No, I haven't lost my mind. I had a choice between this or Ayakashi Ayashi and I'm not sure if I like Ayakashi Ayashi. Although I may change my mind later on. Besides, people always say, "better the devil you know" and I certainly know this devil. :D I mean at least with this series, I know what I'm in for. The first episode is actually not too bad either. Maybe I'm just feeling nostalgic and would probably get bored of this in the next two or three weeks. Having said that, the new series seems to have better style, better scares, and there is a brand new arc added to the usual one off cases. Anyway, the OP theme is not included in this version so maybe it'll come out with the 2nd episode. The ED theme, however, is included in the episode and it's a rather pleasant song delivered by Noto Mamiko, the voice of Enma Ai.
Rough summary:
Impression:
There is a clear parallel between Ai and Onda that the writers want to emphasise in this episode. Both of them were disappointed when they find out that they too will go to Hell for seeking 'justice' after what has been done to them. And because their hatred overwhelmed them, they could not stopped themselves from exacting vengeance on those who wronged them. I just realised that all of these times Ai does not actually live in Hell itself. I mean she rows the boat but she mostly lives in that unique scarlet world of hers as if she's in some kind of purgatory, trying to pay for her sins. Although I'll bet she'll have to live there if she killed Hajime and Tsugumi last season. If one thinks about it, Ai does get it easy. Instead of being tortured, she has to pay for her sins by taking other people to hell. I mean, she probably feels guilty when innocent people gets sent to Hell because she gives them those straw dolls. However, worse things could have happened to her.
On the other hand, Onda is one unfortunate girl. She didn't do anything wrong and yet she got harassed like this. It makes me wonder how on Earth a psychotic teacher like Kamishiro got hired in the first place anyway? And come to think of it, why is it that Ai's associates can easily place themselves inside the school and pose as teachers/garderner without anyone noticing the discrepancies? Anyway, in the end, Maki didn't really have much choice really. I supposed she can try to run but there's a likelihood psychotic Kamishiro may able to catch up with her. And in her panic, pulling that string may have seen like an instinctive thing to do. I am glad that the punishment that Kamishiro receives is as brutal as what she's about to do to her own student. Having bug coming out of one's mouth is an idea that creeps me out. It's unfortunate that Onda still has to put up with another person who harassed her but there's a possibility that Nakase regretted what she did.
Overall, this was not a bad episode to start the series. I think as the series progressed, Ai's background will get fleshed out a bit more. The same thing can be said about her 3 helpers, who I think will get more focused this season. Sooner or later, these 3 will probably encounter some people that they like and don't want to send to Hell. That will be nice to see for a change. Technicality-wise, Ai gets a brand new kimono in this episode. I am not sure what she did to deserve this but I supposed being able to restrain herself from killing Hajime and Tsugumi could be counted as one. The animation for "Ippen shinde miru" sequence is slightly tweaked now. In general, however, it doesn't make it more exciting. I really hope they change it a little bit from episode to episode so that it doesn't look like recycled animation. Last but not least, I'm keen to see the new character. I'm just hoping that she is not added to be some kind of cute mascot for the series.
Ending Theme: 「あいぞめ」(Aizome) by Noto Mamiko
Download: AVI format (30.6MB) | AVI mirror (23.4MB) | PSP format (coming soon)
The ending theme features gorgeous static still as usual. The song is pretty good too although at one point in the song, Noto Mamiko seems to have difficulty reaching the tone required for the song so the BGM covers it up immediately. ^^;;
I thought the first story wasn't particularly original, but it featured things that i loved in Jigoku Shoujo: the end where Onda finds out about the pink trombones being one of them.
They didn't go easy on the teacher either, you rarely get to see crazy characters like that. It almost looked like a yuri scene when she climbed on Onda to pour the acid-like liquid onto her. I'm glad to see nothing was toned down because of the earlier timeslot.
It feels good to have you back, Enma Ai.
I rather like the way they're drawing Enma Ai this season - especially with that scene in the spring and the earlier one where she's talking with Onda... she seems less 'static' than she did last time around, which is a good thing (more expressions means more 'moe' ;)). That, and having them all appear in lab coats was kinda cool.
At least this time, the punishment WAS creepy... and this combines one element I liked most from one of last season's eps (the one where that woman didn't run away from the twisted mother and son who made dolls, instead choosing to send the mother to Hell, only to find out that the punishment continued because she didn't choose to escape instead, and was stuck going to Hell AND with the same mess she was in before) with the idea that 'even sending people to Hell wont' solve your issues'... and of course, more Enma Ai.
Let's hope they get the balance right this season - I don't want 12 eps of fillers again.
Well even if this season doesn't turn out the way people want it to-which is unlikely if they're adding new characters the very first episode-I'll still watch it because I love Ai and the storyline is just too interesting. Also, I like how they portray the darker side of humanity.
0_0 wow, never thought you would actually watch the second season. Quality seems a little better though.
Wow this season looks amazing can't wait till its subbed. ^^
"I had a choice between this or Ayakashi Ayashi and I'm not sure if I like Ayakashi Ayashi."
