Okay, so in essence, the basic story of this episode has not changed much. But I hate how once again the anime decides to exclude some of the manga's darker elements. Admittedly, some of the darker stories are still here but by replacing some of them, the end result is not as strong as it could have been. In the manga, one can really feels that there's something inherently wrong with the whole situation and yet, there's nothing Mikan can do about it. That kind of helpless feeling is sorely lacking from this version. I'm happy that the anime does a very good job in showing the comedic side of the series, such as the idiotic divination dance. But I really wish this version had included more foreboding and darker elements. Even Jinno-Sensei looks more silly than threatening in this episode.
The episode begins with Mikan asking Narumi-Sensei to deliver a letter to her grandfather. Unfortunately, her letter-writing effort seems to be a one-sided activity because Mikan never receives any reply from her grandfather. Thanks to a classmate with divination Alice plus Hotaru's help, she eventually finds out that her grandfather is not well-informed about her despite her countless mails. Upon finding out about this, Natsume tells her that this is the price she pays for getting into the school. He also adds that maybe she should wonder if her letters actually ever reached her grandfather. So Hotaru gets an idea to test Narumi-Sensei's honesty by having Mikan giving another letter to the teacher. This letter, however, contains special stickers that can provide visual and sound to Hotaru's Spy TV gadget. Thanks to the gadget, the kids find out how 'cancellation' Alice has become something taboo due to a past event.

Mikan, however, is more shocked when a female teacher says that she feels sorry for Mikan because Mikan doesn't know that her letters are now kept inside a desk's drawer. So Mikan immediately marches right into the teacher's office, much to Narumi and the female teacher's surprise. she then opens Narumi-Sensei's drawer and realises that Narumi really has been hiding her letter inside the drawer. Obviously Mikan's angry by this latest discovery and ends up calling Narumi a liar. She also demands that she'll be allowed to see her grandfather. Unfortunately, Jinno-Sensei then comes in and angrily tells her that she's tresspassed the teacher's room. As a punishment, Mikan is confined in her room without any meal. So Hotaru and Iincho ask Ruka to help them smuggle some food for Mikan. Ruka does this by setting a mouse loose so that the robot that's guarding Mikan runs away to chase that said mouse.
When Ruka finally manages to see Mikan, Mikan asks him to help her to see her grandfather. Ruka agrees to help her by sending her flying using his eagle. Unfortunately for Ruka, this means he has to wear Mikan's skirt so Mikan can use his presumably more flexible pants. Before Mikan leaves, Ruka gives Mikan a parachute and skin cream from Hotaru since the school gate that she's about to cross is protected with electricity. So much for the preparation though, because Mikan still get electrocuted anyway. She also can't stay relax for a long time because Hotaru warns her that someone from school will be alerted immediately once someone crosses the gate. True enough, Narumi finds out from Mikan's homeroom teacher that Mikan has run away. Meanwhile, Mikan tries to find a way to go to the station but she's spotted by a bunch of guys who want to kidnap her once they found out that she's a student from the school.

Mikan tries to run away without much success but thankfully Narumi-Sensei arrives in time to foil the kidnappers. Narumi's attempt, however, ends up injuring him a little bit when the kidnappers shoot him with a gun. Mikan feels guilty because Narumi got hurt because of her so she agrees to return to the school. Once they're safe, Narumi-Sensei asks for Mikan's forgiveness because he can't tell her yet why he didn't send Mikan's letter to her grandfather nor why she can't see her grandpa. Mikan is sad but tries her best to bear it for now. Later on, Narumi is seen in reading in his bedroom while near his bedside, there's a framed picture of him with a woman. Mikan then appears and asks if she can sleep next to him and calls him 'grandpa'. Narumi agrees with the first request but prefers that Mikan calls him 'father' instead since he's too young to be a grandpa. The episode ends with Mikan feeling a bit happy despite what happened that day.
Impression:
Bah. I really am disappointed with this one. Once again, the anime decides to change the darker part of the story and substitute it with lighter elements. Why the hell do they need to change the part where Mikan's grandfather coming to the school, begging to be allowed to see his granddaughter? That was one of the best and most harrowing part of the story. I don't remember seeing an investigation report inside Narumi-Sensei's drawer either in this version. Isn't that an important plot point for the series? *spoiler for the rest of this paragraph* In the manga, the report reveals that Mikan's adopted so this information relates heavily to the latest development in last week's Hana to Yume magazine (chapter 40). Anyway, my knowledge of the entire series is quite spotty because I've only read vol.1-4 plus some HtY chapters. But when I saw that photograph on Narumi's bedside, I can't help but wonder if he's related to Mikan somehow.
I agree. I really wish they had Mikan's grandpa come to the school demanding to see her, etc, etc. But other than that, they kept to the manga pretty well... next part marked in SPOILERS

