Hm. Rarely has an Otome episode left me with so many conflicting emotions. There are several issues which rubbed me the wrong way, and yet some other parts are filling me with hope that the finish will be stronger than the last two slightly lackluster installments. I guess all things considered, the good and the bad balance out for an overall (o) rating, but this isn't too impressive for a drama show which is supposed to pull out its biggest guns during this time. Anyway, let's hope for the best.
Episode Rating: o

The AAAA (Atrocious Arika Angsting Arc)
Let me be blunt here: This was horrible. Yes, it had to happen, her naivete was supposed to be confronted with the harsh reality, causing her to learn a few things and mature. But why this exceptionally annoying execution? How can a character whose defining trait has always been resilience towards obstacles and hardship be displayed as thrown off in such a haphazard way? She's supposed to be around 15 years by now, but she felt like barely 12. It's not logical to assume that she would consider Erstin's death to be her own fault (it wasn't) or even related to Otome powers (it wasn't either), so this whole "I never want to be an Otome anymore" failed to convince me. Also, her readiness to snap to tten-SHUN around Midori after 2-3 days maximum makes no sense either, because Midori was the one who ordered her warriors to KILL the helpless Arika in front of her - all forgotten already?
I don't object to Mashiro being the levelheaded one for a change. SHE has a reason to behave the way she does, especially because the Aswad people demonstrate towards Midori the kind of respect and obedience Mashiro was always longing for but never got. I also respect that she realized Aoi's sacrifice for what it was and draws determination out of it to do a better job from now on in order to HONOR Aoi. Way to go, girl!
The Arika whining inside the monster was the low point of the show so far, I wanted to throw something at the monitor to be honest. This is supposed to be the resolution to this kiddy crisis? Mashiro needs to literally force Arika to activate the robe again, as dictated by the circumstances? And once she does, all is forgotten and Arika giggles again? Dear screenwriter, please never do this again. NEVER.
Finally, Midori's lesson about power in life. I can only agree with Takumi here: The fact that any of this proved to be news to Arika only points out how messed up the Garderobe Otome training must have been. Because obviously the little girls aren't really ready for this kind of responsibility. And obviously Garderobe didn't properly prepare them for it.
Little side note: I considered it interesting to watch Fia's reaction to Argoss' order. It seemed to me as if her reluctance was not born out of fear of retaliation, but rather because she felt some pity with the Aswad people, before her sense of duty superseded her conscience again. I wonder if this will ever turn out to become relevant again.
Nina's anguish
I can't help but feel pity for her. She's fighting a losing battle for Sergey's romantic love, but the more she tries to make her point and make him look at her, the more the chasm grows. She's despairing over being unable to leave her "cute daughter" role in Sergey's eyes, and she never will. But unlike before, she's slowly beginning to realize it, and the pain is tearing her apart.
Nina's past and the capsule
Excellent catch by Garten, I had completely missed the capsule until he mentioned it. However, let's keep in mind that the time is off - Nina is obviously 5/6 years old in the flashback, but the capsule is just big enough to hold a baby. Therefore, if Nina indeed HAD been in the capsule, it must have been several years in the past. I don't quite know the significance of showing it in the flashback, but I'm sure there is one. Any takers?
Sergey's demise
The fact that Rena is already dead pretty much seals his doom in my eyes. I don't see any happy conclusion which might be possible for him any more, and once he learns that it's Rena in the breeding tank, he will most certainly tilt. I'm always open for surprises, but I can't picture him alive in the final episode. He might however become the sword which slashes Nina's link to Nagi - so I could imagine his death to cause Nina to reconsider and break free again. Let's see where this one goes.
Tomoe's move and the future of ShizNat
We're getting into a highly controversial issue here ;) ... I'll present my thoughts on the incident by going through the scene step by step, with some comments on how I interpret them. I do recognize, that just like all other opinions of mine, there are perfectly valid other interpretations. Nevertheless, this is the one I consider most logical and fitting.
To begin with the conclusion: This episode convinced me that for the very first time in the Mai Universe, the show will end with requited feelings for Shizuru and Natsuki. The way I see it, Sunrise will eventually give the ShizNat fans their due, and the show will end with a clear and definite Shizuru-Natsuki linkup. Now why do I think so? Let's go through the scene, play-by-play:
Tomoe with three other new valkyries enter Shizuru's cell. Proudly, Tomoe tosses back her hair, revealing her new earring which looks very much like a Schwarz crystal. Shizuru shrieks up at this sight, eyes full of concern.
Scene change. Unshackled again, Shizuru is sitting on Mashiro's bed in Garderobe. Looking around, she notices that all windows are obstructed with iron bars, so it's clear that she's still caged - only the interior has become more comfortable - now including a bed.
Tomoe has obviously signed up with the enemy and is around, standing before her. First thing, a concerned Shizuru wants to know what happened to Natsuki. Slightly irritated, Tomoe delivers a vicious blow by lying that "we" have captured her, confirming her treason and causing Shizuru's expression to freeze in shock. Then, Tomoe makes her move and makes clear that maybe, if she works hard again, she might be rewarded. Shizuru knows what Tomoe means (IMHO it's "I did something for you already, I might be able to do something for Natsuki aswell), but after an unsmiling veiled-sarcastic "Well, then you better work hard", Tomoe leans in, bringing her face closer, with obvious intent. She demands a different kind of "reward" from Shizuru.
Second key scene: Just before she was kissed, Shizuru's thoughts wander to Natsuki, who is shown in Airies, and Natsuki is suddenly shrieking up. This kind of "connected by fate" details are what convince me that this time, Shizuru's feelings will be openly requited in the end.
