Maybe I was just expecting too much from the film but I didn't enjoy the live action version of Honey and Clover. First of all though, judging from the audience's interest in the movie, this is clearly a very popular series in Japan. I didn't expect many people to actually come and see the film since apart from Sakurai Sho, the rest of the actors are relative unknowns. However, when my friends and I arrived at the cinema 1 hour prior to the screening, there was already a long queue in front of the theatre. I assume the popularity is due to the manga and anime version of the story. This is why I don't understand why the film writers decided to alter some of the more interesting stories and the characters' background. Unfortunately I can't remember the exact sequence of the story anymore since I watched another film after this. What I wrote below are more or less what I remember from the movie but it may not be the actual sequence.
Ticket, Program Guide, Mini Poster
The film begins with Takemoto, Mayama, and Yamada inside Shuuji's house having party with the other neighbours. Someone wants a beer so Takemoto offers to fetch it from upstairs but he's distracted when he sees a beautiful girl painting inside a room. Mayama, who goes along with Takemoto, tells himself that this is the first time he sees a guy falling in love with a girl. The girl is later on introduced by Shuuji as Hagumi, her niece from Nagano. Hagu, however, is ashamed being noticed by strangers and decides to run away. Takemoto stays in her room and notices her painting which suddenly unleashes burst of cherry blossom petals at him. The next day Takemoto wakes up with a stupid grin on his face and this continues through the day until he meets Hagumi again in a cafe. The two eventually go back to the University because Hagu wants to show Takemoto her art book. When they get there, however, there is someone in the room and that person is Morita who has just come back from one of his trips.
Morita wants to know who draws the paintings and immediately guesses that it's Hagu. When she refuses to tell her name, however, he takes a look at the book's cover and finds out her name. Hagu is not happy about this so she tries to get her artbook back. She eventually manages to do so and runs away from the room. Morita, on the other hand, does not recognise Takemoto so the later has to introduce himself as the guy who stays next door to him. When the two return to their apartment, they realise that Morita's room is now full of spider webs and stinks badly. Because of this Morita asks Takemoto if he can sleep in his room. As a thanks for Takemoto's kindness, Morita decides to give him a hand-carve keychain of a bird. That night Mayama returns to the apartment and recognises Morita but he refuses to join dinner and instead hides himself in his room. He imagines himself being interrogated by the police for stalking Rika.
In his wall, various items belonging to Rika are placed inside a zip lock and plastered all over it. The next day, Yamada comes over to see Mayama and is happy when he invites her to have breakfast with her. Much to Yamada's disappointment, however, Mayama cancels the plan when he receives a phone call about a 'part-time job'. Yamada decides to follow Mayama and finds out that Mayama actually is stalking Rika. At one point, in order to avoid Rika from seeing him, Mayama hides behind a telephone pole and sees Yamada not far from him. Yamada, who doesn't want Mayama to think that she's been following him pretends that this is just a coincidence. Mayama is not sure about this but by speaking to Yamada, he reveals his location to Rika. Rika wants to know what he's doing behind the pole so Mayama also tells her that this is just a coincidence. The three then sit together inside a cafe and Yamada realises that Rika is the woman that Mayama loves.
Meanwhile, Morita pays a visit to Shuuji and gives him the same 'souvenir' that he gave to Takemoto. Shuuji eventually gives the souvenir to Hagu because she likes it so much. When Hagu notices Morita sculpting a statue similar to the souvenir, she realises that he's the one who made the souvenir. The two eventually become obsessed with watching each other creating their own artwork (Hagu with her painting and Morita with his sculpture) and at one point, the two even create a painting together. At the same time, Mayama comes over to Yamada's pottery class with the intention of telling her something. Yamada tries to run away from Mayama but he eventually manages to catch up with her. He then asks her why it's him that she likes. He thinks she should be looking for other men because he'll never change. Later on, however, Mayama himself also got rejected by Rika, who tells him that he'll be better off working for other people.
