Final Fantasy VII: Last Order

This OVA basically chronicles the short story of Cloud's best friend, Zack, as he attempts to free himself and Cloud from Shinra's control and experiments. The story is actually quite similar to the ones that have been told in the game but the OVA presents slight variations on how things happened within the story. Because of this, just like Advent Children, it is necessary to have some knowledge of the game's story prior to watching this OVA. Style-wise, the OVA boasts high quality character design and animation courtesy MadHouse anime studio. The problem is, just like Advent Children this OVA also suffers from a case of style over substance.

The story begins with Zack carrying unconscious Cloud into a darkened forest. In the middle of the forest, however, they are attacked by a group of Shinra soldiers. Meanwhile, inside Shinra building, Tseng, or Zeng according to his name stamp, is seen giving instructions to the soldiers to return because the Turks are about to arrive and take over. Back inside the forest, it becomes apparent that the soldiers are no match against Zack's prowess and skills as he quickly dispatched all of them. Cut back to the Shinra building where Zeng explains that both Zack and Cloud have just escaped from Shinra's research facility 72 hours ago. Zeng adds that he actually knew these men from an incident that happened 5 years ago.

A flashback to 5 years ago shows Sephiroth sliced and diced his way through Nibel, which is now surrounded in fire. Tifa, who felt deceived by Sephiroth decided to confront the guy after hearing the story from one of the villagers. Back in the present day, Tseng receives information that the targets have been found again. Once again Zack is forced to protect not only his own life but also Cloud's. However, thanks to his agility and strength, Zack quickly manages to dispatch the armed soldiers without too much difficulty. Cue in another flashback to 5 years ago when Zack and Cloud, who covered his own face so he won't be recognised, arrived in Nibel and realised that the village had been destroyed by fire.

Zack decided to help Tifa after finding out from a villager that she had gone to confront Sephiroth. Back to the present day, Zack decides to bait the soldiers away from Cloud when all of a sudden a helicopter appears in front of him. From inside the copter, Elena tells Zack that his life will be spared if he surrenders to them. Zack, however, refuses and tells them that what he wants is not an assurance of his life but his freedom. Cue in another flashback to the time when Tifa found his dead father, confronted Sephiroth, and subsequently defeated by the guy. In the present, Zack manages to secure himself a motorbike which he then uses to help himself and Cloud escape from the soldiers and the Turks.

Another flashback shows how Zack found Tifa inside Mako reactor and ended up being blamed for the mess that Sephiroth had created. Feeling that he couldn't do anything else to calm Tifa's anger, Zack decided to take on Sephiroth himself. Unfortunately, despite his best effort, Sephiroth managed to beat him quite easily. Sephiroth, however, was taken by surprise when Cloud managed to stab his back with a sword. Cloud then decided to check on Tifa's condition and much to his relief, she was still alive and seemed to be happy to see him. Their reunion, however, was cut short when Cloud realised that Sephiroth was still alive. Sephiroth managed to stab Cloud with a sword then proceed to run way with Jenova's head.

A couple of hours later, Hojo came to the Mako reactor to clean up the mess that Sephiroth has created. When he found out that Cloud was the one who managed to hurt Sephiroth, however, he asked his underlings to take Cloud to the basement of Shinra's mansion. This is where Cloud ended up being experimented by the crazy scientist and the reason why he and Zack are on the run in this OVA. Back to the present, Zeng orders all of the Turks to gather on the spot, informing them that Zack and Cloud have now been spotted hitchhiking a truck. True enough, Zack is seen happily talking to Cloud about the kind of jobs they will get once they reach Midgar. When Zack realises that a sniper tries to shoot Cloud, however, he ends up protecting his friend with his own body, effectively ending this story.

Impression:

The OVA doesn't actually tell any new story. It simply gives new perspectives to the incidents that took place inside the game. The OVA, for example, depicts the Turks as a group of people who are quite conflicted about the unethical jobs that they must conduct but decide to do them anyway because they got paid for it. Moving on to another matter, I find that personality-wise, Zack is a far more interesting character than Cloud. I was also quite surprised to know that he was as good as Cloud in the battle. It made me wonder how different the story would have been if he's actually the main character. While I realised that this would never happened, I kind of wished that this OVA had focused a bit more on his life prior to the event in Nibel.

Yeah. It would be interesting if Zack was the main character of FFVII because he seems go happy-go lucky to me compared to Cloud, whom I like even if he was a moody character. Even though Last Order was style over substance, it was GOOD style and that, atleast, I could like. Overall, personally, I liked Final Fantasy VII: Last Order just for showing another perspective of the "hidden scene" in the game.

Well I just finished watching both this and Advent Children and I must say I was astounded by the amount of detail and all those awesome visuals but as you said Garten, I felt it was lacking as for a story... It's a pity :( But still I enjoyed both.

Off I go for Hachikuro 21 ^_^

True it may *feel* style over substance, but that's only because we're all comparing it to the original game. The original FF7 game packs some 60 hours of gameplay storyline, while the Advent Children movie has only about 2 hours, and the OVA even less. It's only natural for all FF7 fans to feel the sudden lack of content.

Try thinking in the perspective of limiting a really wonderful 60+ hours story to just 2 hours, it's really quite unthinkable. I think Advent Children is already a really really amazing work for what it is, please give the makers the credit and praise that they deserve so much.

And I wish that Advent Children had been this.

http://db.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/file/final_fantasy_vii_plot.txt

I read the entire plot analysis from beginning to end. Very good documentation of the FFVII story. I learned a few new things, and remembered many things once forgotten.

I love Tifa, and I loved her even more in this, even though she gave Zack no credit but went all googly eyed over Cloud.

I about fell of my seat at the very end and I wish there was more to this story.
I'm slightly confused, is this OAV part of the "story", I mean if this is part of the story, is it part of the game? (I haven't played the game in ages and even then I never finished it... I know shoot me)

Overall I loved it and I wish there was more, I still haven't seen Advent Children, but I'm waiting for it to come out!

I didn't think of it as style over substance, mainly because I felt that it was meant for those who played and love the game, who'd gone down to the Shinra Mansion basement to get that tidbit of story. We all knew what would happen, but the beautiful animation was there to make us all happy and nostalgic. Kind of like when Chrono Trigger hopped onto Playstation.

I totally jizzed when THAT happened.

October 10, 2005 | Apobiosis wrote:

No way, Jenova is the true enemy.

She attacked the planet and destroyed most of the cetra.
Mako energy was discovered around the time that jenova was also. Mako energy slowly weakens the planet, something that jenova would want right? Jenova cells are also injected into all of SOLDIER, jenova's own elite army. Whenever Cloud freaks out and loses control, he characteristically grabs his head and shakes. When Sephiroth finds jenova and realizes the truth, he also grabs his head and shakes...

Oh yeah, and i haven't seen FF7AC, so unless hojo returns somehow, i'm pretty sure cloud kills him atop Sister Ray...

October 10, 2005 | Soulja wrote:

I enjoyed FF7AC very much. It was obviously crafted with much care and love for the fans of the game. The visuals were just eye-popping, the music was just awesome (Nobuo Uematsu continues to amaze me - the Divinity I and II, Jenova, and One-Winged Angel themes blew me away), and Tetsuya Nomura's character designs are slick as ever. The story may have felt a bit rushed, but try condensing a 30-60+ hour game (depending on hard you try to get the side quests and secrets) into a less-than-two-hour movie. It juggled the characters fairly well (and there were a lot of them, it was great and nostalgic seeing them all again, like old friends or family) and the creators did a good job balancing them all, which isn't too easy to do.

As for Last Order, it does bring a new perspective to the events surrounding the destruction of Nibelheim and Zack and Cloud's escape from Shinra, though I'm not sure all of it was good since it conflicts with gospel (from the game) in places. The most glaring conflict (if I recall correctly) is that Tifa awakens and sees Cloud has returned to save her though she says she never actually saw him during that incident (though I suppose she may have blocked it out of her mind after suffering the trauma of losing her father and village).

Another difference is how Zack met his end; there was no mention of a sniper's bullet in the game, I believe (though again, when it cuts to black and Zack tells Cloud to run, I assmue the Shinra soldiers finished Zack off as in the game after the sniper's bullet slowed him down - I'll admit that this seems a more fitting and heroic end for Zack than just being machine gunned down off screen, seeing how he can dodge bullets in the OVA).

