Hachikuro Live Action

As mentioned by James in the talkback for episode 18 recap, apparently there will be a Honey and Clover live action adaptation in the form of a movie. The announcement was made on the 24th of this month and apparently principal photography will begin this October. I'll be interested to see this one if this is as well-executed as its anime counterpart. In the meantime, here's the link and rough translation:

http://www.yomiuri.co.jp/hochi/geinou/aug/o20050824_20.htm

"It was announced on the 24th of this month that the popular Young You comic series, Honey and Clover will be made into a movie. Sakurai Shou (23 years old) from popular idol group "Arashi" will star in his first starring role. Honey and Clover is a romantic love story set within an art college. The 8 volume manga itself has reached a total sales of 3,600,000 copies thus far. The series was recently adapted into animation in Fuji TV and has achieved an unprecedented high ratings despite its late night timeslot."

The article also said that the decision to turn Hachikuro into a movie was made after the success of another Young You series, NANA (which has recently been adapted into a film starring Nakashima Mika). It also mentioned how in 2003, the series won the 27th Kodansha Manga Award and that 8 volumes of the manga have been released thus far. The series is apparently popular with both men and women. In fact, it's a hit with a total sale of the manga reaching 3,600,000 copies. The animation, which is currently being run on Fuji TV's Thursday 0:35 timeslot has received an exceptional 4% retention of audience rating. This is quite a feat, considering the fact that it's a late-night TV slot.

As mentioned above, Sakurai Shou has been selected to play Takemoto and this will mark his first starring role. He seems to be enthusiastic about the role, promising that he'll work hard to ensure that his performance will match the original character. As for the rest of the casting, the role of Hagumi has been given to the 20 year old actress, Aoi Yuu who does bear a striking resemblence to the character. Morita will be played by Iseya Yuusuke (29) whose most recent role is that of Azuma Tetsuya aka Casshern in the live action version of Casshern. The role of Mayama has been given to 30 year old Ryo Kase. Last but not least, Yamada will be played by Megumi Seki.

In other related news, Amazon Japan has now come up with full list of tracks which will be included in Honey and Clover OST. If this is correct, then only 2 background songs will be included in this OST as I mentioned before. Amazon Japan also has a scan of the 2nd DVD cover if you're interested to see it. Anyway, here's a romanized version of the OST track listing for those who are interested in purchasing the soundtrack:

It's stupid, i was hoping for a good actress and actor

Ouch, that's kind of harsh. I admit that I have doubts whenever someone tries to make a live-action adaptation of a popular series. Having said that, I personally will wait for the film before judging it since I am not too familiar with those actors.

As much as I look forward to the production of this movie, a part of me feels like the movie format isn't appropriate format to broadcast this live-action. I wonder how the production staff is going to be able to condense 8 volumes of material into a 2 hour movie? There's so much of the story, and yet so little time to cover it all. Some of the scenes are most likely gonna be cut or not covered in depth, which I'm not looking forward to since the anime itself (comparing to the raw manga scans) seems to be very true to the manga. Maybe it would be better for Hachikuro to be a serial drama? But then again, the anime is already a serial drama in itself, it's just that it's animated.

I agree; I'm going to reserve judgement for the film for when it actually comes out. I can't wait to see how they portray morita.

I don't know about the rest, but Casshern had some really really bad acting. I really hope Iseya Yuusuke is better in the Honey and Clover movie...
And yes, 4% for a late night slot is really great. Compared to the usual 0.8~1.2%...

Although I'm a little bit ify on the choice of actors. I'm curious as to how they plan on doing this well enough so as to put enough depth in the story in one short movie. Nevertheless, I can't wait to see it.

I can't really see Hachikuro as a live-action movie. The comedic stunts I don't think can be justified in live action. The length and depth of the manga would be another.

But I'm looking forward to seeing it anyway, just to see how everything turns out.

I love Sho-kun actually...hmm...He would be a better Mayama in my view. I was thinking this live action will probably end up like an 'Orange Days' vibe,...except funnier.

Though I am a bit surprised that they pick a girl that is 160cm tall for the role of Hagu... hm.... Anyway, I hope it will turn out to be something good.

Honey and Clover as a live action film. Hmm, dunno. Part of the reason I love Hachikuro so much is because of the art.

btw, does anyone know where I can find the piano version of Waltz that you hear every now and then during emotional/pensive scenes?

It would be really nice to have a real live performance of "Honey and Clover." I can't wait to see the post of this movie on "memento!"

Well, well, well... The casting doesn't seem that bad so far. Yuu-chan seems to be the perfect cast for Hagu-chan. XD But I have no idea about their acting abilities. Judging from the few Japanese movies and tv series I have seen so far, the acting can't be bad bad. (Even though I don't know those people) ^_^; Anyways I have faith in Japanese actors/actresses! But oh well, whether the live action will turn out to be great or not, not only depends on the performances of the actors but it also depends on how well the director will be able to rewrite the script of Hachikuro, so it can be presented as a movie without losing its charm in general. The BGM and the visual effects are also important, especially in this production. Hachikuro is about an art school after all. ^_^
So, anyways, I hope everyone working on Hachikuro live action do their very best to make the best out of it. So hopefully the result will be a satisfying one for Hachikuro fans (like me!!!!). ^____^

It discourages me to see a young singer playing a very difficult character in a series I love so much. I think the rest of the cast seems *sigh* as good as can be expected. I know I shouldn't be judging this project before it gets off the ground, but, looking at the series, I just can't see how the exaggerated, slap stick humor of the series could be carried out properly in live-action.

On the plus side, the actor for Morita looks pretty close to the original. . .

I don't really dislike their choice of actors and actresses, but I wish they made better discreet choices. However, if they act well and resemble their characters flawlessly, then that's good enough.

Personally I wouldnt want to judge the movie format until it's come out, but I still have preference for the anime

September 29, 2005 | Tank wrote:

I don't know how well these guys can act, so I'll just talk about how they look for now:

The choice for some of the actors/actresses kinda reminded me of the Taiwanese drama version of Hana Yori Dango, AKA Meteor Garden. Tsubaki and Shizuka were HIDEOUS compared to their anime incarnations. In this case, the actor for Morita looks too old and big-boned--he looks like some kind of jaded punk rapper rather than the crazy, childish Morita who uses feminine speech patterns from time to time. I agree that Hagu's actress should be a shrimp. Yamada shouldn't have cat eyes--her eyes are SUPER ROUND! And she looks like those backstabbing, group-ostracizing girls in Japanese drama serials--she's supposed to be as innocent as an elementary school kid, right? Mayama, well, I guess he's supposed to be the most mature-looking of the lot... but I don't think he's supposed to look like some 40 year old! As for Takemoto's choice... Hmmm... He's certainly young enough, but I can't get the pop-idol image out of my head--which give him a worldliness that Takemoto doesn't have.

Now I'm really interested in Rika's choice--despite my personal opinion that she's a beotch--coz she's supposed to be some awe-inspiring beauty. *mutters*

firstly, great effort on your site and comments - this entry particularly was of assistance to me as my copy of the soundtrack arrived from cdjapan today and i was looking for track titles.

it really is a shame we didn't get the piano version of waltz, but hopefully there'll be another soundtrack or an image album that has it on.