I know that Ayakashi has monsters and the like but is it considered a horror show? I think it's more shounen action than horror.
It's nice to hear Mamiko sing again. Her voice is so soothing.
Nice to see a review here
I'd like to watch it but...
I just don't see any fansub very excited with this show...
I hope I'm wrong
So THAT'S what the weird pink flower light thing was. That's very interesting.
Poor Onda. This feels very much like episode 2 of last season. She had to pull the string because her life was in danger, but it's even worse since she's still being tormented.
Maybe it's just my eyes, but Ai looks more human and less doll-like.
Shinsen said they will translate it.

Oh, when I said that I wasn't thinking of comparing the two series in terms of genre. I just wanted to get a good sleep and I couldn't have one if I cover both of them. Plus I'm about to go out with a few friends today so I really needed that sleep since we usually end up staying until late. ^^;;
Android 21 3/7 - as I said, less 'static'. She's not the walking loli statue of last season... which in my mind's a good thing. She actually has expressions beyond the 'long stare' and 'a slight frown'. :D
A new season comes with new grudges to be avenged. Will Hajime and Tsugumi be back? I doubt they will, since no matter what they did they couldn't stop Ai. But then again, they are after all Sentarou's descendents. ^^
Now I wonder if the "Jigoku Shounen" Gill DeRomfeld be back from hell, since he wants to have a rematch with Ai.
I don't like this new kimono... too bright and flashy, and it does not have a "moving pattern" like the first one...
Did anyone notice that savage genius did some work on Aizome?
The new season is totally superb and amazing; I really love Enma Ai's new look! I'm sure this season will turn out to be an excellent one.
yeah!! jigoku shojou is back
and i like when enma ai said "ippen shinde miru" that's was so cool
and i can see more tsukumori ren ^_^
Whoa! Bloody.....someone has to sub this. It looks flippin awesome! I've always been a fan of Ai and her hell-like appearance. I enjoyed the first season well enough to watch the second as well, i can't wait for subs!
The animation looks really pretty, better than the first one and the ED animation looks really pretty too~~

I wonder if Hajime and Tsugumi will be around, though I doubt they are no longer curious about enma ai ^^;
I said aloud bikurishita when I saw this. You wrote a few entries back that you wouldn't do Jigoku 2, but am happy you have, even though you may not stick with it ^^;;
I didn't look at every single cap 'cause I don't want to be spoiled too much, but from the few seen, it definetely looks much better than the first season.
And I hope Hajime+Tsugumi won't be in this. "Their story" has already been done, and it'd be more interesting to learn more about the "hell system" and that damn spider XD
1) ED is nice and will probably grow on me; the chord that ends the song is pretty nice. It is however not as amazing as last season's Karinui.
2) Glad they're starting out with the more complex scenarios right at the beginning, instead of the simple one criminal one victim structure.
3) Needs more Tsugumi. Maybe by this series she's become less of a loli.
i cant wait to see it..although i really enjoy ur summary....hhee
I agree about the question "Will Gilles be back for a rematch"" but just one little thing: his name is not "De Romfeld" but "De l'Enfer" (from Hell). Once again the japanese writer tried to put in some cool-looking french name and smegged it up big style, structure-wise.
Now my own wonderings: the girl who put staples in this week's victim's sleeves, do you think she was just plain mean ir that she was another victim of the evil teacher?
whoa!!! so cool! ^^ you write these summaries so well! ^^ thank you for the summaries! ^^ i cant watch all the episodes yet in youtube...lols..so i read yur summaries...^^
i want to know more about Resha. looks like she does not appear often. who is the teacher that she against? can email me the ans?
If you watched the fansub version of jigoku shoujo a.k.a. "hell girl" then you'll know that there is NO SUCH CHARACTER in any episode of the entire series. Either this is a trick question cooked up by those sick bastards in AXN, or "resha" is a substitute name used in the dubbed Animax version.
Look for resha in the website of hell girl on animax-asia.
I kinda liked the first ep. its a great start but having just finished jigoku shoujo to continuing to the second season sill made the animation a tad repetitive. i'm really GLAD that enma ai at least changed her clothing (how did that happen?)
is it me or does this episode seem to be more...aggresive than the 1st season? somehow....
and that scene totally screamed yuri to me ^__^
i love the new season of jigoku shoujo!!!!!!^^
i haven't seen jigoku shojo futakomri yet but i have seen only jigoku shojo though...i truly liked the movie and it was very sad somehow...
Hi, good pick for a series to cover, but AYAKASHI AYASHI is definitely worthwhile. I wasn't sure if I would like it either from the first episode, but give to episode 4 and 5 and I was hooked, and the arc of where the series would go was pretty clear. The main character has substantial depth, which is explored fully in later episodes, and very satisfying. I love this series.
Thanks again for your comments on JIGOKU SHOUJO FUTAMOKORI, which I decided to pick up because of your comments. Your page is a major source of enlightenment for me and what I should be watching.
Best,
John