Finally, when Cloud is skewered by Sephiroth's Masamune, he doesn't actually hurl the villain down into the depths of the Mako reactor. Rather, in the OVA, Sephiroth jumps in voluntarily with Jenova's head. This bothered me since a big part of Cloud's stature as a hero in the game is that he is the only one to have defeated Sephiroth (circumstances notwithstanding) and that Sephiroth subsequently hates Cloud all the more and manipulates him throughout the game because of it; Cloud, a lowly trooper, a nobody, defeating the greatest member of Soldier who ever lived. By having Sephiroth jump in on his own volition brings Cloud down a peg as a hero and it seems to indicate that the villain was planning the whole Meteor scheme before he freed Jenova from her/its prison (in the OVA, he tells his "mother" he has a plan) though I'm more inclined to think that Sephiroth hatched his scheme while traveling through the Lifestream and absorbing all the memories therein, not before when he was driven insane by the realization he wasn't entirely human.

Anyway, just some things that stuck with me. Last Order does feel a bit disjointed with its present and flashback style of storytelling, and it ended too abruptly for my tastes (but seeing how it was Zack's death scene, it does make sense). It left you wanting more. The animation was very good, and Zack is a pretty likeable character, a nice contrast to Cloud's moody and tortured mindset. I assume they became friends because Cloud looked up to Zack (Zack IS the person Cloud always wanted to be, after all), and Zack looked out for Cloud as a big brother would. For some reason, I didn't like Tifa's voice actress at all; she sounded way too mellow and unenthused when her character should be scared, angry, and generally freaked out and full of emotion. Sephiroth was aptly unhinged and creepy (the guy's got a major Oedipal complex, after all). Tseng seemed more conflicted than I remember him as; though I guess it did fit him since in the game he was loathe to harm Aeris presumably because he himself seemed infatuated with her (guess there is honor among villains). Cloud isn't given much room to do anything given the constraints of the storyline here; he showed some backbone in the end by standing up to Sephy, as required.

The introduction of the Before Crisis characters don't really add much to the story either, though I wonder whether or not Verudo Veld (the leader of the Turks before Tseng assumed control) will play a role in the upcoming Dirge of Cerberus game. Veld is never mentioned in the original FF7 or Advent Children, and he seems to be the correct age (late 40s or early 50s) to have been around to meet Vincent Valentine before he was betrayed by Hojo and sealed up underneath Nibelheim Mansion; both being the first generation of Turks, I really hope they explore that part of Vincent's past. I mean, both characters have V.V. as their initials - coincidence? Perhaps they were the best of friends, or even brothers or half-brothers, and had a falling out, who knows? Though that would be interesting. Here's to waiting for DoC.

*sigh* I feel very content right now. Last Order was really amazing, although I agree with everyone that there should have been more in the OVA and in Advent Children. Don't get me wrong though. I am a die hard fan girl with an obsession for a certain black spikey haired soldier and loved every second of LO. I wished that they had dug a little deeper and gave us more of Zack's past. I do love his cocky, happy go lucky attitude though. It is very fitting for him and I like how Cloud adapts the same cockiness in the early parts of the game. I was very happy to see that a lot of Cloud's early personality in thr game came from Zack. The way he was fighting, his clothes, his sword twirling move.

I noticed that Mia commented on wondering why Zack cared for Cloud so much. I think many of us have asked that. Cloud, we come to understand through the game and AC is a ery antisocial individual that is frustrated that he is unable to be the person he wants to be. He runs off to join SOLDIER to achieve that. When I think about a naive sixteen year old boy in some sort of super boot camp, it makes me think he had a rude awakening to his existence. Then somewhere along the way he meets this guy who is easy going and carefree. It goes without saying that Cloud, like all many young SOLDIER wannabes, admires Sephiroth and wants to be like him, but Zack is more real and on some level is nore desirable to mimic. Even in the game Cloud talks about how much he wanted to be like Zack. I think that they were probably aquaintences on some level up until the Nieblheim incident, although I would like to think that they were more. Being stuck in matching gren tubes and getting poked and prodded by the gods know what for five years probably brought they closer. Hell, if i was being tortured for five years, i'd make friends with my fellow guinea pigs. Everything else is really speculation and I think that it has been kept that way for so long because it adds more. All we know is that they were best friends, we can only imagine what that means.

Moving on, I agree with Souja about the diffences in the game. I think that Cloud's role in defeating Sephiroth lessend him in being the great hero that he gets credit for in the game.