Shizuru shows a slight shock when Tomoe doesn't hesitate and goes for the lips. But Shizuru's eyes are wandering, she lets it happen, but doesn't seem to reciprocate. The famous intertwined-hands screenshot show that Tomoe is grabbing Shizuru's hand, intertwining fingers, but Shizuru's hand remains limp. Rustling cloth sounds of disrobing. End of scene.
The whole scene is fairly easy to read IMHO. Shizuru is worried sick about Natsuki and fears that if she openly denies Tomoe, she will endanger Natsuki, who she believes to be a captive. Under these circumstances, I wouldn't put it past Shizuru to lead Tomoe on in order to gain extra information and develop new options for her - because Tomoe's infatuation with her is about the only asset left to Shizuru to possibly exploit. That wasn't the flirt Shizuru playing around with kids, she was lacking all indications of cheery playfulness. This was the desperate Shizuru hedging her bets, trying not to endanger Natsuki, and resenting every bit of it.
Let's keep in mind: Shizuru was always consistently characterized as a "for Natsuki, whatever it takes" person. And also, she was consistently aching because Natsuki never seemed to return her feelings the same clear way. I expect Shizuru to stick with the program and go to extremes to uphold her priority goal. And if this means allowing Tomoe to bed her in order to play the final card left to Shizuru - exploiting Tomoe's obvious infatuation - I'd consider it very in-character for her to do it.
Some general remarks on the Otome timeline
I'm a bit confused, to be honest. The arc development feels "off" if they plan to finish the show by episode 26, as the reliable TV guides indicate. In the last 6 more eps, several important characters seem to have to still be introduced: Mai, and the other two Otomes from the presumably-pillar shot from the OP. Nao needs her Meister robe too. Takumi needs to return to save the day. And all of this in meager 6 eps? It would feel like an option if the show was 39 or even 52 episodes, but... this much in the last ones? I hope they won't exchange a highly controversial reset-style ending with a highly controversial deus-ex-machina ending this time, because with the exception of the last 1-2 episodes I thought that the storyboard was very convincing and absolutely allowed for a full and proper conclusion. Now I'm growing a little bit tense...
The ED worries me. It really does. Especially since it's becoming more and more obvious that we're not going to get a new one till the end. If they do go for a happy-go-lucky kind of ending, I hope that they will at least be able to properly conclude the drama aspects before that.
Keeping my fingers crossed.
Garten's Impression:
There are several interesting points raised within this episode. First of all, the identity of the princess as well as Rena's daughter is still a big mystery. Judging from Nina's flashback, however, it is likely that she was the baby that got sent away inside the capsule. I assume, however, that Sergey did notice the capsule but didn't make the association. That, however, does not mean that she's necessarily the princess. At the moment I'll guess that Nina is Rena's daughter, Mashiro is the real princess, and Arika is actually something entirely different. The discussion about Otome power sounds kind of cliche and elementary level though. Yeah, everyone knows that power is neither good or bad although I think that it has the ability to corrupt a person. Speaking of power, I wonder if Nagi really wants to obtain the Harmonium power because he wants to return technology to people or if he wants to use it for his own needs?
The Tomoe and Shizuru incident was a shocker mostly because I didn't expect Shizuru to go along with Tomoe's desire. I was expecting her to reject Tomoe because she's an adult and Tomoe is still young. I am not sure what Shizuru has in mind but once Tomoe finds out that Shizuru is only stringing her along, I think there'll be Hell to pay. Moving along to other characters, I like the way the series has develop Mashiro. After the incident with Aoi, it seems she has become stronger person. I think with a little example from Midori, she'll become a good leader for Windbloom. Anyway, the preview for next week's episode is also equally interesting. It seems to show an evil looking Chie, Tomoe blushing, and most importantly, the appearance of the real Mikoto. The preview also shows Mashiro and Midori shaking hands, suggesting alliance between Aswad and Windbloom. However, with no people to rule, does Mashiro have the power to make such decision?
:O
Shizuru has been Shizuru'd by Tomoe!!!
Looks like an interesting episode in more ways than one.
And... haha, wow, the "real queen of Windbloom" quest just gets weirder and weirder.
Nice catch, Garten, but we need to be careful with the conclusions here. Nina's age is all wrong. We know that Sergey picked up Nina 10 years ago, but the raid on Windbloom castle was 14-15 years ago - the capsule also had to carry a baby, not a 5-year old girl.
Hah! Shizuru is molested by Tomoe! I'd like to know what those Shizuru fans have to say now. Back then they say it's okay for her to do this kind of action to Natsuki. But now, the role has been reversed thanks to Tomoe.
hmm, didn't he say he picked her up 6 years ago?
I think the girl in the capsule was Nina. The question is, was that girl Rena's daughter or the Queen's daughter. My opinion is that Nina is actually Rena's daughter. That will be a delicious irony because Nina has always been jealous of Rena. Imagine how she'll look if she finds out that she's actually her daughter.
Mentar: i think the timing is fine. They might have kept the capsule as a good storage thing for 4 years or so. Nina is the same age as Arika and Mashiro... which is really what matters.
Valatiel: Nina has the queen's eyes. The Kings hair. Arika has rena's eyes, midori's hair... and mashiro... is ... i hope we'll find out.
I'm actually looking forward to the next episode more. Looks like Mikoto (not the cat) and Nina are going to fight it out.
