Hmm, the animation in this one is quite a downgrade in comparison to the last few episodes. There were even few minutes which takes place in the darkness. Plot-wise, there isn't much of a development until the last few minutes where the writers decide to unleash the revelation about Ayu as well as a rather shocking re-appearance by another character. At any rate, it seems I was completely wrong about Ayu. Although now that I know her condition, I can't help but wonder how she'll be able to be the default girl for Yuuichi. Anyway, as I mentioned before, next week's episode will be titled Finale, so I can't help but wonder if this will indeed be 26 episodes instead of 24. As a side note, I can't get over how cute Piroshiki looks. I've been smitten by the cat ever since I saw it but its cuteness completely won me over in this one.
The episode begins with Yuuichi and Nayuki sitting inside a car, which takes them to the hospital. Along the way, the pass through the accident site and notices the crushed Strawberry cake that Akiko supposedly purchased for Nayuki. At the hospital the doctor informs them that although the danger has passed, if Akiko remains in her current condition, it might endanger her life. Later on, Yuuichi informs his teacher that he's contacted his parents. The teacher wonders if there is other relative he can contact but Nayuki doesn't say a thing. After the teacher left, Yuuichi tries to reassure Nayuki that Akiko will be fine but she remains unresponsive. That night, a nurse comes to the visiting room, prompting Yuuichi to think that something has happened to Akiko. Unfortunately that's not the case and the nurse is just there to offer a blanket. The next day, Yuuichi and Nayuki finds out that there's still no change to Akiko's condition.
The doctor, however, promises to contact them as soon as there is a change to her condition. Yuuichi and Nayuki then return home and sit next to each other without saying a word until Piroshiki comes over because it is hungry. Since Nayuki is still being unresponsive, Yuuichi decides to cook for the two of them. He then asks Nayuki to eat a little bit since she hasn't had anything since yesterday. All of a sudden Nayuki starts to speak and tells Yuuichi that this is all her fault. She claims that this is because she told Akiko that she wants to eat Strawberry cake. Yuuichi tries to scold Nayuki for saying something that stupid but she simply ignores him and goes back to her own room. Later on, Yuuichi informs her that he's going to back to school since he has a lot to report to the teacher. In addition to this, they left their bags at school. Yuuichi then puts Nayuki's food in front of her door, hoping that she would eat it.
At school, Yuuichi meets Kitagawa who wants to know Akiko's condition so he gives the guy the bad news. Upon seeing Yuuichi's sad expression in reaction to a question about Nayuki, Kitagawa encourages Yuuichi to be strong and to tell him that if there is anything he can do. Yuuichi then returns to school and notices that the snow rabbit he saw before is now crushed. This reminds him of the time when he slapped a snow rabbit out of Nayuki's hand when she tried to give it to him. That afternoon, Yuuichi finds out that Nayuki still hasn't eaten her food and refuses to let him to enter her room. When Yuuichi claims that he has her bag, Nayuki simply asks him to leave it outside. Yuuichi insists that he'd like to talk to her but Nayuki asks Yuuichi to stop and apologises to him. A depressed Yuuichi goes to his room and opens a drawer. Inside, he finds the manga that Makoto loves to read and the Purikura picture they took together then.
Yuuichi is startled when Piro enters the room and remembers how he slapped the snow white out of her hands. He then remembers that Nayuki once asked him what kind of things he remembers when he sees snow rabbit and realises that Nayuki always remembered what he did to her. However, he can't seem to remember anything. The next day, Yuuichi informs Nayuki that he's going to the hospital and that he's left her food outside. Yuuichi then converse with the doctor before going to school again. After reporting to the teacher and going to the mall to shop for food, he returns home. Piro immediately greets him and directs his attention to the food he prepared for Nayuki. It seems Nayuki did eat a little bit of the food. Yuuichi then tries to enter the room and much to his surprise, the door is unlocked. Inside, he finds Nayuki in fetal position in the corner, ordering him to get out of her room because she doesn't want to meet anyone.