One day all 5 come to an art gallery run by Mario and Luigi because Morita's artwork is being offer on sale. Takemoto becomes upset when he sees the closeness between Morita and Hagu. On the other hand, Mayama is upset when Mario and Luigi insinuate that there is something between Rika and Shuuji, who has arrived together at the gallery. Morita who had a fight with someone decides to take his 4 friends to the beach using Mayama's car. But that night the car breaks down so they can't go home in it. Because of this, they decide to stay overnight at a local ryoukan. While Yamada talks to Morita whether or not she should give up her feelings for Mayama, Takemoto tells Mayama that he finally realises that he's the only one who's falling in love (with Hagu). Takemoto tries to confess to Hagu but before he can do this, Morita makes a noise and starts ripping the painting inside the room. In exchange, he draws a picture of a dragon using soy sauce.
The next morning, Takemoto wakes up and finds out that Hagu and Morita are not in their futon any longer. He decides to spy on the two of them talking on the beach and becomes upset when he sees Morita kissing Hagu. Hagu, who is shocked by the kiss, runs away from Morita and fails to notice Takemoto who's hiding behind the car. That day, Mayama manages to fix the car so all 5 finally return home. A few days later, Mayama decides to ask Rika for a chance to work at Harada's design again. Yamada, who tags along with him realises that Mayama has not given up his feeling for Rika. Meanwhile, Hagu loses her confidence in her art after the kiss and faces a tough tie because of this. Takemoto, who feels that he can't help her, ends up running away using his bike. He ends up sleeping on a temple and notices a construction guy trying to restore parts of the temple. He, however, doesn't want Takemoto to hang around him. At the same time, Yamada is drunk after a party at Shuuji's house so Mayama decides to take her home.
Mayama apologises to Yamada for not being able to give up on Rika. Yamada starts crying and tells Mayama that she loves him so Mayama thanks her. Takemoto eventually arrives at the beach that he visited with his friends earlier in the story. He realises that he misses everyone back home and decides to go back home. On his way back, however, encounters the temple reconstruction guy again. This time, however, he's impressed by Takemoto's spirit in carrying his bike while walking up the hill and decides to give him a water and the name of their company. Takemoto comes to Hanamoto's household and goes over to Hagu's room. He finally has the courage to tell Hagu that he likes her. Hagu thanks Takemoto for the confession and smiles for him. In the epilogue, Takemoto is already working for the temple construction people and in the middle of reading a letter from Yamada which tells him about the status of his friends now (ie. Morita is in the US).
Impression:
The biggest problem I have with the film is the different personality and backgrounds of the characters. The reason I love the series to begin with is because the characters have personalities that I can either identify or sympathise with. Now, if you know this and realise that this is one of the major draw for the series, why would you alter it? The biggest character I have problem with is Takemoto, who is played by Sakurai Sho. In the anime, Takemoto is a quiet and relatively serious character. This, however, changed in the live action version. I'm not sure if it's the direction or if it's Sakurai Sho's decision to portray the character this way but Takemoto in the film always has this stupid grin on his face and generally behaves in an over-eager manner. The whole time I feel that it's not Takemoto that I see on screen but Sakurai Sho. I feel that the character would have been better had it been portrayed by an innocent-looking actor like Eita (Sapuri).
Takemoto is also not jobless in this version. He works part time as Nyanzaburou for the Hamadayama shopping street. I don't think this works as well as when Romaiya senpai or Morita wears the suit. The relationship that Takemoto has with other characters also changed here. In this version, Takemoto and Morita are not best friends like in the anime. When the film starts, Morita has just returned from his usual inexplicable trip and does not know Takemoto well or even remember that Takemoto actually lives in a room next to him. However, they get to know each other when Morita asks Takemoto if he can sleep in his room since his own room stinks and full of spider webs. On the other hand, Takemoto and Yamada are like close friends in this version, which baffles me because while the two often talk in the anime, they're definitely not close friends like in the movie. Takemoto even receives a letter from Yamada during the epilogue of the film.
The worst change in Takemoto's story, however, is the part where he goes on a 'self-discovery journey'. In this version, it doesn't involve a trip to Hokkaido but a cycle to a beach that Takemoto visited earlier with the group. The beach is quite far from his apartment but it's definitely not like a trip to Hokkaido. I thought that was kind of lame and I got the impression that his friends did not even notice his disappearance until late in the film. In addition to this, he goes on the journey mostly because he's upset about Hagu and Morita's relationship, which is a rather weak excuse in comparison to the anime version, where his reason was his own uncertainty. During the trip Takemoto meets temple construction guy who's supposed to be like Shin-san in the anime but in this version, the guy isn't as nice as Shin-san at first. In the end, however, Takemoto is seen already working together with the temple construction group.
