Paradise Kiss ep.12

I think this is a rather disappointing ending for the series. Not only they cut out so many important side stories, the climax of the series also does not feel as powerful as the manga. Although by cutting some of the plot points, they do manage to make Arashi far more likeable in comparison to the manga version. I think most of the blame goes towards the fact that the series has to be condensed into 12 episodes. Having said that, I also think that part of the blame goes to Kobayashi's directing style, which I think does not suit this series very well. I really hate the overuse of screen transition images and the fact that he chose to eliminate the majority of the comedic moments that made the original manga a pleasant series. This is actually my first exposure towards his work and I have to say that I'm rather disappointed by it.

The episode begins with George presenting some of his new design sketches to the group. Arashi criticises said design and thinks that George should design more practical clothes. Their little debate, however, is interrupted by Yukari who tells them that she has to leave because she has a photoshoot. She, however, is surprised to know that George also has a photoshoot session. As it turns out, the two have been contracted to do the photoshoot together. Later on Yukari complains to Hiro that she's a bit pissed off that George can become a model so easily while she has to struggle her way through. While the two converse, two of Yukari's other classmates arrive. One of the classmates is clearly jealous when Yukari admits that the boy in the photo is her boyfriend. The girl tells Hiro that he must be disappointed about this. Yukari, however, seems oblivious to this and doesn't believe that Hiro actually likes her.

A few days later, Yukari gets to celebrate Christmas with the others inside Atelier and then goes to George's place afterwards. When the two are in bed, however, George's doorbell rings and upon opening the door, they find out that the guest is none other than Kaori. Yukari becomes jealous upon seeing Kaori and acts rather possessive towards George. George, however, quickly reprimands her and invites Kaori to come in. What follows is then a very uncomfortable moment as Yukari feels ignored by George and Kaori as the two talk about George's career as a designer. Apparently George doesn't plan on becoming a designer to make a living. This surprises Yukari because she doesn't know about it until now. George claims that they had Christmas party before so he didn't want to ruin everyone's festive mood. Yukari, however, feels slighted because Kaori obviously already knows about this. Meanwhile George tells his girls that he intends on becoming Seiji's make up apprentice.

Kaori vehemently opposes the idea while Yukari can only quietly asks herself why George never talked to her about this. After Kaori left, things don't get better for Yukari because George rudely throws her coat at her and tells her she's better off going home. He then goes on about how he told her that Kaori is an important friend and that she is not 'that kind' of a woman. Meanwhile, Miwako is seen in the middle of sending "Merry Christmas" greeting to Hiro using her mobile. After Miwako goes to sleep, however, Arashi goes through her phone and becomes upset upon finding out Hiro's message. The two then have a fight which ends in Arashi throwing Miwako's mobile into the wall, effectively destroying it. A couple of days later, Hamada-sensei catches George trying to throw away his own design sketches because he feels that no one else is going to wear the design anyway. Upon hearing this, Hamada remembers the conversation she had with Seiji.

Seiji believes that George won't make it in the real world as fashion designer. He thinks that George makes clothes as a way to escape the harsh life of reality. Hamada, however, seems to disagree with this and eventually tells George that casual wear designers are not the only clothing designers around. Meanwhile, Arashi finally finds out that Miwako had to buy a new mobile because he destroyed her old one the other day. He offers to pay for her but Miwako refuses and tells him that it was her mistake for messaging Hiro. Their conversation, however, is interrupted by George's arrival who tells the two that he managed to sell one of Paradise Kiss' dress. A few days later, George gets to meet his father who tells his son that Kaori came to asks him to support George's mother so George can use his money to study abroad. Kaori eventually leaves Tokyo after giving some advice to George to be a better person.

