Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

Well, that was a good end to the trilogy. Everything seems to be wrapped up nicely and the ending is quite good in that bitter-sweet kind of way. Still, since I've never read the book beforehand, I don't know if it actually follows the original story faithfully or not. For example, towards the end, I get the impression that Eowyn seems to have transferred her crush on Aragorn and moves on to be with Faramir. But it happens all of a sudden at the end of the film that I get the feeling that there may be an additional scene or two in the original book, which shows how the two get closer to one another. I supposed this is the sort of scenes that will show up on the Special Edition of the DVD. Or at least I hope so because I find Eowyn and Faramir to be two of the most interesting characters in the film.

I also think that for a movie that has a subtitle 'The Return of the King', the movie itself feature little amount of screentime for that said King (Aragorn). I would have, for example, like to know a bit more of what Aragorn thinks throughout all of these. I want to see him showing a bit concern for his friends, his fear and his hope. The same with Gandalf, Legolas, and Gimli, who I felt, never get that much character development in any part of the trilogy. I think there was too much focus placed on the big battle scenes, which admittedly, can be quite tense and exciting at times. However, after a while, the battle scenes get a bit repetitive (the enemy attacks, the hero defends the city, the enemy almost wins, unexpected help comes for the hero, rinse and repeat). So I wished they had trimmed it a little bit to give some good character developments for Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli. But then again maybe these three characters never get that much character development either in the book.

Anyway, I don't want to be too much of a downer on the film because I did enjoy some parts of it. For example, I really like the Eowyn vs the King of the Ringwraith scene. That was quite unexpected to me and I supposed it's one of the pleasant side of not having read the book beforehand. I didn't expect her to charge and fight the Ringwraith King like that. I also like some of the character development that was given to Faramir. I feel sorry to see him being dismissed by his father like a nobody just because he can't live up to Boromir's reputation. The part where he went into the battle even though he knows that he's walking into death is very painful to watch. And I am even more disgusted to see his father gobbling on his food while his son is heading off to what could have been his deathbed. I also like the ending which I think is quite fitting for this trilogy. Overall, I think this is quite a good film which could have benefited from a much tighter editing.