Instead of following her order, Yuuichi instead asks Nayuki if she likes his cooking. He knows that his cooking can't be compared to Akiko but...Nayuki not reacting whatsoever to his talk. Upon seeing this Yuuichi asks her if she intends on always blaming herself like this. When Yuuichi tells her that Akiko will survive, Nayuki retorts by asking him if he can bring miracle. Nayuki then tells him that she's always together with her mother. They've been together for years in this city, in this house because she doesn't have a father. However, if her mother is not around, she'll be really sad. Up to now, she's been doing her best. And yet because of her mistake, she's alone. Yuuichi assures her that she's not alone because she has many friends at school: Kaori, Kitagawa and her track and field practice team. In addition to this, he's also here. Nayuki is not sure about this after all he forgot all about her 7 years ago. She then cries and calls Yuuichi "Liar".
Nayuki continues her accusation by saying that Yuuichi never even reply to her letter once. Yuuichi lamely tells her that he always reads them. Nayuki tells him that because he never replied, she always thinks that it never reached him. Ouch, that really is lousy of Yuuichi. She then tells him that when they met again for the first time not too long ago, she was really afraid. She was afraid and wondering if Yuuichi has forgotten her name. Yuuichi then tells Nayuki that she remembers what happened 7 years ago during the last winter holiday in front of the station. He then apologises for what he did to her snow rabbit and hands Nayuki a red marble, asking her if she can forgive him. Yuuichi then asks her if it's not okay for him to be here with her. Much to his surprise, Nayuki confirms that she doesn't want him here. She then tells him that she can no longer laugh because the only time she can laugh was when she was with her mother.
Yuuichi tries to ease her sadness but Nayuki simply yells at him to get out of her room. That night Yuuichi wonders about 'miracle' and remembers how he has never been able to help anyone. Another flashback shows Yuuichi carrying a present for Ayu. He, however, got scolded for being late as usual. In order to cheer her up, he gave her a Taiyaki. When Ayu asked Yuuichi if he's done his preparation to go back, he denied it, saying that this is the last day after all. Ayu told him that was not the last day because they promised to meet again. Yuuichi agreed with this and promised to introduce his cousin to Ayu the next time they met. That day, Ayu climbed up to the branch again to see the scenery. When Yuuichi was going to give her the present, however, Ayu fell off the branch backwards due to strong wind. In the aftermath, Ayu told Yuuichi that she's in complete pain. Yuuichi asked him not to talk but Ayu suddenly felt that she's not in pain anymore.
Yuuichi thought that because it's not painful anymore, Ayu would be okay. Ayu, however, told Yuuichi that she could no longer move her body. Yuuichi assured her that she doesn't have to move because he will bring things to her. Ayu cried and told Yuuichi that if she can't move then she can't play with him. She then asked Yuuichi if she would play again with her next time. Yuuichi confirmed this and the two promise each other by doing Yubikiri. As soon as they've done this, however, Ayu lost consciousness and presumably passed away because she didn't react to Yuuichi anymore. In the present time, Yuuichi wakes up in terror after remembering everything about his past. He immediately runs out of the house and bumps into Kitagawa who's on his way to his house. Yuuichi tells Kitagawa that he remembers everything about Ayu. Instead of telling him about it, however, Yuuichi instead asks Kitagawa to take care of Nayuki.
Yuuichi then goes back to the forest despite the heavy snow and returns to the accident site, looking for Ayu. Despite his effort, however, he doesn't get any response. While walking around the forest looking for Ayu, Yuuichi loses his strength and falls over. While laying on the snow he wonders if he'll be able to go to Ayu's place if he keeps staying like this. Yuuichi apologises to everyone and closes his eyes. After Yuuichi passed out, someone approaches him. That someone turns out to be Makoto or her apparition. Makoto gets closer to Yuuichi and puts her body on top of him. She then calls his name, causing Yuuichi to regain his consciousness. When he looks up, he sees a bright light and within it, he can see himself giving Ayu the present. Ayu wondered what it could be and upon opening it, found out that it's a read headband. The episode then ends with Ayu promising that she would wear the headband the next time she meets Yuuichi.

