Please be aware that the images below are spoilery. Having said that, anyone who's been watching Ouran for the past few months surely know the kind of ending that this series will get. Overall, it's a pleasant ending with a few surprises in between. Those who were ready to bash Eclair should really take a second look because for a 'villain', she's actually not that bad. She's definitely far better than the girl from episode one. The epilogue at the end of the episode is a nice touch, it's giving the impression that Haruhi still belongs to no one. So it's still fair game for everyone from Tamaki to Kyouya to Mori to the twins. Anyway, the full summary is now available. I've also added the larger size screencaps.
The episode begins with Haruhi leaving her house in a hurry, telling her father that she's not having breakfast. Later on inside the Salon, Kyoya is in the middle of serving Eclair, who recognises him as the son of the Ootori family. She thinks it's unfortunate that Kyouya won't inherit the family's business regardless of his hard work. She also asks Kyouya how much debt Haruhi still has with the Host Club. Kyouya calls Haruhi over, telling her that Eclair wants her company. Eclair tells Haruhi that she notices that Tamaki is fond of her. This makes Haruhi wonder if Eclair is jealous. Eclair doesn't answer Haruhi's question and instead tells Haruhi that she ordered Tamaki not to come to the Host Club again. Elsewhere in the Salon, the twins are in the middle of talking about Tamaki's decision. Kyouya who sees this asks them not to stand around because they have customers here. He believes that making the customer happy is the best that they can do right now.
Kyouya then approaches Haruhi and tells her that Eclair has paid off all of her debts. Because of this, if she wants to, she can stop being a Host. Haruhi is surprised to hear this and finds herself unable to say anything. At the same time, Kyouya's father comes over and tells his son that although young people often believe that time is limitless, in reality this is not correct. He believes that it's useless to waste time on worthless activity like this. Haruhi snaps upon hearing this and tells Kyouya's father that Kyouya and the Host Club work hard so that other people can enjoy themselves. She believes that by doing this, they enrich their own feelings. Because of this, she asks Kyouya's father if he thinks making other people happy is a worthless effort. In addition to this, she believes that Kyouya is a fine person. Kyouya's father does not answer Haruhi. However, as he left the area, he realises that Haruhi is the scholarship student that Kyouya told him.
Inside the chairman's office, Tamaki's father and Tamaki's grandmother are discussing the threat that is Grand Tonnere Company. Old hag believes that Suoh family will prosper more and more if they make the Tonnere their relatives. Tamaki's father reminds the old hag that Tamaki has no desire to become a part of the Suoh family and wonders how she managed to persuade Tamaki. Old hag reveals that if Tamaki is engaged to Eclair, she'll allow Tamaki to see his mother again. In other words, old hag wants Tamaki to pay for his father's mistake. Meanwhile, Tamaki is in the music room while Eclair is taking shower with her precious opera glass. Once Eclair finishes her shower, the two hear a phone call and realises that it comes from Tamaki's cell phone. Upon grabbing the phone, Eclair realises that there is a picture of Tamaki and Haruhi on the phone. A flashback reveals that during their conversation in the Salon, Eclair asked Haruhi if she's Tamaki's lover.
Eclair was relieved when Haruhi denied this, thinking that Haruhi has no relation to Tamaki. Haruhi, however, told Eclair that just because she's not Tamaki's lover it doesn't mean that she has no relation with him. In the present time, Eclair decides not to answer the phone and instead drops it into a fish tank. She tells Tamaki that it'll be better if he's not in contact with the Host Club members again because then he can leave without regrets. All of a sudden, there is a knock on the door and a butler comes in saying that a guest has come to visit them. Tamaki is surprised upon seeing Kyouya's father entering the room and vice versa. Tamaki immediately apologises to Kyouya's father, explaining that he's the one who invites Kyouya to join the Host Club. He also wonders why Kyouya's father is in here. Kyouya's father explains that the Tonnere family will purchase his medical equipment company soon. Because of this, Kyouya won't get the company.
Eclair suddenly tells Kyouya's father that there is something that she'd like to ask from him. Back to Haruhi, she's now dressed up in the special dress for the party, wondering why she gets to do this. Hikari explains that the reason is because there will be a special parade but Haruhi tells him what she meant was why she's the only one who has to dress up as a girl. Hikaru assures her it's going to be okay saying that it's just 'cosplay'. Haruhi doesn't believe him and accuses Hikaru of lying. Meanwhile, Kyouya tries to contact Tamaki but can't seem to reach him. Because of this, he decides to call the 2nd house where Tamaki usually lives and finds out from Tamaki's maid, Shima, that Tamaki is on his way to Paris. She explains that Suoh family decides to pardon Tamaki's mother. In addition to this, Tamaki feels guilty for burdening the others. These are why Tamaki made the decision. Kyouya relays the news to the rest of the group much to their surprise.
