This is definitely one of the funniest episodes so far. I've mentioned before how Ouran seems to be a lot better when the series is focused on Haruhi and the group instead of some random characters of the week. This episode is a good example of this. Instead of giving too much focus on the guest characters, the writers simply use them to mine the comic reactions out of the Host club. It also helps that the guest characters of the week are so serious that they provide a good contrast to the silly characters from Ouran. Animation-wise, this is pretty much the same quality as last week's episode so that means the animators are pretty good at maintaining the consistency. As a side note, if you didn't read last week's NANA's discussion, flchick pointed out a PDF document from Nippon TV that lists Ouran as 26 episodes series while NANA has been given around 50 episodes (tentative).

The episode opens with a classic music accompanied by three female figures dancing their way across the now opened Ouran gate. Inside the class, Haruhi finds out from her classmates that they have no afternoon class because today and tomorrow Ouran High is holding an event that allows students from other schools to come and visit the schools' clubs. At the same time, the twins are shocked to know that they have no drinks for their visitors and they think as a manager, Renge should arrange this. Renge, however, suggests that they should just give the visitors instant coffee. Because of this, Hikaru and Kaoru ask Haruhi to buy it since she's the only one knows where to buy it and she has no customer at the moment. So after buttering her up by giving her some hair and foot treatment, they dump her out of the clubroom with the order to buy the instant coffee. Haruhi is annoyed about this but is quickly distracted when two girls thank her for making the twins happy.

Haruhi doesn't understand what they meant by this so they tell her that they've been in the same class with the twins since middle school but they've never been interested in other people. However, since they joined the Host Club, they slowly talk a little bit and Haruhi's arrival makes them even more sociable to their classmates than before. While remembering the girls' words on her way from picking a bag of instant coffee, Haruhi slips on a banana skin thrown by a monkey that comes out of nowhere and falls into the arms of another girl. The girl, however, quickly notices that Haruhi is actually a girl and not a guy. Inside the school, 2 girls make their way into the Host Club and are instantly greeted by the guys, who now dress up like knights in shining armour. Tamaki immediately launches into this over the top speech by claiming that even if the world was to end, from today he'll protect them with his own life. The girls, however, are not impressed and begin to criticise him.

One of them thinks that Tamaki's vow is a rather selfish and asks Tamaki what the woman left behind would feel. The other girl then chimes in by saying that it can't be helped that men are lowly creatures who always consider their own pride first and foremost even when they can barely protect themselves. Upon hearing this, Tamaki wonders what sort of words should one say to a woman. All of a sudden, the girl who caught Haruhi in her arms appear and tells him that she'll ask the girl to fight together and promise to never leave her side forever. The girl then seals the deal by kissing Haruhi's arm causing the other two girls to follow suit. Tamaki is, of course, horrified that someone else touching Haruhi but before he can get to Haruhi, one of the girls already give him an uppercut. Kyoya immediately recognises the girls' uniform as St.Lobelia High School's so the girls decide to introduce themselves as Amakusa Benio, Maihara Chizuru, and Tsuwabuki Hinako.

The three of them are a part of the Shirayuri (White Lily - but the name is also a pun on the word 'Yuri'), or usually known as the Zuka Club. The guys, who realise that the name of 'Zuka' is derived from Takarazuka, an all female theatre troupe, become shock to see the girls' presentation. After a while, however, Tamaki is passed out while the twins laugh like there's no tomorrow. Their laugh is then interrupted by Renge, who comes out of the floor carrying a cup of Hescafe. She, however, immediately spits the coffee back after tasting it. Although to preserve a good taste, the scene has been censored with a shot of the Hescafe logo. She then proceeds to explain how St.Lobelia's Zuka Club considers female to be superior. It has a 30 years history of being run by women for women. Zuka's club activities include tea ceremony, debates about the meaning of being a woman, and theatrical performance. However, since there is no man in the school, Renge is not interested.

After Renge disappears again, the Lobelia girls proceed to make comment about how they don't like men and consider women to women relationship to be superior. The guys, of course, don't give a hoot about this and the twins demonstrate this by busy playing Nintendo DS. The girls then accuse the Host Club of playing with girls' heart with their pretend love. Benio thinks this is happening because Tamaki is half-blood and because the club wants to gain profit out of it. In her anger, she threatens to close the Host Club. Kyoya tells them that he understands what they're trying to say but asks them to wait because their President, Tamaki is sleeping. Tamaki, however, immediately wakes up when the girls try to ask Haruhi to have tea together with them. He points out what could possibly come out of girl on girl love especially since God created Adam and Eve. But before Tamaki can reach Haruhi, he slips on a banana skin and ends up dipping his finger in hot coffee.

