This is another enjoyable episode for the series and I think it's largely due to Makoto. Of all the girls that have appeared thus far, I think she's actually my favourite. I am glad that she seems to get more focus and time than the rest of the girls lately. Come to think of it, the amount of screen time that a girl gets does not necessarily correspond with the quality of story that she gets. For example, Nayuki appears a lot in almost every episode but she barely gets interesting storyline while Mai doesn't get that much screen time but seems to have some interesting storyline. The only exceptions to this are Ayu and Makoto who get good amount of screentime and interesting storyline.
The episode begins with Makoto sneaking into Yuuichi's room. When she's about to open his blanket, however, the light gets turned on and Yuuchi appears behind the door. Makoto is surprised to see the guy and pretends that she just wants to play with him. Yuuichi, of course, doesn't believe her since she has a scissors in her hand. Makoto quickly pretends that she just want to use it to make paper plane with Yuuichi. To prove her point, she goes through his table and cuts out 3 pieces of papers from his notebook and uses one of them to make paper plane. Yuuichi is horrified to see this because Makoto has just cut out his homework for tomorrow. Before Yuuichi can get pissed off at her, however, Makoto already bids "Good night" at him and runs out of the room. The next morning, Nayuki demonstrates her love for Strawberry Jam by spreading gobs of it on her toast. She even claims that she can eat 3 pieces of toast with it.
Makoto then joins Yuuichi and Nayuki for breakfast because Akiko woke her up so she won't be late for her job. In order to energize Makoto, Akiko decides to whip out her special jam. Nayuki and Yuuichi immediately weasel their way out of eating it by saying that they're already full. Makoto on the other hand, is interested so Akiko puts on a gobfull of it on top of a toast before handing it to Makoto. Nayuki is horrified to see her mother placing so much jam on the toast but there's nothing that she or Yuuichi can do but watching Makoto eating it. Not surprisingly, she doesn't like it either and screams "Auu" when Akiko tells her there's more to go around. On their way to school, Nayuki notices a cat sitting on top of a wall and immediately tries to touch it. Yuuichi warns her that she has an allergic reaction to the cut but Nayuki doesn't care. As Nayuki jumps up and down to reach the cat, Yuuichi claims that he doesn't know which one is the animal.
At school, Nayuki is suffering from allergy but Jun thinks that Yuuichi is being mean to her. Kaori, on the other hand, knows right off the bat that Nayuki is suffering from allergic reaction to cat. Nayuki explains that Yuuichi tried to stop her but she wasn't strong enough to resist the cute animal. This suddenly reminds them that they haven't seen Yuuichi around. As it turns out the player is checking out on Shiori, who's been waiting outside again. Yuuichi tells her that if she's that well then she should attend the class. Shiori tells him that although she feels better, the doctor think she's not ready for it. Upon hearing this, Yuuichi suggests that Shiori goes back home and sleep. Shiori, however, reminds him about his promise about making 10 metre tall snowman. After Yuuichi is done with Shiori, he moves on to Mai and Sayuri so he can get his free lunch. During lunch, he asks Mai if she managed to get rid of the ghost.
Sayuri is, of course, confused by the conversation. Especially since Mai is unresponsive to Yuuichi's question until he asks her to either say "Yes" or "No". As it turns out, the answer is a "No". Yuuichi then asks Sayuri if it's not too much of a problem for her to make this much food for them but Sayuri doesn't seem to mind since she wakes up early in the morning. She also tells him that she sleeps early at night, around 11PM. After lunch, Yuuichi meets up with Nayuki again, who complains about how her tears won't stop. Yuuichi simply smiles and tells her not to get close to cat again next time. While on his way to the city, Yuuichi gets tackled by Ayu and lands face down on a snow. After Ayu apologises, Yuuichi starts talking about the 'interesting' film that they saw yesterday. Ayu immediately responds to this with "Uguuu". I think I understand her now. She's like Smurf, no matter what the question is, her answer is "Uguu" in different intonation.
