Wow, it's hard to believe that we're finally up to this point in this series. Two more episodes and that will be it. It's probably hard for some newcomers to join the bandwagon at this point in time but in case you insist on catching up, I must recomend some of these 'quick guides' to Fate/stay night episodes. Behond: episode 11, episode 14, episode 15 (they forgot the dragon!!), episode 19 and episode 21 quick summary.
The episode begins with Saber looking at the sky and wondering if the stars out there can foretell Shirou's future. She, however, becomes embarassed upon realising what she said and thinks that she sounds just like a girl from a love story. Rin then appears and asks her if she knows about Shirou's whereabouts because apparently Illya's fever has become worse. Rin also tells Saber that she went to look for Lancer's master but it seems someone has killed the Master and took the command spell off her left hand. Since the only Masters left are just Rin and Shirou, they come to the conclusion that Lancer must have made contract with another Master. Saber, however, is more worried about Shirou's disappearance and after finding out from Rin that he has probably gone to Kotomine's church, she becomes even more anxious there because she senses the stench of death similar to the one she felt near the Ryuudou temple.
Upon getting there, she finds Shirou injured in the basement. Before she can get to him, however, Lancer appears and stands between her and Shirou. As the two servants start fighting, Kotomine appears to drag Shirou body towards Lancer and Saber. He then asks the two to stop fighting and that he's willing to return Shirou to Saber. He's also willing to give Saber the Holy Grail if she wants that as well. Lancer is confused to hear this and tells Kotomine that he thought th Holy Grail will only appear once there's only one team left. Because of this Kotomine tells him that the vessel is an entirely different thing. Moreover, since there are only 2 servants left, the grail is close to completion. Kotomine then asks Shirou to answer him if there really was nothing that he feels guilty about 10 years ago. Shirou suddenly sees dead people's hands coming out of the ceiling and remembers how back then he heard other people asking help from him.
Shirou, however, ignored all of them because he was more concerned with saving his own life. This is why he wanted to become the defender of justice because he feels guilty about the dead people that he ignored. He knew they couldn't forgive him. Kotomine then tells Shirou that if he has the Holy Grail, he can redo the event that happened ten years ago as if it had never happened. Shirou, however, refuses to have this. Because it means all of the tears and sadness that people managed to overcame will become meaningless. Since Kotomine can't tempt Shirou, he decides to throw the kid back to Saber and decides to temp her instead. He claims that if she kills her Master, her wish to redo the selection of King will become a reality. Much to Saber's surprise, Shirou tells her that he believes there's nothing wrong with this path. Saber knows that she promised to uphold the King's responsibilities to protect the country but she couldn't do it.
Saber admits that she needs the Holy Grail to do it but she refuses to kill Shirou. She then claims that the thing that she wants the most is Shirou. If she has to disgrace herself in order to obtain the Holy Grail then she doesn't need it. All that she wants is already here. She then grabs Shirou's hand and proceeds to heal him. Kotomine becomes unhappy upon seeing this and calls them "boring" and declares that therefore they'll die here. He makes a signal with his finger and calls Gilgamesh, who turns out to be his partner in the previous Holy Grail. Lancer becomes angry upon seeing Gilgamesh and asks Kotomine if Gilgamesh is Kotomine's Servant. Because of this Kotomine tells Lancer that he's been helping Gilgamesh staying in this world after the last war by feeding him. This is why there is a room full of dead bodies. Lancer demands to know why he wasn't informed about this beforehand but Kotomine simply tells him because he thinks he'll get in fight with Gilgamesh if he had found out about this.
Kotomine then tells the now cornered Saber and Shirou that surely this situation reminds her of 10 years ago. Apparently back then when Kotomine was defeated by Kitsurugu, the Holy Grail appeared in front of him. Shirou realises that Kotomine was the one who actually caused the big fire in Fuyuki city 10 years ago. Kotomine admits that back then all he wanted was for everyone to disappear and the grail responded to his wish by setting fire into the city. Kotomine reveals the grail fulfills a wish only by means of destruction. The Holy Grail that Saber and others have been seeking is actually a cursed vase which will annihilate everything except its owner. Speaking of annihilation, Kotomine decides to clean up the 'trash' by asking Lancer and Gilgamesh to kill Saber and Shirou. Gilgamesh is about to send gazillion swords to Shirou and Saber but before he manages to do this, his attempt is blocked by Lancer who decides to follow his own belief now.
Because of this he asks Shirou and Saber to use the time to make their escape. After Saber and Shirou left, Gilgamesh manages to injure Lancer using his sword attacks. He then hold Lancer together using a chain before impaling the other Servant with a Caladbog. This effectively ends Lancer's life and he turns into sparks. Meanwhile, Saber manages to heal Shirou by replenishing the sheath's Mana. Saber then explains to Shirou that Excalibur's sheath is actually inside Shirou. The sheath has regeneration capability and she believes Kitsurugu placed it inside Shirou in order to save his life during the previous war. Shirou wonders if it's okay for him to use her sheath like this but Saber tells him that she's actually happy that it can save Shirou's life. Saber also now understands why Kitsurugu told her that she doesn't need the Grail. The episode then ends with Shirou asking Saber to help him destroying the grail. Although Saber at first is startled with his request, she tells him that she trust the decision of her Master.
Impression:
I was kind of embarassed having to hear some of Saber's speech regarding Shirou. It feels cheese-tastic although I admit that she is not the kind who'll taint her moral in order to achieve what she wants. But to say that she already has everything that she wants is a bit over the top in my opinion. The good thing about this episode is actually the revelation about The Grail, which sounds quite messed up. It sounds like the rule of equivalent exchange is applicable to the use of this Grail. But in this case, the Grail demands a rather outrageous exchange in order to give its owner the wish. For those of you who followed xxxHOLiC, the Grail operates in a similar manner to the Monkey's paw in that series. Anyway, I kind of feel sorry for Lancer here but glad that they didn't whitewash him. Instead, he protected Shirou and Saber mostly because he wants to spite Kotomine for having another Servant behind his back. But who can blame Kotomine? The Servants in this series do look cool so it's understandable why he wants to collect all of them.

