*sigh* Why do I always get into crappy situation like the one I'm in now? FYI, I'm typing this from my office now because I can't get into my apartment. I foolishly forgot to bring my key with me when I left the place this morning. I know I should call Locksmith but it's late at night and I don't feel like waiting outside until the guy comes and they usually don't tell you when they'll come. Oh well, at least I still have an internet connection here or else, it'd be mind numbing waiting until morning. Anyway, moving on to the actual series, unfortunately this episode sees the rating goes down a little bit. I wonder if this is because the episode feels a bit repetitive? As usual, Eri and Ogurin don't get too much screentime either. Eri did provide some advice for Ruka in this episode and is it just me or did everyone else also get the impression that Eri knows the truth about Ruka? And although she said otherwise, I still think that Eri doesn't actually cope with loneliness all that well. If this is true, then expect to see a change in her mood starting from next week.

Episode 6

After Michiru left, Ruka tells the other that it's better this way, ignoring Eri's attempt to point out that Michiru could be in danger. She tells Eri that it's Michiru who willingly went home so there's nothing they can do. As for Michiru, she finally arrives at Sousuke's apartment only to find that he's still alive. The minute she arrives, he asks for her mobile phone, telling her that they should buy a new one. He then burns Ruka's photo in sink whilst telling Michiru that she's his and asks her to live together with him. He assures her that one else will interfere with them. At the same time, Takeru, Ruka, and Eri have just gone home after drinking themselves silly. They're surprised when the see Ogurin inside the house, asking them if he can stay here again. When Ruka asks him if he's divorced his wife, Ogurin admits that he has not done this. He has talked to his wife and they agree to live separately for now. In response, Ruka tells him that he's cunning, pointing out that now he's lonely, he comes back to Eri. However, Ruka believes that the minute his wife wants him back, Ogurin will come back to her. Because of this, Ruka angrily shakes Ogurin, asking the guy to consider Eri's feeling.

In his defence, Ogurin claims that he's still trying to figure out how his life will be in the future. Much to his surprise, Eri doesn't mind if he stays. She believes that not knowing what's ahead is common sense in human relationship. Since Eri doesn't mind, Ruka eventually lets Ogurin to stay. She, however, claims that she's not worried about Michiru although the others express their concern. The next day, Ruka tells herself that if she never had that reunion with Michiru back then, she wouldn't have to feel the anguish that she feels from having to deal with Michiru's love life. If she can go back, she feels it'd be better if she's alone like she's always been. During a card game that night, Ogurin wonders if anyone has heard from Michiru. Ruka admits that she hasn't bothered calling her but Takeru has and he couldn't reach her. He believes the phone is no longer in use. Ruka, however, doesn't seem to care and urge them to continue their card game. When Takeru looks for Michiru at her workplace, he finds out that she has quit her job. Because of this, Takeru decides to come to Sousuke's apartment but after ringing the doorbell, no one seems to answer. Much to his surprise, the door is unlocked so he comes in to the apartment.

The minute Takeru enters, he is shocked to see Michiru with eyepatch covering one of her eyes. Takeru somehow manages to persuade her to talk to him at a cafe, ensuring her that he's made sure that Sousuke is at work. When asked what she does everyday after quitting her job, Michiru tells Takeru that she washes clothes, iron them, cooks, watch tv, and Sousuke calls her every 2 hours. This reminds her that she has to go. Ruka manages to get her to sit back and asks what happened to her eyes. When he takes off her eyepatch, he's horrified to see her eyes completely bruised. It seems because she took 2 hours doing grocery shopping and didn't make it home before Sousuke, she got beaten up. Takeru tells her that he thought it'd be okay since Michiru was the one who decided to come back but now he realizes that this life is indecent so he suggests that she leaves it asap. Much to her horror, Sousuke calls her mobile, asking her where she is now because he just called home and she wasn't there. Michiru claims that she's taking out the trash. As it turns out, however, Sousuke is actually at home and knows that Michiru is not taking out the trash. As soon as Michiru ends the phone call, Takeru asks her to run away.

He believes that even if she's not there and Sousuke hurts himself, the one who deserves the blame is none other than Sousuke himself. Eventually Takeru manages to persuade Michiru to come back to the share house with him. While they cross the street, however, Ruka notices Sousuke on the other side of the road so she urges Michiru to run. Unfortunately Sousuke notices the two so he runs after them. The two, however, manages to get into a taxi, in time for Sousuke to pound on the door. Thankfully the taxi driver manages to take them away before Sousuke can catch up with them. Instead of going back to the share house, Takeru takes Michiru to his bar, telling her that since they're closed tonight, they can stay here for the night. He also assures her that she'd be okay and that there's a way to protect her. He suggests that they go to a hosptial tomorrow and if they get medical certificate from the doctor, it'd be enough to proof that she's been abused, providing legal motive to keep Sousuke away. Michiru, however, asks Takeru not to tell Ruka about this since she doesn't want to worry her. That's probably a good idea since Ruka seems to be busy with her own sexual identity issue.

The doctor who takes her case asks her if she ever discuss her situation with her family. Ruka tells him that although his father never tells her this, she knows he wishes she'll marry like a normal girl. She thinks if she tells him the truth, he'd get hurt. The doctor, however, understands that she's hurt on the inside as well. If it can't be a family, she should tell a friend. Meanwhile, Takeru is back at the share house when he gets a phone call from someone. After picking up the phone, however, no one seems to be talking on the other side until he hears the sound of a little boy. He immediately realizes that the person on the other line is his sister. Takeru immediately hangs up the phone and looks terrorized. Ruka then comes home and tries to tell Takeru her secret but she changes her mind at the last second. The next day, Takeru takes Michiru to a hospital but when he gets back to the shared house, he realizes that Sousuke is already there waiting for him. Sousuke demands that Takeru reveals Michiru's whereabouts but Takeru tells Sousuke that he abused her, watched her actions, and kept her home. Takeru believes that what Sousuke has done are all law-violating acts.

Takeru assures Sousuke that if Sousuke ever threatens or force her again, he'll call the police and place complaints at Sousuke's workplace. He then orders Sousuke to go home and Sousuke surprisingly complies. At the bar, Takeru tells the now recovered Michiru that she should go back to the share house. He's sure everyone will be happy to see her again. Because of this, Michiru returns to the share house and Takeru explains what happened after Michiru left for Sousuke. While the others agree to protect Michiru, however, Ruka keeps silent the whole time. After a while, Ruka excuses herself, claiming that she has to wake up early tomorrow. The next day, Ruka also pass breakfast so Eri decides to hurry up as well so she can talk to her. As the two walk to the station, Eri wonders if she's angry at Michiru's indecisiveness. Ruka claims that she's not angry but Eri tells her that she understands Michiru because a person is not simply black or white. Even useless guys have a cute thing or two about them. This causes Ruka to wonder if Eri lets Ogurin sleeps in her room again sometimes and Eri admits sometimes she lets him. Ruka admits that she doesn't understand Eri's easy-going attitude.

Ruka points out that if Ogurin leave again, the one who's going to get hurt is Eri again so she wonders if Eri is not afraid of that. Eri tells Ruka that she's not that weak and she doesn't expect much out of Ogurin either. This causes Eri to realize why Ruka is angry at Michiru: it's because she loves Michiru. Ouch, TKO. Meanwhile, Sousuke tries to contact Michiru through her mobile without much success. However, his attitude changes from creepy to caring, when he sees a kid looking hungry. Meanwhile, Takeru decides to help repairing Ruka and Michiru's friendship by asking Ruka to come all the way to a park to fix his bike. He promises a delicious treat if she'd come. Despite being annoyed by this, Ruka agrees to come to the park. When she gets there, Takeru manages to put her on a twin bike and tells Michiru to ride behind. He then rides another bike and speeds past her, causing Ruka to be competitive as usual. Eventually, Ruka starts talking to Michiru again, allowing the later to apologize for being so uncertain about her lives. Ruka then narrates that the reason she averts her eyes from Michiru is because she always want to stare at her. The reason she can't be gentle with Michiru is because she's afraid of losing her.

Ruka then decides to be upfront and asks Michiru what happened with her and Sousuke. Michiru tells her that when she's without Sousuke, she's gradually losing sight of herself. She always gives priority to Sousuke's feelings than her own. As a result, she ends up not knowing what she likes, what she hates, and what she wants to do. However, there's something she can't stand right to the end and that's when Sousuke badmouths Ruka. Ruka wonders what Sousuke said about her so Michiru repeats what Sousuke said about Ruka not being a girl. In order to break off the tension, Takeru cracks a joke about there's nothing Ruka can do about that before running off from her. This effectively melt the tension. That night, Sousuke can be seen staggering away from a house belonging to Ruka's parents. When Ruka comes to her parents' house to give flower to her mother, her brother informs her that they've been getting strange letters. As it turns out, the letters basically slanders Ruka, saying that Ruka has a male heart and is a monster. The letter also claims that Ruka looks at women close to her with perverted eyes. If the person doesn't believe it, the letter suggests they ask Ruka herself.

Ruka's brother thinks that people are just jealous that Ruka enters the championship. Because of this, Ruka uses this excuse to assure her parents. Although she manages to convince her parents, Ruka is clearly disturbed about this that she becomes a bit stand-offish towards Michiru. This causes Michiru to wonder if it'd be better if she's not around. Takeru, however, tells her that if Michiru were to left the house, Ruka will be really sad. Unknown to them, Ruka has just come out of her room and overhears the conversation. Ruka hears Michiru saying that Takeru seems to understand Ruka well, while she sometimes doesn't understand Ruka. Sometimes she feels a barrier around Ruka's heart that she can't break into. Ruka who heard this seems hurt so she decides to take a walk. Takeru decides to follow her into a park and manages to cheer her up by playing the swing like a kid. Eventually Ruka tells Takeru that what Michiru said is true. The reason is because she's afraid she'd be hated if her real self were to be known. However, Ruka now wants Takeru to hear it. Before this, however, Takeru tells Ruka that he has something he wants to tell Ruka first before. Takeru then drops the bombshell: he tells Ruka that he loves her.

Impression

Despite being repetitive, the writers did a good job of emphasizing how difficult it is for victim of domestic abuse to set themselves free from their abuser. Although we think that it's abnormal for Michiru to keep going back to Sousuke, from her POV, he was the only person that she felt close to. She was also born in a family where physical violence from a husband to a wife was accepted so she probably thinks it's okay for Sousuke to hit her when she does wrong things. I do think that it's about time we see Sousuke's past. I don't think it's necessary for us to sympathize with him. The flashback is necessary for us to understand why he becomes what he is now. The thing that people should understand is that even with an abusive past, there's no excuse for Sousuke's action. There are people who were also abused in the past but they managed to get past that and do not turn into abuser themselves. On the other hand, we did see the reverse of his personality in this episode. He seems so kind to that kid in the playground. Of course, it's hard to know what would he do if the kid actually makes a mistake. Maybe he'll beat the poor kid as well just like he beats up Michiru all of these times.

As for Takeru, it looks like my theory back in episode 3 is starting to come true, at least the sister part of the theory. I wonder if the kid that was shown together with his sister is actually his own child? That's a bit creepy but it's a possibility. Also, props to him though for standing up against Sousuke although that makes me worried for his safety. Sousuke probably thinks that he has interest in Michiru and he probably ends up being the casualty that Michiru talked about at the start of this story. I also like how he can easily change Ruka's mood from gloomy to happy in a matter of seconds. I also wonder if he has a suspicion that Ruka might like Michiru and this is why he blurt out the confession before Ruka can say what she wanted to say. In a way, I dread the aftermath of the confession because I can see Ruka becomes even more reluctant to talk about herself after this. Speaking of Ruka, what Sousuke did was really despicable. It was clever of her to use her brother's idea and turned it into an excuse though. It's obvious now that her parents seem to be happier if she's actually straight and will get married to a man someday. It's no surprise that Ruka would rather keep her real self all to herself.

Poll: If a friend or a family member were to tell you that he or she is attracted to people of their own sex, what would your real reaction be, both short and long-term? Would this revelation affects your relationship with that person?

Ooh, that's too bad to be locked out of your apartment =_= I hope that got resolved. It's my first time posting a comment, but I really love reading your posts. Thanks so much for being here ^__^!

Sousuke: I think in a way, Sousuke sympathizes (maybe it's empathizes...) with the boy because he might be seeing a reflection of himself from when he was younger. The boy seems to be neglected (or did they say it was abuse?) by his parent and Sousuke seemed to have had a similar experience with his mother when she got a lover. I think Michiru was telling Takeru about how Sousuke was thrown from one relative's house to the next because of his mother, so I can see how that might have psychologically damaged Sousuke in a way. Not to say that it justifies his abusive nature, but I think the fact that his mother left him like that made him possessive of Michiru. He couldn't keep a hold of his mother, so maybe he thought this was the only way he could control his lover. This is just my conjecture though...

Predictions: Also, I'm starting to wonder if maybe the child that Michiru becomes pregnant with will maybe be Takeru's? He's really kind to her, so she might start to like him in that way, and maybe when he's trying to get over his past trauma (and Ruka's possible rejection?) they might end up getting together...? I'm almost a bit afraid on the idea that maybe the person who actually dies would be Takeru since that was my initial prediction at the beginning of episode one, but I really hope that I'm wrong.

Eri, My Love: I wonder if there's a chance we'll ever get to see the series... I really would like to see Mizusawa with more screen time since her character seems a lot more interesting than she is getting time to show for in Last Friends. Maybe we'll get to see something next week?

As a responce to the poll, I would definatelly support them. I really don't see how this can negatively affect our relationship.
Probably, it is because I am also more interested in girls. So in a way I would understand what they are going through, and what this confession means to them. I am also reluctant to talk about it with my Mom. I know that she would not approve of it. I do hope that she will support me, after a while... Just... not right now.

My guess as to why the ratings dropped is because of a variety program that airs on the same timeslot, "Arashi no himitsu-chan". That had pretty bad ratings because of LF, but it went up to 8% this week XD I guess people are really getting tired of the DV scenes...

But anyway, as if Sosuke couldn't be any more of a f**ktard, he had to pull that crap on Ruka. I mean, is he that big a wuss that he can't deal with her face to face? Frickin pathetic...wish she could beat him senseless...but then that would be wrong too, right? =__=;;;

And I hate to say this, but I really wish my theory about Takeru's (now revealed) sister being his teacher was true. My jaw literally fell off when he said "nee-chan??" And if her kid somehow turns out to be his, then I will be Officially Creeped Out.

But then I don't it's possible, because if I recall ep3 correctly, the way Takeru said to her [something along the lines of] "....but you have a husband and kid now! leave me alone!!"...and whatever she did to him happened when he was little...hmmm..

As for your poll, I think short-term, I would be shocked and have a bit of a difficult time taking it all in. Long term, since it's their choice and I obviously want my family and friends to always be happy, I wouldn't have a problem at all.
If it were a family member, I don't think our relationship would change, but if it were a friend, I guess it may change slightly, because I may not get to hang with him/her as often since he/she may want to go places I may not fit in and such..

I've read somewhere that many people who have been abused in any way as a child have a higher tendency to become an abuser. Thus, Sousuke being the DV he is now. I think this because he was kind to the kid, and as Hisaya above said, to him it might feel like he's looking at a reflection of himself.

Response for the poll: My cousin came out of the closet one day, while I was at their house. It was kinda awkward to hear about it-- she had been typecasted as the girly-girl throughout her life as I remember. Her mom got really angry and started yelling at her that day, but that was only short-lived because they're on best-friend-ish terms today.

I was shocked too-- and it was awkward for me to talk to her for awhile, because she was the one I looked to when I needed girl advice, and now she was all tomboy-ish and all, but in the end, it was okay. We still talk-- a lot. She's the one I go to for video games. :D

i dont have problem with the DV things in Last Friends, though it is sadistic.
I wish Ruka will be with Takeru (even i know the likelihood of Ruka to accept Takeru is 0.0001%) because it's hard to find nice guy like Takeru.
In the next episode, maybe Ruka will say " I hope you will take care of Michiru...bla bla bla" - reject him directly.
As in previous episode, she suggested Michiru to find good guy like Takeru.

To respond to your poll, my real reaction, would be surprised and annoyed. then, i will give advise.

short term response: maybe i will blame myself for not taking care my family member or friend very well until she/he became like this.

long term response: i dont think the relationship will be the same like before, but i'll try to accept that matter and act like usual. because for people who have attracted to people of their own sex, it must be very difficult. im glad im not that type. Of course, i will feel the fear, if the friend is the same sex with me.

Sousuke was really messed up for sending those letters to Ruka's family. This guy is obviously crazy obsessed, doing anything and everything to get rid her and to get Michiru back to be his little punching bag. Someone seriously needs to stop him and get him some help.
If only Takeru and Ruka can be together, but that's not possible. Especially since it seems like she obviously knows what she is and just doesn't know how to express that side of her to others so that she can truly be herself and be accepted. Also, I hope Michiru and Ruka's friendship will still remain. Even if Ruka does happen to have feelings for Michiru, it doesn't seem likely that Michiru may have the same feelings for Ruka.
Also, I really hope that Takeru isn't the incident that Michiru was referring to or his sister's child being his. But with what they've been doing on the show so far, I wouldn't be surprised.
(I'm really impressed with how this show is going. I seriously wonder how do these writers come up with this stuff? They are really good and so are the actors who have to portray the characters.)

As for the poll, I would probably be a little shocked, but I would get over it because I really care about everyone in my family, so I would accept them no matter what. Plus, family always comes first in my book. I say that because I guess have something like that going on right now in my life. I'm probably like Ruka except it's more of sexual orientation than gender issues. I would like to tell them and have them accept me for me, but coming from a strict Asian and religious family I'm not sure about that. So i'm fine, as long as I know my family is there and happy. That's how much I love and care about them.

In response to the poll, surely I don't care. I really don't think there's a need to distinguish between homosexual from the so called "normal relationship". Can one gaurantee the love between a man and woman could be eternal, pure, and both parties being loyal to each other?

Both Ruka and Takeru r terrific

As for the poll: I've actually been in such situation, my sister is gay. I had been the first person in my family to know this, until three years later she told our parents. I guess I suspected this all along, even though I've never verbalised it (or even really gave it a serious thought), so it wasn't a big shock to me. Maybe because she's older and beforehand she taught me to respect people of a different orientation. Thus it wasn't a problem for me to accept it at all. My parents, well.. it IS hard for them, being Catholic and such, but they try their best to support her. I'd risk saying that things went for better, because she doesn't have to hide things from us. I think our relationship is much better than before.

The character I symphatize with the most is probabely Takeru. God, he MUST be suspecting what Ruka feels, still he got himself into this strange and complicated thing between her and Michiru. He's the nicest person of them all. Hope he'll get a happy ending... And won't be the one who'll die.

i have to say that the episodes ARE indeed getting quite repetitive but because i LOVE all the characters i am naturally addicted to this drama..especially because of RUKA. Ruka made the right decision when she used her brother's explanation as to why she would get that kind of letter but it was extremely sad to see how happy her parents were..they were so relieved -.-

anyways in response to your question...i have a friend that i found out was a lesbien back when i was in gr 7? i seriously thought it was a joke then but when it finally clicked it didn't affect me that much (maybe because she wasn't that close)? I seriously don't find gay/lesbians any different from the norm. I definitely wouldn't have a problemw ith it but in Michiru's case...can anyone imagine having your best friend fall in love with you? I really don't know what I would do then...now that would be a touch question =)

Now that I'm pretty sure that the casualty won't be Ruka, the chances of it being Takeru just got higher. If not for Sosuke seeing him as another that stands in the way between him and Michiru, it's because he's dead set on protecting Ruka. We know Sosuke's sees Ruka as his number 1 enemy judging from him sending that letter even though Ruka had nothing to do with Michiru's 'escape' this time.

About Takeru's confession, I think he certainly has an idea what she's gonna say and how the enormity of it would impact their relationship. It's bad timing, but I don't think he said it because he expected something in return. He probably meant it as a move to reassure Ruka that he loves her as a person and would continue to despite what she might say. At least I hope that's it and not because he wants Ruka for himself. Because after what he tried to do to bring Michiru and Ruka together and being selfless so far, anything else would be out of character. I doubt Ruka will tell him now, so it'll depend on how they play out this scene in the next episode.

May 20, 2008 | Someone wrote:

Wow, I've become quite addicted to this show. And, Ruka has continued to climb the ladder as my favorite character on here. Yes, I know everyone has their 'cross' but the girl who plays her does the role extremely well. I can practically feel the angst and confusion rolling off this girl!

I would say my second would be Eri. I would like to know about Eri and Takeru's private lives a bit more. It would appear that the next episode might delve a bit further into Takeru's life. About time, I love seeing the Ruka and Michiru moments but don't forget about the other characters in the show!!