On a new year's eve, Miwako is surprised to find Hiro sitting inside Arashi's room. Hiro tells Miwako that personally he'd prefer to go to the temple only with Miwako but Arashi insists on coming. In the end, the three end up going together and get to meet George, Yukari, and Isabella. After leaving the temple, George tells Yukari that he's going to Paris after graduation. He thinks he's going to be sad without her so he asks her if she wants to come with him. Thankfully Yukari rejects his offer and tells him that she can't possibly leave her career behind so the two agree to part ways. A few days later, the gang decides to hold farewell party with George. After this, the gang go on their seperate way but George apparently leaves Yukari his entire design wardrobe. Fast forward to 10 years later, Yukari is about to get married to someone and also gets an invitation from George to attend a broadway play where he designs the costume.

Impression:

I think my main problem with this episode, apart from the fact that it's been butchered to oblivion, is that I don't care about George's future fate. As far as I'm concerned, he can become a sweatshop worker or drown in the pacific ocean and I wouldn't even care. I feel that his character is too unsympathetic for me that I fail to care about his problem. I do, however, feel sorry for Yukari, especially when she was ignored by George, who keeps talking with Kaori about his non-existant future. I did, however, like the addition of the tears in George's eye as he left Yukari for good. I don't recall seeing that in the manga so I guess it's an attempt by the animators to make his character more sympathetic. Unfortunately it's a bit too late for me because by then I already dislike his character. This is why I'm glad that the anime still follows the manga quite closely as far as the ending goes. That means having the two main characters go on their seperate ways.

I think George and Yukari going on their seperate ways is the best ending I can see for the two of them. I realise that some people actually like the pairing but I think that their pairing is a one way street towards trainwreckville. I agree that they've brought out some good qualities out of each other when they first met. But things have gone downhill ever since. George treats Yukari like he treats some kind of a doll while Yukari often becomes volatile towards him in reaction. If they had stay together, I think they'd be far more miserable than they already are right now. This is why I wish the anime had shown at the end that Yukari's new fiancee is actually Hiro and not George. I understand that they want to keep the hope alive for George and Yukari fans but I feel that the manga was good because the ending shows these two's eventual seperation. In the end, I can't help but feeling disappointed towards this series. I had some expectations towards it but they were mostly unfulfilled.

I don't exactly remember everything but here are things that didn't make it into the anime:

spoiler starts:

1. Yukari's conversation with her mother and the insurance seller was omitted.

2. The anime does not include Arashi and Hiro's discussion in the park and consequently, Arashi's past wrongdoing against Miwako was not brought up at all.

3. Hiro was not shown as Yukari's fiancee in the ending.

4. Several scenes such as the temple one, was cut short.

5. Yukari's monologue about her life after George was not included.

There are actually more but I can't remember them right now. So if anyone else can add to this list, feel free to do so.

I absolutely found George's character repulsive during that scene when he rudely ignored Yukari and just kept talking to Kaori. I would've definitely left at that point instead of sitting there and fuming silently. I really wanted George's character to improve, but unfortunately he just got worse and worse as the story progressed. That's too bad, because he was such a yummy character at the beginning.

Did the anime even include Isabella leaving with George in the ship, or was that scene left out as well?

December 31, 2005 | Garten wrote:

Kawaii, the anime did include the Isabella leaving with George on the ship. So that remains intact. Your question, however, reminds me that another favourite scene of mine got cut out from the anime. The scene in question is the 'Daisuke Yamamoto' one. I really like that scene and it's a shame that the anime writers chose to leave it out.

I think the ending for Paradise Kiss was really a very long process that spanned the entirety of volume five. I suppose the producers didn't think that the whole volume had enough impact, so they chose the very pretty scene of Yukari in the dress for episode eleven, and this is more of an epilogue (volume five was like a very long epilogue).

I remember thinking that George was a jerk to Yukari, and that Yukari was a bit forceful and jealous with George. It was painful to watch them interact, and the split at the end relieved me.

12 episodes was too short. I'm disapointed too.

