Sensei no Ojikan ep.6

June 25, 2004 | 0 Comments

I've been wondering lately if this series has lost its ability to deliver a good laugh or two. Apart from the first and second episodes, the rest of this series has been quite mediocre so far. So I'm glad to see this episode finally return to the form of the first two episodes. Admittedly, the same juvenile comedy and the usual character's repertoires are still in place. But thankfully, the repertoires are actually used in a more interesting scenarios in the episode. In addition, this episode benefits from the introduction of a new girl character called Nakayama. After seeing the role that she's been given, I hope that she will at least make Watabe a bit more interesting.

The story itself is a bit simple. Mika-Sensei and her students need to come up with an idea for the culture festival. As usual, the disfunctional students end up imagining the sort of things they'll like to do. Seki, for example, wants to open a fortune-telling stall where he gets to predict the future of a pretty lady. But since this is Seki, the 'pretty lady' in his imagination turns out to be himself. Kitagawa and Kudo want to see a miss and mister contest but of course the only candidates that they have in mind turn out to be Mika-Sensei and Suetake respectively. Watanabe, on the other hand, is too busy doing his doujinshi for the culture festival and can't be bothered to help the other students to decide the sort of activity that the class should do. At the end of the day, the class decides that they will simply present a theatrical performance of 'Snow White'.

When the class is over and the students start to go back home, Mika-Sensei realises that a girl has been following Watabe. But it seems this girl is the shy type and therefore she has never been able to talk to Watabe. The next day, the class end up doing a lottery ticket to determine what kind of role each student should take. Kudo at first is a bit depressed because he feels that he is never lucky in this kind of lottery. He, however, changes his mind when he finds out that he's been selected to play Snow White and Suetake is selected to play the Prince. Anyway, once all of the roles have been assigned to each student, practice session for the play begins. The most hilarious part of this episode then appears when a bunch of blushing female students from other classes line up in front of Mika-Sensei's class to watch Suetake and Kudo acting like Tamahome and Miaka of Fushigi Yugi.

The next day is the costume day and as usual, Seki is very proud of his own beauty when he gets to dress up in the Evil Queen costume. His happiness, however, disappears completely when he finds out that the girls think that Kudo as Snow White looks way prettier than Seki. Seki immediately looks green with envy and thinks that he now can play the role of the jealous Evil Queen with full emotion. LOL. At the same time, Watabe finally completed his doujinshi drawing. But unfortunately, no one seems to be interested to visit his doujinshi stall let alone join his manga club. Never the less, he gets some consolation prize when the new girl tells him that she has always liked his manga and wants to join Watabe's manga club. Watabe, however, is horrified when he finds out that the girl's drawing is really bad, ending the episode.

Impression:

A very funny episode throughout, mostly thanks to Kudo, Suetake, Seki, and in some scenes, Kobayashi and Kitagawa. The new girl is quite interesting although at this point in the story doesn't seem to get that much screen time. Watabe, unfortunately, continues to be as boring as usual. Although I'm hoping that he'll be a bit more interesting from now on since there is another character that actually shares his interest. I also wished that the episode had shown a little bit of the 'Snow White' play. As it is now, I feel as if someone had cut the episode and deleted the part where the students get to perform their roles. I just think it'll be funny to see the play on its own, especially if the play turns out to be as wacky as the practice sessions.
