Although this is slightly predictable, I can't say that I don't like the ending for this series. I think the main problem that I have with this episode and the series in general is that it spends too much time on the revenge-wisher of the week before the series turned its head on the main plot involving Ai. As a result, there are some mysteries which never got to be resolved here and it feels a bit unsatisfying. As it is now, Jigoku Shoujo is partly saved thanks to its last few episodes. However, looking back through the archive makes me wonder what could this series have become if it had spent more time building background story for Ai and her associates. Well, let me know what you think of the final episode of this series.

Brief summary

Enma Ai escapes Hell in order to avenge her grudge on Hajime and Tsugumi. She does this by trying to convince Tsugumi that her father was responsible for her mother's death and then giving the girl the straw doll. Tsugumi, however, loves Hajime too much to be able to pull the ribbon and instead forgives his mistake. She then tells Ai that despite his mistake, Sentarou did love Ai. Because of this, Ai decided to avenge her grudge by destroying the temple that caused all of the sacrifice instead of killing Hajime and Tsugumi. Ai then returns back to Hell with her associates while Tsugumi and Hajime resume their life together. Jigoku Tsuushin, however, is still in business as usual. I have to say that the part where Tsugumi forgives Hajime was quite heart-wrenching.

is that Ai with the mark on her chest at the end?

No, it's not Ai. It's one of those victim of the week from an episode I've forgotten. Anyway, I should have made it clearer that when I said Ai goes back to hell I meant she resumes her duty as Jigoku Shoujo and that's pretty much it. All of the main characters are alive and happy at the end of the series.

After watching the last episode, I've felt so sorry for Ai. She is such a poor girl. All she could think of is to avenge her grudge. It is true that she committed a very grave crime. Setting the whole village on fire is a very serious crime. But when she committed the crime, she was a small child and so immature. She thought she had been betrayed by the only person she could love and trust. And if she hadn't had the power to control fire as she wished, she wouldn't have set the whole village on fire. She got insane one night and committed one crime. But since then how much she has payed back? She has been doing the job nobody would like to take for 400 years. She has never enjoyed it but still she has done what she was supposed to do. I think she should be forgiven now for what she did such a long time ago. If this anime has the second season( at the end of the episode, I saw a message of "to be contitued" on a keitai screen), I would like the writer to do these.

1.Set Ai free. She has payed back much more than she owed and she should be relieved from the old crime. She should be given another life as an normal person.

2.Make hajime and Ai love each other. And because of the love, she should be relieved from the old grudge and know the happiness of life.

3.Explain who and what the grandmother is.

Apparently there is a second season:

Anyone else want more of the same thing? I sure as hell (ha ha) don't.

If they are doing a second season, they really ought to ditch the 'plot of the week' device; it got old well before Episode 13, unless they manage to make it interesting (like the schoolteacher who didn't really deserve the trip, or the painter who was waiting for Ai to claim his soul at the end of his life). Episodes like Ep 6 (where the Tsuushin crew played 'detective') and maybe Ep 21 (where Ai met Hell Boy) would've done the series a world of good.

I am glad that there will be a second season. I want to see Ai happy but she won't be able to be happy as long as she's a Hell Girl.

You know, I can't help but feel disappointed. This series should have stuck to the individual formual it had going at the beginning because once the main story kicked in, the show started to get quite boring, and by ep 16 (except the Hell Boy episode), I lost most of my interest in it. Of course, I have yet to see the last 4 episodes, so maybe they got better.

Well, the ending dissapointed me. At least I wanted something better that would happen to Ai at last. But remembering all that horrible thing about her life, freaks out and then go back to pulling people down to hell again like usual.. the ending was kinda boring. If there's going to be a second season, I hope they show and tell us more about Ai.

Well
The ending is not what I expected (I was hoping for some info of Jigoku tsushin crew and grandma)

But it seems that the anime had some success, since we will have another season, and I can't help to watch it, even with the revenge-wisher-of-the-week plot repeated over and over. My curiosity for the series is too big...

Actually, I like ep.25 more than this ending ep.26 because ep.25 really had a subtle atmosphere and satisfied my curious about Ai's story. This ending, however was quite predictable by the fect that Ai's may just either unsucess for her avengement or just give it up( I don't really think Hajime or Tsugumi will died for that ).