George is simply not the 'marriage' material kind of guy to begin with, and sticking to him, it's a love-hate relationship (like shown in his mum and dad's case...and when that comes, Yukari will be even seem more pitiful). Ultimately, what a woman wants is security and emotional stability, and this is what the author herself has probably thought of too. In fact, I'm not surprised that the ending was written in such a way - Hiro and Yukari being together. I feel Hiro understands Yukari even more than George, so he's a more suitable one for her.

I was truely disappointed... I will admit that I never read the manga, i had intention of doing so but it was never in at any of the bookstores in my city.. I guess it either sold out alot or they stopped carrying it.

but even not having read the manga, I felt there were many things missing, many thing unexplained and I personally wasn't satisfied with the ending. Since I haven't read the manga I had a gentler opinion on George, and I kinda favored the GeorgexCarrie paring. I was really disappointed when I found out it wasn't him.

I see your point though, I (with my optimistic attitude) would think it would work out, but int he end it probably wouldn't and it'd end really badly, at least it ended on better terms than to let it drive out and hurt them more in the end. I don't know... I just didn't like Hiro that much... >.> I personally thought he was bothersome, but I know why and I'm not ignorant of it either. I don't know.. i guess I just grew attached to the GxC paring and instantly disliked him seeing him as a threat to their relationship *shrug*

But they both have their good and bad qualities... I cant' Hate george, I may have disliked things he had done, but I don't hate him. Hiro truely in the end was the best choice for her, and it would be better for her in the long run. They'd be happier together because they got along better.

*sigh* at least I got to say what was on my mind.. *mumble* I want more story... it didn't feel complete! ;_; gah... Parakiss PART 2! i don't understand why everyone seem to dislike george so much. And I think he loved yukari, he just had issues about how to let her how considering his background and everything and in the end their paths were going in different wayd. Also the reason he comes off as jerk most of the time is because the story is in Yukari's point of view and she tends to tell the story that make George look like a jerk because she was new at having a relationship (jealousy, mistrust, misinterpretations etc...)
so don't all gang up on George.

The last episode should have been 2 episodes--it would have made me feel better.

SPOILERS

To the complaint that Hiro wasn't shown, that's a cop-out on the part of the reviewer--They used Hiro's voice in the background. She said "Dear' and asked him questions. You KNEW it was him. And they juxtoposed it so it was true. Japanese aren't fans of being bluggenoned on the head repeatedly with a point, unlike British, American, and Canadian viewers. Having his voice talking to her in a way that only he could isn't enough? Yes, be nice to see him, but money constraints.

Considering the budget for this show, it would have either been 30 episodes of bad animation, or 12 episodes of good animation. I'm sure people would have found reasons to complain either way. People always do. (Neighborhood Story was lots of episodes of bad animation, but the story was really good.)

Japanese don't have 600,000 dollars for such projects. Think more along the line of half that. Make your choice before buying and downloading anime--detailed story, down to the letter and everything perfect with crappy animation, or good animation, shortened and abridged story. Want both? Find out about the project before hand and donate, oh say 500,000 dollars to the project. (Sarcasm)

I once was at a table with a bunch of animators. They were guys from Gonzo. when they heard the money and the staff numbers in the US, their eyes grew big. I could just see them thinking what THEY could do with such money, and how much of a waste that Americans make, but in Japan, they aren't given such large budgets--anime, and animation is a subculture that isn't celebrated too well. While a VA here makes tons of money, a VA there doesn't.

George, I understood through the anime, and I saw his predictiment. It wasn't overstated, but with one more episode it could have played out well. His designs weren't marketable. He couldn't follow his dream, and Yukari, after being pushed towards her dreams by him, felt horrible.

And yes, Isabelle left with George. The Miwako arc kinda died though.

This anime wasn't one of those out spoken anime. It was quiet, and bits and pieces were understated. The points that were made fit with the feeling of the manga. Japanese aren't big on the whole sweeping epic. They like the quiet moments, and to try to make statements in the more simple things. This anime tried to follow that tradition--in many ways I felt it was much like Japanese Caligraphy, enough ink and stroke to make a mark, and enough control to create a smooth flow. If they were given enough money for a 13th or even 14th episode, then it would have felt more complete. (They ran out of ink)

I would say 1 or 2 more episodes, if they had the budget, and they would have rounded it out nicely.

