This is definitely one of the funniest episode I've seen in a while. The jokes are funny, especially the bits with Nekozawa and the part where the twins start having fights with each other. The animation quality also continues to be top-notch with some fast one happening in some of the scenes. Plot-wise, the series finally starts to give focus on other characters apart from Tamaki and Haruhi. This time around, it's focused on the twins. I am just hoping that as the series progress, other characters will get the same spotlight. I especially want to see some development on Mori, who has not get any important dialogue or scenes whatsoever so far. I hope the series will get at least 26 episodes so that it'll get to the point where Mori gets his share of the story.

A flashback to the twins' childhood reveals that at one point a girl ask to play with them but they only agree to do so if she can figure out which one of them is Hikaru. The same thing still happens in the present time much to the excitement of their client. In the middle of the game, however, Tamaki barges in and angrily tells them that he's not happy with what happen to the host club's website. It appears the twins have placed Haruhi's half nekkid photo in it. Tamaki immediately assumes that the twins coerced Haruhi to be photographed that way using her favourite food, Ootoro. But as it turns out, they simply did photo manipulation and join Haruhi's head to Tamaki's shirtless body. Upon finding out about this, Tamaki wants them to manipulate her picture and placed it on a female body. The twins suggest that they should just dress up Haruhi in female's clothes. Haruhi becomes angry because of this and ends up asking the twins what they think of her.
When they say that she's just a toy, a strange man appears on the door claiming that if they want toys, they should come to his club, the Black Magic club. Kyoya explains that the guy is someone called Nekozawa and he hates bright light. Tamaki then tells a story when one day he accidentally steps on Nekozawa's favourite doll called Bereznoff. That day he experienced weird things such as his exam turning into unintelligible writing and his classmates turn into complete strangers. Kyoya reveals that Tamaki simply went to the wrong class examination. Suddenly Nekozawa creeps in between the two and tells them that Bereznoff's power is real and that it can be used to curse someone that a person hates. The twins decide to play a trick on Nekozawa and flashes a bright light on him since he hates bright light and that promptly sends Nekozawa running away screaming. The twins are then bored and decide to ask Haruhi if they can come to her house next holiday.
Haruhi rejects the request flatout but the twins are not giving up and decide to play the "Which one is Hikaru" game with her if she guesses wrong, she must allow them to come to her house. Haruhi, however, correctly guesses that the twin on the right is Hikaru. The twin try to lie about it but Haruhi tells them that they may look a like but she can tell them easily. The fangirls are impressed to see Haruhi able to distinguish the twins and ask her how she knows which one is which. Haruhi innocently and without malice tells them that Hikaru is a bit badder than Kaoru. This invites a chuckle from Kaoru, pissing Hikaru off in the process. Hikaru says outloud that the one with cruel intention is usually Kaoru, making the other twin angrier. The two then start verbal slinging at each other and in the process, Kaoru reveals that Hikaru really is interested in Haruhi, shocking poor Tamaki in the process. Renge, on the other hand, is quite happy to watch the supposed love square.
The next day, Hikaru decides to color his hair into pink so that he wouldn't be mistaken as Kaoru, who has now decide to color his hair a shade of blue. The twins, however, continue their fight and freak everyone out in the process. During lunch time, they try to order different food menu from the other but finds out that their choice in food is always similar no matter how they try to think differently. Hunny tries to stop them from fighting by offering his cake but only make things worse because he's annoying. Meanwhile, Tamaki's imagination is in full drive when he finds out that Haruhi brings her own bento box for lunch. He immediately imagines her as a housewive who makes him boxed lunch. Because Hikaru can't stand having the same meal as Kaoru, he decides to switch food with Haruhi and eats her bento instead. Much to her surprise, Haruhi finds out that she does enjoy the expensive food that Hikaru gave her. Tamaki becomes happy to see this.
Not wanting to be outdone, Kaoru decides to spoonfed Haruhi but before he can do this, Hikaru ends up eating the food he was going to offer to Haruhi. In his anger, Kaoru throws a pudding into Hikaru's face but ends up hitting Tamaki instead, who's been used by Hikaru as a shield. The twins then continued their object throwing fight at each other while Haruhi tries to evacuate to safety. That day, the host club discuss the toll of the twins' fight. Kyoya assures Haruhi that he's not going to blame her for what happened to the twins despite what she said earlier. Hunny believes that this is the first time he's seen the two fighting. Tamaki then tells the other how back in middle high, the twins have always been with no one but each other. Upon hearing this, Haruhi wonders if the two can't make up because this is their first fight and they don't know how. She, however, is eventually fed up with the twins fighting, especially when Kaoru is about to use a voodoo doll on Hikaru.