Shima then tells Kyouya that in her opinion, Tamaki's mother won't be happy if Tamaki leaves Ouran like this. Kyouya then notices that Tamaki is in a sports car with Eclair so the Host Club decides to go after him. When they try to use Kyouya's car, however, the Ootori secret police try to stop them from leaving the area. Thankfully Mori then appears with a carriage, shocking the police. He, Hunny, and Kyouya stays behind to fight the police while the twins and Haruhi hop on to catch Tamaki before he can get to the airport. Kyouya tells Haruhi that he entrusts 'that idiot' to her. The police try to stop the carriage but they are in fear when they realise that they are against Hunny and Mori. Hunny, Mori, and Kyouya then beat up the secret police senseless. At the same time, Hikaru is rushing through the woods using the carriage so Kaoru tries to warn him about the danger. Hikaru argues that he has to do this because he wants Tamaki back.
Hikaru points out that they can meet Haruhi and get along well with everyone else because of the Host Club. Because of this, he doesn't want the club to end so suddenly like this. Unfortunately, because Hikaru is in a rush, the carriage hits a road bump and turns over, throwing Hikaru to a Pumpkin field. Hikaru realises that he's injured and can't control the carriage again so he wonders if things are really going to end like this. Upon hearing Hikaru's words, Haruhi remembers what her father said before she left to school that day: when she has to do her best, it's not good for her to hesitate. With this in her mind, Haruhi takes off her wig, throws off her costume and rides on the carriage on her own. Meanwhile inside the car, Eclair points out that Tamaki has been silent. She thinks that as a host, Tamaki should be livelier. In return Tamaki asks Eclair if she's really okay getting herself engaged to someone she recently knew.
Before Eclair can answer, the two of them hear the sound of horse steps approaching them. They are shocked when they see Haruhi coming with the carriage. Tamaki asks Haruhi to stop right away because it's dangerous. In return, Haruhi asks Tamaki to return because everyone in the Host Club doesn't want him to leave. Tamaki tells Haruhi that he's bothering everyone in the Host Club. Upon hearing this Haruhi tells Tamaki that he really is dumb. She can't believe that after all of the times he is together with them, he still can't tell the difference between people joking around and people being serious. She then points out that everyone like the Host Club and admits that she also feels the same way about it. Haruhi then offers her hand to Tamaki, asking him to jump into the carriage. However, before Tamaki can jump, Eclair tries to stop him. Meanwhile, because Haruhi is not paying attention to the horse/carriage, they veer off and hit the bridge.
Haruhi falls off the carriage and plunges into the river on her left hand side. Eclair immediately releases her hand on Tamaki upon seeing this. Tamaki thanks her and gives her a smile before jumping off into the river to save Haruhi. Tamaki then manages to catch Haruhi's hand mid air and pulls her into his embrace as they fall together into the river. Not long after this, the rest of the Host Club arrive to save the two. Eclair who sees this asks her driver to move along. The driver tells her that he remembers how Eclair often heard from her maid about the maid's son, who can play piano so well. Eclair remembers how she once asked the maid about the boy, which was Tamaki. She thinks Tamaki is stupid for passing up the opportunity to meet his mother again. Having said that, she's happy that he actually smiled just for her. As Eclair left the area, the camera lingers on the Opera glasses that she always has with her. Eclair has left it on the bridge.
That night, there's a dance party for everyone. Haruhi gets dizzy after Hunny spins her far too often but Mori was there to catch her. Inside the chairman's office, Kyouya's father tells Tamaki's father that someone else ended up purchasing the Ootori medical equipment company before the Tonnerre can get their hands on it. All management rights have been returned to Kyouya's father. When Kyouya's father investigated this, he found out that the buyer is a student investor who calls himself "K.O". It doesn't take him long to figure out that "K.O" is Kyouya Ootori, his own son. Tamaki's father thinks the entire story sounds fearsome but he kind of expecting it from Kyouya who he thinks is an excellent student. In exchange, Kyouya's father praises Tamaki. He knew all along that Kyouya is better than his brothers. However, after seeing Kyouya doing a takeover on his own and returning the company back, Kyouya's father realises that Kyouya probably finds something more valuable thanks to Tamaki.
Outside the school, Haruhi dances with Kaoru, hits Hikaru's hand and apologises for it. Haruhi then moves to dance with Tamaki but Kyouya appears and takes the lead. Tamaki goes berserk as usual so eventually Kyouya returns Haruhi to Tamaki. Back in the office, Tamaki's father thinks he and Kyouya's father should be friends just like their sons. Kyouya's father agrees but he has one condition: he wants Haruhi to be Kyouya's future wife. Tamaki's father immediately changes his mind, saying that he knew it's impossible to be friends with Kyouya's father. While everyone watches the firework, Tamaki explains that Ouran High prioritises prestige and money before anything else. Since rich people have a lot of time, Ouran Host Club is about guys profiting from rich female students with their good looks while entertaining them. The episode then ends with a shot of the 3rd music room being opened, Haruhi then asks the visitors to come in and play if they feel like it because everyone in the Host Club is sincerely waiting for them to come.
Impression:
While it's debatable, I'm glad that in the end, Haruhi goes after Tamaki not for herself but for everyone in the Host Club. Seeing Haruhi launching herself with the carriage for the sake of everyone else while the ED theme, Shissou, plays in the background was the highest point of this show. It also proves once and for all that Haruhi is not a typical heroine. While Tamaki ends up saving her from the drowning, she is the one who saved the Host Club. The best thing about this episode, however, is the fact that it's a culmination of all the minor side stories involving the twins and Kyouya. It was touching to see the twin realised that Tamaki was the one who opens up their world and it was the Host Club that allows them to meet Haruhi and befriend the others. On the other hand, it was interesting to see the Ootori police turning their back on Kyouya but it shows that power comes and goes. Without his friends, Kyouya wouldn't have been able to do much.
Another awesome moment was Haruhi owning Kyouya's father. It looks like Kyouya's father is actually the kind of man who whimpers when there is a stronger personality around. Especially when he is face to face with a strong women like Haruhi or dare I say it, Eclair Tonnere. Even Tonnere managed to order him around to send the Ootori private police to stop the Host Club from chasing her and Tamaki. Speaking of Eclair, this episode actually does her a bit more justice. She's fleshed out a little bit so she doesn't come across as a completely nasty character who's just out to get Tamaki. To begin with, she really did fall in love with Tamaki even though originally it was an arranged married. And although she conspired to keep Tamaki away from the Host Club, she is not portrayed as a heartless person who'd stop Tamaki from saving Haruhi when she saw Haruhi fell into the river. She also didn't have to pay off Haruhi's debt but she did it anyway.
I think the real villain of the piece is Tamaki's grandma, who was bitter to the last. At least Eclair was nice enough to let Tamaki go but I doubt his grandma will let Tamaki sees his mother now that he breaks off his engagement with Eclair. Her words about Tamaki having to pay for his father’s mistake were cruel. Moving on to other characters, it was amusing to see Tamaki's father offering his friendship to Kyouya's father but withdraw it right away when he realises that they both want Haruhi as their daughter-in-law. I really hope that Kyouya's exposure to the Host Club prevents him from becoming like his father. It's kind of scary to know that he is actually capable of buying his father's company. Mori and Hunny were awesome in their ability to scare the Ootori secret police. This is a reference to episode 7 of the series, I think. As a side note, I'm glad the ending is open-ended enough to allow Mori/Haruhi pairing to happen in the future. :D
Overall, Ouran has been one entertaining anime. It had its slow moments but I've enjoyed the majority of the stories. And I have to say I'm surprise to see its popularity. Last week's episode brings about the highest number of comments for one entry. It even defeats other series like Mai Hime, Mai Otome, and Honey and Clover in terms of popularity. I have to say that I'm grateful for the patronage. I've been enjoying the ride so once again, thank you for discussing the series here. As for the series itself, I hope there will be a second season sometime in the future. If that happens, I hope all of the original VAs, especially Sakamoto Maaya, gets to voice the characters again. I think they have done a wonderful job in the first 26 episodes. However, since the writers managed to cover the majority of the series up to volume 8/9, I am not sure if this is even possible. Either way, I'm glad the way the anime writers wrapped up the series.