OMG, is that the real Mikoto on the preview for 16? And what's with the cat figurines? Does that mean she's been hiding as the fat Mikoto all of these times?
After seeing this, I think there is still hope for Mai's appearance.
Now that Shizuru is with Tomoe, I hope Natsuki will be with Mai. Please, please, please.
Am I the only one who's disturbed by the whole TomoeXShizuru thingy? Tomoe is a minor. Shizuru should have push her away instead of going along with the seduction. It makes my skin crawl just thinking about it. I'm not sure if I'm more disgusted with Tomoe or with Shizuru.
James, Natsuki x Mai is too much for the viewers to handle.
>>Mentar: i think the timing is fine. They might have kept the capsule as a good storage thing for 4 years or so. Nina is the same age as Arika and Mashiro... which is really what matters.
Now the question is, assuming that Nina really did arrive via capsule, and that the people there didn't pick it up somewhere--if Nina has the capsule, why does Arika have the pendant?
Also, just noticed a discrepancy back from the "Birthday" episode. Sergay tells Nina that it was six years ago that they met--except that the Nina in this episode's flashback is most definitely not nine years old, and looks more like she's four or five.
Lousy writing, considering that we've seen a couple of flashbacks of child Nina, who doesn't look anywhere near nine in them? Or something else?
Haha!! I thought that was Erstin at the 2nd to last pic until I scrolled down a little and saw the water tank. And Mikoto whoa!
Man, when Sergay finds out the identity of the otome Smith is using...
Interesting clue for Nina's case for the throne. However the capsule had a baby in it and for such an obvious clue to survive 4-5 years without attracting undue attnetion is somewhat unbelieveable. Then again the capsule might have been mass produced. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
I guess what takes the cake in this ep is Tomoe x Shizuru though I highly suspect that Shizuru is simply using Tomoe's feelings to her own advantage. In her previous incarnation she wasn't above killing and blackmailing to be with Natsuki I don't think she has qualms against doing what she did just then either.
I wonder if Chie will be seduced by the dark side. After all Tomoe still retained some of her former self before she took the crystal. As for the lost cause that is Sergay what is he going to do when he finds out that Rena's being abused in death? Hopefully we'll see if he can walk the walk.
Guys, I think some of you are misreading the Tomoe x Shizuru scene a bit. This is the situation: For Shizuru, Tomoe has openly sided with the enemy. She has removed Shizuru from her prison, but the bedroom of Mashiro is now quite remodeled, the windows covered with cage-like iron bars. So, she's obviously still imprisoned. Tomoe tells her that Natsuki has been caught and moves in on her to demand her "reward". Shizuru realizes what Tomoe really wants and shares a brief "connection" flashback shot with Natsuki.
Now what?
If Shizuru resists now and pushes off Tomoe, she'll endanger Natsuki with Tomoe's wrath. Playing along and "letting it happen" is the only way for her she can hope to make progress, by fooling Tomoe. Besides, unlike the teasy-flirty Shizuru of old, she's almost like a frozen passive puppet. It's plainly visible that it's difficult for her.
Nina's age is all wrong. We know that Sergey picked up Nina 10 years ago, but the raid on Windbloom castle was 14-15 years ago - the capsule also had to carry a baby, not a 5-year old girl.
I have to admit I don't remember when Sergey first met Nina, but if what the others have said are true, then the time when Sergey and Nina met is all messed up to begin with. Was it 6 years ago or 10 years ago? Either way, I think someone found the capsule (14/15 years ago) and raised Nina for a couple of years before Sergey found and adopted her.
IMO, Nina in this flashback could be anywhere between 5 to 9 years old so even if we're not sure when exactly Sergey first met her, I think it is safe to assume that the baby has grown up by the time Sergey met Nina. Now, the only thing I want to know is that why didn't they throw the capsule away? Wouldn't it attract the attention of other people?
Anyway, lately I got the impression that there were actually 2 capsules. Maybe, just maybe, Rena took her own child down into the river to attract the enemy's attention. They probably thought that being an Otome, Rena is probably charged with the task of protecting the Royal Highness. However, maybe the real princess was sent by another person while Rena acted as a diversion.
If Shizuru resists now and pushes off Tomoe, she'll endanger Natsuki with Tomoe's wrath.
I have to disagree with this. Because IIRC, Shizuru was addressing Natsuki with her title, Gakuencho, instead of 'Natsuki'. As far as Tomoe is concerned, she probably thinks that Shizuru is simply concerned about the safety of their headmaster just like any other teacher would. On top of this, a couple of episodes ago Tomoe was jealous of Arika. If anything, the one that Tomoe most likely sees as her main competition would be Arika and not Natsuki. I agree that Shizuru was playing along to do something. I just don't think it was a wise decision. Just like I don't think it was wise for Chie to wear that gem.
It seems that animesuki is pretty slow at the moment. Where do you download your episodes so quickly? Or are these just some screenshots you picked up?
Can somebody help me?
"Gakuencho" is the proper way she consistently used to address Natsuki in presence of others. And Tomoe could easily deduce how much Shizuru is worried about her - both because of the question itself and also because of Shizuru's reaction to Tomoe's lie.
That's the thing, IMHO Tomoe knows perfectly well that Natsuki as captive gives her tremendous leverage over Shizuru. Whether or not she realizes that it's romantic in nature or "just" because of Natsuki's function as second pillar and gakuencho is secondary. Tomoe pretty much delivered the punchline in her subtle-veiled way: I grant you "favors" if you grant me "favors" too. Shizuru is aware of that. And if Shizuru is about to deny Tomoe, you can imagine that this doesn't bode well for those who are (supposedly) captive.