Finally, about that poll you have posted. In all honesty, I do not know how I would react. From everyone else I knew, I found out the moment I met them or found out a bit later. Talking about someone I know for years and years possibly a family member or even a buddy, I would have to be in that type of situation to know for sure. In the short run, I think I would be a bit shocked - depending on the person - before saying okay? In the long run, I have a feeling I really wouldn't care. I may not agree with those types of relationships, but I do believe that love should be nonprejudical. If someone makes you truly happy then be with that person. Their own choices in life are not mine to decide nor should I try to dictate what that person should do if they told me.

I guess I'm the carefree type that really doesn't care either way. I'm neither Judge or Excecutioner. I wouldn't want anyone to do it to me simply because of their personal preference so why should I do the same thing to someone close? So, to answer your question, I believe I wouldn't care but like anyone. You really won't know how you would react until the situation hits you.

I feel like this drama is almost a bad addiction of mine because I want to know what happens next but it's not a feel-good feeling while watching it.

Anyway, as far as the poll, I had a roommate whom I suspected was seeing someone since they were always out all of a sudden, so I suspected it was a boyfriend. When she finally told me about the other person and that it was a girl. I was shocked at the time, but I've been really supportive through her struggle with Christianity and her decision to tell members of her family.

The thing is, if you like someone of the same sex, it doesn't necessarily mean that you're attracted to everyone of the same sex. Just like you don't feel attracted and want to get with everyone of the opposite sex, someone who likes the same sex is only attracted to the people they're attracted to, so there's no reason to feel fear unless you're always afraid your friends of the opposite sex will like you too. Sorry, I guess the comment above sort of bothered me since I really stick up for my friends who are in same-sex relationships. They love who they want to love, and it just so happened that the person was of the same gender.

it never affected my relationship with my friends/that person that is close to me.

About Ruka, I actually don't think it's as simple as straight or homosexual. I don't know if there is a word for it, but what she is may not just be homosexual, but want to change her gender. Doesn't being homosexual mean that you like someone of the same gender, implying you have accepted your own?

As for the poll question, I'd like to say I'd accept but maybe in the short term, it will be shock. Not sure...

Nice recap, as always. I always keep an eye out for your updates because although i usually understand what happens, my Japanese is far from perfect and i like to know about details i'd otherwise miss.

Now as for your poll, that's an easy answer for me because it's happened on more than one occasion. I've had a few friends come out to me. Granted, i've never had a family member tell me they were attracted to someone of the same sex, but i imagine my reaction wouldn't be much different. My initial, short-term reaction is barely even a reaction. I don't act any different because they're the same person they've always been. In the long term, however, i find that it usually brings us closer together. I suppose it's probably because i'm so queer that i make Ruka look normal, so it's almost like finding a kindred spirit.

It came across my mind that Takeru has become a target for Sousuke's jealous rage, but it didn't occur to me that he could actually be the one who dies at the end. Although it's sad for me because he's my favorite character, I'm also quite curious to find out how that plays out. I don't think his ability to empathize and ease people's worries are unrealistic as you have mentioned in an earlier ep recap. Certainly, his dark past has allowed him to be empathetic to those who hurt. Being nice to his friends are his way to cope with his loneliness and fears. His not being forceful about his feelings comes from his experience of how that feels being in the receiving end of that.

For the poll: A somewhat childhood friend of mine came out during high school. My initial reaction wasn't much, I respected her choice and I wasn't really concerned about it, so I wasn't encouraging her either.

Now, I gave her a ride to school every morning because we were neighborhood friends. I was fine with still doing that even after she came out, but because people see me with her often, they started thinking that I'm going out with her.

So I guess for the long term reaction, I didn't respond well to it. But it was on a level of not liking to hear false rumors about myself. At the same time, the friendship came to a point where we don't have much to say or relate to each other. She was very opened about telling me the details and the occasional sexual details of her relationship, but I didn't want to hear it and I would feel the same way towards a friend who is heterosexual. Too much information. Maybe she took offense to that, thinking that I'm judging her, or is paranoid about me doing so. Eventually I just didn't want give her a ride anymore, and she worked something out w/ her girlfriend to bring her to school.
