The series finally moves in to deal with the curse part of the story. As usual, however, there are more questions asked than answered, and it's getting a bit frustrating sometimes. Having said that, this is a rather interesting chapter that deals with Kureno and his association with Akito. It seems unlike the other Sohmas, Kureno really cares about Akito. And interestingly enough, unlike the other Sohmas, there is something else that makes Kureno a little bit different. This chapter also shows the other side of Shigure that has always been hinted at but was never shown clearly before. Unfortunately, there is not much of anyone else in this chapter apart from some minor story about Izusu, Yuki and Momiji. I supposed it's a nice break after the rather couple-heavy focus of the previous chapter.
The chapter begins with Akito complaining to Kureno that the weather is cold so Kureno decides to close the window in Akito's room. He then asks Akito if Akito still feels sick. Instead of answering his question, however, Akito asks Kureno to move closer to him. He then tells Kureno that he knows that he occasionally say cruel things to him but he hopes that Kureno knows that he doesn't mean it. He also hopes Kureno knows why he said those things. Akito then asks Kureno if Kureno will always stay by side. Kureno confirms that he intends to do just that and proceeds to hug Akito. Elsewhere inside the school, Arisa is startled by the arrival of Tohru and Hanajima. Arisa and Hanajima then complained about how they have to help out the school to prepare for the upcoming graduation ceremony even when the weather is cold. While the two converses, Tohru begins to remember some things that happened during the New Years Day.
It started with Izusu telling Tohru that somehow she woke up and found herself sleeping sideways instead of in her original sitting position. Tohru guessed that probably Kazuma put Izusu in the correct sleeping position but Izusu tells her that it's impossible for anyone to do that without awaking her. Tohru then wonders if the same thing will happen if the person was Hatsuharu. Izusu admits that Haru is an exception. The conversation, however, made Izusu wonder how Tohru knows about hers and Haru's relationship. The truth is, Tohru remembers it from the conversation between Haru and Hiro before the Cinderella school play. Tohru, however, decides to tell Izusu that it's a woman's intuition. In reply, Izusu tells Tohru that Tohru hasn't got any. Never the less, Izusu tells Tohru that it's okay for now but she asks Tohru not to ever mention Haru's name again because she and Haru have parted ways. Their conversation is then halted by Yuki, who arrives to wish Tohru a Happy New Year.
Tohru is surprised to see Yuki's bandaged forehead and Yuki has no choice but to tell her that Akito struck him because he tells Akito what's on his mind. Yuki admits that he was scared at the time but, he persevered. Momiji then appears to tell Tohru that he has also successfully gave the DVD to Kureno. Tohru seems to be really touched about this and hope that Kureno will soon know about Arisa's feeling for him. Anyway, back to the present, Tohru is startled by Arisa who asks her what's she's been thinking. Before Tohru can tell her anything, however, Hanajima already tells the two to get back to the class. The scene then shifts to Shigure and Hatori talking about how Akito got sick again and as usual, the cause is psychological. Shigure also tells Hatori that he got in trouble because he didn't come immediately to Akito's side after the argument with Yuki. It is also suggested that Shigure is a tad jealous because Akito chooses Kureno to be his right hand person. He even started to suggest to Hatori that he thinks that Kureno is 'unusual'.
Speaking of the person, Kureno is seen in front of a computer watching the DVD of Arisa's performance. His mind, however, is divided between watching the DVD and remembering Akito's childhood. It seems Akito and Kureno has quite a bond even when Akito was a kid. Akito even said once that he wanted to become a bird like Kureno. It is also worth noted that during his childhood, Akito appears like a normal, happy child. Anyway, it doesn't take long before Kureno's attention becomes really focused on the DVD and Arisa's pseudo 'performance'. Kureno seems to be quite taken with Arisa especially when he remembers how Tohru once mentioned that Arisa wants to see him again. However, Kureno becomes confused and stressed out when he remembers a chibi Akito asking someone not to abandon him. Fast forward to possibly a couple of hours later, Shigure receives a phone call from Kureno.
Kureno wishes to talk to Tohru but Shigure seems to be dismissive of his request, claiming that Tohru hasn't returned from school. Upon hearing this, Kureno tells Shigure that he also wants to discuss something with Shigure. Not long after the conversation, Tohru comes home and is greeted by Shigure. Tohru quickly informs him that Yuki is with the student council as usual and Kyou is still at Kazuma's. Upon hearing this, Shigure asks Tohru if she doesn't mind going out again to buy 2 envelopes for him. Being the kind person that she is, Tohru agrees immediately. After Tohru left, however, it is obvious that Shigure has something else on his mind when asking her to buy the envelope because his expression has now turned sinister. Meanwhile, Tohru is seen in a park trying to approach a group of birds. But when she tries to pet them, they fly away. The chapter ends by showing Tohru face to face with Kureno. Behind them, there's a shot of chibi Akito screaming and a narration saying "Have you by any chance been freed from the curse?".
Impression:
This is an interesting albeit a confusing chapter. I don't understand much of what's going on, especially the last comment about someone has been freed from the curse. From Shigure and Hatori's discussion, however, it seems the person in question is Kureno. But it's not clear how Kureno managed to achieve this feat. The more obvious part of the story, however, is Shigure's machinations. It's been suggested for a while that there is more to Shigure than the silly, horny old dog mask that he puts on. But it has never been made obvious before. In this chapter though, he really shows some of his feelings. It's clear that he's jealous of Kureno's position and I can't help but wonder what was on his mind when he looks sinister after asking Tohru to buy him some envelopes. Last but not least, there is Akito. I personally think it's a bit late to make him likeable but it seems the author tries to do just that here. Something seems to have happened in the past that triggered his madness. As suggested by Shigure and Hatori's conversation, Akito's sickness is more psychological than physical.
Very cool.(More Yuki though!)
As always your review of this chapter has been very helpful. I am really looking forward to the next chapter. I can't wait to see what becomes of this meeting with Tohru and Kureno. :D
i read somewhere that Kureno may have been freed of the curse because he truly understands Akito (i.e. once the Junnishi and God understand one another the curse will be lifted). Anyways, thanks for putting the chap up^^
I have always thought that Akito never was the one to fault... Well previously I believed that it had to do more with the curse...that the looming death of his was taunting him. It was slowly turning his heart cold... but maybe it had to do with Shigure. (That’s why I've never hated him... he's my favorite character)
___________________________________________
Hatori: ...You're calling me unfair.
Shigure: haha
True.
I am... ...eh?
I said this to someone before...
Who was that? Doesn't really matter?
(It’s on page 17, I think)
___________________________________________
Maybe he said that to Akito or maybe even Kureno... it could be the starting point of someone's madness...
Kureno seems to have been close to Akito even as a child...(like you said) He was probably there all the times Akito had breakdowns soo most likely he formed a close bond that didn't involve the curse.(it wasn't an obligation because he was the 'God') It might have been what broke Kureno away from the curse. (if he has been...)
Shigure... I used to love his personality but lately it has been pissing me off totally. I understand why Akito told him to go away. Shigure only goes to Akito when he wants to make mischief or has something to gain from it. That's not the kind of person anyone would want to be around.
Yeah, over all I think this is an awesome chapter. I love when you have to think deep about the plot from beginning to end. With Japanese manga even the smallest details count. ^-^
-ash-
P.S. Thanks for getting this out so fast. I didn't expect it. (I'm the who emailed you about it)
I love how detailed you describe the story. It helps me to follow along with the original version since all I can read is english.
Whoa... Creepy, Ne? This manga is turning almost darkish, and much more angsty than it was before. These things really make you wonder....
Btw... Does anyone know if the manga is re-drawn for the english versions? The art in each of them is very different.... If you know, can you email me? Thanxx
I really appreciate your summary every week.
I personally think it's a bit late to make him likeable
I think that on that point that it was implied in the new year's flashback with chibi junishi that Akito was a sweet kid when he was young (the passage where it was described how junishi react when they first see Akito did get me) and Shigure told once that Akito was the one who stay behind in his dark room during Hatsuharu and momiji's first entrance ceremony.
I always like Akito from far, wishing a flashback explanation, because I love his relationship with Shigure's generation
hey there ! i was wondering if theres any chance in yuki havinq a closer relationship with tohru . im always so amazed to see how he always tries to show tohru how he felt in various ways . wasnt she the first one who allowed him / to actually made him smile or laugh ? its so weird to see the tables turned to kyou . . . and wasnt yuki supposedly tohrus childhood first love ? [[ the boy in the cap that rescued her ]]
-- one more question . . .
whats the difference between the magazine and the manga ?
Christine, at the moment Yuki doesn't have a romantic interest in Tohru. He considers her as his surrogate mother. Unfortunately, I don't know what will happen in the future because as much as I wish it, I don't write the story.
There's no difference between the magazine and the manga content-wise. The magazine simply gives you the story faster but one chapter at a time as opposed to per volume (6 chapters), which you get if you buy the manga.
i got to agree with christine..watching the anime makes me convinced that yuki does have a thing for tohru. i remember this scene where he gave her this ribbon, and he kissed it! but i dont know...maybe time changed the character ^^ looking forward to your next summaries! (isn`t there only 14 volumes out? it only goes up to chapter 84 right? how did you get chapter 85-96?)
Although the tank are only available up to vol.14, you can get the latest chapter by purchasing a weekly manga magazine called Hana to Yume. This is a compilation magazine containing weekly manga such as Fruits Basket, Skip Beat, Gakuen Alice, and Global Garden to name a few.
thanks! but im not japanese..im still waiting for the 8-14th english version of fruits basket to come out -.-" and i really have no clue where to buy it! but, do you have any idea when the ch.85-96 and so on to come out?
I think the Japanese version of vol.15 will come out sometimes this September but I'm not sure what's the exact date.
Wow thanks so much. I've been following this for a little bit now but I just now decided to post. I love the Furuba manga. There's such a great mythology, and you're always surprised. Thanks for doing this ^_^
Tessa: I don't think they redraw it at all. I think it looks different between the english manga and these chapters is because the english manga is still in the early stages, and by these chapters, they have grown a bit older and so they look older. (look that that color picture! I was shocked at how much older Yuki looked! I hadn't noticed it til now!)
Wow that was a shocker I only have 1-4 volume of fruits basket =(. I can't find any other english virsions of fruits basket cause they havn't come out in America yet that I know of. So did he really get realesed from the curse?
um....i really love your websirte, though i am am a little bit clueless about weather or not that this is part of the series or not.Is this the Manga or something i am so sorry.i really do love the website, keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!!!!
Me my favorite characters are Atory and Shigure and i can tell you that the manga doesn't look a thing like the anime I find the manga mysterious i can't wait to see how it ends that what so exiting about it. I think it's a suspence i own all4 DVD plus 5 mangas and their the best, beside fugishi yugi. I have 1,2,3,4,and 7 and Kureno doesn't feature in it i can't wait to know about this mysterious caracter in the upcoming manga and rin too.
this summary was cool..but now I wanna know what happens in vol. 11 all the more so I can catch up to this part.I've been buying the french translations. 1 'cause I can't find the english ones & 2 'cause they went further than the english translations. vol.11 came out Sept. 14/15 in France so it should reach Mtl soon (i hope).
There's a part in one of the manga's where Haru asks Yuki if he loves Tohru (if I remember correctly) and Yuki says yes, so I was figuring he likes her that way, but Kyo also really seems to like her. At the beginning of the mangas we learn that she liked Yuki, but now she cares for both of them a lot...if it ever comes to where she has to choose between the two...what happens if she falls in love with both of them, but she'll have to choose which'll hurt one of them, but she's incapable of hurting either one so will she be able to choose or not choose either and I sooooooo wanna read more!!!!
I found another manga by the same mangaka, it's called "Tsubasa wo Motsu Mono" but it's not translated at all so I have to wait for the scanlations and I can tell you it's just as captivating. So I be in a rut, 'cause I can't continue either one. WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaa :(
hi! in the anime version, there are only 26 chapters! I love you for detailing the story.
:-D more power,
Jen!
Ohh! Interesting and very detailed! can't wait for next chapter! I can't wait for all the volume to be released in America
How do people know stuff without the manga being released in America? Anyways, I can't wait for it! Sounds good. ^_^
Every time Shigure is evil, I want to cry. He has always been my favorite character, notably because there was an element of mystery behind the nonchalant mask he always wears. I truly hope he redeems himself, although I am starting to believe he might not. Oh well - being evil has it's perks...I will just have to find some other way to appreciate him!
I could be wrong--being so very far behind--but it seems likely that Yuki's first interest in Tohru was that sort of infatuation and care that the truly kind and charismatic person can draw out of people. For Yuki, whatever their relationship, Tohru will always be the catalyst to his becoming a stronger person.
I still remember in the first or second volume how both Kyou and Yuki ran home rather than leave Tohru lonely for the holiday--New Year's I think I recall. I didn't quite sense anything romantic on either guy's side: they just knew they belonged by her at that moment. So sweet ;)
(yes, I love mushy stuff...if it's not overdone)
it is the best book ever! there should be about 35 books.
AWESOME
