Since the 2nd season of Honey and Clover is coming on the 29th of this month, I think it's time to heat up the interest in the series. Before I talk about the DVD, however, I'll mention several news which some of you are probably already aware of. The official site for the 2nd series has announced a while ago that the OP and ED theme for the 2nd season has been decided. Yuki will sing the OP, which is titled 「ふがいないや」(Fugai nai ya), while Suneohair will sing the ED, titled 「スプリット」(Split). Suga Shikao, Depapepe, and Hayashi Yuzo & Salon 68 will provide some background music. If you go to Depapepe's Discography section, you should be able to listen to some examples of their songs, which are pretty good. It's nice to know that at the very least, the producer got the BGM right. The website for the film also announced that there'll be some kind of Hachikuro fair between the 10th of July to the 23rd of July. However, details of the fair has not appeared yet. As a side note, those who asked me for that Hagu paper scan, you can find it in the Volume 6 DVD entry.

Back to this DVD, this time around the slipcover features the Fujiwara Design employees: Nomiya, Miwako, and Yamazaki. There's always a debate between Hachikuro fans whether the "F" in Chapter F actually represents Fashion or Fujiwara. I'd say it is both. Unfortunately, the paper-based extra is only a sticker. The extras inside the DVD include Chapter F, interview with Takahashi Mikako (Yamada Ayumi) and Kamiya Hiroshi (Takemoto Yuuta), a preview image for Chapter F, and image gallery. The image gallery is quite interesting because it features not only the characters but also the kind of clothes that they wear. Hachikuro is one of those rare series where the characters actually change their clothes from time to time. It's interesting to see how some of these clothes look like they were based on actual merchandise. I particularly like Takemoto's light parka because it looks good yet seems very practical for everyday use.
Prior to watching the DVD, I was hoping that the interview will feature Sugita Tomokazu considering the fact that he's currently lending his voice for Kyon in Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu. Unfortunately, he's nowhere to be seen in this installment of the interview. Looking back at Volume 6 interview, however, I notice that the voice that Sugita uses for Kyon is actually a lot closer to his own voice and inflection. On the other hand, he seems to adopt this older-sounding, calmer tone for his role as Mayama Takumi. If you have the time, listen to both roles and tell me what you think. But I've digressed too much so I better start talking about the interview. The funniest part of the interview is when Takahashi Mikako and Kamiya Hiroshi realise that the two of them and Sugita Tomokazu are the only ones who always get to deliver monologues on the show. They find it funny because they believe the monologues makes their characters sound lonely.
I think just like in Suzumiya Haruhi, the monologues in Hachikuro are some of the best I've heard. I still remember the one where Takemoto asking himself if it's harder not being able to do what you want to do or not knowing what you want to do. Anyway, I find it interesting that Kamiya Hiroshi originally also wanted to audition as Mayama but the producers only asked him to audition as Takemoto. On the other hand, Takahashi Mikako knew right from the start that she wanted to voice Yamada. The funny thing was, during audition she was asked to read for Hagu. She laughed about it because she can't imagine herself as Hagu. Just think about it, we would have heard Hagu sounding like Yamada while she was saying "Pump-Mint". I don't think it'll work. Anyway, upon seeing these interviews and rewatching the first season, I realised how much I miss the series. The series really did have some of the best Japanese VA working in it.

Honey and Clover Volume 7 (Limited Release)

What? It's coming out this month? Sweet!
A pity I can't understand a lick of Japanese.. and that the import costs would kill me, else I'd already have all the DVDs by now.
Maybe they'll show up in an anime con nearby... hmmm... :D Still, I can't imagine Yamada's seiyuu there as the 'small-sounding' Hagu. She knew exactly what she wanted, and I can't honestly imagine her playing any of the other roles in the series.
Ahhh, it's always a pleasure to read your Hachikuro posts... and if you're curious, you did ingnite my excitement and anticipation for the second season again with this post.
I like the fact that the majority of VAs in this series have voiced characters which are completely different from their role here. For example, it's nice to see Ueda Yuuji playing the calm Hajime in Jigoku Shoujo and then playing the over the top Nekozawa in Ouran High School Host Club. Here are some of the roles that the VAs have done.:
Takahashi Mikako
Yamada Ayumi (Honey and Clover)
Tokitou Maki (Karin)
Rosalia Claudel (Mai Otome)
Akiba Rika (Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora)
Kudou Haruka
Hanamoto Hagumi (Honey and Clover)
Kaminogi Haruka (Noein)
Ueda Yuuji
Urashima Keitarou (Love Hina)
Morita Shinobu (Honey and Clover)
Shibata Hajime (Jigoku Shoujo)
Adashino-sensei (Mushishi)
Nekozawa Umehito (Ouran High School Host Club)
Sugita Tomokazu
Sumeragi Subaru (X TV)
Motosuwa Hideki (Chobits)
Mayama Takumi (Honey and Clover)
Gintoki Sakata (Gintama)
"Kyon" (Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu)
Kamiya Hiroshi
Kaji Tetsuji (Ultra Maniac)
Takemoto Yuuta (Honey and Clover)
Matou Shinji (Fate/stay night)
Haha, Yamada's VA has the cutest ears... :D
0_0;;; Morita = Keitarou? wow... didn't see that coming.
Now that I think about it, Mayama and Kyon do sound very similiar; I guess I just never made the connection until I comparison listened just now. Loved the 1st season and looking forward to the second as well as more insightful entries. And thanks for the timeline you posted after ep 24; that helped me realize just how long the first season spanned.
That big teddy bear is the mangaka's persona in her end of volume omakes. Umino-sensei!!!! *heart*
I wonder if she's actually inside... that would be absolutely awesome. Shit I really want to watch these now, even if I would have no idea what the interviews are saying.
Oh btw Garten, Sugita Tomokazu voiced Nova in the Bleach anime (the cool and quiet mod-soul). ^^ I'm looking forward to watching the second season. If there's a chance, will you be going to the Hachikuro fair, Garten? It would be nice to have photos of the fair going on. :)
I'm trying to arrange my schedule so that I'll still be in Japan around that time. Although I hope this fair is a lot more interesting than the Hachikuro Cafe.
A Honey & Clover fair? :O Where is it going to be, or is that one of the details that hasn't been released yet?
I simply can't wait for the second season! Unfortunately, it's only with 13 episodes. How sad. I hope someone will subb it as soon as it comes out.
Also, is the 7th DVD out in the US?. I live far away from there, but i'll be going there sometime near, and i wanna buy the DVD's. Help please.
Well, given that the manga's still ongoing and they probably don't have enough material for 24 eps... I guess 13 eps will have to do, if they don't want to write a bunch of original stories out. And if this does well... maybe we'll see Season 3?
Either way, I'm looking forward to this - and I believe you have to import these DVDs, IIRC.
The details of the fair has not emerged yet. And the DVD is not out in the US as far as I know.
I'm hoping for the first season to be licensed so I can understand T_T
If you like the monologues, you should try the films of Wong Kar-wai.