Ayu then tells Yuuichi that today she's in town to look for her missing item. Unfortunately, she still can't remember what it is that she's looking for. Yuuichi tells her that he'd like to help but he'd like to go home early today. Ayu tells him not to worry because she's thinking of going home too since it's cold today. After Ayu left, Yuuichi finds Makoto standing in front of amusement centre, looking at high school girls taking pictures of themselves inside a photo booth. Yuuichi tells her that if she'd like to do the same, she should have asked Ayu to accompany her. Makoto denies that she'd like to have her picture taken and proceeds to walk home. As she and Yuuichi left the area, a girl called Amano looks at the two with a surprise look on her face. One of the girls who are inside the photo booth think they should invite her to take pictures together but the others are reluctant. Not that it matters since Amano already sees them and nods her head before leaving the area.
As Yuuichi and Makoto walk home together, he questions her about her nursery job but Makoto becomes upset when he thinks that she didn't do her best at the job. She refuses to walk home with him and goes off on her own. When Yuuichi walks away from her, however, she follows him from behind and hides behind a pole when Yuuichi turns around. Even though it's obvious that the pole is not enough to cover her body, Yuuichi pretends as if he doesn't notice her. He then turns around suddenly, spotting Makoto in the process. Despite this, she still claims that she's not following him and immediately runs to another direction. Yuuichi, however, is not fooled and waits for her and when catches he her red-handed, asks her to come home with him. As they walk together, a cat approaches and strokes its head against Makoto's leg. Yuuichi encourages Makoto to pet the cat and promises to buy her Niku-man if she does it.
Yuuichi keeps his promise and buys Makoto some Niku-man. When Makoto is about to eat one, however, the cat takes her Niku-man and runs away with it. Makoto runs around in circles trying to catch it until Yuuichi stops her and give her another one. While the two stand on top of a bridge, Yuuichi wonders what they should do with the cat. He wants to bring it home but Nayuki's allergy makes it impossible. Makoto doesn't care either way and coldly tells Yuuichi that animals are usually thrown away when they are not needed anymore. In addition to this, she thinks it's better to return them to the wild before the animal gets used to being raised by people in peaceful situation. Yuuichi doesn't understand what Makoto talks about but Makoto suddenly lets go of the cat, sending it falling into the road. Thankfully a truck happens to pass by before the cat lands on the road, so the animal doesn't suffer any injury. Despite this Yuuichi gets angry at Makoto and almost slaps her.
Yuuichi manages to restrain himself but Makoto is already upset at the whole thing and runs away from him. That night, she doesn't return home so a worried Yuuichi decides to look for her. He decides to make a stop at school to ask Mai if she saw Makoto tonight. Much to his surprise, Mai suggests that he goes to the hill to look for her because she has a feeling that Makoto might be there. True enough, Yuuichi finds Makoto sitting on the hill, petting the cat and giving it half of her Niku-man. Because she's tired after looking for the cat, Makoto ends up sleeping on the grass. Yuuichi decides to take her home but as he does this, he doesn't notice that a fox has been observing him from a far. That night, Makoto is awakened and is surprised when she finds herself back in the house. Yuuichi tells her that the reason is because this house is her home. As they have late night dinner together, Makoto looks at Yuuichi, Nayuki, and Akiko but her vision seems to be blurry. The episode then ends with a shot of the forest on the hill.
Impression:
This episode basically confirms my suspicion that Makoto is not human. I think the biggest clue here is her blurry vision. Unless she suffers from vision impairement, which I doubt since she doesn't complain about her vision being strange, then I think the reason her eyes see things differently is because she's not human. I remember people keep mentioning that she's a fox in the forest a few episodes ago. I thought they were joking around back then but now I think that's probably true especially after the little fox in the forest looked at her and Yuuichi strangely. That also explains her animal-like behaviour such as the "Auu" voice that she often makes. I also remember how much she likes Oden back in episode 1. IIRC, fox spirits have affinity for Oden, or at least that's what the Japanese folklore claims. Last but not least, Mai is able to correctly guesses her whereabouts, which to me suggests that she knows what Makoto really is and where Makoto usually tend to go. Also, didn't she try to pet a fox back in episode 1?