Moving on to other characters, personality-wise I think Morita is generally quite similar to the anime version. He's a lot more restrained in this version but he's still the same crazy character from the anime. His background, however, is different. In the film, he works for Mario and Luigi, who own an art gallery. He likes to make this ugly squirrel/bird-like keychain which he ends up giving to both Takemoto and Shuuji. And like I said earlier, he didn't know Takemoto right away. His relationship with Yamada also does not have the same closeness that make the two so interesting and complex in the manga/anime version. Iseya Yuusuke, on the other hand, is well casted in the role and his chemistry with Aoi Yuu (who plays Hagu) is quite good although he does look like an older guy chasing after a younger girl. I realise that he's probably not the one who makes the dragon soy sauce painting in the movie. However, he fakes it so well during the movie.
Mayama is basically similar to his anime counterpart. Well, he's a bit more extreme and creepy in this version but that simply proves that in the real world, someone like Mayama is scary. I thought reading Rika's email in the anime was bad enough but in the film, he actually collects objects that Rika either owns or has used (perfume bottle, straw, etc), puts it in zip lock plastic bag, and use them to decorate his room. I can't remember if this is just in his imagination or if it's the reality. But if it's the later then it is beyond creepy especially when you add in the fact that he also stalks Rika from time to time. He also routinely imagines that he's being interrogated by the police for being a stalker. This will be fine and an indication of his guilty conscience if it wasn't for the suggestion that he kind of enjoys this imagination. Overall, he reminds me of the creepy stalker from that anime film, Perfect Blue.
Yamada and Hagu are the two best characters in the film. Their mannerism and personality are generally similar to the anime version. In Yamada's case, Megumi Seki actually went out of her way to imitate Yamada's voice from the anime. Having said that, her confession to Mayama in the film doesn't carry the same weight as the anime version. The director fails to make the scene as romantic and wistful as the anime version and one can't help but wonder what Yamada sees in that creepy Mayama. Hagu is actually a lot more interesting than in the anime. She's a lot more like a real person and her interactions with Morita are the highlights of the film. If one simply watches this film, you'll get the impression that Morita and Hagu are the definite pairing in the series. The film is full of scenes which suggest that the two like each other a lot. On top of this, in this version Hagu didn't notice right away that Takemoto has disappeared from his apartment.
Overall, I think the film is not as interesting as the anime. Many scenes which felt powerful in the anime such as Takemoto's confession to Hagu end up being unimpressive in the film. This can be attributed to either the weak performance of the actor or the lack of good direction. Another element that bothers me is the setting. I think the set designer tried too hard to give the entire film an arty feel. In the end, however, it feels as if these people live on a film set instead of a real place. By now you probably wonder what is left to see from the film? Well, I'll say the entire Hagu/Morita scenes are not bad. I also like the bits of comedy which appear from time to time. The ending theme, Aozora Pedal is quite good so make sure you don't leave until the scrolling credit ends. And it's possible that my judgment is clouded by the fact that I watched Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo after this film and feel that it gives me a much better value for money.
-_-;;; sigh... Mayam=stalker in this version? (and he puts Rika's belonging in the ziplock?... I mean...is he a psycho?) thats just sad. I can't belive they changed the personalities of all characters. I have to say... anime to live action conversion isn't a good idea most of the times. It is just too much to cram into 2 hr interval. I guess I wont be watching the live action movie.
Unfortunately, I can't remember if that was just in his imagination or if his real room looks like that. But I did saw his room filled with ziplocks containing items belonging to Rika (there are even dates on them). And Mayama is a stalker. ^_^ I think they make fun of that fact in this film by showing him literally tailing Rika. But then again Yamada also did the same thing (even taking picture of Mayama while he's sleeping).
Anyway, I think if you like the series, you must at least watch the film once and form your own opinion. Who knows, maybe I just don't like the fact that Sakurai Sho gets to play Takemoto and that ruins the entire movie for me (sorry, Arashi fans! But I really dislike his acting).
Actually there's an episode, that Miwako is talking with someone inside Fujiwara Design office, that clearly tells Mayama collects Rika's belongings, but im not sure the scene is given the importance it really has, since it shows this side of Mayama while joking at him.
Mayama IS a stalker in the anime, too... ^^;; As seen from one of the recent episodes, he even browses Rika's Internet history which is a rather serious breach of privacy and borders on downright disturbing.
Anyway, I'm glad I haven't expected much from the movie. I expected that many things would be changed (to fit the most they can into the movie without having to explain stuff), I expected Sakurai to be a bad actor, etc... so I don't think I'll be disappointed when I watch it. :D
One thing I'm curious about: how was the BGMs? Kanno Youko wrote the soundtrack, and I'm curious if it's one of her better works or not.
Ouch, maybe dated ziplock bags are a bit too creepy for Mayama... I was thinking if Tsumabuki Satoshi from Orange Days would be a better choice than Sakurai Sho, given also his innocent look? Though I have always thought that the whole chosen cast looks frighteningly similiar to their anime counterparts, especially for Hagu. Anyways, as a die-hard hachikuro fan, I'm still very much looking forward to see the movie whether good or bad.
it's a shame it sounds like a disappointment compared to the anime...and i was so looking forward to it too!

Garten, I remember you commenting before about what you use to get screencaps of eps, but I can't find which entry it was on! What program do you use? Is it one that I can google and download? Thank you in advance!
After watching some of the trailers it did feel a little bit off, but otherwise very good... but then you realize they're only trailers. I can only wait and hope it's amazing or maybe you just feel a bit off after eating some bad candy. ha ha. Thanks for the heads up, though.
One thing I'm curious about: how was the BGMs? Kanno Youko wrote the soundtrack, and I'm curious if it's one of her better works or not.
They are generally good BGMs. But there is this one angsty and annoying ballad track which the film keeps playing over and over again.
I was thinking if Tsumabuki Satoshi from Orange Days would be a better choice than Sakurai Sho, given also his innocent look?
Tsumabuki Satoshi would have been good actor to have but I suspect the producers wanted to get a pop singer group and an actor for the price of one. And hiring Tsumabuki Satoshi or other actor in Takemoto's role would have been expensive.
what you use to get screencaps of eps
Try windows media player classic or VLC.
Yeah, please, I wanna know where to get this movie too, I've seen the forst season, and, the first 3 from the second one, but getting the 4th, and now the movie seems to be really hard work surfing for hours, and worst, it is as I can't speak japanese good, I'm still a begginer. So, help for this task, right? Thanks in andvanced too!!! XD
>The worst change in Takemoto's story, however, is the part where he goes on a 'self-discovery journey'.
>Many scenes which felt powerful in the anime such as Takemoto's confession to Hagu end up being unimpressive in the film.
Both are my favourite parts in anime and they decided to change them the movie. Really really 最低!!! Those are among the best parts in the anime.
>it is as I can't speak japanese good, I'm still a begginer.
You don't seem to speak English "well", either >.> Please don't ask people for directions on how to download copyrighted materials...

Judging by your summary, it really seems the screenwriter bastardized the original material, reducing characters' personalities to two-dimensional cutouts... which saddens me...
I'm a bit surprised by your comment...I read a very enthousiastic one on the Hachikuro LJ commnunity....
I guess it depends on what you expect from an adaptation movie ^^ For me, I didn't expect to see the copy of the manga/anim but a way to capture the essence of the manga and a teaser for those who haven't red it...
i definitely wanna watch it for the morita/hagu scene (^^)//
i didn't like the chara's first but looking at the characters more~ i think the person playing hagu is really cute ^^
I'm absolutely terrified by Mayama movie version. He has not reached that level of stalker in the anime (I think this, at least). It's not that he's my favourite, but he's even creepier in the movie.
Having said that, I don't like the reason why Takemoto decides to go to a journey in the movie. It's so lameeee... (I'm going to hate Sho Sakurai if he portrays the character that badly...).
But, well, you can't expect 26 episodes to be faithfully adapted in a 2 hour film. Either way, I hope they release the DVD soon to make my own opinion, but it's going to take long...
P.S: Sorry for my english, U_U.
Basically "from 2D painting to live action" products are regarded as ominous for Japanese otaku.
Hollywood can do it very well such as Spiderman etc. But Japanese live action industry is very clumsy.
(I won't comment much since I'd just be repeating what you said because I agree with all of your comments on the changes made and what was positive in the film)
Takemoto has a job and only goes to the beach -- Being jobless (and then only having a job for a whole evening lol) and his journey were two important events that really added to his growth as a character - When he came back he was able to tell Hagu with NO reluctance that he likes her - it was such a strong great scene.
And wow They really made Mayama quite a stalker.
(There were no personal scenes between him and Rika?) And not much with Shuuji either? Also Nomiya and the others? No struggling in school?
Will you be reviewing Tokikake?
I guess there's a reason why anime/manga have more fans than Live Action movies.
Thanks for the detailed presentation, I was rather reluctant to see it, but thought about missing out on something big. I don't want to see changed Takemoto,Yamada, Mayama :( I like them, PRECISELY the way they are!
I'm back home and didn't have time to check if the movie did play a day before the official release. It was too hectic on the last couple of days before I left.
I agree that fans should see the movie at least once and having read some of your review I'll probably go in it with lower expectations.
I will so kill the director of the film. How the **** can he make Mayama a stalker?! I'll never watch the movie, never! Mayama is my all time favorite character. He should end up with Yamada, though.
Now, i'm mad!
>>Ai-Tan: in the manga AND anime, Mayama is a stalker too....!! He follows Rika at her apartement, watch her, spies her e-mails and so on...
Plus Morita and Miwako-chan makes fun of him about that!!
So I don't think it's strange that the director emphasis this aspect of his personnality....
OMG ! The worst happened ! I'd expected the movie would be quite good like Death Notes .
Well, "mippa" on LJ wrote a very enthousiastic article about the movie. She loved it! (you can read her article on the LiveJournal)
So I guess, you have to make your own opinion when you'll be able to see it...^^
As she says, many situations that are hilarious in the manga can't be put in a live action movie 'cauz it isn't "realistic"...so according to her, the team movie worked it out well...
wait and see...^^
(There were no personal scenes between him and Rika?) And not much with Shuuji either?
There was one Mayama/Rika scene but other than that, Yamada is in the scene as well.
Shuji is in the film the whole time but he rarely talks or given an important scene.
Also Nomiya and the others? No struggling in school?
No Nomiya/Miwako/Yamazaki. No struggling in school. There was someone who's supposed to be like Shin-san but he's rather different from the kind Shin-san. It's like they merge Shin-san's character with that bratty kid character from the same arc. I thought that was a waste considering they hired Shidou Nakamura (Ima, Ai ni Yukimasu) to play the role.
Will you be reviewing Tokikake?
Done. :)
Thank you for the review. It's interesting to read something from the Hachikuro-fan point-of-view than from an Arashi/Sho-fan (i'm an arashi fan btw).
I guess it still proves that bringing a book/manga to the live action screen is hard to swallow especially with the different interpretations of the director and screenwriter. Expectations always fall short.
Personally, I agree that Sho is a little weak in the acting and from what you described, I'm reminded of one of his dramas that still make me cringe whenever I think of it. Unfortunately, I don't follow Hachikuro as anime nor manga so if I do watch this movie, I'll be squeeling at the screen for Takemoto.
And I'm glad that the song "Aozora Pedal" is a good ending theme. I can't wait for the single and PV to be released soon.
I too saw HachiKuro on opening night, but unlike you, I had an overall good impression of the film--not because it was like the anime, but it served its purpose well--draws you in so that you feel a stronger desire to read the manga or watch the anime.
I agree with most of your points made, but before I became too quick to judge the film, I had to remind myself that this is a movie, not a television series. I imagine the same problems would have occurred had HachiKuro been made into an 8-episode OVA series or something similar. We are very fortunate that HachiKuro has gotten such a wonderful treatment, don't you think?
--and a side note--Morita's actor has a master's in art...so I think it would be safe to assume that he *did* in fact do the painting we saw in the movie.
...again, different opinions, but your summary and overall review of the movie was very interesting to read, and you made several excellent points. While you disliked Takemoto's change, I personally enjoyed it.
I do agree about Morita and Yamada's relationship not being as close, but again, I think that was due to time constraints. Their relationship is my favorite in the series, and I would have liked to have seen a bit more done there--not to mention the entire Mayama-Rika situation.
