Cinempire, a French-based movie site has posted several shots of Mushishi Live Action movie. The first thing that surprised me is the revelation that Aoi Yuu, the actress who plays live action Hanamoto Hagumi in Honey and Clover movie, gets to play the role of Tanyuu, the girl with the Mushi inside her body. The rest of the cast include Joe Odagiri, who plays Ginko, and Esumi Makiko, who I assume will play the role of Nui. At a first glance, Joe Odagiri looks quite strange as Ginko. I think the white hair doesn't suit him that well. Oh well, I hope he'll look a bit better on screen and can act well. The rest of the cast don't look too bad, I suppose. Although I thought Kourou (the guy who wants to find rainbow serpent) is supposed to be younger-looking than the guy they end up casting for the film. Anyway, for more stills, go to Cinempire's site. Mushishi Live Action is directed by Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira) premiere this September at the Venice Film Festival.

Aoi Yuu was the first thing I noticed. I said "wow" outloud the moment I saw it.
Mushishi was always a show that I had to force myself to press play but once it started I would be immersed until the end.
Same here. Aoi Yuu is smokin' hot, in the screen caps you have posted. I'd love to see the movie myself, not only because I love Mushishi, but because she makes a great Tanyuu.
ZOMG! NO WAY! A Mushishi Live Action movie??? What's wrong these days?? Did I do something good so I deserve this?? xD Oh, thx SOOO much for the info and the screencaps! *totally looking forward to this movie
I wonder if all these anime to movie transition are successful? Most anime fans get dissappointed by the movie but they keep on making them. I guess Nana was an exception but I highly doubt Mushishi will be as popular as others.
I assume this is just 'the next step' in Japan's film industry. After adapting various novels (ie.Ima, Ai ni Yukimasu), they now want to adapt manga/anime series. If you think about it, Japan's film industry is not that different from Hollywood in that they tend to look for existing stories that they can turn into film.
I'm not sure if they're making money out of these adaptations though. So far I only like Death Note the movie and some aspects of Nana and Honey and Clover live action movies. Having said that Mushishi movie has the famous Katsuhiro Otomo of Akira fame in the directorial role, so that on its own probably attract a few anime fans.
I can't wait to see this when it makes its North American premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Mushishi is being screened under the name "The Bug Master".
Just shocked at everything. Especially the fact that someone like Odagiri Joe was casted as Ginko. That is wrong on so many levels, I don't know where to start.
Why do pretty much all live-action adaptations have to disappoint =___= But I'm looking forward to seeing Aoi Yuu.
And Nui (?) is looking very much like the "original". I'm kinda wishing that they use the anime narrator's voice, since it's one of the best parts about the series.
Awww man, theres gonna be a movie now, i should really get around to watching the anime, it's been on my list for months.
is it just me or does it seem like Ginko's wearing traditional japanese garb instead of the eddie bauer fare he's used to?
not sure i agree with this decision... : |
He's wearing a western shirt and pants, but it looks like film makers are going for gritty realism here. A man who travels as far and as long as Ginko does wouldn't really look as clean and stylish as he does in the anime, and his clothes are likely handmade, and not perfectly machine-made.
I don't know much about Odagiri Joe as an actor, and my first reaction was "he doesn't look all that much like Ginko." But I was reading chapter 4 of the manga wherein Ginko displays evidence of lack of shaving, and by comparison to the character design there, he does look something like Ginko (yay). I have hope for the series; the costumes and setttings look rich in colour and design. ^ ^
wow, it looks wonderfully shot!! I hope to see this somehow...
Thanks for the screenshots.
Oh my goodness, I will stick to the anime forever. Ginko being acted out is so wrong!!!! Totally spoil my impression of Ginko. Sorry to any fans of the actor of Ginko. My personal view is that anime and real life movie should never mix, they just don't fill in for each other.
oooh my gooosh...!! I was just thinking recently 'hmm..they've done nana...honey and clover..deathnote...what next....gasp what about mushishi??' cos I adore the anime and I'm sure it also has its own little legion of loyal fans..well what do ya know! but I'm praying they don't ruin it. Puuuhlease. Very curious as to how they' gonna go round about it cos the anime's cut into so many diff. tales....and Joe Odagiri acting as Ginko?? that's so off cos Ginko's not meant to be sexy! XD can you tell I'm flippin' excited about this??!
I dunno if anyone is going to read this but whatever.
I saw the movie last night at the Toronto International Film Festival and came away extremely disappointed (I'm a huge fan of the anime). Granted, the producer mentioned that it was essentially a "rough cut" but I don't think any amount of editing can save the film. The actors did a decent job but the pacing was just so, so poor. If you think the anime has a slow pace, just wait until you see this lol.
*spoiler starts*
The film tells the story of Ginko, his origin as a Mushishi and how he helps people with their Mushi related problems. It takes half a dozen or so of the stories from the anime/manga (catching the inverted rainbow, the sound eating Mushi to name a couple) and I guess the main plot, if you can call it that, is Yoki's/Ginko's relationship with Nui. It would have been better if the film only dealt with one type of Mushi and focus on that (a la a single episode of the anime).
The only decent part of the film is when Tanyuu seals all those Mushi back into the scrolls. The Mushi themselves were nicely rendered with that ghost like quality found in the anime. I don't remember too much about the music but it's pretty much what you would hear in the anime.
The ending was the worst I've ever seen. A total WTF.
*spoiler ends*
Not recommended.
Totally agrees with Jess ! "anime and real life movie should never mix, they just don't fill in for each other"!! indeed so true!
Jason: Thanks, i couldnt find any other reviews of the movie. It's a shame that they failed to accurately translate the manga/anime into a live action movie. I wasn't expecting it to be good, but i had my fingers crossed.
Get real. Titles like basalisk, mushishi, nana and death note were NOT anime first. What different does it make if someone wants to adpat the source into any medium? If its as good as Ryuhei Kitamura's adaptations of manga like Sky HIgh and Alive then it will be awesome.
OMG, i need, i want this movie, i love the anime.
guys, i need your help. I got the movie, but i couldn't get the eng-sub. Anybody can help me to find the sub? thx b4
I got S^M raw mushishi live action movie . But there isint eng sub. there is only korean and chinese subs. İf you find english sub ...
I just finished watching this film and simply loved it. I would recommend people to make a pass on this film if you're searching for hear-racing themes.
I did not watch the anime nor read the manga nad glad i hadn't because it would have spoiled too much or make me have several expectations.
People have been complaining about it being not having an accurate adaption to the manga/anime. Mushishi the movie is an adaption therefore it doesn't need to be as accurate as possible, the movie itself did a great job to what i think.
Like jason said the ending was a great wtf.
I didn't get it at all, but before the ending everything was simply AMAZING!
PPLEASEE WHER ETO FIND IT *cry* !! i got goose bumps only by reading post s and watching screen shots
Even had I not read the manga or watched the anime, I wouldn't have liked the movie.
I haven't seen such poor acting and shoddy dialogue in a long time.
The movie can be found with english subs at:
