It's kind of disappointing to know that the drawings for this particular episode are not as good as the other episodes. Once the setting moves out of the school area, it seems that the designer have no clear idea on how the outside world should look like and as a result, the surrounding background images look dull and uninspired. The city looks like a bunch of tall boxes lined up one after another without any interesting feature to distinguish one set of buildings from the rest. Thankfully what the episode lacks in style, it makes up a lot in the storyline. I think plot-wise, the series is definitely heading in the right direction. It's good to see how some of the minor words or conversation that seems meaningless in the previous episodes finally becomes clear in this episode.

This one begins with Hotaru finding the recording ring that she gave to Mikan one episode ago. At the same time, B Class teacher alerted all of the other teachers about the two runaway students. Jinno-sensei is especially unhappy when he finds out that the students are Sumire and Mikan. The two girls themselves are seen running out of breath trying to catch the car. Thankfully the two then spot a bicycle and uses it to chase the car. Unfortunately, several teachers have now been dispatched to catch the two. Sumire suggests that maybe Mikan should let herself get caught by the teachers so she can explain the situation while Sumire continue to chase after the car. Mikan who dislikes the idea ends up arguing with Sumire instead of focusing on steering the bike. Not surprisingly, the bike ends up hitting a sidewalk road divider.

To make matters worse, the teachers manage to catch the two and try to take the girls back to the school. Mikan tries to explain that Natsume was kidnapped but the teachers do not believe them. All of a sudden, however, the teachers are attacked by a bunch of Crows that are controlled by Ruka-pyon. This allows Mikan and Sumire to run away and jump into a truck carrying a bunch of pigs. Meanwhile, Ruka finds it hard to believe that Natsume is kidnapped. But when Hotaru plays the recording from the ring she gave to Mikan, he suggests that they find Narumi-sensei quickly. Back to the squabbling duo, they have now lost track of the car due to the incident. So Sumire has no choice but to use her Alice: a dog/cat sense of smell that she uses to find out the car's whereabouts. Unfortunately, their tracking attempt has now been detected by Reo's driver.

Meanwhile, Hotaru and Ruka is in the middle of explaining the whole situation to Narumi and Jinno-sensei. The teacher at first find it hard to believe until Narumi tells them that he found out that Reo never really broke his leg so his reason for entering the school's hospital is a suspect to begin with. Meanwhile, Mikan and Sumire manages to spot the car again so they starts to chase after it again. Mikan thinks that they should get a Taxi or at least hitchhike a car but Sumire disagree because Reo will be suspicious and they don't know what kind of dangerous Alices his henchmen may have. Because of this, they can't involve normal people/innocent bystanders. Sumire tells Mikan that when she told Mikan how people with Alices are different from other human being, she also thinks that they have different responsibility because of this.

Upon hearing this, Mikan agrees to keep chasing after the car but it seems they don't have to do that because the car suddenly appears and stops in front of them. When the car moves again, it is obvious that they both have been captured as well by Reo and his henchmen. Meanwhile, the school cultural festival has started at Alice Academy. Unfortunately for Mikan's special group, their RPG booth seems to have no visitor. Tsubasa and Misaki also wonders what happen to Mikan so Tsubasa decides to go and look for his kouhai. Back to Mikan, she finds herself waking up next to Natsume and Sumire inside an abandoned warehouse. Despite finally regaining consciousness, the two girls decide to pretend that they're still asleep so that they don't alert Reo's suspicion. Thanks to this they find out that a ship will pick them at 2 o'clock.

They also find out a bit information about Natsume and his 'Black Cat' identity. Apparently 'Black Cat' is a code name that Natsume used when he works as an illegal special military force under the supervision of Persona from Alice Academy. Reo also says that 2 years ago, when Natsume was only 8 years old, he turned the entire town where he used to live into a sea of fire in one night. The incident was covered up by the country and Natsume is then assigned to the dangerous alice group. People pretend to not know that children are brought up to be secret operative in this agent training section of this school. The two girls are shocked upon hearing this but Sumire tries to convince herself and Mikan that Natsume can't be as bad as he sounds. Mikan, however, is more concerned with getting away from the place before the situation becomes more dangerous.

Impression:

It's good to see the episode stays consistently tense and dark throughout, despite some light comedy here and there. On top of this, the episode also does a good job in fleshing out the characterisation of Sumire. Her refusal to put normal people in danger in their quest to find Natsume certainly gives her character a bit more depth. The best thing about this episode, however, is the juxtaposition of the happy, funland park imagery of the school festival and the grim reality of how the school quietly train some of their students into secret operatives. It's interesting how within half season, the series has progressively change its perspective. When the series started, it seems that the main problem lies with the students and not the school.

