Opening Theme: Last regrets by Ayana (13.3MB, for PSP/Quicktime)
Kanon: Prelude is a special DVD which is released to introduce Kyoto Animation's remake to the potential viewers. Since I've never watched the previous version of Kanon, I have no idea who these characters are supposed to be. Although I can tell right away that the male character is voiced by Tomokazu Sugita (Mayama from Honey and Clover, Kyon from Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu). This promo DVD contains some of the most beautiful character, background, and animation design. It's definitely up par to other Kyoto Animation's series such as Air and Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu. I am not that impressed with the opening and ending song though. They feel a bit...flat, for the lack of better word. If I have to compare the two, I'd say that the ending song is slightly better than the opening song. Anyway, I've decided only to screencap promo 01 and 04 since the other two promos are pretty much just repetition of these two.

Ending Theme
「風の辿り着く場所」- Kaze no Tadori Tsuku Basho by Ayana (14.8MB, for PSP/Quicktime)
I like the ending a bit more than the opening theme. It just feels a bit energetic. I am also impressed with the amount of details that Kyoto Animation put into this ending animation since normally ending animation does not look as good as the opening.
Looks beautiful! I can't wait.
You do not know the story of Kanon? Damn, you're lucky. :) If you decide to watch this series( or play the game), be prepared for a twist. ^_^
Seems like were getting similar production quality like Air, I'm definitely gonna watch this.
I never watched the old Kanon but since this version's by KyoAni, I guess it wouldn't hurt to try this when it comes out. Have absolutely no idea what it's about.
Looks interesting enough to watch out for. When was it airing again?
If I remember correctly, it's around the 5th of October this year. It'll start almost at the same time as other Autumn anime series.
argh. can ye put up a mirror download? cant seem to dl from the original
The Kanon story is very beautiful, and I'm very much looking forward to this remake. I just wish they would have made Air or SHnY into a 26-episode series like they're doing with this one.
Oh, by the way, the link to the ending song points to a file containing a Karin Ending, not a Kanon ending, lol... just thought I'd point that out.

Heh heh. The strange thing is that the opening and ending songs here were the actual original opening and ending songs in the Kanon PC game, which is what the series was based from. Heh heh.
I cannot emphasize enough for those who haven't seen Kanon, pls don't spoil yrself before the series for maximum enjoyment. :)
Man, I'd endure a mind-wipe to re-experience Kanon afresh. :)
Brief synopsis from Anime News Network, excluding the major spoilers, but may still contain some, so read at your own risk.
Changing schools is something Yuuchi is accustomed to, due to his parent’s profession, and with their recent venture to Africa, he is returning to his aunt’s home after 7 years. The time that has passed since his last visit has faded his memories of the people he knew, and the ties that bonded them to him, including his cousin Nayuki. Slowly those people, coincidently all being girls, find their way back to him. However, time has passed and things have happened in their own lives that sets the tone for the series. Secrets that are coming to surface, and memories that are returning to not only Yuuichi, but to those surrounding him. A very heartwarming tale that touches upon a spectrum of emotions, mystery, and the supernatural.
Your link for Kaze no Tadori Tsuku Basho is the Karin ED. :)
What Momotato said... I didn't even realize it until I downloaded the file and opened it up. XD
~ Noodlehead
Is anyone else having trouble downloading the ending? I think you uploaded Karin's ED not Kanon >.>;;
I sometimes forget that, for a lot people, this will be their first real introduction to Kanon. I hope they've managed to avoid spoilers all this time.
Last Regrets still gives me goosebumps... I'm glad KyoAni retained it for the OP, even if isn't standard OP material. My only complaint is with the TV-Size arrangement. They should have kicked the drums in a littler earlier.
Yeah, I can't help but envy people who don't know the story already. Still, been years since I last saw it so at least I've forgotten a few bits. Not enough though. If you liked Air you'll probably like this, if you thought Air felt rushed you'll probably like this, and if you didn't like Air... well, you probably won't like this.
Can see why you'd find Last Regrets a bit 'flat' though, considering they just kept the very beginning. It suits the OP video really well but considering the whole song's just over 6 minutes long you miss most of it (including all my favourite bits). Still.
