As far as last episode goes, this is definitely a good conclusion to the series. The animation is a sight to behold and the story ends on a solemn and bittersweet note. Overall, however, the series has been rather disappointing in both pacing and story development. The series spent too much time repeating information about the grail over the course of the series to the detriment of the pacing. This also means that the writers lost the chance to give the character some background information so that their own story are a lot easier to understand. If a person has not seen the game or at least read some spoilers about it, the likelihood is that he/she won't understand some of the unexplained storylines featured in the series. This includes Archer's background, Rin/Sakura connection, and Illya getting sick all of a sudden.

The episode begins with Shirou being surrounded by a bunch of living dead inside the Angra Mainyu. The dead seems to want him to join them in the afterlife and do their best to pull him into their world. However, when Shirou remembers his promise to his father, Rin and Saber, he manages to break free of their hold and destroys the mud that envelops his body. He then pulls out the Azoth knife and runs towards Kotomine. Before he manages to reach the guy, however, Kotomine has sent another batch of black mud to envelop Shirou. Outside the temple, Enuma Elish clashes with Excalibur and Saber loses again as usual although she doesn't seem to get injured that badly this time around. Meanwhile, Shirou is back where he started, trying to free his body from the living dead. At the same time, Saber is in danger because Gilgamesh has summoned Enuma Elish again and she barely has the energy to stand up, let alone counter the attack.
Before Enuma Elish can strike her, however, Saber sees a bright light in the distance. Similarly, Shirou manages to see the same light from inside Angra Mainyu. Saber then starts saying "You are my...." while Shirou starts using his trace power to create Avalon. Saber can now be heard saying "You were my sheath, right?" All of a sudden a bright light shines on top of Shirou's body. Shirou and Saber then extends their hand to reach the sheath at the same time, causing it to glow. Saber's mana is instantly replenished while Shirou is freed from the living dead. As a result, Shirou manages to destroy Angra Mainyu once again while Saber manages to deflect Enuma Elish using her sword. The reflected attack distracts Gilgamesh, allowing Saber to run towards the other Servant and charge up her sword. Similarly, Shirou dodges the black mud while pulling out Azoth. Saber then charges Excalibur and manages to strike Gilgamesh using her sword before he can unleash Enuma Elish.
At the same time, Shirou manages to avoid the last mud sent by Kotomine and proceeds to stab the guy using the Azoth knife. In order to make sure that the knife works well, Shirou punches it further deep into Kotomine's body. At the same time, Gilgamesh is dying and talks about Avalon, the utopia that comes after a King's death. He realises that it's also the most powerful defence and Saber's true Noble Phantasm, one that has been revered as legend. Gilgamesh then reaches out for Saber's cheek and calls her a woman full of hate, one who opposses him right to the end. Having said that, he forgives her because he believes that nothing is more beautiful than the things that you can't get your hands on. He then disappears in sparks after telling Saber that he had fun. Meanwhile, Kotomine looks on in shocked and asks Shirou how he comes into the possession of Azoth knife. Shirou explains that the knife does not belong to him but to Rin.
Kotomine laughs at the irony of it all because he was the one who gave her the knife to Rin 10 years ago. He then gasps in pain before turning into a mud. After Kotomine disappears, Illya falls from her confinement so Shirou summons a blanket and catches the loli in his arms. Saber quickly joins the guy before he can engage in his lolicon fantasy. She then walks towards the grail, ready to destroy it but she can't do it without his last command spell. She also tells Shirou that she wishes to hear his voice. Shirou becomes conflicted upon hearing this and his internal mind begins to process his decision. Shirou admits that he loves Saber and wants her to become happy more than anyone else. He wishes that they can continue being together. However, he also realises that if he really loves her, he wouldn't wish that on her. Even when she was injured, Saber continued to fight. Shirou believes that this is the Saber that he loved.
Shirou also feels that he can't dishonour her only pride and because of this, he tells her to destroy the Grail. Saber immediately charge up her sword and then unleashes its power onto the Grail, effectively destroying it. With the Grail destroyed, the power that allows Saber to materialise in this world also disappears. This means she can no longer stay in the world. As Shirou's last command spell disappears, Saber tells him that everything is over now. She is glad that she became his sword and succeeded in protecting him. She then tells Shirou that she loves him before disappearing as the sun rises. Fast forward to what is possibly a few days later, Shirou is awakened by Sakura who has prepared breakfast for him. All of a sudden, they hear a scream and a loud noise. As it turns out, it's just Fujimura-sensei and Illya riding a motorbike inside the house. The two then drive the bike towards Shirou much to his shock. In the aftermath, Fujimura-sensei apologises to Shirou and praises his ability to stop the bike with his hands.
Despite the lively manner of both Fujimura-sensei and Illya, Shirou looks a bit sad. On the way to school, Shirou meets Rin who tells him that she thought he'll look more depressed so Shirou asks her if she'll cheer him up if that's the case. But unfortunately Rin tells him that she will kick him instead. Shirou tells Rin that maybe one day he'll forget about Saber's voice and personality. However, he thinks he'll always remember being in love with her. Shirou then runs the other way after telling Rin to go ahead. However, he thinks he'll always remember being in love with her. Shirou then runs the other way after telling Rin to go ahead. Meanwhile, Saber has returned to the time when she was wounded in the battlefield. Saber tells her loyal knight, Sir Bedivere that she saw a dream and because she doesn't dream often, she feels it's a precious experience. Bedivere thinks that if Saber rests and closes her eyes once more, she can see the dream again.
