Midori no Hibi ep.13

June 26, 2004 | 34 Comments

Yes! What a perfect ending for a good series. Please don't kill me! :P I can't help but feeling happy about the ending. I watched this series with certain expectations and that expectations were precisely met and I am sorry if it wasn't for some of you, I really do. This episode also confirms once and for all that a second season is out of the question. Not surprising really, especially after the previous episode. The manga itself is near to the point of completion so it'll be interesting to see how that one resolves the storyline as well. Anyway, unfortunately this means my credit card is going to suffer more damage since I'll definitely order the R2 DVD over the net. Oh well, I really like the story and the offer of getting a soundtrack on top of the DVD is an incentive.

The story continues from the previous episode without even an opening to show. Anyway, Seiji is surprised to hear Ayase's confession. Never the less, he gently pushes her away from him and tells her that he's sorry. Ayase wonders if he has someone else that he likes. Seiji denies it but mentioned how normally he's always with this person and he feels annoyed now that person is not here anymore. Ayase then tells him outright that it means he likes this person, much to Seiji's surprise. Ayase also adds that because he didn't understand it, she probably left. Seiji tries to deny it but he then remembers Midori telling him how no matter how long she stays on his hand, he never sees her as anything but his right hand and realises that maybe Ayase is right after all. After a couple minutes of uncomfortable silence, Ayase tells Seiji that she's glad that at least things are clear for her now and she accepts the fact that Seiji doesn't see her that way.

Ayase then picks up her items and tells Seiji that everything is going to be okay. Seeing her kindness, Seiji can't say anything else apart from the fact that he's really sorry. Back to Midori, she's seen looking out of her window with blank, vacant eyes. She, however, snaps out of it when her maid comes into her room. It doesn't take long before she receives a visit from Kouta who's finally informed of her status by Midori's mother. Kouta, however, is surprised when Midori's mother tells him that Midori can't remember what happened while she was asleep. Kouta at first looks as if he wants to tell Midori the truth but then he decides to can the idea. Midori, however, believes that the place that she went to was not only enjoyable but also made her happy. Having said that, Midori does regret that her unconscious state have caused her mother to be stressed out. Her mother tells Midori that the important thing is that she is now here.

Back to Seiji, he looks miserable when he returns to his home especially when he realises that he's now gotten used to using his left hand and when he finds objects that Midori used to have around the house. His sadness, however, is temporarily gone when he opens the sliding door to his room and finds a creepy looking eye staring at him. Now, unless you have seen Ringu or Ju-On, you'll probably laugh at the comedy but not really understand the significance of the eyes. In both films, seeing the eyes of the ghost is pretty much one-way trip to death or mortification. Judging from Seiji's reaction, he, at the very least, was mortified. This is also a rather good nod to one of the manga's side gags, which can be found in the jacket of the Japanese tankouban Vol.6. Anyway, it doesn't take long for Seiji to figure out that this was all the work of his sister.

It turns out Rin has arrived to bring some steamed pork buns for Midori. Hmm, I'm suddenly hungry. Rin, however, is surprised when she finds out that Midori is no longer on Seiji's right hand. So as usual, she ends up beating her brother up to get some information out of him. Rin wonders if Seiji is okay with Midori returning. When Seiji acts wishy-washy like usual, Rin ends up giving him one hell of a punch and urge him to go after her. Rin then takes the pork buns away, telling Seiji that she didn't bring it for him but for Midori. Ouch. Feeling miserable with everything that has happened thus far, Seiji decides to retreat to his room and ends up finding Midori's little diary next to the sweater that she knitted for him. Upon reading the diary, Seiji finally understands the sort of things that goes through Midori's mind while she was on his right hand.

The next day, Seiji tries to gather his courage to talk to the real Midori but he can't seem to even push the intercom button. Before he left, however, Kouta arrives on the scene and lets him know that Midori has return to her real body and everyone is glad about it. Seiji then produces Midori's diary and tries to give it to Kouta so he can return it to Midori. Kouta, however, tells Seiji know that Midori has lost all memory of her days with Seiji. Upon hearing this, Seiji realises that maybe giving the diary back to Midori may not be such a good idea. Because of this, he tries to convince himself and Kouta that maybe Midori will be better off to not remember what happened in the past. Meanwhile, Midori and her maid decides to take a stroll to the balcony and in the process, Midori sees Seiji in front of her house. Midori can't seem to remember of her days with Seiji and yet, she also can't help herself from staring at Seiji's picture.

Midori wonders why her feelings tell her that there is something important when she saw Seiji. Midori's mother then enters Midori rooms and immediately panics when seeing Midori in a position as if she's about to fall into her coma again. Midori asks her mother why she feels so lonely right now. She feels as if she wants to return to that time when she felt happy in her dream once again. Midori then begins to close her eyes again. Her mother, however, tells Midori not to do it because no matter how much she wish it to be, that place is not real. Until Midori can change her real self, she'll never obtain true happiness. Upon hearing her mother's words, Midori snaps back to reality and runs from her room to chase Seiji. Midori's mother and maid are obviously afraid of Midori's strange behaviour and try to stop her. Kouta, however, asks them to let Midori go and deal with her problem on her own.

