Not a bad episode at all. This one actually gives Hunny a little bit of background story and explains why his character ends up like he is now. I think I'll blame it all on Tamaki for tempting him to the darkside full of cakes and stuffed bunny. Having said that, there weren't that much character development for Hunny. At the end of the day, Hunny remains the same character that he was before. The revelation about his past pretty much confirms what we already knew all along about him: that he is a cake-eating monster. I do appreciate the writers' attempt to expand the story by introducing the family members of the Host Club. I just wish that next time they introduce someone a little bit more pleasant than Chika.

Brief summary:
Haruhi arrives in front of the Host Club and finds a young boy wearing glasses looking for Hunny. Hunny then appears from inside the room and recognises the boy as "Chika-chan". All of a sudden, however, Chika proceeds to attack Hunny. The two then engage each other in a battle of martial arts while Renge appears to become a spectator. After a while, it looks as if Chika wins the fight when he manages to knock Hunny off using a pole. However, later on it's obvious that Hunny is the winner because he manages to pin Chika's pants down using shuriken. A very surprised Haruhi later on finds out that Chika is none other than Hunny's younger brother, Haninozuka Yasuchika. The two brothers are proficient in Karate and Judo and have been thought to stage a fight when they spot each other. Unlike Hunny, however, Chika dislikes sweet things and despises his brother for abandoning the family's martial arts training in favour of cakes and stuffed animals.
Hunny used to be in the Karate club but didn't enjoy it because he had to pretend to be manly and forgo his obsession with sweets and stuffed animals. One day, however, Tamaki came along with a bunny puppet trying to recruit Hunny into forming a club together. Tamaki, however, wants Hunny to use his true image which is that of cake and stuffed animal lovers. Hunny pretended not to like those things but Tamaki told him that a real strength lies in one's ability to be true to oneself. Hunny who's curious about this decides to ask his father but his father ends up challenging him into a fight. Much to the instructor's horror, Hunny manages to beat up his own father. Ever since then Hunny is asked to never fight again because otherwise the country risks undergoing inspection from the United Nation for possessing weapon of mass destruction (Hunny himself). Because of this Hunny quit the Karate club and join Host Club. Ever since then, Hunny's relation with Chika has been strained.
Tamaki decides to launch a mission to reconcile the two brothers. The twins, on the other hand, think that Chika simply has inferiority complex and prefers to do something else. Hunny also tells Tamaki that he doesn't mind being hated by his brother. All he wants is for Chika to grow up quickly. The twins, on the other hand, think that it's Hunny who should grow up quickly. Their conversation, however, is interrupted by the arrival of Chika, who proceeds to attack Hunny as usual. In his anger, Chika calls his brother an Alien and reveals to the Host Club that Hunny is capable of eating 3 large cakes after supper. Hunny also has this creepy 'special cake night' every week where he and Usa-chan devour unusual amount of cakes. Despite this Chika was happy that there was a time when he and Hunny used to get along. Back then Hunny's preference for sweet things and stuffed animal was still under control. However, there was a time when Hunny had to temporarily sever those things.
During that time, a person told Hunny to find the strength to accept oneself. Ever since then, Hunny turns into an Alien that he is now. The Host Club members are horrified to hear this especially Tamaki since he's the one who said those words. Hunny apologises to Chika but he's happy for being recruited by Tamaki into the Host Club and therefore won't change himself. Because of this Hunny asks Chika to settle this like a man, Haninozuka way. If Chika wins, he'll at least stop eating cake at midnight. Everyone is dumbfounded by this lame bet but the fight goes on anyway. Mori thinks that Hunny will probably let Chika wins. At first it does look that way but eventually Hunny beats him up badly. As it turns out, Hunny can't let go his cake obsession and even decide to celebrate his winning by having special cake 3 times per week. Haruhi finds it disturbing that Hunny's love for cake proceeds his love for his brother.
Impression:
I was quite surprised to see Hunny willingly defeat everyone in order to have his cake and eat it too. While the whole thing about finding a true strength in the things that one like is true, there is something to be said about too much of a good thing. I actually wonder if we're supposed to see Hunny as a freak or as someone who obtains what he wants because he loves it and willing to fight for it. It's not a secret that Japanese society prioritises the need of many (family, groups, countries) before the need of oneself. In this regard, Hunny can be seen as a selfish person and therefore earns the 'Alien' nickname that he obtains from his brother. I am not too sure if the writers of this episode wants me to sympathise with his plight or to think that he's a selfish brat who only cares about himself. Either way, I think it's possible to achieve individualism while still maintaining contacts with family and groups. It doesn't have to be a choice between one or the other.
The episode itself was not that funny though. Several scenes were quite amusing but they're not the kind that made me laugh. The weapon of mass destruction joke actually felt a bit over the top. I mean I doubt Hunny is capable of destroying anything since Hunny will be too busy stuffing his face with cakes the minute he sees them. The drama was not that strong either. I would have sympathised with Chika if he didn't come across as a pouty jerk. Although Hunny did come across as cake eating freak, personality-wise, he's a lot more pleasant than Chika. I have to give a point for Tamaki for ruining the relationship between two brothers in order to form his Host Club. Of course he did this without realising it but that's what makes it amusing. Having said that I don't know why the Host Club was shocked to hear that Hunny likes to eat cake in his house as well. I don't think anyone can pretend to like cake and actually eat it as much as Hunny does.

On next week's episode: Haruhi is in Lobelia so Tamaki is trying to 'save' her from the clutches of those Lobelia girls.
Wooo Hunny in action!
Wooo Mori in action!
Wooo Renge in action...?
omigosh this episode looks so cute!!!! And I CAN'T wait for the next episode. That should definatly get interesting. Well, I'm off to actually watch it! Bye 4 now.