By now, however, it's obvious that the students act that way because the school is notorious for mistreating its students. This is a school where a teacher can give its students a crappy living standard if he/she feels like it, or punish the students by inflicting pain or other corporal punishments. The school is also full of teachers who lie to their students, use their students as a tool for their own means, and mistreat them due to a personal vendetta that the students are not even aware of. It's ironic how some of the seemingly ridiculous things that Mikan imagined about the school back in episode 2 were not so far fetched after all. The problem is, this means that the school is as bad as Reo's group when it comes to treating Alice kids.

I watched the episode 14 and I can't believe that natsume turned his town into a SEA OF FIRE...So it means that natsume killed lots of people.....and this is impossible isn't it?

February 13, 2005 | Dragosmore wrote:

oh, its possible all right. He burnt down his entire town and killed everyone in it - including his family members. Remember hearing "Onii-san" in a previous episode with fiery bg flashback? Onii-san = older brother, natsume had a little sister. Whether he still does or not, is still unknown in manga, but, I assume she died in the incident.

So... Natsume destroyed his whole village but... what does that have to do with Reo and his henchman? What purpose does Natsume serve to Reo? It makes no sense to me : |

I think Natsume killed his town by accident, or someone did something so that his power got out of his hand.

I can't wait to find out what happened.

February 13, 2005 | Dragosmore wrote:

The main thing with Reo and everyone is that they're part of an anti-Academy group. To simply say what they do... they're an organization who kidnaps Alice kids and sells them to other organizations overseas or elsewhere to be used by those other companies. In the episode, there was a scene where one of the henchman was all "We need to find out what those other two girls' Alice's are if we're to sell them." Eeeeevil people.

At 410 Yen (3.8 US Dollars) it's a bargain!! (man, Amazon JP should pay me for this advertising service) :-)

The seventh book comes out in March/April.
If you want the book 'in your hands' (hard copy, I guess) to read, then check out if there is a 'Kinokuniya' bookstore near you or near a friend/relative of yours. They are few and far between, if you're not in Japan. For example, the closest one to Brisbane (where I am) is Sydney's branch, the only branch in the whole of Australia. There are, of course, other ways and means to get the books. Online, for example. If your computer can 'read' a Japanese interface, go to 'www.hakusensha.com', the enter the site, then find the 'hana to yume' section and click on 'gakuen arisu' and it will take you to the booklist. Of course, Kinokuniya usually has it available to buy before the hakusensha book shop peoples do, odly enough... To find locations for 'Kinokuniya', go to 'www.kinokuniya.com' and go from there.

Oh, and thanks for clearing up that mess back in episode 13, Garten.

For the whole 'bad animation' for buildings and things... would that not be because they want to show that the outside world is DULL and BOOORIIING??? I imagine that that would have to be it... Then again, maybe they're just not as talented when it comes to that... I prefer to think 'number one' here...

garten, but if you for example talk about this series because you know a lots of things ( you probably have the manga): the others without the manga can't talk about it !!!!!!!so i'm not saying that we have to talk only about how obtain it, but if you can't read or see images of the manga, I, for example, can't express myself about it!

February 14, 2005 | Garten wrote:

Andrea, I understand that. But it's obvious by now that none of us here can provide anything other than our knowledge of the series. So to have people keep asking where to find (insert something), will actually be more counterproductive to the discussion than it'll help. If there is a part of the plot that you are not clear about, then try asking about it. There's always a possibility that one of us here can answer it. Then we can begin a discussion from there.

That's because Mikan, Natsume and Ruka each eat these lollies that, up until they have been fully consumed, let you 'grow up' or 'grow down'. They do this in order to find a particular hole in the High School area - an area where non-High School-ians can not enter - in order to save both Hotaru-chan and Iinchou (Tobita Yuu-kun).

*sPoiLeR eNd*

There, I won't say any more - that'd be giving away the plot...

*sPoiLeR rE-sTaRt*

So, I found this picture on the web, from book seven-to-be, and it shows the woman who took Iinchou's Alice onlooking a Mikan-locked-up-in-a-dungeon-like-thingie!!! I can't wait until it comes out - I don't want to spoil the surprise by trying to find the Hana to Yume weekly (or is it fortnightly, or even monthly?...) magazine postings...

*sPoiLeR rE-eNd*

Ok, ok, I'm going now...

*can't wait for the next update*

P.S. I sure hope as hell that they don't have the incident of the anime jumping ahead of the manga!!!...