Your link for Kaze no Tadori Tsuku Basho is the Karin ED. :)
I'm sorry about that. I was half-asleep when I was uploading it -_-;; Anyway, I've uploaded the real thing.
the male lead character (I forgot his name) is prettier then the original one. Also, the 1st year girl, who is always ill and has a sister, seems to have another color eyes.
For those of us that have gone through Kanon in 1998 or later on, this opening is very, very haunting (I came down with the same syndrome with AIR's Tori no Uta). Kanon the anime's opening is actually even stronger than the game version while paying due tribute to it. The game's OP has the famous lines of the characters show up with them while KyoAni's version doesn't show it.
By the time when you've seen Kanon in full, the OP and ED will make more sense.
Get ready for Melancholy of Aizawa Yuiichi. It's a hell of an emotional ride down memory lane in 26 episodes.
hm...i'm wondering if i should watch the old kanon or just skip to this version since i did burn the old one. i have a feeling if i watch kyoto's version first, i won't feel like watching the old one.
If you haven't seen the old TV series by this point, I'd suggest NOT watching it. While that version is decent enough as is, I'm pretty sure KyoAni's version will best it. And, should you no longer feel like watching the old version after finishing KyoAni's, it's not like you'll be missing much. It's the same story, after all.
If you still have your Kanon virginity, hold on to it until October. It should be worth it.
Oh! I cant wait! I cant wait!
Im refraining from seeing the old TV series since I know about this remake!! Looks so beautiful!
Yeay! Its so close!! So close! =)
まだ杉田さんか、キョンと凛だ ^__^;;
That's the major complaint I have because recently he's in too many such productions (and TOO frequently) so...
I never played the game but I watched the Toei Animation version and I liked the previous series in a way though the ending sucked for me. Anyway, I was hoping for a different ending but it seems to me it would be the same "royal end" unless they want to try something as "scary" as Shuffle. The OP and ED I actually like because they preserve the elements of the game and well, KyoAni's anime is intended for fans anyway so I guess that's good. Anyway, I'm looking forward to this series REGARDLESS while praying for miracle that Yuuichi will end up with the girl I love the most.
I only saw the first episode of the original Kanon. The animation and character designs looks so much better in KyoAni's version.
As most suggested, I will hold on to my Kanon virginity LOL till October ^^
The male lead looks so much more handsome, I did not really like the original character designs, they seemed chubby...
I am ultra excited about the new version of Kanon; I remember watching Kanon years ago and playing the game, so I'm pumped for its release. *hearts*
I'm happy that it looks so great!
I'm afraid that I can give those songs only mediocre mark, unless the better part was not included in the animated opening or ending; there are some abrupt transitions that does suggest some parts being cut out. Tomokazu Sugita sounds bit too mature for this role. Visually, there is much to be praised, but audially, I find what I have heard so far, below the standard KyoAni has set with Haruhi and Air; I do recognize that for most composers, Tori no Uta ( Bird's song ) would be once in their lifetime achievement so may be I am not being too fair here.
Aaah, Kanon. One of the first bishoujo games conversions which really really worked out well. I remember having difficulties getting into the show initially because of the typical "key" look of the main characters (I don't like this kind of design), but the show itself was very pleasant.
I don't wanna spoil the show for anyone who is lucky enough not to know it - but have your hankys ready. There's one show which has been heavily compared to Kanon, and its name is Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien. The stories from the five main girls are not as interwoven compared as the KGNE storyline was, but they're very well-done and touching. Expect alot of enjoyable cutesy early on - and pretty harsh drama at the end. Don't let the character designs fool you - I was not able to finish the show with dry eyes the first two times I watched it. And I'll certainly not succeed on my third.
PS: I hope that the 26 episode remark from one commenter was a mistake? It would be a bad decision. The show warrants a single-season spread.
Kanon (2006) is slated for 24 episodes. To squeeze in everything within 13 episodes would be detrimental to its' potential.