But what I want to say is that although I quite like Ai especially in the episode about the hell boy before, I felt angry and dislike to her while she was continuously having mind-attack to Tsugumi, and keep saying that she was just going to help Tsugumi but in fact was tend to escape the fate of going to hell after avenge. Her act reminded me the girl in ep.10 who ordered her being-bullied friend to pull the red line for her, to avenge for her. Therefore, quite a while I was wondering if Ai will be send to hell instesd of Hajime, if Tsugumi has pulled out the line.

The most exciting or touching part to me no doubt is the sense when Hajime second saw the accident, said that all was his fault. At that time Ai still purpose Tsugumi to pulled the line. But then I felt a bit strange that Hajime seemed to have said too much words about it. And poor lonely Ai just looking them hugged together.

In the end, Ai continued her job but her feeling seemed to be changed. That's judge from the last shot, when Ai give the hell doll to the unknown girl, her eyes were just halfly opened, make me think that she is sad and not will to do it.

Excuse me for sounding dense, but what was was it that the grandma asked Hajime to do so that he could get out of there? Does it have to do with whatever was supposed to follow "Enma Ai wa..."? And who is the spider? I thought it was the grandma, but it spoke with a male voice...I am quite confused. (Still loved the episode though. I'm glad that Hajime and Tsugumi got a happy ending as I was quite attached to those characters and that Ai felt at least a little better about her past.) I hope they explain some of these things in the second season. I'd also like to see some backstory on Hone onna, Wannyudo and Ren.

I'm sorry I didn't notice your message beforehand, mousey. So this might be a month late. Anyway, you can't actually hear what the Grandma tells to Hajime. IIRC, the scene cuts to another scene before we get to hear what she asks out of Hajime.

This is all loosely based on classic horror stories. But the basis is still to promote "good". Ai is not a normal human girl and perhaps it was her destiny to become Jigoku Shoujo. It is not enjoyable work and she is often sad, but it is her work because she does have the power. Sometimes those born with the power have to make difficult decisions. Grandma Spider is the guardian overlooking all of this.

Ai needed to remember her past and let go of her own grudge. Hating and killing your enemies is easy, forgive and move on is hardest.

I still wish they revealed more about those (3) associates though.

Where are the last 2 screenshots from? The Ayu fansub I watched didn't include those at all, so I'm wondering if they are of any significance or not.

VampireMiyu, Cole, the last two shots are from the last few seconds of episode 26 (after the credits, I think). It's basicaly a teaser for the 2nd season.

Is it just me, or did Ai, along with destroying the temple, kill the guy in it too? I'm sure there was a shot of him getting blown away. If so, why is everyone so calm and happy at the end?

In the end, I think JS did focus too much on "hate of the week" and spent less time developing its story. I feel the show would have been a lot more powerful if it was a tight 13 episodes. As a for second season, I'm all for it, so long as it imoproves upon this one. I liked JS, but I know it could have done better.

May 23, 2006 | Garten wrote:

LOL. That's what I thought too. But I think the explosion actually happens outside of the guy's house. I do admit that when I first saw Ai charging up I thought she's gone mad and wants to kill everyone. XD

Say, what happened to the rest of the summary? :D

I must say, it was interesting to have Enma Ai telling Hajime things that were equally applicable to herself.. and then realizing it. With the Tsugumi/Hajime reconcilliation being the final blow to her righteous feelings regarding the 'get Hajime sent to Hell by Tsugumi, who will end up going there too, wiping out their bloodline' scenario she set up, especially as Grandma Spider stopped the first attempt.

The series woulc have been WAY better if they'd focused more on the horror and less on the revenge-tales.

I expecting that there would be a second season on this anime series, because the story is still untold yet, it doesn't even show on the story how Ai Enma exist in the first place, and how did she became the hlel girl.

On second thought, on the second season I'd be expecting that, Ai Enma would be facing more enemies instead of facing the HELL BOY, she should have face aother person that does have the power the same as her, and to show the story about Ai Enma's grandma, and the spider that has sent to her to work, " who was the spider in that story anyway? I don't get it..."