Haruhi, who feels sorry for the guy, ends up bandaging him. Tamaki wonders if Haruhi always carry bandages with her but she tells him that the bandages are just gifts from the store where she bought the instant coffee. Their conversation, however, is interrupted by the Lobelia girls, who tell the guys that this place is not suitable for Haruhi so they'll try to transfer her into Lobelia and the Zuka Club. Haruhi tries to do some damage control by saying that she doesn't think that Tamaki is half-blood but Hunny corrects her that Tamaki is actually half French, half Japanese. She then tries to say that the Host Club doesn't really have a short history but the twins tell her that it's actually was founded after Tamaki came to the school. The think that ticked Haruhi the most, however, is when she finds out that the Club really does make profit by auctioning some of the items that the members have used. For example, Kyoya has just auctioned off Haruhi's 'unused' pencil for 30000 Yen.

Kyoya, however, points out that the money is to run the event, purchase the costume, et all. Despite this, Haruhi is still angry because the Club took her pencil and sold it online without her permission. Tamaki attempts to apologise by giving Haruhi his Bear-pencil but she's not interested. The Zuka Club thinks that they should come back tomorrow for Haruhi's decision. After the girls left, Haruhi also leave in anger. This causes everyone in the club to become worried. Hikaru wonders if they just sold a pencil that was probably given by Haruhi's mother but Kaoru thinks that it was just a pencil from an electronic store. Tamaki wonders if Haruhi would be better going to Zuka Club. The other guys, however, don't want it to happen. Having said that, the twins point out that since Haruhi is clever, she won't have trouble passing Lobelia's entrance exam. Kyoya also knows that Lobelia will probably paid off her debts. Seeing everyone panicking, Tamaki decides to calm them off by saying that he has a plan.

The next day, the Zuka girls are surprised when they see everyone in the Host Club except Mori dressing up as girls. Benio accuses Tamaki of mocking the girls, but Tamaki denies it and claims that this is an 'Omake' to show Haruhi the advantage of staying at the Host Club. He then points out by staying put, Haruhi would be able to have 'brothers' and 'sisters' and therefore, experiences the Zuka Club and the Host Club at the same time. Haruhi can't help herself from laughing upon seeing the silly costumes everyone is wearing but is touched when Hikaru tells her that the reason they're doing it is because they want to be in the Host Club together with Haruhi. Because of this, Haruhi tells the Lobelia girls that she thinks their way of life is interesting but she has her own goal and that is why she went to Ouran. Haruhi actually had no intention to quit although she did got angry at the guys for auctioning off her pencil. The Lobelia girls decide to leave for now but decide to crush the Host Club one day.

Impression:

No matter how many times I've seen this episode, it's hard not to laugh when the Host club appears as girls. This brings back the memory of that Fushigi Yuugi Omake where all of the guys have to dress up as girls in order to enter girls-only onsen. Everyone looks okay but Mitsukake, who's way too butch to be a woman. This episode also reminds me that there are some students who actually go to a single-sex school as opposed to co-ed one. There was actually a time when my parents wanted me to go to this prestigious high school which happens to be all male but I didn't get in because I am bad at math and the entrance test of course had to involve math. Even when I went to college, I always got a co-ed dorm so I can't help but wonder how different school life would be for those who go/went to single-sex school. Is there a benefit of going to a school meant for only one specific gender? Does competition tend to be more apparent in such school? Would you go to one if the school is good?

It's amusing, however, to know that the guys think Haruhi will want to be in another club. If Haruhi has her way, I think she'd prefer to stay away from any club and spend her time studying all on her own. Still, it was funny to see everyone squirm in fear of Haruhi's wrath. Hikaru and Kaoru laughing too much to the point that tears came out of their eyes was also a comedy gold. And then there is Renge and her involvement in the entire storyline. Her spitting out Hescafe while being censored by the brand was priceless. I also can't help but laughing outloud when she said she didn't care to go to Roberia because there's no man in it. There's also a continual joke in the form of a monkey dropping a banana skin, which causes some characters to slip. Also don't miss out the Oh! Laan! Auction (a skid on Yahoo! Japan! Auction site) and Pineapple computer (a skid on Apple computer) shots. There's even a DS game reference in the episode. It makes me wonder if these brand names are actually sponsors of the series.

I've forgotten how it was to be in a co-ed classroom. o_o

But anyway...

I'm a little sad to see that the cross-dressing isn't as convincing as it was in the manga. Part of what made it funny is how well the Host Club manages to pull it off, yet still seem like silly boys.

Really? I always heard about sexual orientation due to conditioning (ie. living on same sex campus) but I never really believe it. I supposed there's always some exceptions.

Oh, and the episode looks *gorgeous*. So pretty. And I really like the uniforms from Lobelia ^^; so preferable to Ouran's yellow puffballs..