Saber wonders if she'll see the same dream if she closes her eyes again. With sadness, Bedivere tells Saber that as long as her wish is strong enough, he believes this to be true. Because of this, Saber asks Bedivere to take her sword and throw it into the deep lake. At the same time in Shirou's world, everyone are doing their things when all of a sudden a strong wind blows over them. Shirou thinks that even though it feels so close, he can't reach out for it. However, even if it's unreachable, certain things will remain in one's heart, that of being at the same time and looking at the same thing. As long as they remember these feelings, no matter how apart they are, he believes that they are together. If one continues to run and aim at the distance, one day that person will be able to reach his/her wish. At the same time, Saber tells her loyal knight that her next sleep will be a bit longer. After Saber closes her eyes, Bedivere ask Saber if she sees the continuation of her dream.
Impression:
The last few minutes of this episode featured some of the stronger writing this series has ever seen. As a result, the last episode felt emotionally charged and powerful for me. While I don't like Saber and Shirou's pairing, I can understand their desire to be together and the way life seems to decide otherwise. I really wish I can be more excited about the ending but all I can say is that it's a good ending that is both solemn and bittersweet. I do think that while the ending is good, the rest of the series hasn't been as enjoyable. I started liking Fate/stay night simply based on the characters. I knew that there was a lot of interesting conflict and stories to be drawn from each of them. Unfortunately this never fully materialised. The writers put too much emphasis on the Holy War itself even though the characters' stories are far more interesting to explore. The only characters who benefit from some development were Shirou and to an extent, Saber.
However, this means that the rest of the characters's stories were not fully told. It feels as if you have to dig down into the spoiler archive in order to find out their background information. For example, not many people know that Rin and Sakura are sisters. And it's hard to blame them because the anime writers had written their story haphazardly as if it's a last second addition to everything else in that part of the story. I also think that Studio Deen's decision to use mostly Fate scenario with a slight modification to the story to include Sakura was an unfortunate one. Of all the scenarios, Fate is bittersweet towards the end but overall it's not as interesting as Unlimited Blade Works or as tragic as Heaven's Feel. The story also lacks a sense of urgency even as Shirou and Saber are about to face their main adversaries. It felt as if Gilgamesh and Kotomine were just another set of enemy to be defeated.
On the positive side, the series is blessed with a good-looking character design and usually consistent animation. I did notice that Studio Deen often reused some shots but that didn't bother me as much if it means that the series does not look badly drawn. The soundtrack is a bit of hit and miss. I personally am not a big fan of Tainaka Sachi's music. However, Jyukai has provided two of the best songs I've had the pleasure to hear: Anata ga ita Mori and Hikari. The background music used for the series is also equally good. I noticed that the series used some pleasant operatic music towards the last few episodes. The slightly skewed Arthurian legend is an interesting topic on its own but I'm too tired to talk about it right now. Suffice to say, I was amused when I saw the old illustration of Sir Bedivere features him with beard and is far away from the Bishounen/female version in this series. I also noticed that Shirou started to pick up Rin's rebellious attitude, possibly foreshadowing his transformation into Archer.

Special ED
「君との明日」- Kimi to no Ashita by Tainaka Sachi (25.9MB for PSP/Quicktime)
This is a rather nice ending theme for the series. Having said that, I personally prefer the opera music that was used during Saber's death and Hikari by Jyukai.
Gilgamesh somehow becomes a positive & memorable character before disappearing...
I'm glad to see it end quite well but I was hoping that there'll be some kind of future revelation or something.
I feel sorry for Shirou since he seems to really like Saber. But what I don't understand is why he didn't remember her after he became Archer (he only remember Rin, and himself as Shirou)?
He does remember her. After all he's the one who told Rin that he doesn't want Saber to continue being a Servant.
It just happens that he grew up and moved on. The passage of time does that to you. You remember memories, but you don't cling on to the past.
Why is END banner in spanish? (FIN). Or... well, I think is a spanish word, but maybe is italian or portuguese or... It isn't japanese nor english, isn't it?
"Fin" is usually just a generally accepted term, equivalent to "The End" in most situations. I believe it comes from French or some other Romance language.
That aside, I think this episodes ties up the anime nicely and may incourage more people to play the game to find out about the unresolved issues, which are mostly hinted at and never stated explicitly. I think many of these had to be cut back in order to allow for time. Maybe if Fate Hollow Ataraxia is animated some of these issues will be explained further.
What a big fudging waste of time. What have we learned from Fate that wasn't already taught when TYPE-MOON funded Tsukihime?
Well, the first bit is that Studio Deen is willing to mislead fans to maintain viewer attendance. If they had the guts to put a Shirou v. Archer sequence in the opening, they *must* have realized FSN was going to dive in popularity after killing Archer off. I guess that's also the reason Archer appeared in episodes 15-22, even though he's supposed to be gone.
Also, while this episode might have looked really nice, a great portion of the series didn't, or relied on stock footage. It seems apparent that FSN was a medium-budget series that was over hyped to be something much larger than it was; this series is either too faithful (lifting confusing lines directly from the game) or not faithful enough.
Overall, FSN is a huge disappointment, and I don't think it's even worth watching once, let alone a second time. Geneon really shot itself in the foot by licensing this series before it even aired; they probably won't recuperate any financial investment for FSN after it suffers a year's worth of bad publicity. Fail.
Oh well...can't say I wasn't dissapointed since I really have a huge expectation for this anime, though to be fair, it's definitely one of the better series.
So does this mean every single Arthurian figures in this series is female? Quite a nice twist I say. Now I want to see a female Lancelot.
I am one of these people that does not understand what is in Archer's background, Rin/Sakura connection, and Illya's illness. Can somebody help me?
That was a nice ending. I think I'll actually miss Gilgamesh like I missed Archer after he left. Haha, I feel sorry for Shirou also, for having to let Saber go, since I felt like maybe they actually had something between them. It really is a bittersweet ending like you said, Garten.
Bedivere is just a handsome guy with the same hairstyle as Saber. Mordred wasn't in the game, and in my opinion what was shown of him wasn't his real face. It was probably just symbolic for Saber killing a part of herself.
Marco, Archer is Shirou. Rin and Sakura are sisters. And Ilya was getting sick because her body was being used as the vessel to hold the souls of all the defeated servants, so the grail was being born in her body.
>>What have we learned from Fate that wasn't already taught when TYPE-MOON funded Tsukihime?>>
This is a show to entertain people, if you want to learn something, watch Sesame Street.
As far as I can discern, that 'opera music' is an original composition which borrowed many ideas from Cesar Franck's Prelude and Samuel Barber's Adagio for the Strings.
>This is a show to entertain people, if you want to learn something, watch Sesame Street.
It was about as entertaining as being nailed to a cross. My interest in FSN was sparked by a complex, detailed story coupled with appealing character designs and atmosphere, not the cheap, lowbrow marketing ploy Deen has been spoon-feeding us since January.
Tsukihime was remembered for being a big disappointment; come a year's time, FSN will simply be forgotten.
i enjoyed FSN alot but i havent played the game. I think calling this anime bad or dissapointing is along the same lines of calling the Harry Potter movies bad. To those that havent read the Harry Potter books the movies are great but to those loyal to the books it isnt that great(this is true with almost every movie to book adaptation.) The same can be said about the the FSN series those who watched the anime but didnt play the game where proably more or less pleased with the series but for those that did play the game they might feel dissapointed with it. {note this isnt a comment directly towards garten just to those that are bashing the series because they liked the game alot}
zomg, that's quite a way to kill Mr. Goldie...
They used Avalorn, Excalibur and Caliburn on him on the last episodes, but they hardly damaged him...
And then, Saber slashes him in the chest and he dies
LOL
gilgamesh looks hot when he's dying lol
>>gilgamesh looks hot when he's dying lol
Saber looks even hotter with her hair down. Personally, I enjoyed FSN a lot. I can see where the expectations of certain fans were not met; but I can also understand that they wanted to follow a somewhat different direction and I can respect that.
Overall, its still one of my favorite anime series.
Yup. Definitely the 'Fate' ending... which leaves things quite ambiguous, although Shirou is confident that, with the Grail gone, no other people will take it up the shorts the way he did as a kid.
Well, that's his hope anyways. Rin and Sakura are free from any competition for Shirou's affections, even if his mind's with Saber - who finishes her life in the past... and with Ilya and Fuji-nee making his life just that much more exciting (read: loud).
Still... I had read they were going for a more original ending than one of the game paths... and in the very end, it's the Fate ending - and it was one of the weaker stories in the visual novel, which makes it that much more disappointing. Still... at least the series didn't exactly end with a whimper - a letdown, but not a pathetic whimper.
Shirou's true love is his ideals
which why he let Saber go
he understood the importance of ideals, and how that meant to her
BGF, sorry but I didn't underestand. Archer is Shirou? How is this possible?
I figured out some relationship between Rin and Sakura, but It seems there is a long story about them.
I guess this is a rather shocking revelation for you, after 24 episodes... You did a great job by keeping yourself unspoiled xDDD
Servants aren't neccesarily heroes from the past. They are Heroic Spirits, guardians of humanity that exist out of time.
Archer is a Heroic Spirit from the future. He's a POSSIBLE future version of Emiya Shirou. Few details are known about his life, other than it was very tragic.
A Magus can get a specific Servant by using a relic/artifact that's related to him as a focus in his summoning.
Rin unknowingly used her pendant - the same pendant she saved Shirou with. That's why the Servant she summoned could be no other than Archer.
The Heroic Spirit Emiya Shirou, a warrior with the ability of forging weapons with his own will... the man which hasn't revealed his true identity in any moment, "Archer".
I'm with Sacul555 on this one. I certainly haven't seen or heard about the game and I found anime very entertaining and intriguing. From this blog I have learned about some spoilers while watching but honestly, knowing shirou=archer does not make any difference in the anime, to me at least. In fact I'm even questioning that's true at all (I'm sure it is true in the game, but this is a separate product). Far less useful info than, say, learning they use sex as a mean to replenish mana, which actually helps explain some scenes in the anime which are otherwise baffling, or who was Sakura's brother (I only now read that Tosaka is her sister, eh, what, say again?). Lots of mysteries are left unexplained, but such is the case with computer games anyway, unless you finish every subquest (or replay to get every ending). That's a part of their charm. Here, writers focused on certain characters and certain plot elements, and I think they created an engaging story.
Also, the music was quite good, much better than in most animes. I really don't see what compaining is all about - I certainly liked songs more than Ouran Host Club ones
(which is an anime that is in my opinion overrated on all accounts except for the character and art design).
Having not played the game, I think FSN is a very good anime. Not fantastic, and certainly not one of my favourites, but very far from a bad show.
I can certainly see how a fan of the game would dislike it, it goes that way with any game/book conversion, they always do SOMETHING wrong.
They can't very well be expected to animate all three (?) stories in one anime, so we get a version of one with bits of the others thrown in. I think it worked pretty well, even if the series was slow to start. It certainly had a good ending, which is rare among anime. TV in general really.
Andrew, Archer=Shirou even in the anime. His type of sorcery is unique to him as it's an effect of his reality marble, which in turn is a reflection of his soul.
It just occured to me that the bit with the Vespa was reminiscent of FLCL, perhaps intentionally so (It is in fact a vespa, I looked it up).
It also sounded to me like Bedivere sounded like Aya Hisakawa, I can't read Japanese well enough to understand the credits but it certainly sounded like her.
This ending almost like that AVG game, I just think why do not they let 3 stroy lines get toghter? Maybe more wonderful.
"Parting is all we know of heaven and all we need to know of hell." -Emily Dickinson
I love these kinds of endings the best, bittersweet and leaving your soul slightly scarred
This episode was full of powerful partings, some more moving than others.
It must be a perequisite to be able to exit in a touching way to earn the class of Archer, because Gilgamesh's exit totally redeemed him as a character in my eyes. Sure he was sub-par as a convincing villain, sure he grated on the nerves. His last line made up for all that and then some.
Kotomine... i wish there had been a little bit more backstory between him and Rin, and just backstory on him in general to make his exit more powerful, but he remained an undevelopped villain to the end... if only they had put as much effort developping him as they had caster.
Saber and Shirou's parting shot tinglies down my back, and her death was in a way, the sweetest way any anime had lulled a character into eternal slumber. Note about the mythology, wasn't Arthur taken into Avalon where he rested as "The once and future king"? Who was Bedivere!? It wasn't even Gawain or some more recognizable knight.
My bad, been out of touch of Arthurian legends, found some info on Bedivere for anyone who wants to know
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bedivere
I see repeated references to the game. Is that the primary source for this anime? Is it available in English or only in Japanese?
It's only in Japanese at the moment, although there's a translation project in progress. And yes, the game's the primary source for the anime.
Also... is it just me, or is part of the reason why Taiga-nee took Ilya in is to keep Shirou from having to deal with either siscon temptation, or just to keep Ilya out of his futon at night - and thus keep Sakura from going Kaede on them both, removing the breakfast-maker from her own life? :D
Nah, unlikely. Even if Sakura wasn't around, she'd make Shirou make breakfast for her xD
I really enjoyed this episode. I thought Fate/stay Night was going to be another great dissapointment just like Tsukihime was. For me, FSN has a LOT more potential than Tsukihime, but the writers decided to make episodes full of nothing, without moving forward into the characters, because if they have shown some background, this anime would have been greater.
FSN is dissapointing in the way Garten exposes; the final episode is a great one, but the series lack character's background and the pace is really slooooww. Even though, is not as bad as Tsukihime, it's far better.
Only one thing, Fate/hollow Ataraxia starts right after the end of FSN? What's the story of FHA?
To me, this series was disappointing (since roughly the middle of the series) and I didn't play the game at all. There were great moments indeed like the final and 14. episode but the story in general was way too simple without any deeper meanings to all the characters expect the main characters - enemies come and go like they were nothing, all what it was about was to defeat them and progressing the relationship between Shirou and Saber. I'd like to see more of the other characters. I've read about the other two scenarios from the game and they're far more interessing than this one. (...and the replenishing mana with sex is illogical..well, a h-game indeed...-_-")
One of the reasons I started watching this was the neat animation,(which has its ups and downs) and the soundtrack is one of the greatest I know with the two superb ending songs Anata ga ita Mori and Hikari. Rewatching this would be a waste of time - at least not in a long time. But it sure managed to keep me watching untill the end.
I thought they did fairly well on the issues that you thought they didn't shed enough light on. It was pretty clear that Rin and Sakura were sisters in the scenes when Rin went to rescue Sakura and flashed back to their childhood. Likewise I thought they gave a decent amount of hints to Shirou being Archer with him imaging those blades and wield them like Archer. I do think the Ilya sickness was rushed and was not explained adequately, she just suddenly appeared as sick later in the show.
I disagree on the music but this is just preference, I loved the Archer death special ED the most out of music, but I actually prefer the last ED to the ones by Jyukai, again, just music taste differs =)
Overall it was a pretty nice anime, some of the fighting felt stupid as is usual for me in these type of themes but it was necessary to facilitate the story. =) Being an H-game, I didn't really think it would be all that deep a story so I had a more reasonable expectation than some folks here, it seems =)
Somebody, I really stayed out of spoilers. Well It was a great revelation at all, but I still think that, how can I say, it's quite strange.
The story should have given more indications about this.
Overall i'm dissapointed in the Archer=Shirou thing. If someone didn't spell this all out, how the hell would someone who's never seen the game KNOW? It was a good series, but that part just...failed it.
I think that you should add Fate/Stay Night to the Completed Anime Series list now .
(Another Great Anime Ended)
just wondering, have any other h-games been translated into english? like tsukihime, air, kanon, etc.
anyway, i liked this last episode just because i don't think there are enough bittersweet endings. but overall, not a very good series. i dunno if i'd watch this again.
I like the form a lot that Garten approaches a history. I would like to place my complete opinion on FSN, but I didn't still attend the last chapter (I am download), and my English doesn't help hehe
As I said in my other comments (chapter 22 and 23), the end was evident.
I enjoy a show (Soap opera, film, anime), beginning for the ear, and FSN created music like Anata ga ita Mori, that entered for my collection of one of the best. With your letter and perfect melody (showing the potential of musical creativity), I already knew as the series would finish from the first episode.
I Never imagined that would cry in my 26 years as a baby hehehe (in spite of FSN not to have deepened the relationships among the characters, I imagined that would be like this in the beginning -_ - " and as it would be the last chapters). Series as love-hina, Blue Glender, My-Hime, Saikano with some films.
I also liked the music Disillusion of Tainaka Sachi. Dsillusion was a music full of mystery and honors, it placed FSN in a perfect climate. However, I didn't like the instrumental part of the music, it could have been better.
On the background of the persoangens, I was disappointed. Gilgamesh was just one more opponent without any value. As I said in other comments, Archer vs Saberr would be the ideal in my opinion (it was that I waited)... It would be a fight full of feelings, history (as for instance the true reason of the soul of Shirou not to have rested in peace and to have sought for the power of the saint grail), and a lot of revelations.
As all know, it was not well placed the true reason of Archer/Shirou. And the saint grail selects the heroic souls of the past or present and your masters. however, as much the master as the servant want the saint grail.
Other relationships as the servant Caster and Kazuki was not also well explained. I will try to be more objective. When I began to see the background of Caster, I noticed some likeness with Saber. With a great grief in your heart and love lack, she also loved your " master ", However he didn't demonstrate the same.
Then because one considered teacher would become a "machine of killing" ? And even if he roots a psychopath, he saved Caster of the death and it solved you help her. With the whole certainty, he also loved her.
Other backgrounds like Rin/sakura, Rin/Kotomine, Archer/Rin, Archer/Saber, Rin/sakura/Shinji [since Sakura and Rin are sisters, I believe that she is also sister of him (but the Shinji asked for Rin in courtship oO"... more background exists)].
Now I understand because Saber always said for Shirou " one day you will be sorry for placing your ideals in first place, in other words, in front of your own good ". Saber always said that in the series, and in my opinion she already knew that in the end he would destroy the saint grail.
I read in the summary and in the comments that Saber asks for Shirou to use your last command order for her to destroy the saint grail. That proof that Saber really loved Shirou and she wanted to be on that time, because she would not destroy the saint grail for own desire.
It was very well placed above in a comment: " Shirou loves your ideals more than everything ". I really hated that part, not only because Saber died, but for her to have died for choice from somebody that loved "her". Sincerely in my opinion that was Horrible... Saber placed Shirou above all, and him not. A question:
Would leave who the loved person to die for honor? Try to imagine that... (impossible)
For more beautiful or honorable than it goes, they had already gotten to defeat all in the plot, he could have made Saberr to drink of the saint grail and later destroyed.
Well, I enjoyed FSN a lot and I am wanting to see that last chapter to give my last opinion on the series.
Quote funny duck :
Why is END banner in spanish? (FIN). Or... well, I think is a spanish word, but maybe is italian or portuguese or... It isn't japanese nor english, isn't it?
yup Funny duck,
FIM = portuguese, FIN = spanish , End = english. I dont remember in french...
(My native language is portuguese)... yup is a Romance language.
This series could have been better, 2 more episode and it would have been fully developed.
i actually like the series.
I see a lot of references to a book or something and the game...can anyone point me in these directions? LIke the name of the book or other references to tis anime that would help me understand it better and better appreciate it
=) i liked the series, but i wonder about all the relationships not revealed... as a person who didnt and wouldnt play the game, is there any other way i can find out the complete stories behind the spoilers?
i really think its interesting how Rin happens to summon archer... i forgot, but did archer ever reveal to Rin that he was Shirou?
"just wondering, have any other h-games been translated into english? like tsukihime, air, kanon, etc."
Heh... Tsukihime has been translated for quite a long while... we just haven't got our act together and made it releasable yet... We are pretty busy, although beta testing should be starting soon.
As one who played F/SN, I was still very pleased with the anime. It was a treat enough just to be able to see a lot of the scenes animated.
"I see a lot of references to a book or something and the game...can anyone point me in these directions? LIke the name of the book or other references to tis anime that would help me understand it better and better appreciate it"
The name of the game is the same (Fate/Stay Night). There are three different story arcs within the game (Fate, Unlimited Blade Works, and Heaven's Feel).
Just for the information, "fin" means end, in french :)
Well .. this is a japanese anime NOT an english one, so they can put their banners in the language they like.
And FIN it's a spanish word too not only french o.ó .. it sounds much more elegant, "The End" it's just too boring xD
I actually thought this was a good series, if not entirely rushed at the end. There needed to be more background to the characters, for example learning Caster is Medea and she lost her love all in the span of a minute and this indirectly i suppose causes her love for Kuzuki?
As for the Archer/Shirou relationship although they never fully tell you his true identity there are many subtle hints throughout the series.
1. At the end of episode 14 as his body is disappearing you see the rin's pendant left behind (the pendant she used when savings Shirou's life in episode 2)
2. The fact that whenever Archer talks to Shirou, he seems to know exactly what Shirou's thinking in terms of his ideals, what he believes is right, how he will fight the war, how to develop his powers, etc etc.
3. This one might have been extremely subtle but in episode 14 when fighting Ilya you notice how Archer says "you're still so merciless Ilya" (Only Shirou refered to her as Ilya rather than her full name)
4. Shirou imaging Archers weapons when fighting Kuzuki ? I mean come on that one was fairly obvious
Well I suppose if you didn't know the relationship it would be rather difficult to discern these subtleties from the anime, but I thought it was clever to hint to that relationship rather than to tell the viewer outright.
*Spoilers*
And for those of you who haven't played or read about the game, Archers "main" objective is to kill Shirou. About a year after the 5th holy grail war Ilya dies and it's one of Shirou's greatest regrets. Shirou ends up joining the protectors of justice and in a situation to save 100 of his comrades he appeals to the world for the miracle (makes a pact saying that when he dies he will become a heroic soul). He finds himself later in future battles needlessly killing innocent people in order to save others. Archer concludes that attempting to perserve all humanity is futile becauase the few must be sacrificed for the survival of the many. Accepting this is difficult because it betrays his life's conviction and renders his self dedication to mankind worthless.