XDD nice episode!! but !!! T.T
mori's brother did not appear
><
I do appreciate the writers' attempt to expand the story by introducing the family members of the Host Club. I just wish that next time they introduce someone a little bit more pleasant than Chika.
You can't blame that on the writers, though. That was Bisco Hatori's idea. (And there is no way in HADES I'm ever blaming writers/directors for trying to adapt a manga as faithfully as they can. When they try to "improve" on a manga too much, it ends up looking like @$$. *cough*Rayearth*cough*)
This episode made me want to eat cake.
This episode makes me like Hunny even less [he's already my least favorite Host Club member][that is, after the Lobelia girls & Renge's "ohohohoho"]. It was easier to understand the other characters when the animators did a "character-developping episode", but no one can relate to this enormous love of cakes and bunnies. And indeed, Hunny does seem selfish to pick cakes over reconciling with his brother. It seems to me that if he were as sweet as he looked, he would choose his brother [on the other hand....who would choose that pouty jerk]. Hunny looks best when he's angry/fighting....bummer.
argh, what! Why did they leave out Mori's little brother.. :(((
>Kira
I don't think that was the reason, Chika himself also has a massive brother complex (they even say so in the episode) . It was probably just the time constraints.
Anyway, I had no problem with Honeys' characterization - I mean, yes, he's selfish, but no-one's said that he's as sweet inside as on the outside. He finally found the courage to do what he liked, and he's not going to give it up. Chika should accept this and stop wishing his brother would be someone else. I mean, so what if Honey likes to eat insane amounts of cake at midnight with his stuffed bunny? It's not a crime or anything. I think if anyone was blowing things out of proportion here, it was Chika.
I actually saw this episode and My favorite part was with Tamaki, Honey , and the bunny.
But I still thought the twins were hilarious when they squished their faces together!! Another good episode!
Satoshi did'nt came out ;_;
I don't think Hunny is wrong, in fact faking a defeat just to give false pride to his brother is worse. He already said it is a man fight, so no holding back. He just did what he said he would do. It was his brother who really sucked and lost. That's just life, tough. BTW why is eating cakes so bad, Hunny is fucking ass strong, stronger than his pretentious father who only looks cool. In fact I think the more cakes he eats the stronger he'll become (may he is a Saiyan, in permanant super Saiyan 1 mode ahhehe), so what's the big deal. It's not like he is slacking off.
I was actually more surprised of the fact that Mori could talk so much o_o
next episode looks much more interesting~
shouldn't Hunny be really fat by now? hee hee.
I've read the manga and am a lil disappointed that Mori's Bro did not make an appearance at all.
It would have been fun to see the contrast of Hunny&Mori = Chika&Satosi in my opinion.
And also lastly, Hunny did compliment Chika's improvement to make Chika feel happy but that didn't show either >.<
I tend to think Renge was right in the first place about Honey. He's a scary manipulative little man. Just subtler than his movie version. Just as they devoted the previous one to finding Kyouya's "other side", this is Honey's "other side".
Actually, if one thinks about it, Renge was pretty much right about everyone. In one issue of Animage there was an article about the "pairs" of the host club (Kyouya&Tamaki, Mori&Honey and the twins) in which two fangirls and Renge talked about the guys. Renge's opinion was always different from the other fangirls' but so far the anime has proved her right. (So I really have to wonder about Kyouya... "ambitious second in command aiming at the king's throne and the king himself"? Eerrhhhmmm.... :3 should I take it that way...?)
@ kuromitsu
(So I really have to wonder about Kyouya... "ambitious second in command aiming at the king's throne and the king himself"? Eerrhhhmmm.... :3 should I take it that way...?)
Eeeee~ I'd die if that were true! See, Kyouya/Tamaki's my second favourite pairing (my favourite being Haruhi/Tamaki). I love the Kyouya-loves-Tamaki-but-knows-Tamaki-loves-Haruhi-so-he-supports-Haruhi/Tamaki situation even more. :DDD
Anyway, about the actual episode. I don't think Honey's wrong, either. If anyone's wrong, it's all the people who pressure Honey to be someone he isn't, and that includes Chika. Plus, I think if Honey was actually allowed to be himself and eat cakes during his childhood, he wouldn't be the gluttonous, cake- and bunnies-obsessed person he is now. Now he probably feels he's got to make up for lost time, which is... what? 16? 17 years? (Can't remember if he's 17 or 18 years old.)
hia peeps!! wow, that ep. was...creepy!, i love bun-bun so much Hunny, was a little scary though... oh well hes still the same. i didn't realy like his brother though...i cant wait for the next one! looks like Haruhi's dad is going to make her go to that one all girls shool....pour host club...oh well!
This episode left me with mixed feelings... Honey was always nothing more than a fun character for me and I always used to squeal with all the girls, when he had a cute scene...
Now he seems like a selfish, spoiled little pig to me... I mean, what`s with all this cake??? Well maybe I`m just jealous, that he can eat so much without gaining any weight ^_^! Nobody says that it is necessary to repress one`s personality for the sake of other people, but being obsessed with sweets isn`t really a aspekt of a personality, is it?
I don't think Kyouya spoke once in this episode. I actually really noticed him near the part where he stood recluse from everyone else near the end of the episode, it was kind of strange... he was like some kind of prop, it gave me a weird feeling.
Anyways, that was a joyable episode.
Hm, scratch that, he spoke one sentence.. still a very strange feeling.
Kyouya may not have spoken but when Hikaru talks about people comparing Honey and Chika as they're looking through the window, based on his expression, I got the vague feeling he'd be thinking about his own situation.
Has anyone else realised that the subbed version (the one by lunar) is yet to come out and is about a month late? Does anyone know what's going on? and are lunar still doing the subs for this?
kyaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
kawaiiiiii!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
