Pretear ep.5-7

February 8, 2004 | 4 Comments

Remember when I said that this series doesn't seem to take itself seriously? Well, I was wrong. Big time. Not only this series starts to take itself seriously starting from episode five, it also starts to feel a bit like the typical magical girl plot which kind of disappoint me a bit. There's nothing wrong with the story or anything bad like it. It's just I feel that I've seen this kind of story beforehand and in a much better shape and form. I was hoping that Pretear will somehow twists the story of Snow White and its breathen rather than following it closely while slightly modifying its storyline.

But enough whinging on my part. The fifth episode starts with Himeno having a nightmare of being on a bridge which looks a lot like the Rainbow Bridge and ends up meeting her ultimate nemesis, the Princess of Darkness, Saihi. Meanwhile, we get to find out that somehow Hayate and Saihi were once connected with one another. It's for this precise reason that Hayate has been guarding Himeno day and night. Well, that and because it seems that he's fallen in love with the klutz. The episode ends with the Leafe Knights under attack by Saihi and even after destroying the monster of the week, ends up being overwhelmed by additonal monsters which are sent by Saihi. After a while, however, Saihi decided to abort her attack and left the scene after telling Himeno that she'd better prepare herself to die if she's as weak as she is now.

In the sixth episode, Himeno has become depressed at the thought that she may end up losing to Saihi. This makes her father and the maid, Mikage, worry about her condition. Speaking of Mikage, I've been wondering if she's actually the one who planted one of those monster seed in Himeno's potplant. If you look at her physical features, she does look quite similar to Saihi/Takako in some respects. On top of things, you have to wonder why she got so much screentime in the series. Anyway, this episode also shows Mawate and Himeno's father having a father/daughter moment. Mawate seems to have warmed up a little bit to the idea of having Kaoru as a stepfather. Meanwhile, Himeno, who intends to find out more about Saihi decides to take a trip to the Leafe world. When the Leafe Knights found out about this, however, they realise that they can't keep the secret from Himeno any longer and decides to let her know that Saihi was actually a Pretear like herself as well.

The seventh episode continues from where episode six left off with Hayate explaining to Himeno that Saihi was once a girl named Takako who was chosen to become a Pretear before Himeno. At first Takako was afraid of her role but because of Hayate's encouragement, she becomes a strong Pretear. However, when she tells Hayate that she loves him, Hayate was unable to return the feeling because he doesn't feel the same. Depressed due to the rejection, Takako allows her sadness and anger to corrupt her power and she ends up becoming Saihi. Hearing this tale seems to have a rather negative effect on Himeno because the next time she ends up facing Saihi and one of her monsters, she seems to have lost her ability to become a Pretear. The episode ends with Himeno and Hayate being attacked by Saihi's tentacle monster.