I would rather have it be like Gokinjo Monogatari's animation style and include *everything* from the manga, rather than having it the way it was with 'good art.' whatever... they didn't even work that hard on the shadows, and got ultra lazy by trying not to switch scenes as much. (By 'scenes', I mean, not necessarily, 'a different place', but showing the characters from different angles, far away shots, etcetc., instead of focusing on one character's face realllllllyyyy close up, or even worse, a food item XD... while they talked.) *Ahem*... if you've read the manga, hopefully, you'll know what I'm talking about. You can tell by how the 12th ep ended that Yukari is still very much in love with George, but she knows u can't turn a pimp into a husband. Hiro-kun I think is the safe choice, but I do feel that her heart will always belong to George, which is to too bad for him. I wish the series was longer, but that being said I do feel satisfied with the ending. I kind of wish there would be a sequel where Yukari and George meet up again in New York, and then Yukari is confused, yada yada yada, a whole lot of drama and romance. To conclude, I thought the story and artwork was great. I'm a male and I normally watch a lot of fighting anime, that being said I do love the drama and romance anime and this hit the spot. :-)

I feel like suffocating. First, I thought I felt bad because they didn't end up together. But nah, it wasn't that. I felt bad from the moment Kaori appeared and George totally acted like Yukari is not there while they're having this convo about George's career and Carrie doesn't know anything about it at all! After I finished and rewound episode 12 just to make sure I didnt miss anything, I dled the volume 5 of manga immediately read the latter parts. Their conversation on New Year's day...how he always treated her a doll to dress up...yada, yada...so they can't be together just how the reviewer explained they'll just destroy each other, I finally got that ,,,now I understand(whew, I think my burden is getting lighter as I keep typing)...As I read the vol5 of manga furthermore, I noticed the dramatic moments and the scenes that hurt me most in the anime turns out comical in the manga. Sometimes I feel touched of George's affection for Carrie, but he flips out suddenly, and confuse the heck out of me. I still feel horrible, but it was a good story. I thought Carrie was a stupid character at first, just like a young girl with foolish dreams...but later on, I began to admire her. I'm really impressed with the characterization, but I still feel somethings are left out...probably because they squeezed 5 vols in 12 eps.

Should I read the manga? Maybe I should...maybe I should read Nana too. I just learned today that it was the same writer.

I'm glad George/Yukari split up. I honestly wasn't expecting that, but in the end, this story wasn't about who Yukari got with at the end, but persuing her own dreams. George was just a stepping stone to that.

I'm currenly watching subs of the first 4 Gojikin (SP) Monogatari. Miwako could learn a few things about standing up for herself from her big sis. I'm noticing this theme of submissiveness in Ai Yazawa's works.

It's not a series I'll watch again any time soon, but it was fun for what it was.

I was abit disappointed with the outcome.. kinda hoping George and Yukari could end up together. As much as George was some1 tat wont make woman happy, he does loves Yukari. He juz wan her to be able to make her own decisions and stand up for herself. Overall I simply loves this anime and its been ranked into my top 3 list!!

i was rather disappointed as well by the ending. tho i kinda sorta like george, i way definitely prefer yukari to be with hiro, but alas they didn't show yukari with hiro at the end.. really upsetting =(

i cried really hard at the ending (especially 'lonely in gorgeous' was played), nevertheless. if i was yukari i'd feel majorly depressed and heartbroken. but i agree, things would be worse if she ended up with george anyway. =/

meh. i tend to overempathise & get overemo with the things i watch/read. like in jdramas and even manga o_0. heheh =)