One advice: don't get too attached with Makoto. You'll regret it.
Well then don't say it, and if u do put it in a spoiler. This episode may as well be the direction in which the series is heading so I'm keen to find out.
>>I thought they were joking around back then but now I think that's probably true especially after the little fox in the forest looked at her and Yuuichi strangely.>>
That's the way stories should be made, that even if some jerk decides to spoil the story, that it is so implausible that people would think the guy was joking
Also, didn't she try to pet a fox back in episode 1?
I believe that was Nayuki who was trying to pet a fox. But wow, I did not see that fox connection until now and I can totally see where it's coming from.
If a series has already had a release and somebody types a spoiler, is it still a spoiler? *zen silence*
haha i think that the captions on the screencaps are very funny!
Yeah, this episode starts to make everything look clearer. It's hard to believe at first because some of the plot is quite outlandish, in a way. Now I can't wait to see the Ayu and Shiori's story.
I suspected that fox since the first episode...
That is... I think that anyone who have watched AIR, like me, and knowing Kanon was made by KEY, the same people behind AIR, would suspect that fox right away.
And I believe that what Mai was petting in the first episode was a doggie. Maybe she has some special relation with animals...
Thinking about it again... In japanese folklore, aren't the foxes spirits fond of playing pranks? And Makoto does it all the time...
Comparing to the Previous Kanon, it really seems like Kanon Remake is moving in a very fast speed...(Kinda like about 1/2 of Series then the Mai Arc came)
Well, it does seem to merge some of the Girl's Scene together with the story and also have some scenes that appeared in game but Previous Kanon didn't mention....
Wonder how Kyoto would managed to Drag it to a 24 Episode Series.....hm~
Thanks for doing this every week. It's nice to see read the perspective of someone who's never played the game or watched the Toei version before. I hope you'll keep it up to the end.
...but foxes usually get away with their pranks while Makoto always gets her ass kicked...
...so really if anything she is a tanuki...
this is my first time seeing the series also, i think you're right about the fox thing. mai treats her like one and the way she moved when she was caught with the midnight snack. Kyoto is great for all of those really subtle hints.
Another hint:
This is the time to start remembering earlier episodes! Ep. 1: Nayuki tries to pet a fox on the hill (the same hill, I believe, that Makoto goes to that night), and then tells Yuuichi that foxes on that hill are special, and there's even an old legend about them. Strikes me that our little Makoto is probably fulfilling a part of that legend.
But don't take my word for it, I'm completely new to Kanon myself. Use your own logic.
On the downside, my logic (and the hordes of spoiling fans :p) are warning me that Bad Things™ are going to happen to our poor Makoto soon... :(
I feel proud. This episode basically confirms my theory that I made in the comments for episode 5.
Also, like I said before:
Fenrir>>>One advice: don't get too attached with Makoto. You'll regret it.
Law 324 of Anime: It is irresistible to Otaku to NOT spoil a remake. Not to mention all the while doing it with quasi-aplomb and pseudo-imperiousness.
...foxes make horrible pets...
...they smell bad...it's oil gland thing so washing doesn't really help...
...they are just smart enough to be troublesome...yet are stubborn so to be hard to house train...
...and they are aggressive...and big enough to hurt small children...
...plus they are more tempermental than most house cats...
...terrible pets...
"...terrible pets..."
But apparantly cute teenage girls. ;)
here is a possible hint/spoiler:
min:21.46
Makoto: What did you say to me?
Yuiichi: "Rest in Peace", was it?