In addition, Shuu's high-caliber actor was such a waste. T.T He barely had any screen time.
Thanks for the review! How long do you think the the R2 DVD release will take? I wish I could just up and see the movie, but alas, the Pacific stands in the way...
It's really a shame that they changed Takemoto. The part I loved most about Honey & Clover was that I was able to identify or sympahthize with all the major characters at one point or another, and I think that anyone who has ever been in love might feel the same. I wonder why they swapped between Morita and Takemoto the closeness with Ayumi... I think it would be more interseting if Morita could play off Ayu while still going after Hagu.
AND THE RIDE! I guess it'd be a stretch to fit a two-month soul-searching sabbatical into a movie already with way too much with to pack in, but those episodes were definitely my favorite, especially the last episode of the series.
Hmm, though I haven't seen the movie myself, I'd wager that the arty cinematography of the movie was a move to match the anime's stylistic artwork.
Still want to see it really badly!
I read your summary, and I'm kind of dissapointed, since it seems like they didnt even try to put in nomiya, nevertheless the nomiya/yamada pairing. That one was what i was looking forward to the most!!
If you'd look at the series, Yuuta was kind of calmer than that when it came to his reaction on Morita and Hagu. And they forgot the part in where they were supposed to show the 'searching for the four leaf clover' scene.
and personally, i'd prefer it if they made the characters more like those in the anime, and to put in that bittersweet feeling you get whenever something sad (or cute^^)happens
just watched the live action movie.
i think overall... it was an ok movie in itself. but in comparison to the anime (i haven't read the manga) it was disappointing. i agree with garten that the actors of hagu and yamada did an excellent job but... i would have liked more of the antics of morita. it seemed the hachikuro anime was more upbeat... altho it did have its serious moments, it wasn't weird (like mayama collecting rika-san's stuff and stalking her or yamada stalking mayama). i know Garten loves takemoto and thought sakurai sho misinterpreted him, but i thought he was ok just bit happier (more like a boy having his hatsukoi - first love). but i really was disappointed that morita was not portrayed by a bishie! sigh...
Yap.here are my opinions about the (Honey &
Clover Live Action)
1.Well it is quite big different from the anime.
2.Not very entertaining (in some scenes)
3.The actors (like Takemoto,Morita and Mayama) don`t come alive as well as in the
anime.
4.Rika-san is not handicaped?
5.Lacking hilarious scenes.
6.Well it has good synopsis.(Almost 60% taken from anime).
7.Good exagoration made
8.Some changes have been made to make
the story more interesting like (Morita,Takemoto,Yamada,Mayama and Hagumi) go to the beach. That scene is
excluded from anime.I like that advantage.
9.OK all characters are not very `wild`.
Ok my rating for The movie is 3/5
anime in other hand 5/5
bah, just saw the movie too =_=
the interesting parts... hmmm kinda hard to explain but
-it was quite interesting to see a live version of hagu, if she was portrayed kinda like that the anime would be a lot better(like not 3/4 of ayu's size), besides her voice sounded quite similar =p
-ayu actress was the best among them i think though at some parts i really miss the anime vibe +_+
-WHERE are those guys that work at fujiwara design? =~~~~
no leader? *sob*
-overall i really missed the anime ost and the funny vibe from the characters that the movie version didn't show much =(
i really don't know. it feels h&c anime is about takemoto, but well... there's no long trip, no clovers, no ... not much =(
h&c movie should have been done the same way harry potter is being done. you cant simply put all that stuff into 2 hours =(
(well, instead of movie maybe a live action series?)
and now... i'm trying to get myself a tayou no uta movie @_@, i hope its something better =T
Luv the movie....just fall in luv...veri infectious. Thou...never know about the anime thing but it's a beaituful coming of age movie.......Morita..Hagu.....and the rest r' colourful. Actually by accident that i watch it coz usuall korean movie r' quite popular. I only know the actor from Cashern......bad acting there but here it's like.....wow! Congrat to the director. Luv the movie
I like the anime so much especially Hagumi. She is very cute and cuddly too.I also like Morita, who likes money and Hagumi.............................i feel like i m inluv with this anime.....i hope someone call da doctor.....pea's