The frame has me thinking a lot too recently. I've been reading the Japanese raws for the manga and have read up to vol 5 (still need vol6 :( ). In the manga in vol4, or 5, I don't remember. It's when Noda-chi returns from his Time Trip after Mikan messed up when training her Alice with him lol. He said he had the limiter/control items this time, and that we went back to *that* time with *that person* (the girl in the frame) and talks to Narumi about it. He says that *that person* was running on a snowy day with a child in her hands, and the childs name she was speaking out was Mikan... :( Makes me wonder if Narumi x THAT PERSON gave birth to Mikan. They foreshadow it so much now. I wonder if that's really the case... :o...

While I suspected that the woman is most likely MIkan's mother (although it means she had to be really young when she had Mikan), I had no idea nor suspicion that Narumi could be her father until I saw that frame in the anime. So it was surprising to see it there.

That particular scene makes me wonder if the anime and the manga will actually conclude at the same time and point in the story. It's tempting to hope that it'll be that way for the sake of the anime. But at the same time, I don't want the manga to end just yet. I think they still have many possibilities to explore.

I've also read the chapter about "That person" and I think that she is definitely Mikans mother, she was also mentioned in the chapter when Natsume was kidnapped. They said something about mikans alice was like "hers" and that she might look a bit like her, if I didn't read wrong.
And Narumi....I think he could be either mikans father or maybe her uncle.
Remember the qute ending in one of the vols, where Mikan asks if she could call Narumi ...grandpa. Narumi gets a bit offended, (he is still in his twenties) but asks her if "father" is okay?

I've also started reading vol6. I've flipped through the thing and #¤%¤# Natsume 15 years old! He looks good, There are pics of some of the other charas too, really fun to see them all grown up. (Narumi sensei is younger, but not part of the story)
Btw. where can I download ep 8, I've searched tokyo toshokan, project MAO, hongfire and saiyaman, but no luck.
After reading all of your comments I can't wait to watch this episode. Too bad I can't understand Japanese at all.
Does anyone know how many episodes this anime has?
I thought Garten mentioned 26 in one of his previous entries............I'm not sure
This is for everyone who's planning to see the raw:
For the last two episodes of Gakuen Alice, Tokyo Toshokan has been using the Kanji version of the show's title to name its Gakuen Alice torrents. So you need to use their search engine and type this word (or copy and paste if you can't write the kanji/kana):
学園アリス
So don't go there, use the search and type in 'Gakuen Alice'. You're not going to get anything. But type in '学園アリス' and you'll find the torrent. This means Tokyo Toshokan has it. I searched for it myself and the torrent is still there.
Tensai - I remember reading the number of episodes from a magazine or a site. Judging by how the episodes have been screened thus far, I think it's unlikely that they're going to end this as either 12 or 13 episodes. The anime has been paced rather well with 1 volume of the manga turned into 4 episodes of the anime.
If they plan to end this in episode 12 or 13, they would have hurried the pace a little bit because at this rate, there's no way they can end it as 12/13 episode series. The part which will become episode 12 and 13 do not look like season ending material. So I'm tempted to believe that this will be 26 episode series or at least 24 episode series.
Thanks for the info! :-)
Thank you for the tokyotoshokan tip, I'll try to copy and paste.
I just read the rewiew, so this is the grandpa/father episode! I'm so happy! I loved that part in the manga, I hope it turns out just as qute :)
Can't wait to see the episode.
Wait -- excuse my complete ignorance since I desperately want to read the manga but haven't been able to -- how the heck does