Haruhi ends up telling them that unless they stop fighting, they're not invited to her house. Upon hearing this, the twins reveal that the fights had been a ploy to get Haruhi to invite them to her house.
They start re-enacting the twincest play and tell each other how sorry they are despite the fact that everything was a play. They then inform the others that they did this because they were bored. Upon finding out about this, Tamaki thinks the twins are demons. The next day, things return to normal and the twins go back to play their usual "Guess which one of us is Hikaru". The fangirls think that the one with the Pink hair is Hikaru but Haruhi notices that the twins have switched hair color. Hikaru is now sporting Blue hair while Kaoru now has Pink-colored hair. The twins realise that before this, their world is seperated from everyone else's. But now they realise that someone has make her way into their world.
Impression:
First of all, I have to say that I love Nekozawa. His presence lends some fine moments to this episode. The part where he tries to convince Tamaki about Bereznoff's cursing power was a comedy gold. It doesn't help that Tamaki can be such an airhead sometimes. It's hard to believe he actually thought he was cursed by Nekozawa instead of going to the wrong class. The best part about this joke, however, is when the twins shine bright light on Nekozawa. The result was that the light freaks Nekozawa, who in turns freaks Tamaki. I also love the Haruhi agreed to be photograph for some Ootoro joke. It's highly unlikely in my opinion so the fact that this is the first assumption that Tamaki came up with is hilarious. I was amused to see Mori and Hunny being thrown around from one end of the table to the next. I think this is one of those scenes which can only be seen in either anime or manga since the scene will look ridiculous if it was done in a live action drama.
Although I love the Otoro joke that BONES came up with me thinks its very un-shojo and I wonder if they're pandering to the male demographic that watches this show. Not that I mind of course.
I do hope they do more with Mori though if they follow the Manga chapeters realtively faithfully then we'll have Mori development.
Hooray for Nekozawa and this means we're going to have a beach episode! I can't wait to see how they render Nekozawa's private estate. Haruhi tasting the rich people's food was priceless. Hopefully we'll see Haruhi's dad since all that planning to visit Haruhi in her natural habitat will go to waste.
After next week's match making operation perhaps we will have MorixHaruhi moments.
I really hope the fansubbers catch up.
Crusader, you probably have a point about the fanservice for guys thing but Haruhi is so skinny and bony, do guys actually like girls that are that skinny? For Earth's sake, she looks like a guy in that laptop screenshot.
@Tishy19
The fanservice for guys was squarely in the region of Tamaki's dirty mind on how the twins did their photo shoot. Given that all but two of the host club males have gone shirtless, some more than others it would be a bit strange to complain. I am no authority on feminine beauty but if you take a good look at the sticks that pass for models these days a thought will occur.
Still Haruhi is cute I like the character design since she has feminine and masculine qualities, though I guess the primary reason why is because she has to pass for a bishi when called for. Haruhi isn't like most over proportioned anime girls and she is a most welcome change from the rest of the pack. Part of the appeal for me is that this series is funny in a different way and adds a nice spin to the harem series that are pumped out season after season.
Fujioka Haruhi may not be as awesome as Suzumiya Haruhi-sama but she is awesome in her own right by simply remaing aloof from the bishis and being the straight man in the comedy troupe. Two ladies named Haruhi truely this will be a good season.
As for guys swooning over skinny girls, personally I fail to understand why. I admire and respect martial prowess and award bonus points to girls who can hold her own and demonstrate the dreaded Krav Maga on would be assailants.
Still this is merely the ranting of a guy who knows more about guns than girls and, given the times we live in, may very well end up knowing more about war than I know about peace., more about killing than living. (then again sanity may prevail and Peace will come to the Middle East)
The thing that I love about Haruhi is that she's not worshipped on a pedestal by the majority of the guys. Kyoya bullies her from time to time, the twins make fun of her, and I think at times most of the guys see her as one of their own, as in as a guy. And in this episode, she gets to be the brunt of the joke. I don't think I've seen other anime treat its female character this way. And it's refreshing to see.