Impression:
What a depressing episode. If it's not for the ending song, this would have been a complete downer. First thing first, I feel sorry for Nayuki. Yuuichi is such a lousy cousin/friend. I can understand why Nayuki ended up thinking that her mail never reached him. I think if a friend sends you a mail/email, you have to at least reply to it once in a while. Yeah, everyone is busy these days but imagine if you're the one who sends the email/mail and never got the reply from the other person. I'm pretty sure you'd feel pretty lousy too. You'd be wondering if the mail never reached the person or if your friend doesn't have the time, have forgotten about you or doesn't care about you anymore. Anyway, I wonder what really would happen to Nayuki if Akiko passed away. I know she said that she can't live without her mother but sooner or later she'd have to face the reality that her mother won't always be there for her. At any rate, I hope she'll be okay in the next episode.
Ayu's revelation surprised me a little bit. I theorised that she fell from the tree but I thought she was just heavily injured not dead as implied by this episode. At any rate, her death was a bit mortifying. No wonder Yuuichi suffered selective amnesia as to what happened 7 years ago. Hearing your best friend/childhood crush saying that she can't move her body any longer is disturbing to say the least. What I don't understand here is the role of Makoto in the last few minutes of the episode. I thought she's already dead but in that case, why did she appear to wake Yuuichi up? I also thought that Yuuichi would die and what happens from here on forward is just him living in the after life. It's just that this situation was kind of implied with him looking up towards the bright light, which usually is associated with death. Well, it's either that or Nayuki and Kitagawa managed to find his body in the forest and save him in time before he dies from cold.
Hah, second and fourth picture comments were lawl inducing. And...the urge to spoil myself by reading/looking at the rest of the entry is too strong...ARGH. /endrambling
I really don't see why everyone's convinced that Ayu died; Toei didn't really handle the revelation any differently, and everyone seemed to take it for granted there that she'd survived the fall.
@ Tim
Well,
[WARNING FOR OTHER VIEWERS: SPOILER!]
Did that spoiler tag work?
...Ayu's dead!?!
...Ohhh...Okami-sama...miracles do happen...
...now about that ninja maid I wanted...
Nightingale - yeah, it worked fine.
My response is similar: "WTF?" is pretty much how I'd sum up my response upon seeing what appears to be Makoto there. Isn't she 'dead'?
Wtfbbq Makoto
Hmmmm... one thing I can safely say about Kanon:
- T
@Nightingale
Yes, I know - I just can't see why viewers are responding so differently to Ayu's fall here than they did when it happened in Toei's Kanon. I don't recall hearing any 'OMG Ayu died?!?!?!' comments when the fall happened there, yet the scene wasn't handled all that differently. Adding to my bemusement is the fact that some of the people making the 'OMG Ayu died' comments have actually watched the Toei version.

..... *puts hands up*
I haven't seen TOEI version so there's a likelihood I'll be wrong in my comments/prediction. I simply approach this from a first time viewer's POV.
Perhaps it's because i've seen Toei's version but Ayu's arc feels so weak.
I would have liked it if kyoani did a shuffle and pushed one of the other girls as the 'final' girl rather than the orthodox route.
@ Tim
Ah, i definitely see ur point there. Maybe KA really did make Ayu look very "dead" in their work =P plz ignore my trashtalk heheh
@ Garten
Lol dont worry no one is directing the blame on yee, speculations are always interesting to read.
@ Sorael
Well, it cant really be helped, without Ayu's arc as a conclusion, too many questions will be left hanging, as Tim had already pointed out many times in his comments for previous episodes. This poses a great challenge even for ingenius studios like KA. As I pointed out somewhere b4, they already showed minor flaw in terms of developing the relationship between the present Ayu and U1: because Ayu's main progress was so spread out in the whole series, the flashback did not interact well enough with Ayu and U1's daily encounter. Indeed this is a small rant I have as a 49% Ayu fan (51% Mai.)
