For those of you who are interested, that post about Nara that I promised yesterday is now up on Kongetsu. It's kind of brief though since I decided to split it into two parts. Anyway, this episode is not as funny as the one that came before it but it offers a lot of character development on the twin's side. Come to think of it, I like the way the writers put the majority of the comedy on last week's episode and the serious character development on this one. I am just hoping that the rest of the male characters will be given a serious development like this one.

Continuing from the previous episode, Haruhi tells Arai that the twins are her classmates. When it comes to introduces Tamaki, however, she remembers that he doesn't like being called "Senpai" so Haruhi decides to call him 'an acquintance', which upsets Tamaki even more. Arai and Haruhi then catch up with one another, while in a far-off table, Hikaru tells everyone that he thinks Arai was not Haruhi's friend but just a classmate. Arai asks Haruhi from which club the guys are from and Haruhi sheepishly admits that they're from the Host Club. Their conversation, however, is interrupted by Hikaru who demands Haruhi to fill his cup since she's working. Tamaki, on the other hand, is shredding his vacation rule book in the corner and claims that the shredded papers are not rubbish but a harmster's house. Haruhi reminds his sempai that he doesn't have a Hamster so Tamaki points out that he's not Haruhi's sempai but merely 'an acquintance'.

Arai, however, finds the guys to be rather fun to watch and is glad to see Haruhi doing well in Ouran. Haruhi smiles upon hearing this, prompting Arai to blush. Hikaru, who's jealous about to see this accuses the guy of having a crush on Haruhi. Haruhi immediately scolds Kaoru from being rude. However, much to everyone's surprise, Arai does not deny this and in fact, points out that Haruhi has already rejected him. Everyone is surprised to hear this including Haruhi, prompting Kyouya to ask her why she's surprised as well. A flashback then reveals that around one year ago, when Arai and Haruhi were still 3rd year junior high school students, Arai found out that Haruhi was going to Ouran. Because of this he told her that he too wants to go to Ouran but Haruhi misinterpret Arai's intention and thinks that he wants to go to Ouran to study there. Similarly, when he told her that he wants to go out with her, she thought he wants to go out to the faculty room.

Back to the present time, Haruhi is in terror upon hearing this and even more so after Kyouya accuses her of breaking the poor guy's heart with her insensitivity. Because of this Haruhi apologises to Arai now, one year later. Arai doesn't mind and likes the way Haruhi always look at the eyes of the person she's talking to. Tamaki becomes excited upon hearing stories of Haruhi's past so now all Host Club members gather around Arai to hear his stories. The only exception to this are the twins and Kaoru actually wants to join but refrain from doing so since Hikaru looks upset. Tamaki tries to invite them to join the group but Hikaru claims that he's not interested in hearing old stories. Moreover, he thinks Haruhi no longer has any feeling for Arai. Haruhi becomes angry upon hearing this and proceeds to slap Kaoru. She tells the brat that is not his decision to make and warns him that she will not forgive him if he insults her friend once more.

Hikaru is upset to hear this and tells Haruhi that she needs no other friends because her friends are himself and the Host Club members. After Hikaru storms off to the room, followed by Kaoru, Tamaki can't help but making a comment that the twins' world is still small after all. Meanwhile inside their room, Kaoru tells his twin that he thinks Hikaru is being selfish to the point that even Haruhi was surprised. Hikaru claims that he can't help this but Kaoru thinks that he should at least apologises to Arai, who's about to leave the Pensione now. Outside the Pensione, Haruhi apologises to Arai for Hikaru's behaviour but everyone is surprised when all of a sudden, Hikaru comes out and personally apologises to Arai. After Arai left, however, Haruhi asks Kaoru why he pretends to be Hikaru. Kaoru explains that Hikaru's mood is still bad. He, however, has one request to Haruhi and that is to go out on a date with him for one day.

The next day, however, Kaoru pretends to have flu and asks Hikaru to take his place instead. Kaoru also tells his twin that a person can't express his/her feeling unless that person says something. Meanwhile, Tamaki is upset because Haruhi is going out on a date with Hikaru and even more so when Hunny points out that this is probably Haruhi's first date. He also asks Kaoru to explains why Haruhi looks extremely cute for the date. As it turns out, the twins maid came to Haruhi's room early in the morning in order to dress her up, thus explaining the fugly wig. Kaoru believes it's a good idea for Hikaru to find more people that he likes because so far they've only care about each other. He also thinks that Hikaru likes Haruhi alot but does not know how to express his feelings and therefore acts like a spoilt child who doesn't want to share his belonging. Because of this, Hikaru needs to learn how to get along with other people if he wants to become friends with a person.