"Gakuencho" is the proper way she consistently used to address Natsuki in presence of others.
Yes, and it's also the way other teachers address Natsuki. So this doesn't give Tomoe any hint more than Natsuki is an important person for Garderobe.
Supposed that Tomoe wants to milk that knowledge for all its worth, what gives Shizuru the belief that if she plays along she'll ensure that the others won't get hurt? This is the same girl who has betrayed the school. Why would Shizuru believes what Tomoe has to say?
i think the chances of nina being rena's daughter is very high, cos in the new artbook cover of chara-design of mai series;
cover pic:
http://ymok.fc2web.com/images/BOOK_MAI-HiME_My-OTOME_01.jpg
rena's eyes and hair are the same colour as nina.

Garten: IMHO It doesn't require much brainpower to deduce that if Shizuru's first question was about the well-being of Natsuki/Gakuencho, Tomoe will realize very quickly that she will be important to Shizuru.
Unless I misunderstood you, your point seemed to be that because Shizuru used "Gakuencho" instead of "Natsuki", Tomoe shouldn't be able to realize that holding her captive would give her major leverage to pressure Shizuru. And because we know that Tomoe IS smart, Shizuru couldn't/shouldn't hope for Tomoe to miss this.
In fact, I understood the "if I'd do well, I might get another reward" as a veiled threat-offer to Shizuru. "I did something for you, I might be able to do something for her, too". And when Shizuru took her up on this, THEN she moved in - and "cashed in", so to say. Denying Tomoe AFTER this line would have definitely frustrated and angered her. And thus been risky for Natsuki.
As for your other question, it's one thing to believe that Tomoe will help Natsuki if Shizuru plays along. Very unlikely so, especially since we know that Natsuki has escaped. But Shizuru CANNOT KNOW that. But it's evident to her that IF Tomoe is speaking the truth, rejecting her would definitely increase the risk for Natsuki due to a possible Tomoe retaliation. You can't be sure that she will keep her word in a positive way, but you can be VERY sure that she will retaliate in a bad way IF she is denied and has the means to harm Natsuki. So why take the extra risk?
So why do YOU think that Shizuru "went along with Tomoe's desire"? I doubt that you will mean for lust or the spur of the moment?
Of course you are right that there may be hell to pay later on if Tomoe is pissed off when she realizes that Shizuru is leading her on. But that's something for the future. Rejecting now would piss her off right away...
>>cover pic:
>>rena's eyes and hair are the same colour as nina.
Well... not to squash your theory or anything like that, but the Rena of Mai Otome has different hair and eye colors compared to the Rena of the Cyber Formula series, who is featured in that pic.. ^^;
"I did something for you, I might be able to do something for her, too". And when Shizuru took her up on this, THEN she moved in - and "cashed in", so to say.
That's exactly where the problem is. You said it yourself. Tomoe's so called 'help' is not that much of a help at all. Shizuru is still a prisoner with or without her 'help'. How does Shizuru know that Tomoe won't hurt Natsuki anyway? Especially since this girl as you implied it, is willing to do anything to get what she wants.
Shizuru basically compromised her own moral and ethic to satisfy the whim of a liar. Even though that was done with the purpose of helping another person, the effort was iffy and questionable at best. Especially when the person she intended to help didn't even ask to be helped. Can you imagine how: "I slept with a 15 year old to save you" line will come across to anyone? Do you think they'll still be grateful after knowing/hearing that?
As i see, Shizuru's morals were always a 'bit' questionable (let's call her playful), and seems like yuri is kind of accepted between otome. Don't get me wrong, i'm still a ShizuruxNatsuki fan.
One thing is for sure: Shizuru is smart. Very smart, and dangerous. I think she already has a plan with, or without Tomoe. Of course, if Tomoe realizes that she has been played, she'll go for blood.
Of course, the incident itself still was a shocker.
I had a bit of hope after watching episode 19 which for a change wasn't a complete disaster but just as I expected it died with episode 20. For umpteenth time instead of leaving the characters to decide something some plot device was used to make them decide in favour of whatever the writers had in mind and to hell with motivation and character development. This Jabal creature should have just been named a plot device creature. The only good part was when Mashiro and Arika argued who was the bigger moron. It's a tough choice, I readily agree. :) I wonder if we are going to have just a rushed and stupid ending or a reset as an icing of the cake. I also wonder who the hell took the photograph of Nao and Natsuki - a paparazzo hading in the desert or something? :) It was quite a funny scene, though, but when will Haruka, Yukino or Natsuki actually do something important for a change? Episode 26?
I was just thinking.....(in view of what I've read from the previous forums for episodes 18, 19)....perhaps Mashiro could be Fumi's descendant? In anycase, I think perhaps there were 3 babies from the start.....as far as we know...we need a princess and an otome....perhaps there's a 3rd role that wasn't mentioned...yet it is actually a vital role. Personally....I would still like to think that Arika is Rena's daughter.... and Mashiro IS the REAL princess.....Nina is someone important too....and was probably being hunted along with the princess, which is why there was a need to send her away in the capsule. I think its no coincident that u need those 3 girls to activate the harmonium. But rather....Sunrise deliberately held back the cards and led us along...