Makoto: Don't kill me like that!
Huzzah! More evidence that supports [some of] my earlier predictions about Makoto (ie. that she was a fox spirit). Although she's not quite the fox spirit I imagined, since she doesn't have any powers and doesn't seem magically tied to Yuuichi or Nayuki. Instead, it seems that she's only capable of turning human, and she's too used to city-life and doesn't want to go back to the wild?
Come to think of it, the mysterious nature of all the characters has now been either flat-out stated (ie. Mai), or has had many, many hints dropped about it (ie. Makoto; Ayu; and to a lesser extent, Shiori). Now it's just a matter of the show filling in the details.
I do wonder how all the apparent supernatural things will be made to fit with the Kanon world. It seems pretty unusual for Yuuichi to meet a self-proclaimed demon hunter AND spirits.
...but then, most stories DO tend to make the supernatural an "in for an inch, in for the whole mile" type of thing. So, being connected to the supernatural might be rare, but those who are connected become completely surrounded by it? Strange gimmick.
I finally saw the episode, and I'm sure I saw the fox watching Yuuichi had more than one tail. According to monstropedia (http://www.monstropedia.org/index.php?title=Kitsune), it's a young kitsune if it only has two tails.
I'm curious as to how Nayuki will play into the entire story. As of right now, she's extremely boring. I haven't seen the first anime but I'm guessing her story will be told right before Ayu's?
Makoto does look like a fox... in a way.
The blur vision is just something KyoAni added to symbolise "Ah Family. I am wanted by these people"
Or so I think.
Neko kawaii!!!!!!!!! I still wonder though, by the look on Makoto's face, she looked only half conscious of her actions when she let go of the cat. Yuuichi seemed to snap her out of it and to have some respect for animals. I can't blame him for getting angry since Mokoto does not seem like that type of person, and ends up surprisng him by doing something so cruel.
Makoto was quite annoying this episode. Her behaviour makes me want to slap her, actually.
Someone said that Yuuichi slapped her when that happened in the older version, I wonder why they changed that scene.
I hope I change my mind about Makoto in the next episode though.
Ayu is great, can't wait for any of her moments.
It's just to show how fond of her Yuuichi is. He hits her all the time, but they're just the type of hitting you get between siblings and in Yuuichi's case even to the point of how he shows his fondness.
When it came down to true anger though, Yuuichi didn't have the heart to hit her.
Her hair, especially when parted & tied in ribbons, resembles fox tails! (Not to mention its colour, obviously)
actually the biggest clue would be her agile body. Remember the refrigerator scene?
...stop reading so much into things people...
...not every little thing in this show is some big hint at the final truth...
...lotsa kids are agile...they are small and light...good luck catching my little brother when he really gets into the mood...
...maybe Makoto has bad vision and need glasses or she caught a cold sleeping on that hill...I get blurred vision when I have a fever...
...the truth whatever it is will eventually come out...don't get too attached to your theories...it is only episode 7 you knpw...
zzz...what if someone who had watched the Toei version tells you Makoto is a Kitsune?
...abao...
...I watched the toei version...
...I know how Makoto's story ends...
Just because a cat scratches it's head once doesn't mean it has fleas, it means it has an itch. =p
The blurry vision was a special effects that KyoAni made in place of Makoto crying in happiness when she was brought back home by Yuuichi. I... can only say that people should not get too attached to any of the girls in the show...
"I... can only say that people should not get too attached to any of the girls in the show..."
Little late for that. They're going to great lengths to make sure we do.
...I can't help it. Every time I see those last few scenes... Yuuichi telling Makoto that she's family, and that this is her home... It makes me almost cry.
I cannot help but hope that somehow things will turn out for the better anyway.
I feel my heart breaking already. ;~; Auuuu. I think I may know what order they're doing things...slightly. I've seen the Toei version.
heh Garten, love those comments u leave on the pictures XD