Also you guys should check out the Conflicts of Interest story Atharva Veda posted a link for. I read it years ago and could never find my way back to the story. Here is the link again. Conflicts of Interest It gives a deeper look on why Cloud acts like Zack through out most of the game. Crazy scientist runnin' amuck, what more could we want.

I am very excited about Dirge of Cerberus and Crisis Core. I think i'm going to die from waiting so long!

As said before, the scene where Sephiroth stabs Cloud is really off. It makes Cloud seem stronger than he is, and it makes it look like Sephiroth retreats and plans on going into the lifestream.

Anyways, this is a little off topic, but has anyone played Before Crisis? It's that cellphone game that was only for a certain cellphone in japan.

**Spoiler warning**
The message below contain spoiler for "Final Fantasy vii" & "Monster"

If any of you have watched Monster before, you will start to realized that Johan Liebert is somehow highly simliar to Sephiroth.

-In FFvii, there is this Shinra mansion while in Monster, there is red rose mansion.

-Johan went to the red rose mansion and found a painting of his mother. Johan returned to his mother, which is the painting and he burned down the mansion.

Sephiroth on the other hand, went to the mansion and discovered certain truth about himself. He burned the whole town and went to a nearby mountain where his mother is there.

-Both Johan and Sephiroth have plans to go to the promised land. Johan could see the nameless land while Sephiroth is searching for the promised land.

Both of them say that they have a good plans.

-Both of them look for their mother.

-Johan look for the person involved with the seperation of him and his mother.
While Sephirioth look for humanlity for the seperation with him and his mother.

After watching Final fantasy Vii : last order and Advent Children, it strike onto me that Monster could have taken some of the plot / ideas from there as I see certain similarities between them. Also...
Both of them are famous villians.

But it seems that the Turks are more the focus of Last Order. Also an anime within the FF7 world would cool no matter who the main character is, as long as it's not Dino owner of Gold Saucer!

BTW you can watch Last Order at http://www.youtube.com

Damn you Zafran! I was happily reading everyone’s comments up to the point when I suddenly I find myself having to hit the breaks because of this guy. Why do people give away the story … even if it’s not true.

I haven't watched it yet, why go spill the beans. To add to what has not just been said; I sure hope all you freeloaders are planning on purchasing Last Order when the hit the stores, we all know internet piracy is wrong. I've got my legal copy, have YOU!

If I remember correctly, Last Order isn't and might not ever be released in the US. Last Order was an extra feature on a 'Special Addition' version of Advent Children.

Well I thought ff7 last order was amazing. The anime was perfect, and it really did open up to the game a little better. It put a spotlight on the Soldier zack,no doubt. Those who haven't seen it go to www.youtube.com and type final fantasy last order on the search bar. They put the movie right there for you to watch for FREE!

Well personally I loved this movie because Zack was always my character after all he saves the man who saves the world. And I was just glad to see him get his 15 minutes and I believe there is going to be a game for the PSP that Zack is going to be the main character in......I can't wait.

FF7 the game beats this fanboi movie. Nice anime, but when you mess with important parts like Cloud defeating Sephiroth and start adding your own ideas, everything up to it is ruined. Stick to the orginal story, it is very good and does not need modification. If you do not understand it, play the game a few more times and do all the optional quest.

Last Order was just an addition to AC, although there are many changes in LO on the original game, try to think it this way, if a painter made a perfect painting...would this painter want to change or improve his painting after seeing it for a long time(perfectionist)...I beleive that there are many things that is needed to be corrected to FF7 game althought I also believe that even with no corrections it is still the best...The corrections only make the story more deep, better and more realistic, for me it is better that Sephiroth jumped instaed of Cloud defeating him, because Cloud is not that a great of a fighter at that time(he's just an ordinary shin-ra military guy) while sephiroth is a 1st class soldier at that time, it is a time where Cloud finally realised his potential of being a powerful hero and as for Zack, on Crisis Core, Zack is really more powerful than the original game and LO, they made justice on a 1st class soldier...and how tragic his end..the only FF that has a character who died at the end(If I'm not mistaken)so sweet and tragic hehehe...well the only FF7 that I don't have right now is Before Crisis so anyone from Japan, finish the game and make a review or a dialog script for us in the other parts of the world...share the knowledge that you have to FFfans as well OK..TY and godbless