I never actually read the manga... never even watched anime before. But three days ago I was on veoh.com and I searched Barlow Girl which is one of my favorite bands and came across a video of Paradise Kiss with one of their songs with it and so I searched Paradise Kiss and yesterday and today watched all twelve episodes in order. Now I wish I would have never had because I just finished watching episode twelve about an hour ago and I'm so disappointed in the ending... I even cried for like ten minutes afterwards. I don't know if anyone else did but I kind of fell in love with Goerge... It might be a bit strange but I thought he was quite gorgeous for a anime character... I still have this wierd feeling... I can't explain it... like i feel like something is in my throat blocking me from being able to breath even though I'm breathing perfectly fine... I just want to cry and never stop crying because of that completely stupid ending! I'm so sad it ended that way. Why couldn't they have made Goerge a bit ugly and less likeable? And made Hero a bit more hansom? I don't know why I'm getting all upset over this but I'm extremely disappointed. Does anyone else feel the way I do?

Honestly, I think they tried to make George too soft......He's not suppose to be! It lacks the emotional impact of the manga. In the manga, parts where you feel what George feels is very very rare (2-3 instances) but that shows that there are things deep underneath that one way or another Yukari couldn't penetrate.

Likewise, George couldn't penetrate Yukari's feelings either. They were selfish and didn't do what they should've done at the right moments. So it ended. I don't think they got that across. That at the end, really, George and Yukari both loved each other, and they changed somewhat through each other, but their relationship ended because of their own faults. George treated Yukari as a doll and Yukari was too rash and needy, never thinking George might have needs as well. And yes, George does love Yukari. He left her the entire wardrobe--his heart and soul. Partly because he wanted a fresh start, partly saying he really meant it when he said they were special, so he wanted her to wear them.

By changing George, it loses the impact and the beauty of the story. He and Yukari's relationship was the heart of it. He's not SUPPOSE to be likable. He's suppose to be forbidden, stand-offish, a jerk, ect. Yukari was attracted to him by his looks and his charisma (another reason why their relationship didn't work).

It's just a shame they were too selfish. They had nada communications, nothing beneath attraction and passion. When Yukari learned how lonely George was, it was too late. The damage was done. When George finally looked at Yukari correctly, she had become a woman with free will like he wanted, only that woman now no longer wants to stay with him. If Yukari went with George, he would've tired of her anyway (because she wouldn't have any will).

Yeah, I love George. He's romantic, but a jerk. But he has a lot beneath him, (though I think the impact was lost by the stupid changes and director not fitting with the story) and he did change. He cared for Yukari enough to leave his wardrobe, and she was probably his first love too...Otherwise, he wouldn't have sent her tickets, would he?

Thanks to Garten for posting this review as I didn`t able to watch the last epic & was feeling very tensed that what`ll happen. The ending is not good at all. Yukari, who was so mad about George, refused him in the end! Looks like she became more matured than before. They could show Hiro as Yukari`s fiancee!

I fell in love with George a bit as well, haha. I'm reading the manga (I don't have book 5 but just read the first 4). I don't want to read the last one, it will be too disappointing considering George and Yukari do not end up together. George was just so sexy!

You can't assume that Yukari fell for George due to his looks and charisma , It wasn't stated in the anime or the manga .. By the way you can't say that women are shallow , men can be shallow too , but never mind that . There is no one in the world who is absolutely flawless or perfect . Yes , you may think that George may be a jerk and not concerned about her feelings , but you are wrong , as George truely loved her , And love is all that matters , it's better to live an indecisive live but happy with a man you love , rather than live a miserable live and pretend to be happy with a man you don't love . So i was kinda disappointed to know that Yukari ended up with Hiro .. Not to mention after watching the scene whereby George left all his entire wardrobe to her .. I felt kinda sad but not to the extent of crying , but i can understand why some of you did . This kind of things seem to be unrealistic , but i can actually happen in real life . All in all , this is the best anime i have evr watched so far , and i feel sorry for those who think otherwise . Please do not feel offended by my comment , i am just speaking my mind . And for those who agree with me , :)