Well, that is for Ouran. The next show that comes on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning will be the animated adaptation of Death Note. Please look forward to it.
I really hope Viz Media doesn't license this show. They'll totally ruin the magic of it with a flat dub.

Well the manga is still ongoing and with the rate of it's popularity and successs it's possible for a second season. It would make them more money if they did so.That's what happened with Jigoku Shoujo- which I can't wait for the new season to air!!!!

I really would have liked a HaruxTama ending but in a harem show, there's never any definite pairings. Guess it's supposed to cater for everyone. I'd love a second season though. Maybe someone should start a petition like they did for Zero no Tsukaima.

This show has done so well it should have a second season, but Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu was even more popular and they didn't so i wouldn't count on it.

I just watched the raw, and even though I could only understand about 33.333% of it, it was still enough to make me laugh and cry, and then both at the same time! That was awesome; I loved how it ended, even though it's still kinda open-ended. Or not, depending on how you look at it (lots of room for the fangirls to play around with). I can't wait for the sub to come out so I can catch what I missed.

XD KYAAAAHHH!! OOOO!! IT'S SO SAD THAT IT'S OVER, BUT IT'S A GREAT ENDING! I WAS ALWAYS A TAMAKI/HARUHI FAN, BUT AT THE SAME TIME, I WANTED HER TO BE UP FOR GRABS! A MOST SATISFYING ENDING! WAAAIII!! Heheh. The thought of Tamaki's dad and Kyoya's dad fighting over whose son gets Haruhi was funny.
Thats great they left it with no coupling at the end (sorry all H/T fans). ;) I'm glad they all still get a chance with Haruhi, haha (gogo Mori).

I'm most happy that they didn't leave a definite ending - but all the same, this episode still was very Tamaki/Haruhi-ish. I mean, they had her go after him and when they could have done the dances is any order, they picked to have Tamaki/Haruhi last for the most impact.
There's definitely some kind of symbolism in her wearing a dress but I'm too overcome by relief that they left it at least slightly open-ended to think carefully.
Im back, i read the summaries! Oh wow what a dramatic ending. There's hint about the Tamaki and Haruhi couple..its beautiful! I love it when he jumped off the carriage and they embraced!
XD When Haruhi was rescued she said the same thing as quoted by Tamaki from Episode 1 where "Handsome men can't be hurt by water". That reminded me of how Haruhi admired Tamaki for the first time.
The ending wasn't as dissapointing as I thought :D This episode shows a lot of Haruhi's bravery, determinaton and somehow led into a "Girl in Shining Armor to rescue a Prince in Distress" fiasco XD.
Now if Tamaki and Haruhi were to wed, a fall into the river under the sunset would be one of their most memorable meetings of all.
Finally, it solidifies the ties between each Host Club members. Not for the merit but the undenying relationship each of them have linking to one another. Beautiful ;___;

I'm not sure I'd say the ending was as open as people would like to think. There was a subtle moment there after Kyouya pushes Haruhi over to Tamaki where both of them looked at him as though to say, "Is this okay?" As he's done throughout the entire series, despite whatever other interests Kyouya has held (in either one of them), he 'pushed them together'.
While there was no overt confession of love, I thought this episode was pretty clear that both of the blockheads realized their feelings for the other. Haruhi will always belong to each of the guys, but all their dances were friendly. Tamaki's was the only one that was overtly reomantic. That tender hug in midair and the way they shared the last dance and watched the uber-romantic fireworks just screamed "LOVE".
Now there's going to be this big void where Host Club used to be.

Oh my goosh, I love Kyoya. It was fun that he actually snatched Haruhi before Tamaki. I certainly hope that there's going to be a 2nd season, I'm dying for it.

Ouran High School Host Club has been one of the funniest anime out recently. Even the author has fun drawing each character and telling their story. But I would have loved for Bones to have included the silly idea about Kyouya bringing his TV remote instead of his cellphone and trying to use it to fulfil one of Tamaki's requests.
Aw, this series couldn't be over. I loved the last episode. They really ended it well. It makes me feel like there's a chance for it to go on. Oh well, if there's no anime, we've got the manga still.
I thought it was funny how Kyouya's and Tamaki's Dad were fighting over Haruhi.
The dances were sweet. I just wished I heard more from the other people. I'm going to miss Honey and the Twins a lot. =[[

I would like to express a huge thank you for writing the blog for this series. It helped greatly when I watched raws and allowed me to stay on top of what's going on weekly whenever the subs for this series arrive two weeks late. I loved this series and hope that there will be a second season. If not, then I await for the ninth book, which is having Kasanoda ( not sure if I spelled his name right ) and the second Halloween. I am GREATLY satisfied with the ending because I prefer that Haruhi remained indifferent to all the members. That is one of the reasons why I like her because she isn't like most female characters displayed in anime. It is not like I hate Tamaki, but I don't think he really is in love with her. I think it's the difference in manner that drew him to her like all the other members. Let's face it, he is always trying to change her into something she's not by forcing dresses and her personality like all the girls he hosts. I like all the members including Tamaki, but if I had to prefer to her be with someone it would either be Mori, Kyoya, or one of the twins. Their relationship to her seem more on the basis of love. Oh well, like I said before, I am greatly satisfied with the ending. It leaves an open for a second season. Also, I am wondering if it's possible that Eclair could be a future character in the manga to build up toward an end. Lol, this is the first time I ever thought about Kyoya's initials as K.O. I automatcially thought of video games. Sad to see this series go but glad to know that the ending came out as it did. I guess that is all.

Me too...and I'm also gald that the admission was that she loves the host club, not Tamaki, cause that would have been so cliche and, well.. I don't like cliches especially romantic sappy cliches.. so I'm glad they didn't go further than the hug >_>

Oh wow!!! That was an AWESOME episode. I think BONES really ended the series professionally. Hints of seriousness yet still laughable. There are also a lot of Haru/Tama moments and the dance... I wonder if Tamaki still thinks that he's dancing with his "daughter".
I think Kyouya was great in this episode too. Purchasing the Ootori medical equipment company. It's soo him!! He really is... smart. I've always wondered if he was physically inclined. He seems like the kind of character who is Good-At-Everything but I can't imagine him running. It's not very dignified. :D
Haruhi has definately developed feeling for the Host Club (not nessesarily romantic) and I think it's really sweet of her to chase after Tamaki. Ranka also played... well... kinda major role in that I guess.
Overall it really was a satisfying episode. They should DEFINATELY write a sequel. I mean, look at the number of viewers and the response!
OMG! That made me cry a lot TvT. Hope bones can make up a 2nd season on this, because the manga is still ongoing you know and it would be sad if they just ended up here. And thanks for the summary ^_^

Yay! 26 th episode. I was waiting for this. It just has been a week, but it seemed immensely long. OOh, I love the ending. Just great. The way Kyouya intercepted Tamaki's dance with Haruhi just implies how Kyouya loves to interfere with their relationship, but never really thought of breaking them apart. Just sweet.
How i gonna miss Ouran now. A second season lies in the hand of our Bisco Hatori sama. Please make more room for at least 12 more episodes

I don't know if anybody noticed, but in the previous episodes Tamaki was pictured as the one holding the host club together, putting them in a carriage and pulling the reins. Everyone was sitting passively, enjoying themselves.
In this episode it is not Tamaki pulling the reins in order to keep the host club together. Everyone played an active part in making it the carriage 'drive', realising that they are not only here for the ride, all of the host club members are doing their best in order to make the carriage 'move'.

What a good show, good show, good really worth it.
First of all, I want to thank you (Garten) for making this beautiful blog! The pics you took are awesome, I love them. Second of all, (:D) I love how Kyoya handed Haruhi over to Tamaki... I guess it means he won't betray Tamaki and knows that Haruhi and Tamaki are meant for each other, or at least is my point of view. Oh! and also how cute when Mori catched Haruhi after all the spinning with Hunny, cute!!!
This was the first actual Japanese series I watched without the english version. And I have to give it a great 11/10 rating! ^_^ This series had me from the very beginning, as well as Strawberry Panic, which were both airing about the same time. I loved all the characters and episodes. In reality though, I actually wished this type of thing happened. It would be so awesome to go to club full of great looking guys and cute guys as well and to spend an afternoon with them! I'd go there everyday! Lol. I'm aiming for another season of this show and maybe one day every Ouran lover will find out who Haruhi chooses to be with. It will be interesting to see if Haruhi becomes the Ootori heir or Suoh heir. It's funny to think about 2 grown men fighting about who Haruhi gets to marry. Lol. I don't mind Tamaki, but I like Kyouya the most. He's got the kind of caring that's hidden but you know it's there type that I like. ^_^ Well, that all for now. eh I wouldn't put it past Kyouya to do something that crazy. He's quite the mad-genius (and it reminded me of that episode when he got woken up by the Host Club and complained that he went to bed at 5 the night before...)
Anyway...it is open-ended in a way but it had the TamakiHaruhi fangirl in me SCREAMING because well...they got good screentime after the disaster that was episode 25.
(Notice the PUMPKIN patch? That honestly depressed me so much...for a moment there, I really did think that things were going to end terribly...)
Still, just the moment when he saw her on the road and cried out "HARUHI!" did it for me...and all that followed~
And yeah I sympathize with Eclair a bit too...but not Old Hag! She should still die...

