because it's not the kind of thing you expect from a shounen hero like him. The writers are also clever enough to include an appearance of the homeroom teacher, Sid, who'll make another appearance next week, albeit in different form. I thought it's a rather nice way to introduce the character because in the manga it feels as if the students don't actually know him that well. Once again I'm surprised at Soul/Black Star friendship. I guess after watching many episodes of Naruto, I always expect two male characters to be each other's rival. Well, these two are competing with each other but there's also a sense of camaraderie and strong buddy vibe with one another.

This episode is made of awesome xD Thanks for blogging and for the screencaps ^_^

I also find it amusing that the main boys have personality defects! Wahaha! And it's great that Soul and Black Star are buddies even if they're rivals. Rivals in most shounen usually hate each other, and I'm getting sick of seeing too much that x_x

Looking forward to the next episode ^_^

Wow. They actually included Sid in this one? Nice. And the animation is still nice too. Unbelievable. On other series, this episode is usually when the animation starts to look crappy.

Keep in mind that Miyano Mamoru also voiced Tamaki in Ouran as well. The similarity rises a lot when Kidd goes emo.

Now that the prologues are over, main story's coming next week.

I am really enjoying this anime! I think it has the best OP and ED of the current animes...even tho I do like the xxxHolic OP quite a bit.
Plus the animation for this show is really good and the characters are as best described very unique haha. Thanks for continuing 2 blog it and for the screenshots!

Man, this was a great episode. I think I enjoyed this episode the most out of all three so far. In my case, voice acting of Mamoru Miyano reminded me of Tamki. ^^

At least he didn't use the voice of Aoba from Tokimeki Memorial.

Neverhtheless, this ep continues the fun from the first 2 eps. Definitely liking what I see.

This has nice animation and all but I still don't get the plot. Is this just going to be a one-off story like this one? Hunting evil witches, collecting soul? Or would there be a much interesting storyline later on?

@Oubo

The first eps are just prologues that introduce the characters so, SE doesn't actually start until ep 4 and whole "Soul Collecting" kinda dropped quicky.

That mummy reminds me of Anakaris from Capcom's Darkstalkers.

I think if they wanted to make this even better, they should have provided a background story on why Sid ends up becoming a zombie. As it is now in the manga, there's no explanation on what happened. This is the problem with most shonen series in that they are more concerned with the fights than the actual story.

@Bororo

We do know that Stein was the one to turn him into a Zombie, just not his cause of death other than having a hole in his head. I don't think that it big of deal since he's mostly a minor character, who appears peroidically.

This episode is probably the best out of the three so far. Miyano Mamoru is really good as Kid, although he sounds exactly like Light and Tamaki.

I like Death the Kid the best! The whole animation for this series reminds me of Gorillaz (animated virtual band).

So anyone can confirm if there are any differences between the regular and uncut versions??

This was my favorite episode by far! Death the Kid amuses me to no end, maybe because I too have some OCD-ish tendencies (though not to his degree, of course). XD And I usually don't like side-kicks like the Thompson sisters . . . but I actually really enjoyed them in this episode. Patti's my fav of the two; she sounds cute and is a bit oblivious and cheerful, hehe. Again, that type of character usually annoys me, but some reason . . . ?

Oh, and the darker tone of this episode made me excited, too. Yay, gore! Lawls.

this episode lived up to previews.

i love that death the kid left his comrades in the middle of the mission to go back and check whether the painting was hanging crooked. it just proves that successful people are all obsessive compulsives ;p must be a lot of pressure, being god's only son. is he even an only son? i have no idea. how exactly did god spawn? i've been curious ever since ep. 1 when maka's father was said to be a talking sword.

the boobs obsession gets a little tiresome. garten, your screencap--w/ his two gungirls (the ultimate weapon girlfriends) staring at a chalk outline of where he should have been--still cracks me up. just make me laugh, and i'll even suffer through icky unfunny gore like a witch's hand crawling around. plot not required.