I can't wait to watch the rest of the episodes >_< And I really hope nothing bad happens to Chie....she's a cool chick~ And where is Irina?~ Am I the only SergayXArika fan? I hope Nina gets over it so Arika can have him.... But it certainly seems like he has to die so that the girls can be reconciled. T_T SIGH~

"Can you imagine how: "I slept with a 15 year old to save you" line will come across to anyone? Do you think they'll still be grateful after knowing/hearing that?" - Garten
Well, at this point in time, I think Shizuru would rather say that, than say "sorry" to a dead Natsuki. Martim is right: Shizuru is a smart, smart woman. She's never without an underlying motive. Now I'm not sure how well Tomoe will fall for whatever Shizuru has in store, but Tomoe did go to great lengths just to get Shizuru out of jail. Though her personality is of a liar, her feelings for Shizuru are undeniable, as evidenced throughout the series. Now, if Shizuru is smart, which she is, she can play this to her advantage AND save Natsuki at the same time.
oh.. and to make a few stabs at the identity thing. Here's what's brewing in my head currently:
Nina = Rena's daughter
Mashiro = The real princess
Arika = Mai's daughter..... O_o
The last one is off. Mai is only a few years older then Arika. But would be funny.
FYI, the official My-Otome site updated the character section today with a few minor characters, but also those two other pillars.
I've got a translation (nothing too interesting, sadly. Just their titles) on my blog.
Nina = Rena's daughter
Arika = Real Princess/Bio-Enhance by Miyu
Mashiro = Fumi's daughter via the Gem.
Fumi in the capsule produces Eggs(lack of a better term) and it is then turn into a Gem. What if someone got ahold of one of these eggs before it was tunr into a gem.?
YES!!!! THE SWORD WIELDING MANIAC IS BACK!!!!!!
You know, in the grand scheme of things, it really doesn't MATTER who is really the princess, and who is really Rena's daughter.
Mashiro's the queen. Neither Nina nor Arika seem to want the job, and are highly unlikely to make a big issue out of it.
As for Rena's daughter, Arika is the successor to the Blue Sky Sapphire, and "spiritually" Rena's daughter. So it really doesn't matter there either.
well Nina cant be Rena's daughter because she does not carry the Sapphire of the Azure Sky,.. which Arika carries. so therefore
1.Nina'S The real princess
2.Arika is Rena'sDaughter ( not to mention they look so much alike) ppl.. watch the damn op which tells you shes Rena'sDaughter.
3.Mashiro i yet dont know..
but btw Rena HAS BLUE EYES NOT BROWN~ lol..
well Nina cant be Rena's daughter because she does not carry the Sapphire of the Azure Sky,.. which Arika carries. so therefore
err...did you entirely not pay attention?
The Princess had the Sapphire, not Rena's daughter.
But it seems Arika has the Sapphire, and Nina had the Baby Carrier thing.
So...we really have no idea.
And as I said, it doesn't even actually MATTER at this point.
Hah, I am all for Natsuki and Tomoe...what do you have against 2 girls having a little fun...age... again you are basing it on current times.... which through out history is not the norm....
> Can you imagine how: "I slept with a 15 year old to save you" line will come across to anyone? Do you think they'll still be grateful after knowing/hearing that?
Actually, I personally might be grateful and even touched that someone would go that far, to completely disregard their body, and go those lengths for my sake. When life is on the line, sometimes things just have to be weighed and sacrificed. Shizuru to me has long seemed the kind of person to be able to distinguish between sex, and an act of love/affection. You could almost see Shizuru's brain shut down when Tomoe touched her and pushed her backwards, as if she saw the act as purely clinical and physical.

Anyone remember the title of Ep 26 in HiME? SHINING DAYS. Anyone remember the name of the opening? SHINING DAYS. Anyone remember the name of Otome's first opening? DREAM WING..... ROFL
Image of the Big-Sword-Winged otome starts to haunt me again.........
Anyone remember the title of Ep 26 in HiME? SHINING DAYS. Anyone remember the name of the opening? SHINING DAYS. Anyone remember the name of Otome's first opening? DREAM WING..... ROFL
And your point is...?
Fencedude, do you have a short temper or something? The girl was just pointing out the similarity between the last episode of HiME and Otome. And why do you always jump on everyone's mistake? Chill out a little bit.
Anyway, the episode is quite good. Was worried for Shizuru though.
I'm a fan of mai-hime and mai-otome. But sometimes I get the feeling that these two anime lacks some actions. I mean it's great to see a little information just so you can follow. But when I saw the new opening song, I wanted to see more robes or fighting. By the way if you've seen the manga, there's a lot more action so.
Anyway good anime!!
maybe shizuru is just manipulating tomoe's emotions so she can use her to help her (shizuru here) get back galderobe
OR shizuru just needs some loving that she's not getting for natsuki :DDD JKJKJK
OR shizuru didnt do anything with tomoe (doubt it)
*Er..... Running frantically around the room!...NooooooOOoO~!*
Um, interesting comments about Shizuru and Tomoe.
I can't believe what I just saw....
Need to photoshop Natsuki's head in to replace Tomoe before I can sleep tonight......
Personally .... the whole Otome is kinda slow for my taste compare to Hime. Can't quite grow an attachment to the Otome series, Hime was much more exciting....and the story is much more in depth. ....
I'll keep on watching as long as Shizuru and Natsuki is in it hahahaha. ^_^
Can't wait for next week's episode.
By the way, love your reviews! Helps understanding the series a lot! You guys must have some good eye, cause you bring up some...actually most of the things that I miss.
Keep up the great work!
So any guesses why all 3 lights on the harmonium triggered when Nina set foot on the first step? Mashiro and Arika together only got 2 lights. Does the harmonium remember that they were there before, or is Nina herself the complete package?
And another random thought. Natsuki has several times spoken of Shinso as if she were still a conscious entity rather than a tanked corpse. Does that mean Rena is also? Do you suppose that Rena will withdraw nanomachine support from the Valkyries if she becomes aware of what her power is being used for?
I finally got the lyrics for "Hoshi ga Kanaderu Monogatari" so I decided to post them along with the translation.
(Arika)
Mezame wo matsu kuni no mukashi no hanashi
Sasagemashou mune ni yadoru hikari
Hoshi ni naru kibou ashita ga mieru
Aisuru hito yo mattete okure
(Nina)
Kokoro no mado ni tatsu sadame no yokogao
Tomoshimashou yume wo mamoru hikari
Hoshi wa tada hitori erabe to tsugeru
Aisuru hito ga watashi wo yobeba kawaru
(Mashiro)
Uruwashiku tachi mau kegare naki hane
Seioimashou miko no inochi no hikari
Hoshi ni naru tame ni umarete wa naranu
Aisuru hito ni dakarete nemure
Translation:
An old story of a country waiting to be awakened
I'll sacrifice the light that dwells in my heart
A star turns into hope, I can see the future
My beloved, wait for me
The profile of fate that stands at the window of my heart
I'll light the light that protects dreams
The star says to just chose one
But, if my beloved calls me, it will change
Untainted feathers dance beautifully
I'll carry the holy child's light of life
To become a star it can't be born
Sleep in the arms of your beloved
ok, many people will not agree with my opinions but here is what i think.
All the way back to eps 7, the 'Mikoto' apparition mentioned about the singer's melody, the player and the protector's charm.
My thots is that one person alone can open the seal but he requires the protector's charm. That is to say he/she needs both the Blue Sky Sapphire and Ultimate Black Diamond pendants to unlock the harmonium.
To operate it requires at least 2 persons. The most appropriate candidates would be Arika, Mashiro and Nina which makes it 3 persons. Reason? A complete song is needed and all three know the 3 separate parts individually. As for the player, Nina is good in playing the piano/organ.
That explains it all. I feel that it fits the scenarios and puzzles very well. I may be wrong on the other hand.........
I really like how the Anime has made Midori a strong mentor and role model to Arika and Mashiro. This in turn has strengthen their friendship, as well as teach them how to be a stronger person. The full story on Nina's past was also quite nice but, Sergay surprised me on how cold he can be.
I think the player is Nina indeed. (as well as the real princess due to the pod).
I think Arika is the protector: I was just watching again episode 7 where they find the harmonium and I couldn't help but notice that the painting with Rena had exactly the same haircut as Arika.
Mashiro might be the song, linking her lineage to Fumi is a bold move (Fumi is very old after all) but an interesting theory.
My other option would be to make both Arika and Nina Rena's daughters(twins) and Mashiro the princess.
It is still very hard to come to conclusions though, but I'm certain that those three are the main harmonium and thus plot players.
Blah, I always seem to have unpopular opinions...but I, for one, am glad that Tomoe is spicing things up in the ShizNat world! Although I loved the two in Mai-HiME, I can't help but feel bored by them in Mai-Otome (where Shizuru is also ridiculously overpowered). Go Tomoe! You go on with your sexy yuri self! And, I'm still obsessed how she can pull off that uneven hair cut and still be bad-ass!
And, I really love Arika and Mashiro. They might be my favorite characters in Mai-Otome, though I have a soft-spot for Yayoi too.
And, also..."Don't call me Nina" is probably the stupidest episode title ever. What else is Sergey suppose to call you? Little emo twit who creepily angsts over her father all day and acts as a wretched friend, and has bad hair?
I like Nina BTW, I'm just saying. :)
:) Deadpill, at first that's what I thought too but on a closer inspection, the episode title is actually "Don't call me Ni-na", with the emphasis on the dash. I think Nina was protesting the way Sergey pronounced her name, which is playfully elongated and almost in sing-a-song kind of way: "Ni-na". This is just the way he expresses his affection as a father but Nina doesn't like it because she thinks he sees her as a little kid.
Ah, that makes sense. At first, I thought this episode was directed towards Arika...but I guess we have a few more episodes to go before the girls confront each other. "Don't Call Me Nina-chan" would have been a better title, had Sergey called her that before... Oh well, it's clear to me now! Thanks Garten!
Why do I love Nao and Haruka so much? Does this mean that I subconciously hate Shizuru? I hope not!
Uh-oh. Only six episodes to go? That's a little more than two hours of story time remaining. At this point, I'm skeptical about the writers' ability to wrap up the story satisfactorily by episode 26. For a series that invested so much into building an elaborate plot, that would be a pity... it might be better if they left the ending open for a second season.
BTW, Irina is right here.
BTW, Irina: if nanomachines are so great, can't they fix her vision? Why does she need glasses?
And if i recall correctly, she's pretty cute without glasses.
Does anybody have a list of the rest of the episode titles, with English translation?

Since everyone is speculating, I shall add my $0.02
Nina: Arika, I am your SISTER!
Arika: NooooOOOOOOOO!!!!
Queen Windtbloom was unable to have children and resorted to artificial conception and asking Rena to help produce an heir. Both conceived and 2 babies were born not far apart. Around the same time, the King was also trying for the heir and consorted with the Duke's wife who gave birth to Mashiro. The Duke eventually discovers the affair after Mashiro's birth and schemes to get revenge.
"Arika of the Mysterious Valley" sounds like a cool anime series a la "Nadia and the Secret of Blue Water," or "Nausica and the Valley of the Wind," or "[Jane:] Secret of the Cerulean Sand."
Posing by the canal and mimicking as Sergei:

It could ALSO mean "Otome of the Azure Sky", if that's not obvious enough XD I think that "Otome of the Azure Sky" is more propriate here...... but oh well, you'd never know.
And I love the way they end the series with the title of the song, just like they did in HiME.... XD
Maybe this is out of topic. But has anyone heard of Mai Hime the Movie?
Maybe this is out of topic. But has anyone heard of Mai Hime the Movie?
It's a fake. The release date in the trailer is 20006.
Well it could be a mistake since they do spell "materialise" wrong. Plus the scenes seemed kind of real unless this is one big joke by Sunrise.
Mai Hime movie a fake? Why would someone go to that trouble? Is the extra zero a typo?
That's what I want to know. I mean I'm very excited about the movie but the extra zero worried me.
(Mai Hime movie a fake? Why would someone go to that trouble? Is the extra zero a typo?)
It's a DVD extra on the second Mai Otome DVD.
Keep dreaming if you want. Some people on my Anime forum are still in denial. It's a fun clip Sunrise made because they can. Get over it.
I am willing to bet anyone a Million Dollars that there will be a Mai-Hime movie by 20006
:D
One comment about the picture captions... did you forget already? It's "Open, sardine!"
Bad eyesight is often genetic; I expect the nanomachines can fix injuries but can't fix genetic problems.
Regarding the Mai HiME movie trailer... is there any proof that it's fake? I mean real proof, not "I heard rumours on the internet..." proof.
My understanding of it was, this trailer was released on the Mai Otome DVD and promoted as an "ultimate dream movie!" or something like that. This doesn't necessarily mean it's fake though... it could be interpreted as meaning "the movie you've been dreaming of!" (or "wishing for")
Has there been any official, definite word from Sunrise on this?
I think the big clue that it's a fake is the promotional tour (aka "road show") scheduled for 20006.
No, not 2006, 20006.
"I think the big clue that it's a fake is the promotional tour (aka "road show") scheduled for 20006."
Promotional tour? Where is this mentioned?
In the Doremi translation of the trailer, the 20006 seems to refer to the sale of some calendars. It doesn't really seem related to the movie itself...
*does some research*
It seems I'm not the only person who thinks this... http://www.mai-otome.com/2006/02/mai-hime-movie.html
You aren't going to let this go are you?
ITS A JOKE.
I've heard that they're actually planning a Mai Hime theatrical feature, but it will be a live-action movie.
I don't understand all the fuss about the capsule and Nina's age.
The hint the screenwriters want to give is that that capsule is the one Rena put the baby in. Why would it be found in the hideout of a gang of kidnappers? If the capsule had been collected by anyone else, and those criminals happened to kidnap that very kid a few years later, they would have no reason to take the capsule too.
So, the only possibility that would justify the capsule's presence is that someone from that organization collected the capsule from the river and raised the kid as their own. If their intent is to train the kids to become assassins, it makes sense (and, by the way, was this group affiliated to some terrorist organization? Schwarz?).
Now, who was in the capsule? It could be Nina; note that, unlike the other kids, she hid from the military police and tried to shoot Sergey: thus, she must have been kept there long enough to grow attached to the kidnappers, and to gain some familiarity with weapons.
It could also be, of course, that the whole capsule lead is a red herring.
Fencedude: Woah, calm down. I think my point is a fair one - I'm merely asking for proper proof that the movie trailer is a fake (as opposed to popular opinion).
I think this is a little different to the standard stupidity around here (ie "Hay guys did you know that Arika is in the last ep of Mai-HiME?! And Nina is in the OP & ED credits!")
Lets for a moment say that it was indeed Nina in the capsule at the Assasin HQ, and that they picked her up several years ago. How did she lose the Souten no Seiyu, and why did they keep the capsule?
It is reasonable to assume that if you are a relatively ignorant assassin trainer, and you pick up a capsule containing a baby and a Souten no Seiyu, you might fail to recognize that you carry a gemstone of incredible power, and might decide to pawn it off to buy booze.
And you might in fact try to do the same with the capsule, except that pretty stones are in much higher demand (and price) than baby capsules. Failing to pawn the baby capsule at a satisfactory price, you might then decide to keep it, cos it looks pretty enough as a shelf ornament, and you can try and impress girls by claiming that its a dinosaur egg, or somesuch.
And if you are a highly knowledgable Baa-chan, and you happen across a gem stone of incredible power in the pawn shop, you might decide to buy it at all costs for your Grand-daughter (adopted or otherwise), and tell her tall tales that her mother was an Otome (As opposed to some horrid truth, e.g. she eloped with the milkman). Note that all this is pure speculation. It will be more than likely disproved in the next few episodes.
On the Shizuru and Tomoe thing, while it might be reasonable to think that Shizuru being a smart smart woman has some sort of plan B, one must also take into account that her actions are being dicatated by a bunch of monkeys, with word processors (i.e. Sunrise scripwriters) Actually that might be an insult to monkeys. We have already seen other smart smart characters to incredibly dumb things (E.g. Tomoe trying to drop a testtube of acid on Arika.)
I have this feeling, this show is going nowhere. I feel sooo sorry.Still hoping for a strong change of pace.
Jassa, there is proof, but not concrete:
Animals don't talk. So do CATS.
And Reito is supposed to be HUMAN in Mai-HiME.

Did you completely miss the text stating "Also Airing: Mikoto's Delicious Big Adventure"?
I took that to mean the Mikoto & Cat!Reito stuff was from a seperate, light-hearted, short film. A lot like the ones attached to the Pokemon movies:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pokemon_the_movie_2000
From what I've heard, shorts like this are not uncommon, and are generally not counted as canon.
This is my opinion of this argument:
Maki maki maki maki maki maki maki maki
Yeah Fencedude, we know you're a dick.
The proofs to make it sound crazy...
I can not remember the reset reviving Alysa (the reset only revived the most precious persons, not the HIME's), yet she lives in the movie trailer. This breaks the canon.
Add to that the highly whacked end of the trailer (20006 stuff) and some other details that seemed improbable (Reito acting weird, Mikoto speaking cat, Miyu acting as Alysa's Child allowing her to fly, Nagi losing his cool...) and you get a trailer that is out of character and full of errors.
This movie (the trailer announces) will NOT see the light.
There might be a MH movie one day, but NOT this one, as it is highly inconsequent.
@umbrae
Alyssa returned at the end of Mai-HiME. Watch the church scene with Nao and Miyu again. She even speaks a few lines of dialogue.
I've already elaborated on much of the rest of what you brought up, and the rest of the stuff is not really improbable enough to justify an instant dismissal of the possibility of the film being made.
Sure, it COULD be made, theoretically.
But NOTHING has EVER been said of it being real.
EVERYTHING that has been announced about that trailer made it CLEAR that it was a joke.
Its not even a new idea, fake movie trailers have been made as extras before.
"EVERYTHING that has been announced about that trailer made it CLEAR that it was a joke."
...which brings me back to my original point - to my knowledge, nothing has really been announced.
"Regarding the Mai HiME movie trailer... is there any proof that it's fake? I mean real proof, not "I heard rumours on the internet..." proof.

I always thought Nina was more likely Rena's daughter. She's the best of her class, like Rena, she resembles Rena more - if nothing else, in coloring - and it would really be ironic for Sergey if all this time he's been searching, he's already found what he has been looking for.
I agree, I don't think Akira is even a part of the switch. She is more likely related to Miyu's past than Windbloom's.
As for Shizuru, she's not remotely interested in Tomoe. I could tell episodes back when she confronted Tomoe about wanting to cut corners to become an Otome. Shizuru is just using her until she gets what she wants, desperate or not, Shizuru is a good manipulator, and the more desperate she gets the more destructive she'll be - as shown in Mai-HiME. Where Natsuki is involved, I do not doubt Shizuru will be especially vicious and ruthless, regardless of the opponent. Underhanded or not, Tomoe is going DOWN!
Go figure. I still am not emotionally invested in Akira, and I fear I may not be by the end of the 26 episodes. However, I DO look forward to Mikoto appearing and WOOT! MAI!!!! I can't wait for Mai to appear!
I can't help it... the thought of Akira/Sergey pairing is still an "EW!" issue for me. If he died before 26, I don't know what I'd feel... I don't know, it's really suspicious that he's not connected to Mai. Anyone else notice his similar looks in the story with the Fire stone, and the fact that Natsuki confronts him about not remembering "that girl"?
Maybe the story-writers kept the Mai memory from coming out due to plot, but currently I don't think I'm remotely invested in that relationship either... except if Mai shows up and can benefit... MOU! Seriously, the Akira/Sergey thing is just disturbing.
blue: you mean arika/sergey? yeah it's also an big "EWW" issue for me as well.. i mean sergey at least..30?? arika is way too underage
and i assume mikoto will make her appearence before mai.. and i must say i can't wait for it. I'm curious about her role in this series.. as mentioned on some of the previous episodes.. they also mention her as one of the otome's legends.. and who knows she's the one who save aoi
and i wonder who is the other 2 otome's that shown in the 2nd OP next to shizuru
urr.. Oops! I noticed that I've began spelling Arika's name as Akira, which is really stupid since Akira is really a guy's name -_-;; Urr.. they both have the same letters?
Hehehe... Yeah! Arika/Sergei... EWWWW!!! Mental images... EWWWWWW!!!
In response to all the Shizuru x Tomoe debates, I think SUNRISE (purposely?) confused the viewers using dramatic irony and the ambiguous sentence spoken by Tomoe.
Most viewers have watched Mai HiME so therefore it would be logical to say that Shizuru likes Natsuki in Otome as well but all the argument about Tomoe KNOWING that Shizuru likes Natsuki is a different story. We, as viewers, aren't given any specific information other than the ambiguous statements and scenes in Otome [the "connection" scene when Natsuki looks up when Shizuru was with Tomoe]. It could be interpreted either way and I guess we like to speculate on what's going to happen next to this sub-story so we try to read between the lines (using by HiME evidence/facts/proofs).
So my opinion? Just watch what the screenwriters of SUNRISE do and THEN blow up? jump for joy?
Chie and Sergay (possibly Midori and Mai) are so going to die in Otome...SUNRISE is EVIL! You can see their evil grins, laughing at the viewers' reactions.
hahaah...Funny thoughts i have come across here in this review....
I would have really liked it if Mai ran away to be with Tate...because she is the ruby user....right???
and then when Arika meets her, she can see that Mai and Tate's love is strong...
but yeahh just because i really like them both being together...but i still like this series....
My HiME!! RULEsss!!
i've seen every mai otome episode ( go to gofish.com) and nina is the real princess, mashiro is an orphan, arika is rena's daughter. p.s. in the first episode it also shows the baby has orange hair in the capsule rena has and the blue sapphire of azure sky