Kyouya realises that this 'date' is merely a way for Hikaru to learn to be considerate of other people's feelings. Kaoru tells them that this is why he doesn't want them to interfere. Meanwhile, Hikaru and Haruhi try to decide where they should go. Haruhi has no idea since originally it was Kaoru who was going to take her somewhere. Hikaru thinks maybe they should go to the mall but since neither of them is interested to buy clothes, the plan goes bust. Upon noticing the sky, Haruhi remembers that Misuzu told her that the weather may change and therefore she hopes it won't turn into thunderstorm. Tamaki, who watches from afar, thinks that the date is a disaster and thinks they should interfere. He asks Kyouya to be a mugger so Hikaru will have a chance to save Haruhi. Before they can do anything, however, Hunny is seen walking in front of Haruhi and Hikaru pretending to be an ice cream seller. Thankfully Mori manages to hide Hunny before they noticed him.

The appearance of the ice cream seller, however, causes Haruhi to crave some ice cream so she proceeds to buy one for herself. She then offers Hikaru some of her ice cream but since this means an indirect kiss, Tamaki interferes by pretending to be the ice cream seller who gives Haruhi another ice cream for free. He's immediately throttled by Kaoru for interfering with the date. Meanwhile, Haruhi spots a place selling pickled vegetables so he offers some to Hikaru. She then buys two bags of the vegies for Kaoru and gets an idea to spend their time looking for Omiyage for Kaoru as well. Seeing that the two get along rather well, Kaoru suggests that they go home before Tamaki ruins everything. At the same time Haruhi is shocked to hear the sound of a thunderstorm so Hikaru thinks maybe they should go back now. Before they can do this, however, Arai notices Haruhi and wonders what she is doing here. It turns out the place is his father's shop.

Upon hearing Haruhi's story, Arai offers to drive the two back, prompting Hikaru to be jealous again. Haruhi, on the other hand, is keen to accept Arai's offer before the thunderstorm is coming. Hikaru who doesn't understand this becomes angry and tells Haruhi to do whatever she wants to do before running away from her and Arai. Arai wonders why Hikaru doesn't like Haruhi's old friend since he thinks Hikaru probably has some old friends as well. Upon hearing this Haruhi remembers how the twins once told her that they didn't have any friends while they were in junior high. Meanwhile inside the Pensione, Misuzu receives a phone call from Arai who informs her that Haruhi had a fight with Hikaru which ends with Hikaru leaving Haruhi and Haruhi chasing after him. At the same time, Hikaru is seen taking a shelter underneath a big tree when all of a sudden Tamaki calls him through a cellphone. Tamaki tells Hikaru that Haruhi is afraid of thunder and angrily asks Hikaru to think more about other people's feeling before being jealous.

After the conversation ends, Hikaru remembers how Haruhi kept looking at the sky and saying how she hopes there won't be any thunderstorm. Hikaru proceeds to look for Haruhi and eventually finds a Church's door slightly opened. While walking inside, he remembers how Kaoru once told him to pay attention to little gestures from other people because it could be important. Hikaru eventually finds Haruhi hiding underneath a Church's altar. He then puts his headphone on her ears and covered her with the tablecloth. Hikaru also apologises for leaving her alone and saying cruel things to an important friend. The next day, Arai comes to the Pensione bringing a watermelon and Hikaru comes over to thank him for it. Kyouya, who watches everyone from the top floor asks Kaoru if he consider the possibility that Hikaru might fall in love. Kaoru, however, thinks it's too early for Hikaru because he's still stupid. Kyouya agrees with this when he sees Tamaki looking happy to get a watermelon and tells Kaoru that there are some idiots in their club.

Impression:

I didn't like the way Hikaru acted like a spoiled brat throughout this whole episode. Having said that, I have to say that sometimes I feel some kind of jealousy as well when I see my close friends getting along with people that I don't know very well. It's especially hard when you haven't met said friend for a while and when you do, you realise that they have a set of brand new friends. Although you're still a good friend with the person, sometimes it feels as if you can't penetrate whatever conversation your friend has with his/her new friends. Because his/her experience with them is different from his/her experience with you. It's even worse when you are on your own while being invited to a party which consists mostly of people that already know each other. I wonder if anyone else ever get invited to a gathering by a friend but ends up feeling like the odd one out because the other people who already knew each other.