Amethyst, I definitely think there are exceptions.. but for instance, my friend's girlfriend attends a women's college in Oakland, where the unofficial motto is apparently "bi until proven lesbian". Yeah, there are straight people there... but apparently not in any majority.

As for same-sex school, I once went to a high school like that. I think the advantages of going to such school is that you can concentrate better on your study since there are no boys (in my case) to distract you. But people still argue to this day if there it's actually true or not. I think it depends on the boys/girls themselves.

Let's hope they can :D I think if BONES plan the budget properly, they should be able to do it.

Well, the manga is already up to volume 16 or 17, IIRC. 50 episodes should be easy to achieve.

answer to berubara: that's the nickname for Riyoko Ikeda's master piece shoujo manga, The Rose of Versailles that center around the adventures and misadventures of a young noble woman raised as a man who would rise to ranks of captain of the royal guard and become involve in the many intrigues surrounding the French pre and post revoluntionary court. It's supposedly the archeotype for many crossdressing shoujo manga (i.e Shoujo Kakumei Utena)

Well, it's obviously not only in single-sex schools that there are female x female relationships. I go to a co-ed school where there are more bisexual/lesbian girls than you would think at first sight.

> "my friend's girlfriend attends a women's college in Oakland, where the unofficial motto is apparently "bi until proven lesbian"."

I'm not saying that anyone here is stereotyping, but I know a lot of people who - just because I happen to be bisexual myself - always think that I have crushes on mostly girls. Just because a girl is bi, doesn't mean she only likes girls, but some people just automatically assume something like that. I, for one, may notice a girl in a different way than a straight female would, but I still tend to lean more towards liking guys. I guess it's because my bisexuality wasn't entirely noticeable until I got into junior high/high school. Lastly, it's usually not completely obvious if a person isn't straight, lol.

Anyway, I really love this episode. It's soooo funny! The guys look halarious (not to mention.. quiet hideous, haha) as girls. And I totally love Benio! She's great! XD I agree with Bunnyboo - Mori DOES look handsome! All the Host Club guys always do! And of course, Renge - Her and her Hescafe! LOL.

Thank heavens that Ouran will be running for 26 eps hopefully Yahoo, Nintendo, and Apple will bank roll this operation. I have great faith that BONES can plan a budget better than Gainax.

In regards to the issue of lesbianism and bisexuals developing in same gender schools I think that it is purely irrelevant what your sexuality is. The important thing is to be honest with oneself, as all respect begins with self respect. Besides I couldn't care less who your attracted to, I judge a person by how high they can bounce when they hit bottom.

June 1, 2006 | Kylara wrote:

Nope, Kagei, I hope I wasn't coming off as stereotyping. When my friend's gf said that to me, my response was something along the lines of, "Are you SURE?" and "how can you be absolutely positive?"

But in any case, I don't think anyone - female or male - that's bi has a preference, one way or another. In fact, the people I met at that college, if they were bi, were actually more voracious for men then most straight girls I've met.. less around. Whatever works, IMO.

Btw, I am THRILLED to hear that this is 26. :D

Because I saw Renge is wearing a kind of kimono that is usually worn by female student in that manga. If I'm not mistaken, the kimono is called 'hakama' . Also manga Haikara-san ga tooru is about feminist that suits the theme of this Ouran episode.

I absolutely LOVED this episode. The twins sound horrible as girls, but Kyouya's "mom" voice was pretty darn good. Mori was handsome (as usual), and the whole crossdressing scene had me laughing for minutes. :D

Yes, I went to an all girls school when I was 13. It's a pretty good school. I didn't want to at first but I got accepted. But surprisingly, I really enjoyed my 4 years there. The bonding was great. (Of course, no catfights from competing for boys, etc)
Maybe the difference is girls from an all-girls school are more independent and less reliant on guys, coz we have to do things ourselves. We used to think girls from a co-ed school were always attempting to be too feeble so that they can rely on guys. Haha..but anywayz, as time goes by, I think the gap closes.
Still a lot of them have boyfriends and stuff (also, a lot without). There were crushes, yes. But lesbians? Maybe a few. In my year, there was only 1 girl that reeeeally looked like a guy. Also, the crushes were more similar to little girls liking female idols. I don't think there is any sexual connotation behind these crushes.

^Spoiler on ep.10^

Also, also, isn't weird how Tamaki is the "father" of Hahuri and here, he wears female clothing, and later, Haruhi's real dad is a cross-dresser. In ep.10, it's funny how Tamaki talked the same way as Haruhi's real dad when he got discovered by Haruhi in the "Commoner Super!"

....I can't believe there was a Nazi reference with the girls! Then again, it's in Japan, not America, but it cracked me up [along with the rest of the ep].
