Fruits Basket ch.89

February 23, 2004 | 18 Comments

Yikes, I've been too focused on getting the 26th February issue of Shounen Ace (which hopefully will contain a new chapter of Evangelion) to the point that I forgot that there is a new chapter of Fruits Basket inside this week's Hana to Yume. So thanks to those of you who reminded me about it. This chapter turns out to be as thick as the last one and that can't be a good thing as far as I know when it comes to manga chapter releases. Normally a thick chapter is followed by either a very thin chapter on the next issue or no chapter whatsoever. In Furuba's case this time around, there won't be any new Furuba chapter until April 5th, 2004. Well, at least we know when to expect the next chapter. I wish I can say the same thing about EVA and X.

Anyway, this chapter is basically the continuation of the last one. The play is basically over and everyone seems to be happy about the fact, especially Kyou. Kyou's relief, however, soon turned into terror when he realised that Hananajima has been engaging in a friendly conversation with his foster father, Kazuma. Kyou is so shocked that his words end up looking more like the four symbols of Playstation buttons: square, triangle, x, and circle (it's not a secret that the author of Furuba is actually an avid video-gamer as well). Back to Kyou, he's even more terrified when he recalls the conversation that Hanajima once had with Arisa and Tohru about how good looking his foster father is. I find this scene to be quite funny as Kyou begs his foster father to never get married at all. This, of course, puzzles Kazuma who doesn't know the source of Kyou's anxiety (having Hanajima as his stepmom).

Kazuma then mentions to Kyou how sorry he is that he's late to see the play in its entirety. Kyou realises that someone has told his foster father about the play and when Haru comes up behind them, he knows that it's Haru who has invited Kazuma. Although he pretends otherwise (by placing his hand around Haru's neck as if trying to wrestle-choke him), it's obvious that Kyou is grateful to Haru for inviting his foster father. Haru then proceeds to tease Kyou further by saying that Momiji taped the entire play so that if Kazuma wants to watch it, he's free to borrow the tape from them. Kazuma then tells Kyou that he needs to leave now because he has some kind of business to attend to but before doing so, he wants to give his regards to Tohru.

Upon hearing Tohru's name, Kyou's suddenly remembers the words that Tohru said when they were doing the play and wonders if it's possible that....but then he hesitates and thinking that it's not possible and then back to wondering it's still possible that Tohru....well, Kyou's full thoughts are not revealed in the story so I guess it's up to the audience to figure it out themselves. But I don't think it's that hard to figure out what he thinks considering that the series has been hinting at these two for quite a while now. The next scene is that of Tohru herself who gets to meet Arisa in the bathroom. Tohru once again looks like that she's about to tell her friend that the Kureno that Arisa likes is actually a part of the Sohma clan as well but she changes her mind and instead tell Arisa that she's about to meet Momiji and the others.

Not long after she left the bathroom, Tohru meets Kisa, Momiji, Hiro, and Haru. Tohru asks Momiji if it's possible to see the play that Momiji taped without using the camcorder. Momiji replies that he supposed he can transfer it to DVD and give it to Kureno, correctly guessing that Tohru wants Kureno to watch Arisa in the play. Haru then reminds Momiji that it's time that he returns to the class. He also tells Hiro to be careful. This somehow leads Hiro to say that Haru should not be too kind to everyone because it's going to make Rin sad. Upon hearing what he said himself, Hiro realised that once again he's burst into anger to someone who doesn't deserve it. Anyway, Haru doesn't seem to be angry. Instead, he teased Hiro by asking the boy if he by any chance has a crush on Rin. The whole conversation, is quietly observed by Tohru who wonders if there is something going on between Haru and Rin.

The next scene shows Yuki back at the student council room where he receives compliment from Kimi about his performance or rather, his dress, which Kimi seems to want to borrow. Nao, however, is more concerned about their duty as the student council and asks if Yuki can make rounds. Yuki, not wanting to piss off Nao decides to do the rounds and on his way sees that Machi is being harassed by the Prince Yuki club members. Yuki is about to help Machi but before he manage to do so, he's stopped by Manabe who tells him not to do that because if he does, he'll end up making things even more difficult for Machi. Especially since the girl who harassed Machi are Yuki's fans, which means that Yuki's interference will be seen by the fans as Yuki favouring Machi and will make life more difficult for Machi. Manabe continues to say that it's his principle that when someone is attacked or oppressed by another person then it's better for that person to confront the attacker/oppressor on his/her own initiative because otherwise things will never change.

Yuki thinks that's a good argument but there's also people who suffer because of such ideals and still insist on stopping the harassment. Manabe, however, has a better idea and asks Yuki to wait for a while. While waiting, Yuki gets to hear the Prince Yuki members ordering Machi to say 'sorry' for having the audacity to say that Yuki does not have a Prince-like quality. Machi calmly apologises but that doesn't seem to please the girls from the Prince Yuki clubs who suspect that Machi may like Yuki. They asks Machi what she thinks of Yuki and Machi honestly tells them that Yuki is not what he seems and that he seems to be a lonely person even though he's surrounded by many people and referred to as a 'Prince' by other students. Hearing this, the girls got even angrier and tells Machi not to have funny thoughts. Before they can go further, however, they are stopped by a intercom announcement which tells them that there'll be some kind of photo session with Yuki today and that everyone should come soon if they don't want to miss out.

Upon hearing the announcement, the Prince Yuki club immediately runs in droves to get their picture taken with Yuki and leaves Machi alone. It turns out the announcement was made by Manabe who used it to bait the girls to stop harassing Machi. Yuki praised Manabe for his decision and tells him that Machi seems to be okay and that she seems to think that Yuki is not a Prince. Manabe nods in agreement and said that he thinks Yuki is more like a 'Princess'. LOL. This joke, of course, earns the ire of Yuki who proceeds to drag Manabe through the school hall by picking his ear, leaving poor Manabe crying that Yuki is hurting him and that he swears he won't do it again and begs the 'Princess' to let him go. LOL. It's always comedy gold when Manabe gets to interact with Yuki.

We then gets to see Tohru bumping into Kyou and the two suddenly become awkward with one another. Kyou attempts to start a conversation by asking why she's carrying what looks like bento boxes and glass. Tohru awkwardly answers that it's because Kisa and everyone else is in the school so she wants to give them lunch. The two then seem to be tongue-tied and can't say anything else but uhm and oh. Tohru then asks Kyou if he's been enjoying himself. Kyou tells her that he is especially with his foster father around and all. We then get a peek at their train of thoughts where Kyou desperately tries to tell himself not to think like 'that' about Tohru and vice versa. The chapter ends with a note that a faint hope and feelings have emerge in Tohru and Kyou's hearts but Kyou desperately tries to deny it for some unknown reason.

Note: I'm sorry to have to say this but please don't link straight to the pictures. If you want to link, please link to the index page of this site. Otherwise the bandwidth for this site will decrease rapidly and no one can see the pictures. Also, there's a possibility that I'm going to change server soon so it's not a good idea to link straight to the pictures because there'll be missing links once the server change has happened. Thanks.

Yay.. more Fruits Basket goodness... Thank you again. And people should know better than to direct link, sucking up bandwidth is evilness. Kyou and Tohru are so cute. I wish they would just get together.. And I think Yuki and Machi would make a sweet couple, once they both get past all their parental issues and things like that.
