I don't get this version of the series sometimes. When the scene calls for a dramatic moment, the anime goes comedic instead. But when the scene is supposed to be comedic, the animators completely miss their mark and just go on as if nothing has happened. This is really unfortunate because the anime has now reached an interesting point within the story. However, it's hard to enjoy the story when I get distracted by awkward cuts, scenes that miss their mark, and weird landscape shots. That last one was especially annoying in this episode. I love my art-y screenshots as much as anyone. But I think there's nothing art-y about a shot of an empty grass field or the outside of an apartment building. Especially not when they're drawn in a generic manner and without a specific focus given to a particular object within the scene.
This episode itself begins with Isabella arriving at Atelier inviting everyone to have lunch since she just made some roast beef sandwiches. Since the weather is nice, George suggests that they all go to a park for a picnic. Isabella, however, realises that Yukari is late, prompting Miwako to tell everyone that today Yukari is going to tell her mother about everything. Everyone is worried about this so Isabella asks George if he will save Yukari if she's in trouble. George, however, refuses on the ground that he doesn't like to get involved. As the four prepare to leave Atelier, Miwako remembers that Yukari said that she's going to run away from home if her mother refuses to understand. Isabella is horrified to hear this and wonder what they will do if Yukari comes while they're still out having picnic. Because of this George asks Miwako to give Yukari a call but in the end this is not necessary because Yukari manages to arrive before they leave.

Yukari, however, arrives with two bags, suggesting that she's running away from home. She tells everyone how last night she told her mother about everything and was rewarded with a slap across the face. Because of this, that night Yukari thought a lot about many things and eventually decided to leave her home. Upon hearing this, Isabella and Miwako reassure Yukari that they'll support her decision, prompting George to remark that Yukari has 'bad friends' because they don't try to persuade her to return home. Anyway, Miwako tells everyone that in that case she needs to go back home and clean a guest room so Yukari can sleep there. Yukari, however, doesn't want to inconvenience Miwako and therefore wonders if it'll be okay if she sleeps in Atelier instead. George objects at first on the grounds that everyone pitches in for the rent. But when Arashi tells Yukari that she can stay if she pitches in as well, George objects the idea anyway.
Yukari, however, continues to argue for her case on the base that she's going to get a part-time job while everyone's at school. The others are quite surprised to hear this especially after Yukari tells them that she's going to quit school. She thinks since she's not taking an entrance exam, there's no point on going to school. Miwako thinks it's cool that Yukari is going to ditch school but Arashi begs to differ and ask George to set his girlfriend straight. George, however, thinks that this is up to Yukari herself. In the end, Yukari ends up boarding at Arashi's house since he himself stays at Miwako's. Apparently Arashi does this because he doesn't think it's right for Yukari to stay with a guy after running away from home and ditching school. On top of this, Arashi thinks George is not the kind of guy who can make a woman happy so he warns Yukari not to get too close to George. Yukari seems to be quietly agree with the warning.

The next morning, Miwako comes to bring Yukari some breakfast as well as to offer her a job at a new Happy Berry shop. Caroline is happy to accept it although she wonders a bit if she's cut out for it. Miwako, however, assures Yukari that she will be fine so she encourages her to give her sister a call. Because of this, Yukari comes to Happy Berry in the afternoon to attend her first job interview. Anyway, Miwako's sister, Mikako is surprised when she finds out that 'Caroline' is actually Yukari, an unusually tall Japanese girl. Mikako then gets straight to the point and tells Yukari that the truth is the position has been taken by another person. Nevertheless, she asks Yukari if she has a free time tomorrow. Meanwhile at school, Tokumori is worried about Yukari. But when he asks Yukari's friend, she doesn't have any idea either and thinks that Yukari probably run away with a guy. In fact, it seems she doesn't care much about Yukari.
Back inside Atelier, Yukari informs everyone that even though she doesn't get the sales position, she was offered a job as a model for Zipper magazine by Mikako. Yukari, however, thinks that she was chose because Mikako couldn't find anyone better but the gang tells her to get a grip and some confidence in herself. The next day, Yukari is on her way to the photoshoot when she receives a phone call from Tokumori. Apparently he's worried because Yukari is not at school during test. Yukari, however, tells him that she's not doing the test because she just got a once in a lifetime chance. Nevertheless, she wishes Tokumori the best during the exam. Tokumori, who feels sorry for Yukari, decides to tell Yukari's friend that Yukari can't come because she's sick. The episode then ends with Yukari running confidently towards a waving Mikako as she assures herself that she's going to be okay despite being deserted by her parents and the world.

