It's a great feeling to realise that even after 17 episodes, this series is still capable of producing stories that are interesting, powerful, and relatable in many ways. I'm also still amazed at the ability of the writers in juggling the comedy and the serious part of the story. Prior to watching this episode, I was actually a bit worried that the anime will cut short Takemoto's storyline in favour of the funnier part of the story. Thankfully that is not the case here. The writers somehow managed to give Takemoto's arc a main priority while carefully utilised the comedic scenes to lighten up the episode. On top of this, the episode comes with a surprise cliffhanger ending which I'm sure will make some viewers happy.
The episode itself begins with Nomiya and Yamazaki from Fujiwara Designs talking about how Miwako lately looked like an old lady after Mayama left the office. Much to their surprise, however, Miwako is still quite sharp and able to give them advice in regards to their professional and private life. Meanwhile, Yamada has finally told the guys from the shopping mall about her true feelings for them. She feels really lousy about having to say it but her friend, Ippei, encourages her to just be herself. At the same time, Takemoto returns from one of his job interviews feeling like a complete failure. He realises that even after going to University for 4 years, he still doesn't know what he wants to do nor where he is heading at the moment. Compelled by his uncertainty, Takemoto decides to destroy the tower he's built for the exhibition.

A couple of weeks later, Yamada and Hagu are seen helping Ippei selling Christmas cake as usual. Yamada at first feels awkward having to work in an area where she has to face some of the guys she has rejected. Much to her surprise, however, everyone is being kind and protective of her. Later on during Christmas night, Takemoto, Shuuji, Yamada, and Hagu celebrate Christmas together. Takemoto, who's already depressed becomes even more so when he remembers how last year was the year when he got to spend Christmas with all of his friends. He, however, manages to forget his sorrow a little bit after Shuuji stuffs him with foods and alcohol. A couple of alcohol later, the group finds themselves playing the dangerous Twister game created by Morita. Everyone seems to be having fun playing the game until Shuuji breaks his leg trying to reach one of the colors.
A few days later, Takemoto and the others find out that their graduation project is due in one month. Takemoto is stressed out about this since he is not close to finishing off his new project. On top of things, he continually fails at his job interviews. The only thing that makes him feel better is the knowledge that at least his mother gets along well with his stepfather's family. In the end, however, the stress takes its toll on Takemoto and he ends up coughing blood then falling unconscious in front of Yamada and Hagu. As Takemoto is hospitalised, the others find out that he's suffered from stomach ulcer. Eventually, Takemoto has no choice but to take it easy and study for one more year. The episode then ends with Takemoto and the others watching Mochademy Awards in Hollywood. They, however, are surprised when the winner of the special effects award is announced.

Impression:
This is another brilliant but quite difficult episode to watch for me. Despite my attempt to see the episode as nothing more than a well-written story, I can't help but feeling sad when I saw the scene where Takemoto remembers the last Christmas he spent with his friends. Everytime I see that scene, I wish that I'm as drunk as Takemoto so that I am not reminded of my own situation. It doesn't help that the rest of the episode continues in this same vein. Just like Takemoto, I'm also at the point where I don't really know where I'm going with my life and my career. All I know is that I don't want to be doing the same job that I'm currently doing for the rest of my life. The problem is, it's not easy to re-orient your path especially after taking a particular one for the last four or five years. I'm so used to working in my current profession that I have no idea what else I can possibly do if I have to switch career.
Anyway, back to the series itself, I'm interested to see how things progress from here on for Takemoto. It seems to me that rebuilding his project does not help him much when it comes to figuring out what he wants to do in life. If anything, the decision only causes harm to his health. I hope that the writers will have the chance to address this storyline before the anime ends. Right now, however, I'm guessing most viewers are more excited about the possible return of Morita. After a couple of serious episodes these past couple of weeks, it'll be nice change to see a funny and happy episode.
Timeline:
The episode begins probably a couple of days after the previous episode. However, halfway through the episode, the storyline jumps to the Christmas season, suggesting that at least a couple of weeks have passed within this episode itself. The episode then concludes possibly a couple of weeks after New Year's Day.