Anyway, there weren't that many jokes included in this episode but I found the majority of Tamaki's scenes to be comedy gold as usual. I especially like the scenes where he looked so upset after Haruhi calls him 'an acquintance'. The interesting thing about this episode, however, is the revelation that Kaoru is actually a lot more clever and thoughtful than his twin. I suspect that all of these times, the only reason he has not socialised with other people is because he does not want to leave his twin alone. However, he now realises that he can no longer holding Hikaru's hand the whole time and believes that his twin needs to grow up a little bit. And while Kaoru's cunning level has not reached Kyouya's level just yet, one has to praise his idea to put Haruhi and Hikaru on a date together. I can't help but wonder though if Kaoru is actually interested in Haruhi as well or merely playing along for his brother's sake.

Next week seems to be an adaptation of a rather recent chapter with Kyouya.

Thanks for the commentary! Aw, this episode is cute, even if it isn't as funny as the previous one [the elephant head still baffles me]. I think in the manga, Haruhi was drawn so it looked like Kaoru had merely curled the hair she already had rather than add a wig. She actually looked cute in the manga.

It's cool to finally see the difference between the twins. They were really cute in this ep. Can't wait for the one with Kyouya!!!!

PS: If this is a two-ep version of the three-chapter manga story, then how was the story split up in the manga? I see two clear divisions in the story [hence the two eps], but I don't see how this can be divided into three....

LOL regarding the party thing you said, I typically avoid them (in fact I just ditched outta one I was invited to this Friday). I hate going and feeling all uncomfortable and fake with everyone just so people think you're cool. I'd rather be natural with people I know then fake with ones I dont. =)

Poor Tamaki! I really like the twins in this one, both for Hikaru's effort at trying to be with Haruhi and Kaoru for being aware enough to set this date up for Hikaru.

I don't like the ponytails on Haruhi either.

She gets to go out with Kyoya next?! Can't wait!

ick, Haruhi looks weird with those ice cream curls. She looked better in the manga. They stuffed a lot of things from the manga into the anime. They left out the scene when tamaki and the gang show up at the church. I guess the writers thought it would ruin the mood..

That church scene was too cute.

I was invited to my friend's bday party a few weeks ago. I did know 2 or 3 of the other guests, but once they had to leave, I was left alone for the most part because everyone else knew each other so well. I hated the awkward situation I was placed in, but I also really wanted to be there for my friend's bday^^.

Nehooz, this was my favourite story in the manga! I'm a HikaruxHaruhi supporter all the way~ (although TamakixHaruhi comes close too). Sadly, I can't seem to find the raw version of this episode...nuuuu >

Frankly Hikaru have always disturbed me since his behavior is really sociopathic. If the tone of this show wasn't light comedy he could easily be a really off kilter and scary person. I do however appreciate how his responses in this episode is perfectly believable in regard of his unique social background or lack there of.

Thanks for your insightful comments about friendship & jealousy... only just recently I felt that way about one of my close friends making a new friend... it felt awkward because I felt shut out of any conversation. I first tried selling this feeling to myself as her neglecting me (a childish sort of 'betrayal')

Irony was, once I realised that it was plain & simple jealousy, I made a real effort to get to know this other person better... which promptly backfired because my friend then got quite jealous & confronted me about it. Both of us have behaved quite out-of-character to each other since ... & it's put a real rift in our relationship - one that still hasn't fully resolved

I was so happy when Haruhi slaped Hikaru. I love him, but he was being mean, obsesive, and jealousy.
I felt bad for haruhi's old friend and would have done the same. But i did think it was kinda sweet how he became, that just means he cares.((But still a jerk))
I was so happy when they went on a date though. Kaoru is such a good brother >.

I typically avoid situations where I don't know many of the people at a gathering but I can think of two situations where it's hard to avoid.
1) When you visit a friend who goes to a college different from yours and they want you to hang out with their friends.
2)When you're dating someone, and that person invites you to meet their friends.

With the anime jumping straight to the chapter on Kyouya in the next episode, I have a funny feeling that the school cultural festival chapters of the manga will be dealt with in the last few episodes of the anime.
In a way, it would makes sense, since the cultural festival chapters will delve into Kyouya and Tamaki's family background and be a nice finish to the anime (if of course, the anime doesn't extend beyond 26 episodes).

July 20, 2006 | Yumegari wrote:

Hmm... don't you think that the anime is bad to watch for children? Everyone should know that using a cell phone standing under a tree during a storm puts you in a danger of being struck...