Impression:
Yukari's last word really strikes a chord with me here. I know how hard it was to start a life for oneself in a big city without any help or support from family members. Yukari is actually quite lucky because she actually has friends who care about her but most people often have to fend for themselves without any help from any kind of friends. I do, however, question her decision to ditch school and get a full-time job. I guess I'm one of the old-fashioned people who think that you need education in order to get ahead in life. Although I supposed the kind of knowledge that one needs in order to become a model can't be obtained from school. Anyway, I'm surprised to see that this episode still has not completed the second volume of the manga. There are only a small amount of material left in the second volume but with only 7 more episodes left, I do wonder if the animators will be able to cover the next 3 volumes of the manga.
For me, the direction of this series is subtle and outstanding. The simple, beautiful shots of the field and the tree make the emotional impact of the scene less obvious but deeper. The flattening of the immediate impact of emotions througout the series is disturbing but intentional: both to convey Yukari's confusion, and because suppressed emotions become stronger in the long run. For me, this series is a great story told in a fascinating way, and is far the most artistic of this fall's series, despite being less popular than glossy junk like Mai-otome. I am comforted by the fact that I know Kobayashi will continue to get work, because he can make real art and tell a real story without spending real money.
I really like Yukari as a main character. At first I thought she's going to be a snotty little girl but she turns out to be quite an interesting person after all. It helps that her voice actor is not some squeaky sounding girl.
Judging from different message boards, i get the impression that if you've seen the manga, you will not like the anime. I'm lucky in the sense that I never got to read the manga so i'm following the story for the first time.
This makes me wonder though if there is a manga reader who actually likes the anime as well?
Hey! I have a question.....I've already read the manga, but I really want to see the anime show. What channel is it on? I live in the U.S just so you know. Thanks alot!
p.s- Paradise Kiss is a really good manga book!! I loved it :)
-thanks again!

Alex, this series is not available in the US. You either have to watch it from Japan or follow it using fansub (http://www.animesuki.com).
I finally managed to catch up with this series. I am actually a fan of Kobayashi's Beck so I don't have too much problem with his style. But I remember how viewers of Beck had similar complaints when the series was on air.
I'm with Hasimime on this--I find the direction outstanding and a perfect complement to the manga. I respect your opinions on anime tremendously Garten but I'm still quite surprised by your complaints about the poor mixture of comedy/drama--I find it perfect. But I know this show has divided fans quite sharply--people either seem to love everything about it or else find the tone completely off.

Oh and I'm a fan of both the anime and manga--Ai Yawaza is prob my fave mainstream current shoujo manga-ka (and one of the few to take the usual subgenres but make them truly fresh and shine)
E
Sorry for all the posts--one more neat comment. Mikako's seiyuu is the same woman who voiced Mikako in the Gonkinjo Monogatari anime back in 1995! I believe Gokinjo was her first anime work--she sang the theme song and ws one of Ai Yazawa's fave singers/idols so Ai asked her to voice the character.

It's not the poor mixture of comedy and drama that I'm complaining about. What I don't like about the anime so far is that when a scene is supposed to be comedic, the animators actually makes it as if there's no comedy involved in it. And when a scene is supposed to be serious, the scene actually loses its emotional impact because the characters go SD. It's like the anime purposedly going against the way the stories are told in the manga.
To give you an example, in the manga, when Yukari tells the other that she's quitting school, everyone looks shocked. It's like they think Yukari has lost her mind. In the anime, forget about the scene being comedic. The other characters simply go "Huh" then the camera panned into a shot of empty field. No reaction shot whatsoever. I mean this is a scene where Yukari makes an important decision in her life and the animators can't even be bothered to at least show a shot of her expression.
I am sorry if I sound harsh about the anime. I actually hate criticising a series that I like a lot. But IMO, the way the anime has treated the design and the storyline is not up to the level of Ai Yazawa's calibre. And I can't write rave reviews about an episode if I don't think the episode deserves one. Having said that, there are some scenes that this episode did quite well such as the end scene where Yukari runs towards Mikako while her voiceover is in the background.
Ah sorry if I came off as catty--I just meant that it surprised me--but I appreciate that your reviews are honest, and it's always of interest to read well written reviews that disagree with your own view just as contrast.
Was dicussing the PV for the OP with a friend who acutally got me into TommyFebruary6 2 years ago--he's a huge fan. He had this to say about the "drunken" part--which helps give it some context for me:
"The lavender and white is the design of the box for the Tf6 Blythe doll (I'm kinda surprised she isn't in the video considering Tommy's penchant for Blythe) - I'm guessing the silly/drunk acting Tommy is meant to be the Tommy Blythe doll coming out of her box, since all her accessories are on the floor - the books, the shoes and the gold bag."
TommyFeb6 has always been her more mischievous and even drunk "persona"--the more ernest guitar pop of TommyHeavenly6 is more a "good girl" in contrast Tomoko has said. Anyway this is getting off topic but there's a good interview with her on the subject and genesis of the TommyFebruyary6 project here:

what's with mikako's hair? Isn't it supposed to be pink like miwako's?
Mikako always dyed her hair in the Gokinjo manga/anime but it was "naturally"--and for the most part--yellow/blond (which she dyed it first in one of the early chapters)

I was disappointed about that quirk where~ when Caroline is speaking to someone, or there is an important discussion~ the camera pans in only on to her eye~ and we hear faintly what the other person is saying, but not their reaction~ it's probably supposed to mean sth deeper abt her personality though.. ignorance? being lost in her own thoughts?
This is the first time ever i read a complaint about Paradise Kiss anime...!
But i think you're right since i always feel a little bit weird yet emptiness every time i watch this series, i don't know if i was too cold or not in the good mood but it didn't move me as much as the manga can!
However, i really enjoy reading your reviews. They were meticulous, subtle and honest. Sincerely, i can tell which i feel good at and which i don't but ask me for explanation, i can't do as well as you do so far. ^^