And lastly, add me to the list of those who screamed: WTFBBQ Makoto!? USODA!!!
BUT THERE WILL be just 24 episodes!!!!
It is very sad 'couse I love Kanon!! I saw the original series and cried in the end when Ayu fell from tree and got in the hospital, where SHE SLEPT in COMA
for few years and then woke up and REUNITED WITH YUICHI!!! T_T
BUT IT WAS a GREAT STORY!! 110% SUPER!!!!!
I found out the LAST's EPISODES NAME!!!!!!!!
"Canon of the End of a Dream ~kanon~"
If you know russian or whatever you can go here
http://www.world-art.ru/animation/animation.php?id=5832
and you will see all with your own eyes!!
Does it mean we only have 2 more episodes to go? I can't believe my favourite show will end so soon.
And poor Nayuki. I hope Yuuichi is off to la-la land or wherever Ayu is right now. He doesn't deserve Nayuki.
This is my interpretation of that last scene, which never ever occured even in the game itself:
At that point, U1 collapse and start remembering all that he lost, reflecting on his banishing his memory 7 years ago/betrayal of promise that had cause all the suffering for everyone. His guilt and depression led him to give up hope. His line "If I stay like this, would I be able to meet her?" is a clear indication that he had lost all hope for miracle.
Makoto's reappearance, not only serves as a single miracle, but also relightens U1's hope, and thus continue forth. Her appearance achieved an excellent continuity to the theme of this episode. It also traces all the way back to the end of ep10, where U1 and Amano (anyone remember her?) talking about a wish for miracle, that this wish, in a sense has been granted. And of course, a dramatic way of showing Makoto repaying U1 for his caring back in her arc.
Hope this helps =)
I forgot to mention that, at this scene, Makoto most likely used her own power to save U1. So yea that wasn't U1's dream or afterlife stuff heheh.
Wasn't it a fact right from the start that it would be 24 episodes long? Thought even you mentioned it before the show started. Anyhow
Final episode title is 「夢の果てのカノン ~kanon~」.
Yep... Just 2 episodes - 2 weeks is left!
And...jep, that is a totle of Kanon's last episode, dana(but) a people like me who dosn't know beautifule japanese must exept the subbed in english or written in roman!
Well it's just my thogts!
(I live in Latvia but still love almoust all japanese, althought my parents hate it T_T, and usually are mad at me because of that "I'm too old for that (I'm 18) and bla bla bla...)
Demo minna genki dashite!
There will be many, many cool anime in April!!!(like "Gekijouban Shakugan no Shana" and athers)
If you whant to know more - go here http://www.world-art.ru/animation/year.php?year=2007&month=04
-there will be all anime, that will be airing in Aprif of 2007!!!
The "most reliable" source about episode numbers has been syoboi's site, which lists all exact airdates. In the middle of the season, he suddenly listed 26 full episodes, so everybody (including me) assumed that it would be 26 after all.
However, recently he fixed his entry and placed the "final" marke to 24. Therefore, this is what it's gonna be.
lol i agree, the way they set it up in this ep (specially the part where yuuichi gives the headband) would make the audience think ayu got lil bump on the head from the fall but was ok later on, on that same day.
Nayuki really reminds me of Mai in these scenes
This is the first time I've seen snow portrayed as the enemy. It's always been fluffy, pretty eye candy. Suddenly towards the end of this episode, even before Yuuichi says goodbye and sorry everybody, snow becomes less cozy. I thought it was an interesting divergence.
I cried... T.T
The BGMs greatly increases the melancholy level of the episode
*watches it again and continues to cry*
Makoto's appearance reminds me of Yuki Onna, a character from Japanese folklore who causes unwary travelers caught in inclement weather to freeze to death. (She appears in Akira Kurosawa's film Dreams, see also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuki_Onna.) Let's hope Makoto has better intentions.