Midori is then seen running around the city to find Seiji. Along the way, she tries hard to convince herself that this time she'll tell Seiji her real feelings. However, in order to do this, she has to find Seiji first and she can't seem to find him anywhere. Even after Midori visits the place that Seiji normally visited, she still can't find him. Meanwhile, Seiji is seen sulking and makes his way to the park that he normally visits with Midori. When he arrives in the park, he overhears a bunch of kids ordering Chocolate-Banana ice cream and is immediately reminded of Midori because of it. Seiji then ends up sitting near the fountain at the park and reads Midori's diary. It seems that the entire events have happened during the period of 3 months according to the diary. Midori apparently started to become Seiji's right hand ever since October the 5th.

It was also mentioned that the Onsen trip happened 15 days later on October the 20th. While Midori becoming sick and Seiji had to do the 100 times pull up happened consecutively on November 5th and 6th. Seiji then reads the diary up to the part where he and Midori gets to see the water fountain that night on November the 20th. Yes, it is obvious that the writers didn't bother to spend much time when figuring out these days. Anyway, Midori eventually arrives at the same fountain park but unfortunately Seiji is no longer there. Disappointed with this, she decides to stay around to enjoy the view. Not long after this though, Seiji returns to the park. It looks like he simply goes away to get some drink from a vending machine. Midori then tries to gather all of her courage and proceeds to approach Seiji. Seiji is surprised to see Midori standing in front of him but can't seem to say anything either.

Just when it looks like things are going nowhere, Midori finally manages to tell Seiji that she really likes him. Seiji in reply tells her that he already know. Midori is surprised to hear this. Seiji, however, decides not to tell her that he already knew her beforehand and instead simply tells Midori that he's also been watching her. Not long after this, the two gets to enjoy the city view while snowflakes fall from the sky and Midori can be heard writing in her diary that on December the 20th, she gets to finally admit her feelings for Seiji. The episode then shows Midori waking up from her sleep to go to school only this time she looks more confident that she used to be. The series then ends by playing the opening song while showing Seiji and Midori walking together as a couple while their friends/family/enemy look on from afar.

Impression:

Well, I personally prefer this version of Ayase's rejection than the one in the manga. This one feels less harsh and Ayase seems to take it better because she can see that Seiji is unhappy without this person that he's been talking about. It's probably a clich but when you really do love someone, you can still be happy from seeing the object of your affection being happy with another person. This is what makes Ayase is different from someone like say, Mari of Kono Mini. The writers did a good job of making her likeable that even though I don't root for her, I felt really bad when she got rejected in this version and even more so in the manga. I supposed it's kind of ironic that at the end of the day, Seiji ends up rejecting a girl with a rather similar lines that all other girls who rejected him have used: "I have someone else right now". The difference is Seiji is being honest and at the end of the day, it's not about winning or losing but rather which person that Seiji prefers the most.

At any rate, both the anime and the manga seems to suggest that you can't just approach a person and hope that the person will like you back. Being close to that person, spending time with that person and generally allow both parties to know each other's weaknesses and strength is what makes a relationship. So in this regards then yes, Midori did get a lucky break because even though Ayase is in the same class as Seiji, she never got the chance to know him as well as Midori did. At the same time, it's not as if Midori did nothing while she was on Seiji's right hand. Midori was a good influence on Seiji. She acted as a restrain for him in ways that I don't think Ayase can provide. Top that with the fact that at the end of the day, her memory was reset and Seiji has no courage to approach her real life version. This means that the two end up getting together at the end partly because Midori finally makes the step to be a bit courageous.

That is why I disagree with those who said the right hand Midori is a different Midori. I think the right hand Midori is the emotional strength that the real Midori has but has not surfaced until that last moment with Seiji. At the end of this episode, you can see that this confident version of Midori finally starts to show up in the real Midori. At any rate, I'm glad with the ending as well as the majority of this series. Despite the tendency for the series to chop up the manga chapters, I am glad that at least the series manages to create a good ending out of a manga series that is not completed yet. I also like the character design even though it's not as detail or as good as the manga. The soundtrack is very good and I can't wait to get my own copy of the CD when the DVD arrives. I hope it'll at least include the opening, ending, and the music box song that plays at the start of the first episode.

Argh, I got weak and read your entry before watching the anime. Now, I have to suffer because of the spoilers. T_T

It seems to me that the finale is pretty decent considering the manga has not been finished yet. I was sort-of dreading a KareKano non-ending. Thankfully, all's been resolved except for my poor Ayase was rejected. At least she graciously accepted Seiji's decision.

I understand where you're coming from with the right-hand Midori as her inner strength. However, the anime's biggest flaw was not being able clearly express this perspective to the viewers. Well, might see her character in a different light once I read the manga. (^_^)

I agree that the anime's short length made it impossible for them to expand on a couple of things. As I mentioned before, I actually have some problem with the anime writers' decision to cut short the majority of everyone else's story.

In the manga, almost all of the supporting characters have their own arcs. In the anime, they're merely tools to get Seiji and Midori to their destination. So yes, I think the writers did a good job with the ending to the point that I momentarily forget about the flaws of the anime.

To be frank, I don't particularly like this ending >_< ... it's because I don't like the fact that Midori lost her memory of the days she spent together with Seiji. I was hoping that the diary itself was supposed to be the hints that would help Midori gain the memory back even when she had lost them when she woke up. Also, I have to agree that the series should have been slightly longer. It's a shame there's not even time for a few interesting characters (like the American girl) and Kouta's story's completely twisted x_x ... I still think animating this series in this way is a wrong decision. However, it'll be okay for those who haven't read the manga I guess.

June 28, 2004 | Garten wrote:

Well, she did write something for the 20th December entry of her diary. So I guess it's left to the viewers to figure out if this is the same diary that she was using while she was in Seiji's right hand or a brand new one.

It's sad that she lost her memories but you know... *pumps fist in the air* yessss I am a Midori X Seiji fan here - so happy that this anime had a good and happy ending where they are together :)

Aw shucks... I read your entry before watching the final episode. I cant help it! My computer takes FOREVER to download. I can imagine every single scene from just your description, and I'm completely touched by the ending. A little cliche, but a good closing. *happy* I don't understand why you say there'd be a second series though.

I'm sorry about the very spoilery nature of my post. I'm going to try to change that in the future, especially since it takes such a long time to write these full summaries.

Hmm, I don't think I ever said that there'll be a second season. I said that a second season is out of the question. Well, I was hoping for one before this episode but I think I'll have to be happy with this ending.

When did Seiji ever say he also liked Midori? I didn't hear him say it O.o Well, maybe he was implying that by saying "I've looked at you, well, I didn't have a choice but look at you" ...but that's not a confession right? He just tries to explain how he would know she liked him all this time. He never said "I like you, Midori". Wasn't that supposed to be the most important part of the last episode?
And if he did say it, could you tell me where because I can't recall hearing Seiji say it. We know he loves her but still, he should've said it ;_;

June 28, 2004 | Garten wrote:

Ah, sorry. I actually confuses the line with the manga because I didn't have the anime in front of me when I typed this. I've fixed it now. But if you really want to see him telling her outright that he loves her, I'm afraid you have to read Days 82 of the manga. :) He even says that she is the one whom he considers as a 'girlfriend' there.

Don't feel guilty about liking the ending! I liked it as well. I seriously don't understand what other people expected when they started watching this show.
The show is named after Midori and it's a romantic comedy. Did anyone seriously expecting another KimiNozo?

(Spanish boy here and the first time I write so excuse me if I make some mistakes :P) I really liked this show and the ending. I'm a bit tired of samurais, main characters deaths and magical girls. And the show was so funny and fresh that I've forgotten everything else. I also think that two or three more episodes would have been great but, though Seiji doesn't say it, I think it's pretty clear that they end up happily together ^^. Just looking forward for the manga edition in Spain.Seeya

well to be honest. midori days is one of the best animes i have ever seen, usually i like animes that have all the fightings and heroic thingis but never knew a romantic anime such as this one would take away my heart....
i really really loved the show...alas only 13 episodes...they should have streached it to some 25-30 episodes at least... even then midori days endded up very nicely...
i think telling midori that he also liked her or giving her a hug to end up things with more romance was not that important... sitting in the park, looking at his hand and saying that she could at least say goodbye to him with pains in his tone and then afterwards looking at midori while they were face to face and just saying 'i know it' when midori finally said the precious three words to him that she had been longing for years...makes it clear that seiji's love for midori is pure...

why can not be there any season 2 for midori days...well take a wild guess, midori put a lot of effort in writing that diary that covers days from....as from the anime.. it is 5th october to december the 18th (while she was replacing seiji's devil's right hand....) they can make some episodes (some sort of reminsce) that includes days in between many happenings as just if seiji is sharing the moments with midori... who forgot everything being the right hand.... the diary will be the source and past happenings will come to seiji's memory and he will gladly share it with his beloved midori...

at the same time.... we, all the fans of this unimaginably awesome anime will have the opportunity to see midori and seiji again in TV...

by the way, we have animax south asia airing this anime and they changed the starting and ending themes.... can anyone here please tell me what was shown in the ending theme of the last episode (episode 13).... the TV channel did not show it.... thanks to Garten i know that they are now a couple and seeing the picture that they are sitting side by side makes me feel so happy... what else was shown while ending... (just after midori gives a confident smile in abrand new day....where the episode ends).... please let me know....