Ippei is Yamada's brother, right? I liked this episode too. The whole series is so good, I'm always dl'ing this and watching it as soon as it comes out :P I knew as soon as those alien-mice showed up that it was Morita's work!!!
Those Hagu-look alike aliens really gives us the idea who made the CG of the film, :)
I thought Ippei was one of the next generation of self-sufficient (read: economically inefficient and liable to going bankrupt) shopkeepers near where Ayu lived. He probably also had membership of the Ayu fanclub, though he takes a more rational train of thought than the more fanatic members of said club (see EP 12).
Great episode! Shouldn't Morita owe Hagu-chan like millions of yen in royalties by now, though?
Ippei I think is the 3rd generation baker in the shopping arcade...
this episode had so many powerful scenes in it. From Takemoto destroying his own tower, to when he topples over from this condition, to (my favourite) where he dreams about his father, and instead wakes up to see Kazu-san holding his hand instead.
A very touching episode.
Ippei is voiced by William's seiyuu!.... William from Emma that is.
Shouldn't Morita owe Hagu-chan like millions of yen in royalties by now, though?
As long as Hagu claims that there is no similarity between her and the mouse, I guess Morita can walk away with the millions of Yen. :)
Everyone wonders where they're going in life. Even me. Especially when you're still in school preparing for the real world. It's just that most people don't realize that there *are* options out there if you look. Reading up on things you like, volunteering, and you could always go back to school (which many do).. You should continue working where you are while you look for those opportunities.
Just think of it this way. It's better to jump into something you think you might like and learn you don't like it later instead of staying in the same situation for years and years. It'll just eat you up.
I think it's the "jumping in" that scares everybody.
Anyways, as always a great summary. I love the way they add the comedic relief.. it just breaks up the underlying drama so it doesn't hold the viewer down. I was pretty surprised to see it get updated so quickly, but again it's sad to see that we're closer to the end of the series.
Wow this episode was really nice. I can totally releate to what Takemoto was saying about being lost, about not knowing the destination. It was really sad because I totally know how he feels. Anyway this is a excellent series.
Ok, the reason they scream at the end is because the movie is Morita's work, or what?
yes chris.
I'm looking forward to ep 18 ^^
I loved the last 2 episodes of Honey & Clover. I can even say that it's going to be placed really high on my most favorite anime list. I'm looking forward to even buying the DVDs and manga. Well, I'll probably by them next time in London. It hit me really hard, seeing Takemoto contemplating about his life, future, career prospects etc. I'm going in my final year in uni and I also don't have this destination that Takemoto lacks. I know I want to achieve lots of things, but I'm not really happy with myself and everyone wants to live a good life. I hope I find something that will make me like my school of choice even more, or at least (in the future) my job. See, Garten, there are a lot of us lacking a certain goal :P Mine was to take post-graduate studies in Japan, even live there, but am really worried that I won't be able to do so, or that I won't even like it there in the end. Oh so much worrying! T_T I'll have to wait for Hachikuro 18 to put a smile on my face! :) Btw, Morita dyed his hair? Hahaha O_<
I totally love this series..it has the right balance of seriousness and comedy relief..and I was totally feeling Takemoto's grief over where his life was headed..I mean who hasn't has moments of self-doubt but the ending was just right..I swear I almost jumped out of seat with anticipation for what's to come and once again I almost choked with laughter when I saw everyone's reaction to the award show announcement. That can only be....... *don't read if you don't wanna know my guess*
Shinobu!!!!!!!!Yipee!!!!!
"Shouldn't Morita owe Hagu-chan like millions of yen in royalties by now, though?"
Legally speaking, Yes but I doubt Hagu has the heart to file a lawsuit against him.
But man, she sure looks like a hamster ^o^
I hope you meant this as a joke but it makes me rather sick. No, you can't sue someone because he used a character in his movie that *remotely resembles* you.
Honey and Clover must be an extraordinary anime. I've heard so many excellent compliments about it! I really hope that there would be many great animes like this one in the future.
yeah im sure morita won the special effects award. and i love the series, explains my love life into terms i couldnt think of.. perfectly.