My interpretation of this episode is that NAYUKI GOT SHAFTED :(. That is all.
Overall enjoyable episode with quite a few moments, but since I've been spoiled silly, nothing was really shocking.
hi im sorry, but when its ready kanon's chapter 22.
Arigato.
Damn! You just posted this and alreadly there are many comments.
I alreadly know what is going to happen, I will just see HOW it happens.
Now that I think about it I don't think i've ever seen Nayuki smile when she was alone with Yuuichi use less its her saying "Fight! Fight!" but other then that this ep made a lot of since and since my theory has paid of about ayu dying from last ep I think its going to be all down hill for yuuichi forcing him to become alone/breaking down completely.
I think people should stop presuming how the SHOW is going to end, because at this point I could care less if the rest of the episodes were nothing like the game and had an all-out original plot-twist. And it just might. So you know what, when looking at this anime look at it as a standalone please... Some things you may just have to accept as the plot from the anime, and they've done an awesome job so far so it shouldn't really matter if they're prepping for a surprise ending (which would be amazing if they did...).
Wow Makoto is back but I don't think its her being back to life its just her spirit trying to protect Yuuichi but she will probably never be able to get a real body again...well never say never this is the land of miracles xD cool update just 2 more episodes to go to this series that has made me cry at least once with each girl xD
You are crazy, Makoto is a fire fox, the real Yuki Onna is Shiori. She eats ice cream on winter, she has an ice beam, shoots ice blades and can summon a blizzard to freeze you to death.
Yuki Onna sounds like a superhero
hi. this is my first time posting on this site(although i have been viewing it for a year). has nayuki's arc finally ended? or is it before the final episode?
p.s.
has anyone played the EFZ fighting game version of kanon?
I feel like Makoto's appearence was just to appear, nothing more. O_o
I mean, she didn't even wake him up, some lights do. At first I thought Yuuichi may be dying so the spirit came to look for him; then again no, except like dementors, she was waiting for him to die hoho. So I suppose it's plain fanservice and a glimpse showing Makoto is still there in the forest, and glomped him because she had the chance. *cough*
lol @ Ritsuka
and did anyone wondered that those lights might be headlights? U1 WAS on a road, if you didn't noticed.
Makoto.....maybe she got powerful enough to become a part of the forest ~_~ i dunno.
Wow I was so surprised when Ayu was falling from the tree... I had some idea that she was going to get hurt but that was so much worse. I also thougt that Yuuichi would at least try to break her fall so to speak but it must have been too shocking to see. Now im interested in if Yuuichi actually carries her back to the hospital or at least back down to the city but that would be prety devestating to have to carry your friend/crush who's dead...
Woops forgot to add soemthing...
Also remember awhile back when Akiko had said something about that they cut down that tree or something along those lines to herself? Well would this mean that she knows what happened to Ayu along time ago? And if so then wouldn't she be wondering why shes back....but I guess it could be the same thing with Makoto since she just didn't come home one day either.
Theory: Yuuichi dies. Self-sacrifice? To be with Ayu? Ayu isn't gone yet? Because he dies, Akiko is fine because it's a miracle?
And yes, that was just a random guess based on nothing at all.
I don't think Ayu died. Otherwise she wouldn't have felt weak in the hospital during one of the previous episodes. *smile*
I love the captions about Kitagawa being a harem member.^^ I don't really know the significance of Makoto's reappearance but I'm glad she appeared. There haven't been any uguu's, nyu's, ahaha's or nyo's throughout the entire episode. I was hoping she'd say auu and she did. Yay!
Makoto is dead. . Although very briefly, It was stated way early in the anime that as a kid, Yuichi liked an older girl who also had the name Makoto. She was a neighbor who stayed in the house next to his aunts. Thats the girl who rescues him in this episode. As for Makoto, the main character in the first 10 episodes. She died and was left on the grassy hill where Yuichi first found her as a fox. Just wanted to clear that up since I noticed a lot of people going WTF MAKOTO IS ALIVE?