Spoilers
for
vol 6.
I haven't read more than a few pages of vol 6 the first few and the last few.
But they are able to become older thanks to some candy Hotaru made, it can make a person become younger or older. Only Natsume, Mikan and Luka turn 15 in the story, they have to sneak in to (sorry I don't know what the english word, it is one level down from high school ? .....I think) either chuutobu or koutobu, I don't remember. They have to find a guy who can tell them how they can sneak out of the school. I don't know much more, since I haven't read the whole thing, but I think this vol is about the person that is taking other peoples alice, and/or Narumi.
I personally thought this episode was not bad. I was afraid they might cut out the Mikan sleeping with Narumi scene, because it seemed a bit o_0 in the manga, albeit sweet. Fortunately it animated out to be more touching than promoting paedophilia. ^^;
*spoilers*
Yeah it's the koutoubu, which I believe is for 15-18 yr olds. http://umechan.livejournal.com has a summary of the volume in one of her entries, for those interested.
Anyway, I've been reading the recent HtY chapters of GA as well, and I am very confused actually. I did think that Narumi-sensei might be Mikan's father, but didn't the sensei the Z girl (I can't remember if they mention her name) reportedly commit suicide? Furthermore, how could he have been her sensei since he couldn't have been much older than her at the time of her flashback? And isn't the sensei's alice also Mikan's mukouka alice? I think I'm asking too many questions. ^^; The only thing I'm pretty sure of is that Mikan is the Z girl and her 'sensei''s child.
*spoilers*

The plot is getting very interesting...I wonder why there is a person (one floor under the high school) who knows how to get out of the school. I wish I have volume 6 or the latest Hana to Yume magazine in my hands...Unfortunately...I wasted my money buying the wrong manga magazine...now i am stuck with this 別冊花とゆめ 1/26/05 edition from Asahiya in New York ;( anyone knows where to buy volume 6 without paying import fees since I couldn't find it in my local japanese bookstore? or I am willing to trade my 別冊花とゆめ for the latest Hana to Yume.
Emm, I was wondering if anyone got any other links for bit download of Gakuen Alice? I tried S0nic but it only has 8 . I need 4 and one. thankz
You can get episodes 1-4 from Mirc. It is pretty fast too. It is Naisho fansubs. It is #naisho-fansubs@irc.enterthegame.com. You can go to anidb.net and put in Gakuen Alice and you can see when a new episode comes out. It also has links to the mirc channel to get the stuff from and the fansub groups websites.
I_love_alice- THANK YOU
I thought I was going to go insane waiting for new episodes.. this has become my favorite show for right now....I have watched the current 8 4 times in the past 3 days. Yeah, I have a lot of free time.. or procrastination time at least. But getting the raws.. I can justify it as Japanese practice before the new semester starts... if I stretch it... a lot. But thank you thank you thank you...
*Spoiler*:
In the later chapters does the creator ever explain what happened to Natsume and the little girl(probably his younger sister) and that fire that supposedly happened? Also does anybody know where to get raw vol. 6?
*SPOILER*
I read online that in actual fact, Natsume didn't set his whole village on fire though I think he was threatened to, by Persona. And the person that set it on fire was his younger sister, but Natsume took the rap for her. I don't know how true that is, but it definately solves some of our doubts, haha.
The lady in the photograph is most probably Mikan's mother. I've read the manga till from where I stopped, it seems that she is Mikan's mother and she possess the Alice of stealing other people's Alice. (She appears in the later volumes of the manga, and she steals Yuu-chan's illusion Alice, but returns it to him eventually.)
Mikan's dad also appears, if my guess is correct. Mikan's mom and this unknown guy (I think its her dad) thank Narumi for taking care of Mikan. And from the manga, what I intepret is that there used to be this teacher in Alice Academy who had the Alice of Nullification also, like Mikan. So I'm wondering if that was her father or something, seeing that the manga said Mikan's mom got together with her "sensei".
I hope that helped!
SPOILER:
SPOILER:
Mikan's dad is NARUMI and her mom is Z. she has the ability to steal alices.
Later on, Mikan meets her mom but she doesnt know who she is and she starts yelling at Z how she hurt Hotaru. Then the mom gives the medicine and goes back. after, Z goes to the academy and talks how there child had to have an alice and she returned the ALICES to Narumi.
After some time mikan starts stealing ALICES too, but she doesnt know y. [:
