I realised that it's been a while since I wrote anything Furuba related. As I've mentioned before, I lost my interest in the series a few months ago and unfortunately, I haven't completely regained that interest. I just thought that lately the storyline has become a bit boring although I can't exactly pinpoint the problem. I think it's mostly because the series changed its focus from the everyday life theme to shocking revelations after revelations. I think the strength of Furuba lies in its character interactions and the small moments shared by those characters. This chapter seems to mark the return of this kind of interaction. Having said that, this is not a sign that I'm going to continue doing this on a permanent basis. I'm just going to feature whatever chapter I think is interesting from time to time just like other manga that I cover. Anyway, the focus this time is on the confrontation between Tohru and Akito, which I think suggests that the series is coming to a close very soon.
Previously on Furuba: Tohru confessed to Kyou that she likes him but Kyou told her that she knew nothing about him. He then started to tell her that he could have save her mother back then but chose not to because doing so would have revealed his transformation secret. Kyou then told Tohru that he never meant to fall in love with her and never expected her to love him back before running away from her. Yuki who saw the last bit of their conversation promised Tohru to bring Kyou back. Unfortunately this gave a knife-holding Akito the opportunity to approach Tohru. This chapter begins with Tohru thinking that even though it was sad that Kyou couldn't save her mother, she thinks that back then the way his eyes look was far sadder. At the same time, she's rather surprised to see Akito holding a knife whilst telling her that the end is coming. Akito then asks Tohru if she will throw and leave everything behind.
At the same time, Yuki runs into Shigure, who apparently smells like a stinky alcohol. Shigure explains that he just went drinking with a friend called Satsuka Nakama. Yuki can't believe that Shigure has been drinking until this kind of hour (presumably late). He thinks that as a guardian, Shigure should be more responsible. He, however, remembers his mission and quickly tells Shigure that he doesn't care what he does and asks Shigure if he knows where "That idiot" went. Shigure quickly realises that Yuki is talking about Kyou but he tells Yuki that unfortunately he hasn't seen Kyou. Yuki becomes panic upon hearing this and wonders if Kyou went into another direction. Upon seeing Yuki's behaviour, Shigure wonders what Kyou has done this time around. Yuki tells Shigure that he does not know the exact detail but "That idiot" has made Tohru cried. Back to Tohru, she thinks how she feels as if she's been left behind.
At the same time, Akito is now asking Tohru if she is happy that she's won. Not only Tohru has taken away her position and made her an outsider, everyone also likes her. Akito thinks that Tohru must feel good about all of these. Upon hearing this, Tohru thinks that being left behind feels sad and that now she sees the true Akito. Meanwhile, Akito continues spewing her venom and tells Tohru that she hates her. She hates Tohru for destroying her world and yet manages to maintain that 'clean' image. Akito thinks Tohru is the dirtiest of them all. Instead of being afraid, however, Tohru approaches Akito and tells her that all of these times, Akito has always been here. Akito is shocked to hear this and manages to use her knife to swipe Tohru's arm. She orders Tohru not to get any closer because Tohru makes her feel sick. At the same time, Tohru realises that she's been thinking only about herself and feels ashamed about it.
Tohru tells Akito that she thinks Akito has always been sad and yet she has maintained a strong facade right from the start. Ever since her birth, Akito has always been 'special'. The line has been drawn as such that Akito will be located on top of everyone else instead of within the circle. Tohru, however, thinks that being treated this way is similar to being left behind. She also realises that Akito wants eternal and unchanging world because to wish otherwise is a scary thing. This seems to strike a nerve in Akito, leading her to slap Tohru and tell the girl to shut up. Akito basically doesn't want Tohru to deceive her. Tohru, however, continues to speak and tells Akito that she agrees with Akito's words that she is indeed 'dirty'. Tohru admits that even though she tries to put a stop to Akito's 'Unchanging' wish, the truth is she herself at one point wished for an unchanging feelings, referring to her love for her mother.
Tohru then cries and quietly tells her mother that she now has found someone that she loves, referring to Kyou. She thinks that if living means changing oneself then she feels that it is some form of cruel tenderness. Even though she's really afraid, even though Kyou said that the entire thing was disillusion, Tohru admits that she loves Kyou. Even if her love may not be reciprocated, Tohru realises that she doesn't want to wait any longer. With that in mind, she quietly tells her mother that she's leaving. Tohru then tells Akito that feelings can't be bound and she believes that Akito must have realised it somewhat. This is why it always feels scary, sad, difficult, and lonely. Upon hearing this, however, Akito remembers some of the people who have left her. She freaks out and runs away from Tohru, telling her that she doesn't want that kind of world. Akito is afraid of living in a world where strangers exist and promises, bond, eternity are non-existent.
Akito realises that in this kind of world, there is no guarantee that she'll be loved by someone. She can't live in a world surrounded by strangers. Upon hearing this, Tohru tells Akito that in that case, why doesn't Akito start with her? Tohru then extends her hand and tells Akito that her name is Honda Tohru and asks what is Akito's name since she wants to be Akito's friend. Akito at first rejects the offer and tells Tohru that she's lying. She thinks that Tohru will be annoyed when she cries or will become angry when she is stubborn. She thinks Tohru will become sick of her very quickly. But Tohru keeps offering her hand, and Akito eventually realises that she likes the idea of having Tohru as a company. Akito begins to offer her hand in return but before she can reach Tohru's hand, all of a sudden the ground where Tohru stands collapses, taking Tohru with it. The chapter ends with Akito looking shocked as Tohru lies lifeless on the ground.
Impression:
I think this chapter did a good job of making Akito easy to relate and feel sorry for. No one likes being lonely and Akito certainly believes that she won't be lonely if she can maintain this 'unbreakable bond' with her Juunishi members. But like Tohru said, nothing in this world is unchanging. There is no guarantee that a person will always love another. And I think despite Akito's insistence that the concept of the Juunishi works for her, the reality shows a very different result. The Juunishi are afraid of her but they are not necessarily care about her. This is why I find her change of heart in the end to be rather moving. And for it to end like that was a nice twist. Don't get me wrong, I think Akito is still a disturbed person in some ways. But I take this as a sign that she's willing to change. I wonder now if she'll tell the others that Tohru has an accident or if she'll go back to her old ways and simply feel satisfied about the incident.
Yes! Thank you for a furuba chapter! I have read about this elsewhere, and now I can get a better impression of what actually happend.
But, how can Akito act so nice?
I still feel that Akito is still a character that I feel no sympathy for simply because she has tortured the other zodiac members way too much. Thanks for a great summary, and Kyo is an idiot.....I hope hecomes back to Tohru.

It got me back into Furuba! I read other forums about this chapter and alot of fans don't want Tohru to die. Am I alone in thinking the story won't move as much if she doesn't die. For the start of the story, I had a feeling that she would die in helping/getting involved with the Sohmas. Am I the only one that thought that?
Excellent summary. I'm surprised to find Furuba here again after such a long absence. Like many, I've also lost interest in the series especially with the recent volumes.
I feel that since the series is coming to a close, everything is happening haphazardly. Personally, the current character developments seem very empty and poor. The characters have taken such a turn where I no longer feel any attachment or sympathy for them, their feelings or their flaws. How disappointing Tohoru and Kyo's characters have become. I hope that changes in the next few chapters. That once endearing quality of the series has lost in the shadows.
Nevertheless, this chapter has regained a little bit of my interest in the series again and I'm glad. We get to see Tohoru regain some of her "selfless" qualities that made her so unique. Hopefully, as the end drawns closer, the quality of the story redeems the series and prevents it from ending in a pathetic thud.

I lost interest in Furuba around after the 100 chapter or so for the same reasons. I only really 'kept up' with it through friends who were still interested and tell me at what point they were in the story. I think with this, it's finally picked up and soon the story will come to an end - I did think in the beginning with a curse like this, Tohru would have to die or something like that to break it.. but I also thought the story in the beginning seemed too comedic to really pull something like that off. Here's to waiting for the next chapter..

Wow, I've lost all interest in Furuba after the earlier chapters (up until the anime left off) because I couldn't find any scanslations, and at the time there are no such things as Tokyopop/Viz/Del Rey translated manga :P I'm surprised that I've missed out on a lot!
First of all, Akito is a SHE?! Ok, now I know i've missed a lot.
And yay for Tohru for recognizing her feelings :) I'm glad she'll end up with Kyou instead of Yuki, since Yuki was never my favourite. (Although his moments with Kyou are always funny - ahhh I've missed this.)
Maybe I'll pick up the manga again when I see them at the stores :D But I tell you these people are pretty slow in putting out those volumes...

Vol. 18 is the current volume (book form) in Japan. In Hana To Yume magazine,they are up to chapter 121, which will be in Vol. 21, when the book form comes out.

The series did hit a bit of a rut after the 100th chapter, as far as Tohru and Kyo go, but what those who stopped following really missed were some wonderful developments and changes in Yuki's character. The student council was possibly one of the sole redeeming factors.
It seems like Tohru has hit the ground already.
I still love this series so much, and I actually really like Akito. I think many people in some ways, can connect to her character. At least, at one point or another.
I remember reading a theory somewhere that Tohru would die, since Takaya-sensei tends to kill off the "Tohru-like" character. And seeing this, I think I agree. XD And it would lead to an interesting turn, if Tohru WERE to die. But I'm not a Tohru-hater, so this wouldn't please me at all. XD;
I really liked this chapter though, and I'm very excited for chapter 122. ^_^

2.) How is it possible that Shigure slept with Ren? I thought only the girls from Juunishi can hug/touch the Juunishi boys?
3.) Are all the Soumas in the Juunishi close-related relatives? Because Haruhatsu and Rin as lovers bother me a lot ^^;; And same with Kisa and Hiro (it's incest, isn't it?)

4.) The Juunishi boys can "touch" Akito too? Without transforming to human form?! OMG~!

2. I HAVE NO IDEA. maybe being the mother of "God" or sleeping with the previous "God" makes you immune to hug/touch juunishi thingy
3. LOL i don't think they're first cousins, AT LEAST I HOPE NOT. The souma clan is pretty big. remember there is the outside village and the inside village, kana, hatori's ex-girlfriend is part of the souma clan too. Think of the Soumas like all the Chin, Chang, Chen, Wang, Wu's in the world.
4. Yeah again APPARENTLY akito/god is immune from the transforming thing. How else can SHE sleep with them.

Thanks Garten for writing about this chapter, I haven't looked at it yet, waiting for the chinese chapter XP I'm glad that akito didn't kill Tohru, but i still don't really want her to die. Hopefully Akito won't go back to her own ways and think of Tohru falling as some comsic fate that does not allow her (akito) to have friends. I'm really looking forward to the end of furuba.
I really hope Tohru's not dead... that would be a really depressing ending to something that at first appealed to everyone for its comedic aspect. But with it being so heavy as of late, I guess that it's not too much of a surprise. *Sigh* I just think that Tohru falling off of unstable ground is too much of an 'out of the blue' death for it to be suitable.
I will help answer one of the questions.
2. If you look back at the chapter when Ren and shigure are talking in the comfort of Ren's room you see a small flashback in the corner of one of the pages where shigures hand is holding himself over Ren which involves no hugging.
But I find this one of the best chapters yet... I cannot wait until the next one on January 20th

IIRC all the Juunishi are first/second/third cousins and the like, with the exceptions of Ayame and Yuki, who are of course brothers. I'm curious if any fan's put together a Sohma family tree.
In most parts of the world (excluding the United States and including Japan) it is legal to marry or become romantically involved with one's cousin. It is not considered "incest" as it would be if one were involved with a parent or sibling, and the odds of producing a genetically "inferior" child are extremely low to non-existant.
Plus, as already mentioned, the Sohmas are an extremely large family. There's no reason to get jumpy over whether or not Haru/Rin or Hiro/Kisa is incest. The fact that the characters don't see anything wrong with it is a sign that their behavior is acceptable in their culture.

It is delightful, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading all of them. I really hope you continue translating the Furuba chapters, because I would love to continue reading them. Ah, forgot to say what I think about the whole Furuba series. I love it, it's my favourite manga series. So far, I have only been able to collect up to Volume 12, as it is only up to there that the series is translated into English so I can read it.
I myself love all the characters of Furuba, with the slightest exception of Akito and Shigure (and at first, both Rin and Hiro - their first impressions did not impress me, and I am ashamed to say at first, I was very judgemental, but I try not to be anymore). However, I am glad that this chapter finally shows that Akito too is subject to sadness. I do feel pity for her, I openly admit it. Though I disagree with everything she has done to the other Juunishi, and I feel for them. I want her to find her happiness too.
I can't believe Tohru just.... falls like that! A most terrible cliffhanger!
I can see how much the story seems to have progressed since your first translation, Chapter 89...? What I like so much about this series is how deep and meaningful everything is, and I think Takaya-sensei is brilliant indeed. My favourite things to read in Furuba are probably:
1) Scenes of interaction between Yuki, Kakeru and Kimi.
2) Machi and Yuki interaction! (Used to be a die-hard Tohru/Yuki fan, but obviously gave up on that.... So sad...).
3) Mayu, Hatori, Ayame and Shigure - anything about them is hilarious. And I like Hatori and Mayu together.
4) Haru and Yuki's small, quick, but meaningful conversations. Haru's wonderful!
5) Kureno and Arisa are great together, despite the nine-year age difference.
And I always enjoy the humourous parts. They make me laugh despite all the darkness surrounding the characters inside it. I adore Yuki, Haru, Ayame and Momiji, and admit I have never had much of a liking for Kyo (don't ask...), Shigure and Akito, but that makes it all the better. All the characters are all different. Unique, one of a kind, with different backgrounds, pasts, secrets and fears. They are individually different and special and I love how unique they each can be. I love learning more about them.
Gah! Oh look, I've rambled on for so long! I am terrible sorry! Hope I haven't written too much! -_- I'm an idiot!

OMG!! that was sooo sad... i hope tohru's ok.... well rin did get pushed off a building by akito and survived i guess that tohru will be ok...(BAXA!!) oh and CHAPTER 122 will be out on kagesai to yune JAN. 20 . 06.. T_T
~GASP~ A FURUBA CHAPTER! I already knew all the details, but I like hearing summaries from you. ^^ ~points at the final scene with Tohru offering her hand~ SEE!? That RIGHT there is why Tohru is my absolute favorite anime/manga heroine. Also, Y'know how the ground collapsed? It was a landslide. Perhaps chapter 1 was foreshadowing? Another thing someone else brought up on Yahoo! group about Furuba. There was a scene in this chapter at the Juunishi festival. Akito was sitting there alone watching everyone else have fun. Sound familiar? Tohru went through the same thing as a child, watching her classmates play Fruits Basket. So maybe that's part of the reason she's reached out to Akito. Because she understands what Akito's gone through. I'm not all that fond of Akito, but I think I'm softening up to her a little. This is a serious chapter, but I'm glad that there was a little bit of comedy between Shigure and Yuki. I'm also a bit mad at Kyou for running off. I still love him, tho'
Yes! That's right! Volume 1 definitely forshadowed this! The landslide, the childhood thing... It's all fits! ~sigh~ Takaya's awesome.
I hope that Tohru's okay... Akito... I wonder how she will react? I bet the juunishi are going to blame her or something. But I've been thinking... if Tohru does get hurt, it will be a great oppurunity to see how much the Juunishi really love her and feel about her.
It'd be very interesting to see from them all, after all, Tohru is their life-saver pretty much.

My gosh. And the Furuba world falls apart in a downward spiral of madness and death. Please update to 122! Atleast 12 so I can see what happens to Tohru! Even if I'm not exactly pro-Tohru.. Thats a bad way to go. And Akito must have a fourth curse or something, that makes everyone he semi-likes die. And I still say he because I first heard he and still haven't gotten it out of my head.

Tohru hit her head and fainted, Akito runs screaming that she is not moving and Yuki with Shigure heard this! I know that Kureno is a handsome character, but... Who wanna know about him (Shigure tells on the end of the chapter that Kureno is fine) when tohru is more dead than alive? But I think Takaya will not do something like this, and like Dark Scheneider always says "the protagonist cannot die!"

1) (What girl?) A while ago, Yuki decided his feelings for Tohru were more mother-son, and his romantic intrest is Machi (from volume nine...or ten, or something). So no Yuki and Tohru.
2) To find him.

On another note, I was somewhat disappointed Tohru didn't die. It would have made an interesting ending. I've only a slight intrest in the series, but I'll read the end...
Oh, and Chuang Yi, a Singaporean publisher, has translated up to Volume 17 of Fruits Basket. However, I don't believe they sell outside South Asia and Australasia...

Wow, I am amazed how this chapter managed to garner so many responses even though this post dates back to January. I stopped reading Furuba back in volume 10 and basically did all the catching up in the past few days. For the 4 volumes following that I thought over and over how much I'd prefer to see it animated. Then I got to volumes 16-18 and you're right, it was revelation after revelation- I had a shock-o-rama weekend. I think the whole Shigure, Akito and Shigure, Ren relationship complicated things too much. Akito and Ren being mother and daughter at that too. The author established such a strong sense of "purity" and strength in this story that this subplot seems rather out of place. I was a little heartbroken to see this in Furuba yet it was exciting enough for me to continue.
Anyhow, I hope you'll posts Furuba summaries here and there leading up to its finale. I'm also one of those who hope the story will end with the same grace that it began with. Now if only there's a second season for the anime.

In my opinion, I agree with your summary Garten. Alot of people hate Akito because they don't realize how much she hurts inside. She treated the zodiac the way she did because she has never felt love herself and she wishes to belong and to not be lonely anymore. ica n realte to her alot, so I truly understand. I'm not abused, I was just betrayed and I couldn't trust anyone eitehr, just like Akito. i still suffer from that, but I'm slowly growing kinder and learning to trust people again, jsut like Akito. Don't misjudge her.