You really think so, Skane? I've played Kanon aswell, and I thought that the old single-season format was just right. Dramas don't tend to get better with more time, IMHO
24 eps? I'm a little bit doubtful, to be honest...(not that it is 24 eps, but that it is a good idea)
Same here... I certainly can't claim to be an expert on eroge- or galge- adaptation series because I generally dislike most of them (and GOD I cannot stand Itaru Hinoue's designs), but generally dramas tend to be a lot better when they are succint and compact. It takes a lot more skill to be able to create a continuously engaging story over 26 episodes or be able to create a light but beautiful drama, using just enough subtlety. I don't think the writers could handle it....
...But then again, I think this isn't aimed primarily at lovers of drama anime, more like at the hordes of Key or just Kanon fans, so I think it would be wiser for them to try and appeal to them by chucking in as much material as possible.
Despite my loathing of most anime in this genre, I was going to actually watch it if it was one season long... but I don't think I want to watch 2 seasons of it...
If they were going to focus on one girl and make the other 4 secondary characters, I would agree that 13( or less) would be sufficient.
However, it has already been stated that they were going to show the stories of ALL 5 girls. Air already felt rushed with 3 girls( 4 if you count the Summer arc), so I dread to imagine what the pacing would be like for 5 girls in 13 episodes.
For comparison, and I hope nobody minds this, Shuffle also showed the stories of 5 girls in 24 episodes.
With more episodes to play around with, they can afford to tinker with the seperate threads and merge them into one coherent storyline.
In case anybody misunderstands me, I am not advocating the cliche method of doing a girl's arc one by one before dumping them by the wayside. I would hope that Kanon (2006) do what Shuffle did and make all 5 girls RELEVENT to the storyline till the very end.
It CAN be done. Shuffle has already proven this.
Cheers.
The Toei version did a good job with 13 episodes, but it forced the story to rush from one girl to another a little more quickly than I would have liked. I'll be curious to see how KyoAni paces the story for a full 24 episodes, however. It seems like something in between would have worked best.
Here's a question, though: each girl's story has a climax (or "revelation", so to speak)... I wonder if those moments will be spread evenly over the course of the series? Kanon's story isn't exactly set up for 13 episodes of pointless slice-of-life followed by 13 episodes of ZOMG DRAMA, after all.
I watched the Toei version in 1 sitting. Kanon in Toei's hands did feel like slice of life and then nonstop drama. I felt like pleading the animators to please take more time. The revelation for many characters should've gotten more buffer time.
Kanon remake yipee
They could also do an ending like Canvas 2. Which I didn't care for. So I am hoping for the same ending as the Toei version.
In my opinion, the original series of Kanon didn't feel as rushed and condensed as Air did, and I can still watch it every time and feel the exact same way I did when I first watched it. It's *that* powerful ^_^ I love Air and Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu all the same... so a KyoAni version of Kanon (with Sugita Tomokazu as Yuuichi, omg.. X3) is a dream come true.
Oh boy, a terribly overrated series with a new, pretty remake. And with the same route again. Though it'd earn points if the OP and ED were a red herring and they did another route.
Don't be expecting much of a twist unless you've only seen very few anime. (And, seeing as you have an anime blog, I doubt that's the case.)
Well, if you keep on talk about the "twist". The "twist" would not be surprising at all probably :( (well, I know what the twist is so..)
Well and personally, I don't think doing the same route is a problem though. I'll still enjoy it for sure..
looks like it has good animation!!can't wait!!
nya!~
Being six episodes through the original Kanon (Yuuchi with the Jay Leno chin), I haven't yet reached the drama. By about this time, the characters are familiar and I have (mostly) gotten past the weird character design and into the swing of it.
So I'm not sure about stopping now - maybe I can depend on my general anime amnesia to keep me from remembering the plot, and get wrapped up in the beautiful new character designs.
Kyoto Animation definitely did a better character design than the older version. The main male lead in the older version really look chubby, have big eyes, and weird facial proportion (the mouth and the nose too close to each other...like the girls), whereas KyotoAni's version definitely look more attractive and the girsl all reminded me of Asahina Mikuru ^^;
As for the story, the older have only 13 episodes, while the remake's going to have 26 episodes...maybe they might have more details than the older version...and *SPOILER STARTS*may also have the same ending as the game version seeing how KyotoAni's Air ends accordingly to the game version (the older version of Kanon actually make their own ending which kinda upset the fans of the game thus a remake)*SPOILER ENDS*