Haruhi isn't like most girls like in other animes, thats what i love about her. In most romantic comedys the main character is always some ditzy, sweet, and clumsy girl.
But the thing about Haruhi is that shes not materialistic, shes not ditzy, but smart. She doesn't care about having a boyfriend thats good looking, and shes independent.
Go Haruhi
there are plenty of shoujo with fanservice for guys and girls. HEllo Shoujo Kakumei Utena, Sailor Moon, and anyone of the magical girl series bb
Yes!! Another Nekozawa fan!!
I've followed the Shojo Beat translations of the manga, and my friends all love Nekozawa. He's fantastic (and his baby sister is so cute!). I've been looking forward to his introduction the most.
In the manga, there are the same general jokes about the characters but instead of getting boring, for some reason, they just keep getting funnier. Also, there will be more development on the other characters including Mori---if they keep following the original plotline.
Whee!! This is so exciting!!
Would anyone be able to spoil me as to what is happening in the latest version of the manga please? I mean how far has the story progresses so far? Any pairing? Any interesting revelation?
Just watched episode 4, and OMG, the box-office smash that Renge's director had filmed the previous year, the vampire film "Thousand Years of Snow"? That's another work by this mangaka. XDDDDD Much shorter, though.
I must say I can only look at the screencap, but that does NOT look like fanservice to me. No breasts (not that Haruhi has any), no curves .. just back. Panties would've been more fanservice.
*spoiler starts*
Elina from the yahoo group RosettaStoneCafe posted a spoiler summary of the latest chapter; nothing really happens so far as I can tell, and I'm not allowed to repost it, but Haruhi does say she entered Ouran to become a lawyer like her mother, and that she doesn't laugh at or feel indifferent towards Tamaki. The chapter's ending line is something about a bud of awakening, accompanied by, I quote, "Tamaki's reddened face", so who knows what that is.
*spoiler ends*
Damn, they got the perfect seiyuu for the dude - I lookd at his design and the VERY first thing that pops up to my mind is "Morita".
And guess who's Nekozawa's seiyuu?
In other news, today's ep had a fair bit of funny stuff, but it wasn't as smoothly directed as previous eps. No symbolism either.
So, who really has a crush on Haruhi? It seems like everyone likes her so much...
Oh, and that little blondie boy - what's his name again - and how old is he? Is he one of the older-and-smarter-than-he-looks characters? He's so kawaii!
How many blondies are in this show so far?
Pity that Nekozawa hides his face all the time with his cloak. He's actually pretty good-looking..
I've just recently followed this series and I think I'm hooked. Tamaki is such a hoot and I think he and Haruhi will make a perfect couple.
Nekozawa rules! XD even if he is very prince-looking he dresses that way just because his personality doesn't fits his image... and I love how Tamaki gets scared every time he gets near him (all because he took that greek exam by mistake XD!!!)
omg i luv this ep it's the funniest thx for the peeps who did this summary of ep.5 by the way ithink the twins r really cute and funny
*just finish watching!*
My favorite part of this episode is the end, where Koaru looks at Hikaru sadly and professes that their world has been invaded. I almost cried!
I wonder, does Koaru love Hikaru? Thats how it seemed. If Hikaru falls in love with Haruhi, poor Koaru will be alone! I want Koaru to be happy! But I bet he'd want Hikaru to be happy too...
I enjoy the summaries and screenshots, thank you!
I think this was the funniest episode yet!
This was an amazing episode...super funny..this anime always comes up with the most random stuff and it's so funny. Like Kaoru and Hikaru fighting and throwing stuff and Hunny jumps in and bouces around..hahaha.
And yes I love the ending scene with Hikaru looking at Haruhi sadly, very nice touch and narration
Nekozawa's reaction to the light and Tamaki's reaction to that Belzenuff doll was priceless. Figures he would be blond enough to believe all that black arts mojo.I swear the tears couldn't stop from me laughing so hard in this episode. The twins staged fight was slick..figure they would find a way to get invited to Haruhi's house.
Waa, this episode was great, lol thanks for the summary. -^_^-
Nekozawa rulz!!! ^o^
The twins are soooo cute!!! X3
I love this episode =^_^= The twin's fighting was sooooo funny. And the ending scene impressed me so much ^ ^