Later on one of the 100 that Archer had saved uses Archer as a scapegoat for his warcrimes and executed. Bitter, broken and angry Archer graciously accepts his death hoping to be summoned in the fifth holy grail war and to kill Shirou hoping to spare Shirou the anguish of realize his ideals are a sham.
Most of it was taken from wikipedia.org so if you want to read up about all the other characters and such you can go there =)
"4. Shirou imaging Archers weapons when fighting Kuzuki ? I mean come on that one was fairly obvious"
i think thats wrong because Shirou only thought about Archers weapons because Archer was there in his current time.
What about Archer when he was in Shirou's time? there would be no Archer because in order for Archer to be there, there would have to be Shirou first...
Blink:
Well, that proves that Archer could not defeat Shirou. He died in the battle with Ilya, so there's no way Archer does not exist because he's Shirou and such weird stuff.
Well, this anime was interesting. Not as interesting as Tsukihime, but kind of. The only reason I watched this was, that it had such brilliant characters. I enjoyed more reading the background story and character spoilers than watching the anime. And I look forward to hold the F/SN game in my hands. Like in Tsukihime, F/SN is supposed to be a novel story. There is simply too much background and details that do not fit into a 26 ep. anime.
But I enjoyed the watch. Especially those episodes with Assassin. Why the heck are the coolest characters those with the less background story? I hoped that he would get a bigger part in the anime. Most because of his typical rônin-samurai thing and the way he looked like sephiroth. Geez, and the fights with Assassin are the most exciting ones in F/SN.
Okay guys. Now that I've completed the series, I'll have to print the wikipedia entries about F/SN and all this spoiler stuff. See ya next grail war.
What im trying to say is that Archer saved Shirou in from Berserker and this is what we saw.
BUT what about Archers Past when he was Shirou , there would not have been an Archer from the future to protect Archer(when he was Shirou) from Berserker.
they nevered showed dark sakura well sorta kinda they did but it wasnt enough i mean she was like a puppet and i wanted to see her white hair so badly and the outfit was horrible!!!!!!.and well they barely said anything about sakura how rider was her servant and how her bro.abused her and all.
but overall it was a preety good seriesahh it would have been so much better if the story was exactly right~.~
people are saying theres gonna be a second series about how acher was shirou and all
I didn't think so, "unknown". F/Sn will be a flop and I'm sure there won't be a sequel about Shirou/Archer.
And Blink:
What we are doing here is the 12 monkeys-discussion about your future self in the past. It's simply too weird and there are many different points of view. So stop brabbling and do something productive xD
I may not have played the game, but say they wanted to continue the storyline from the end point of the series, isn't there a way to make another Holy Grail war? I know from looking at the internet that there is alot of technical stuff that maybe could make it happen?
"BUT what about Archers Past when he was Shirou , there would not have been an Archer from the future to protect Archer(when he was Shirou) from Berserker."
have you seen the butterfly effect? growing up, the main character had blackouts when his future self came to change his past. basically, shirou has to grow up having his future there because his future had come to his past.. yeah its confusing
your comments about fate stay night, its true, the animation was well made, conclusion was good, but overrall...so story was ok, thinking they would be together like most stories would be but, it end with her dying in peace, never becoming a servant again. both living back to the way they used to from before, knowing they'll never see each other again (kinda sad) but because of that ending is why most people like it soo much =]. and the ending song was perfect, ive been trying to find the ending song forever!! =/ the artist is "Tainaka Sachi"!! haha... help!?!? =[
fate stay night is simply....the BEST!!~~
i constantly watch the ending, seeing her die peacfully, realizing she accepted what happened to her past, never becoming a servant, and shiro wont ever meet her either. thats what makes the ending so great and sad. and the song saying, them meeting was meant to happen from a long time ago. the ending couldnt get any better....
so...after watching it repeatedly, i heard theres a game for this??? =]
so......archer is shiro in the future...that's why his memory was a blurr??, i think archer found out that shiro was was him from the past, when hew as fighting berserker, how else could he have given him such good advise?

i havent played either, and i want too, but from the story, yes there will be another holy grail war in the future, every 10 years =/, but there wont be a saber as a servant =_[. or at least i dont think so.
wow, I had no idea that the story was actually so dark... replenishing mana by sex!? Sakura was rider's master? abused by her brother? this is better than soap opera!
I just finished watching this series, and I absolutely LOVED it. I still can't stop thinking about it. If there are more ppl out there who think the same way I do, then I would say NO, this series is NOT a flop.
I never read the CG novel, but I just read about it on Wiki... you can't expect to somehow cram 3 divergent storylines into a 26-epi anime without disrupting pace and character development. Even tho I do like the Archer vs Shirou, after reading about UBW in Wiki, I just don't see how it can be incorporated into Fate. Too much of it doesn't sync. For example, if Shirou does fight Archer and defeats him, then his internal conflicts about his ideals vs his attachment to Saber would be resolved prematurely, and most of his character development in the later 1/3 of the series simply won't happen.
As for Gilgamesh being evil...
1. Gilgamesh in his own legends was never a good person the way we picture heroes today. He was a hero because he was powerful and his deeds were great. But he oppressed his own ppl like a spoiled brat (which he was, being a demigod), and had many selfish narcissistic attributes besides. I think his characterization here was spot on.
2. Also, we learned that he drank from the grail. This is consistent with his character because in his own myth, he sought for immortality. Even tho he denies it, it's obvious the grail corrupted his personality to an extent. The anime shows it by altering his appearance. But its taint faded away before he died, and you can immediately sense the resurgent majesty inherent in the Golden King.

He didnt have a Memory blurr coz he was lieing to Rin........He Wants to Kills Shirou coz he had made a big mistake.......
BTW i think the best way how Shirou becones Archer is in Fate.......Anime of coz
Correct me if I'm wrong, but since there are a number of different futures of Fate/Stay Night, my theory is that since all the heroic spirits of f/sn became spirits after death to participate in the holy grail war for something they desired, saber could technically rejoin the wars to be with shiro for that desire.
in not positive either but based on the anime..no, saber cant rejoin the war. they became a servant because of something they regreted in the past when they were alive, so they want the holy grail to fix/undo what happened in the past.
and even though saber didnt get get the holy grail, she accepted what happened to in the past, such as doing her duties as king, but the country betrayed her. so, in the end saber accepted her past and doesnt become a servant anymore. sad isnt it?
I feel very sad that saber has to part with Shirou and she died in her foreign lands/historical time zone. :(
Why can they be together ~
My mind is totally full of doubts and opposings about may aspects of the FSN. First of all I must say I don't know the game, but certainly to me there are somethings that simply are unbeliabable for me, e.g., the becoming of Shirou into archer seems to be immposible for me, I just didn't ever see any hint of that thing to happen, maybe it was the time when shirou was in a recovering and it is possible to see the blades sourrounding him, but a turning into archer...
Well, another one, yep, is that how can it be possible Rin and Sakura are sisters, I remember it was said Sakura was shinji's brother, and by the way, I never see any grieving of her brother's death after Ilya killed him, bat anyway if it is wrong and sakura and Rin are sisters there are thousand of questions about it.
Another topic is why the hell on earth kotomine gave a kid an important armor that would finish his life, and why he didn't know that she would be a mage someday, if he even knows Ilya's family background.
Well yes, actually, I agree with everyone that FSN was very slow in the development of the characters and that the fact of not including Rin in the final battle was sellfish because she helped a lot in the series curse, oh, and also, I never knew what was Rin's wish after they got the Grial, in case she and archer win the war.
Letting that aside, I loved this serie.
I'll first say that the similarities bettween Fate/Stay Night and Rozen Maiden are more than what I had thought of it at first.
1)There is a war in which every servant must die, in order to let the last one get his wish come true, and in RM all dolls are suppoused to die to become alice.
2)There is a male "normal" protagonist whose personality at first doesn't seem to be relevant in any sense, and it ends up by being decisive in the female protagonist's final decision apart from the male's own power influence.
3)In the procession of the series there seem to be a love relationship in progress, clearly expressed in FSN, and implicit in the RM's case.
4)There are suppousedly 7 masters and servants to be defeated, but in the end there is an eighth, an so happens exactly in RM with kirakishou.
Well I think those are the most important and I'll finish here my intromission because probably there will be no one who read this, but I'll say I loved this development of this love story -reason why I think it's normal to write FIN at the end, because it was like a literature story make an opera- and despite the multiple questionings about it, It was painful at the end the fact of being separated for the way life goes, and that's why it is beautiful to watch, I hope in RM doesn NOT happen something similar, this would deppress me really much - sorry I know this isn't my personal diary - so I'll stop it jeje, but this was a good serie to watch after all I'll keep on investigating about the rest and maybe...
Sorry to bring up a old post, but could anyone tell me what the song name of the eps 24's ending is called? I can't seem to find it anywhere.
Thanks
Imo this anime is quite good, quality is not that awesome or anything but story... i mean come on people... i wasn't this depressed since i watched Elfen Lieds ending...at least there was hope of reunion of Kouta nad Lucy. In Fate Stay Night... i witnessed a bitter ending... personally i wanted Shirou and Arthuria(Saber) to be together... that was quite sad. Imo Shirou should have offered Saber to choose what she wanted to do with the Grail...but still, despite anything, there is still hope for their reunion! ;)
danggg i havent seen this webpage forever...
hey uhh.... "b1i7z"
i believe the song hasnt come out yet but the singer is..."Tainaka Sachi"
haha...i wrote alot of comments about this a looong time ago, and ive been looking for this song also....well good luck finding it byebye ^^
i actually dont understand, how come Saber died in the end?? Did Shiro know that she's going to die?? If he knows that, will he still let Saber destroy the Holy Grail??
Yeah, he knew. But he didn't have much choice. He had only one command spell left, and even if Saber had been willing to drink from the Grail without one, remember who told Shiro it would work? Kotomine -- hardly a reliable source. Besides, later on he explains that the Grail's only power is destruction, so it seems unlikely it could preserve Saber (especially after its own destruction).

I really hate these kinds of endings, why could't type moon make a way for a happier one???!!!
I think they should've added a final scene in the end of the closing credits where Shirou and Saber meets again...after all the legend of king arthur states that 'she' only went to sleep, did not die, and will awake again in the future.
I really enjoyed this anime....I havn't really been so sad at the end since Elfen Lied. It must of been so hard since Shirou knew Saber was going to go back to a country that rejected her and that she will die. I kinda got mad at how Shirou seemed to have moved on but I guess thats expected with time.
I kinda doubt any second season but if there is going to be one would it be on the Holy Grail during the previous year? Like an animation to Fate/Zero? It could show how the Holy Grail was "tainted" by Avenger or it could explain a few things but it would be nice to see how Shirou moves on to becoming a "Hero" and how Rin joins the mages.
the ending was great, overall the story felt weird for me, but the ending itself was a whole different experience. especially when saber dissappears after saying "I love you," then Saber sleeping off, was excellent.
i haven't played the game so i have to say that i really dislike the ending. i'm assuming that don't like it because i really have no idea what was going on.
Here's a quote from memento:
"If a person has not seen the game or at least read some spoilers about it, the likelihood is that he/she won't understand some of the unexplained storylines featured in the series. This includes Archer's background, Rin/Sakura connection, and Illya getting sick all of a sudden."
That is exactly right. not only do i not understand those, but a whole bunch of other stuff as well. So saber's real name is Arthur? A girl is the king and everyone knows that? Who the heck is Bedevire? Is he just some random guy with a girls voice at the very end and does "Arthur" kill him/her in a flashback? so after a servant dies they go back in time or something? When Shirou dies the first time why does Rin say "oh no not him?" Does she like him? How is the ending happy at all, and why are so many things left unexplained? So he admits that he'll probably forget Saber but will still remember that at one point he loved her? that's not too happy. and since saber is a human, why does she not know what dates and stuff like that are? i am so confused. i really think i missed out on something here.
so.... saber will think it was just a puny dream,,,, and shiro will try and forget her....... adn all of a sudden shiro will begin to train for a superman audition by trying to stop a speeding motorcycle.... and tiger being plastic admiring shiros strength.... the saber tells a stupid knight to throw her sword away in a deep lake for nothing.... that's the conclusion?!!?...... how sad
Thanks for the Information....
i realy disapointed beacuse the movie is short episode after all the is beautyfull i expecting that they have nex season of this movie
i haven't watch this anime yet but i'm interested. can you tell me whether this anime contains hentai.......??
i really like the pairing of shirou and saber.... even though fate led them to seperate ways they still loved each other...
i really liked the ending of the show.. it was cool and full of love..i just hope that shirou and saber would find a way back into there love for each other.. so maybe they are in different times they still show they're love for each other...it's so cool...
go to wikipedia everything will become clear
Is Bedivere a guy or a girl? I mean he looks like a guy but he/she has a girl's voice!!
Can anyone Explain what the hell is Saber ?
Ok, here what i know, Saber was a women who took the holy sword and became King Arthur, she fought many wars to protect her country, then why the country betrayed her? and near the end, theres flashback where Saber fights with a person (I believe it is Bedevire) but what is that suppose to meant?
And can anyone explain why Saber wanted to go back to her past so badly?
At the end are very confusing, the Holy Grail is destroyed, Saber should disappeared without going back to past and stop from taking the sword out but how come Saber returned to her past again? and what the hell Saber dreamed of? and the second dream was die or what?
So can anyone help writing a small background about Saber? About what she desire for? About what he wanted to do? About what actually happened that made her want to go back to her past so badly? Please? and well, finally explain abit about the ending...its very confusing that she returned to her past even the Grail is destroyed without wishes granted !!! I just don't get it what is Saber!! :(
this is really awesome anime i like it very much i want to buy a cd of it is anybody selling a dvd of fate stay night?????????? just call me if u had 09284238610
I liked this anime alot it was seriously awesome that it even caught my attention more than naruto, bleach or d gray man but i cant beleive it was only 24 episodes and though it was good i didnt really like the ending it was way to sad and it left me wanting i really wish they would make more episodes or a part two of this series it was one of the best i watched in a while and it would be good to get another story out of it i seriously felt this anime could have went on a lot longer i think shirou and saber not being together was what really dissapointed me most though
My impression of Fate/stay night, is that the story is mainy focused on Saber and her past told and seen through Shiro's point of view. ex. constant dreaming, majority battles r of Saber, Saber has the most screen time (opening n ending included)
Also i agree tat Shiro and Saber pairing isn't gud; however i wuld hav liked 2 hav seen a reunion between older shiro/archer n saber.
misc: based off of lit. n ep. 20 ref. Saber is much older than Shiro 17 yr old (prob in her late 20's or early 30's) = age gap. So it wuld prob. b better if she was paired wit older shiro/archer, 30+ juz n opinion.
I was a little disapointed because I thought that some how Shirou and Saber will going to be together. But that is the story the story was greate. I hope there will be season 2 in the story.
that was great...! i hope i can see it again.
A lot of uncompleted info. All the characters looks great. I believe Saber dies once she said she'll take a long nape. Long nape as in "Rest In Peace"? I enjoyed the ending, but I was hoping that Saber would stay in the present world. A very emotional ending.
In this end, saber tells bedivere to return excalibur to the lake. This refers to the arthurian legend, but im just interested if this is also because she does not want the next king to hold it. In the previous episodes when we look into saber's past from shirou's dream, the men in saber's army say that saber is invincible, but she has no human emotion so they dont believe she can rule them without the emotions. Maybe saber wanted to through the sword in the lake so that the next king could not grasp the power of the sword and lose their human emotions like she did? Id just like to hear other people's opinion on this and if this is wrong, then why did she ask bedivere to throw the sword in the lake? (was the anime just tryin to follow the legend?)
I'm going to have to disagree Snake. Even though they are trying to follow the legend - I do believe she threw away the sword because of the power it held not because of the lose of human emotions. It is a magically sword and I believe that it is not up to the user to pass it down to another future king but up to the lady of the lake.
It would have been interesting if they were to have a manga story of her past/story and how Saber became who she was.
The sword is a symbol of Arthur and as the rightful owner of the sword when thrown into the lake he/she is basically saying "I may now rest in peace", in the legend it states that it may be possible for Arthur to return when it is needed to protect his country.
Why is the ending that way...it really doesnt suits my feeling seeing saber..deaD? or asleep? waiting for to be unlocked again by some another magician..i want shirou and saber to be together on the next season of this Fate/Stay Night...if there would still be any....T_T
would you guys recommend making another one? or lets just leave this matter to the minds of others for their imagination what will happen next?