Anyway, I like how they emphasized the difference between the twins. Now I'm not sure if I still like Hikaru that much and if he really suits Haruhi. He acted kinda mean in this ep... hope this incident thought him a little bit how to treat other people.

It's kind of funny though. If I'm invited to my friend's (a close friend) birthday party, I'll be stuck on the corner of the room and end up seeing my friend's laughing or enjoying times with his/her friends I don't know. Maybe just enjoy that time in the corner (I can't say I'll be able to enjoy it) until my friend came in sauntering me and telling me to join in (typical of birthday boy/girl, introducing to others and then wander off again). The funny thing is, there will always be another someone in the corner too lol

I really love this episode X3 Much character development on Hikaru/Kaoru part and Haruhi's reaction to another side of their characters (she usually have that indifferent expression in the host club..)

Now that you mentioned it about the whole friend/jealousy part, I would kinda feel jealous or left out if I see my best friend hanging out with someone new and get along with each other very well. I never thought of that Hikaru's reaction is something I have felt before. Thanks for pointing it out.

Um, besides that, Hikaru's attitude--bad as it was--didn't really bother me that much in this episode. I dunno, a little bit when he was being mean to Arai (right?), but Haruhi got him with that slap. Hee.

And yeah, I know what you mean. I used to go to birthday parties for friends that, now I really don't think we were good enough friends, but, eh, and I'd always end up being the quiet person and the one who hardly said a word. Even if some didn't know each other, they got along quickly enough. I'd always feel left-out and uncomfortable. Now I feel that I have closer friends that I wouldn't feel so bad if I went to their parties. :>

As to the feeling left out thing, i know how it feels and how it feels in reverse, like when u just meet a new friend and start to get to them them and everytime is going really well, but one of ur current friends (know for about 2 years, not one of those really really good best friend just a friend) barges in and tries to get to know them as well by braging/barging etc. in the middle of a conversation. Maybe it's just jealousity but it really P.O. u inside.

About the party thing. I was once invited to a party of a person who I only met once before, and everyone else was unknown to me. -_-. Fortunately, the host of the party was pretty considerate and had me by his side throughout, and sat with me for the movie too. But.. heh.. it was pretty awkward. I was suprised Hikaru could be so ill-tempered, he's usually in comical situations. I defenitly see the twins in a new light now.

As for the situation about not knowning anyone at a party, thats happened to me a few times. I am kind of a shy person and worry about insulting people whenever I speak.
I was once invited to a party by the friend of my friend. But my best friend was also invited so I knew I'd be alright...but she didn't make it! And so like everyone else: I sat in a corner and just didn't talk a lot. Although I wanted to join in on the fun. I thought,"should I try to be cool or funny?" Finally I just decieded to be myself. And as it turns out, that was the best thing to do. I said what I wanted to with confidence. I invited myself to conversations but I was polite and didn't change the topic. Pretty soon, people were coming up to me and talking and were laughing at my jokes.
Later on when I visited the school they went to, a lot of the people there remembered my name and hugged me!
So thats what I do, just be myself. I advise everyone to try it next time,

I would say that the whole being invited to meet friends of a friends thing isn't really the correct analogy here because Hikaru at the very least is with his brother and is among other host club members who he seems to get along with(or at the least doesn't mind them). If anything that would correctly apply to Arai since he is on his own and the only person he knows is Haruhi, the rest are just friends of a friend. So really if anyone has reason to feel uncomfortable/jealous etc... then it's him.

I thought his behaviour was extremely childish and he got a reaction from Haruhi which was no less than he deserved. I actually cheered at that point. Not to mention that Haruhi had already told him before she slapped him that he was acting like a jerk. Did he pay attention? No. He carried on as he saw fit. I'm mainly talking about the scene's inside that holiday house or whatever it's called.

I'm really very dissapointed.

When I first started watching Host Club I was amazed with it. It was a manga that kept being funny, that made fun of itself. . .and most amazingly it had a female heroine I didn't hate! In fact, I went so far as to like her.

That all changed in this episode/tankouban. To me, the anime/manga killed itself by trying to be serious. The little build-ups to this were bad enough. . . but now. . . I don't think I can continue watching Ouran Host Club because it disapointed me so much. :,C

Haha, i can imagine people's first dates to be pretty edgey, and comical that Haruhi was more of an escort than he was. Overall, i loved this episode and i'm glad that i got to see this serious part in Ouran Hostclub, sometimes comedy isn't everything.