Hey everyone! Just a thought but, when Kyouya bought over his father's company, he did it to prove his father wrong regarding his participation in the host club. Which means that all the earnings that the host club made within that year could actually be that much to buy over his fathers company! WTF?! lol!
I love this ending! I was so afraid , that BONES would screw it up. But this last episode was beautiful.... so many Tama/Haru hints!!! And I really likes, that everyone didn´t want Tamaki to leave, not just Haruhi, that would have been just stupid... let`s be honest, before ep 25 she thought of him as an idiot without knowledge of the darker aspects of life. It would have been too rushed, if they ended up together...
I think of it more as a preview of what`s still to come in the manga... why does it takes so long to release volume 8 in English?? I want to read chapter 42 and 43... I have heard so much anout them T_T

I don't think that Kyoya uses the Host Club funds to buy his father's company since he complains about how much things (like the French carriage) cost. I think he has a sideline that we don't know about which enabled him to buy his father's comapny. After all, we don't know *why* he was up until 5 AM (or whenever it was) that day....
Thank you for writing these whole series! I have a lot of hopes for a second season, since the manga is still going strong. One of my favourite parts about Ouran is, unlike many shoujo manga where spunky female characters fall in love and become loyal to the love of their life, Haruhi remains spunky. I hope it remains this way ^^

I have watched the ep.26 three times and very touch about Haruhi and decide to bring the king back.

Maybe Ouran would benefit from a second season, but with such a good ending, maybe not.
I'm so sad that this series had to end, but what an ending. The end scene with Haruhi chasing after Tamaki was really well-done and loved the imbrace with the two as they were falling.
Though I am disappointed there was no closure to the series but I'm guess that the open ending leaves an opportunity for a second season.

I do have to say I was watching every second till the last episodes came out, and I jumped the the bittorrent that was the first to sub it. I think out of all the episodes it was the best, even though its the episode that concluded the series. I'm usually never satisfied with the endings in anime that are based off of manga and yet I was plesently suprised. I was worried becasue I love the manga so much. I havn't seen the ending in the manga yet, but I liked this. I have a felling they wont make a second series, which makes me sad but I also know they really wouldn't be able to do much anyways. Maybe an OVA or Movie would be pretty.
Other notes. I can wait till Death Note airs. I think I might cry at the anticipation. I hope its good because I adore the manga. Not looking forward to the events in book 7 how ever. u_u It'll be animated and everything. *cry*

Though it seems unlikely, I still hope for a continuation of some sort. Even if it's not a 2nd season, an OVA perhaps? I do know that my friends and I will miss seeing the host club after this. I think I love Kyouya just a little bit too much after the whole business of him being slapped by his father in ep. 25 and getting even by buying his father's company in this ep.! The show is over... but just like everyone else, I'm glad in the end there is no pairing at all. I'm still praying at more Mori/Haruhi here!
I hope there would be 2nd season in the future, and in meantime, I guess I will just enjoy MoriHaru fanfiction xDD
Continuing the anime would be nice. ^_^ Haruhi-chan doesn't have a reason now, she just wants to hang out with her friends~. That's sweet, considering the whole anime didn't focus strongly on paying the debt-- it slowly started to focus towards their adventures and pasts, the debt fading into the background and occasionally coming out for some humor or something.
The ending? I don't think it was open minded. So far, Kyouya seems like the most likely one to love Haruhi next, considering Kaoru doesn't get any moments with her, and Honey-senpai and Mori-senpai established that they have no romantic interest in her at all too. Even if they don't fall in love, Kyouya and Haruhi, a marriage being discussed with her father and Haruhi and Kyouya's reactions would be nothing short of priceless.
ermm i think that theres gnna be a 2nd season in 3 years or there might not be..it determines if the manga is gnna continue for a lot of volumes or else the anime wouldnt have a story since they follow the story of the manga..