On the penultimate episode of Fate/stay night: Kotomine reveals himself as a lolicon so Saber tries to defend Illya from this perverted lecher.
I does not matter what Goldie says, he's clearly using Caladblog II, which is one of Archer's favourite projectile Noble Phantasms; the original wasn't a spiral. Disregarding that inconsistency, seeing Enkidu in action is quite awesome.
Ahh...why do the cool characters always have to go out with a bang? (rhetorical)
I don't think so. In Fate, Caladbolg has always been known as the Fake Spiral Sword.
the II means it has been modified into an arrow for broken phantasm
LOL. That was too easy. So all of these times Lancer was kept alive so he can bail Shirou and Saber? I kind of feel sorry for him. At least the rest of the Servants got some decent screen time while he was barely in the show.
Not true. The "turning into an arrow" phenomenon is Archer's basic use of tracing. Remember how Shirou turned a stick into a metal bow? Same concept. The "flash glowy light" from the arrow was Archer using Caladblog II as a Broken Phantasm; normally, Caladblog II isn't powerful enough to harm someone like Berserker, but it can do significant damage with its attack raised.
Caladblog I wasn't a spiral; that's Archer's modification to it. Showing Caladblog II but calling it Caladblog I was simply laziness on Deen's part.
OMG! No Rin at all in the entire episode?! That blows...
Caladbolg II is a Caladbolg refined to be a better projectile. The game itself mentions this.
But Caladbolg itself has always been known as the the Fake Spiral Sword.
So we're finally here. I assume next week will be the last battle and probably run over to the first half of 24. Then the rest will be farewell to the characters. It's strange that there's no sense of urgency in this series. What I mean by this is that no one seems to worry that something bad may happen if Kirei and Gilgamesh got their way. And once again Shirou and Saber manage to escape again.
It looks like more and more people are losing interest in the series. It's interesting how hyped it was when it all started.
I think that the series is not bad but all of those expectations placed on it simply ruins everything. Oh well, 2 more episodes and everything will be over.
Kinda confused...I'm no expert but wasn't that chain Gilgamesh used supposed to bind divine BEASTS? Chain that bound the Bull of the gods/heaven and all that. Cúchulainn/Lancer was arguably not even a demigod according to some variations of his myth.
I wonder if Gilgamesh could have been defeated if Saber joined the fight along with Lancer. The problem is that they are not used to fighting as a team, so it might not work, but still, best infantry formation is one with sword at front and long spears at back taking opportunistic stabs.
Cúchulainn is a descendant of Lugh; which is considered to be a Sun God by some.
He's listed as having high (B) divinity in the status menu, so he's considered a demigod and he's susceptible to anti-god phantasms, isn't it so?
>took the command spell of his left hand
This should be "took the command spell off her left hand."
It's all is 26, i can not understand where the story will be going?
People are losing interest cause there is luck of Rin.
Lack of Rin = FAIL.
Well, atleast that's why I am losing interest. And because Sakura is no longer being shown ofcourse.
Well, this is Saber's story line so I guess it's to be expected.
Does this mean we will have sequels of Rin and Sakura's stories?
If yes, THERE iS A GOD!!!!!
This should be "took the command spell off her left hand."
Lancer's original master was a girl? It couldn't tell because the language used in the episode wasn't gender-specific. Oh well, I've fixed it now. Thank you for the correction. It's really appreciated.
Demon Eyes, I like Sakura, and I want to see Black Saber, but Type-Moon or whatever will be make its own end that what I think.
Uhm...I just found from a particular website what is going to happen at the end of the series,
Spoiler starts"
"The final battle. Ilya has been kidnapped by Kotomine because she was actually the vessel of the Holy Grail. Rin is heavily wounded. Shirou returns Saber's last Noble Phantasm, Avalon, the sheath of Excalibur, back to her before the final battle. Saber fights Gilgamesh and Shirou fights Kotomine. They both use Avalon at the same time, nullifies their enemies' attack, and defeat them. They destroy the evil contents of the Holy Grail so it will be never used again. Saber made a decision to return to her time and end her life the way it was. Shirou respects her decision and sees her off."

Sounds like the Fate scenario to me - which means that Ilya lives... although I'm still surprised we didn't see her calling out for Onii-chan.

And Ilya goes to live with Taiga-nee, since they're both of similar mental ages.. and this keeps Shirou away from the loli at the end. :D The Harem Master ends up without anyone, IIRC - not even Sakura, really.

Slader:
I read your post, but let me say:
In a previous ep, Kotomine told Shirou Saber has to drink of the H.G. to stay with him. In this ep, it seemed Saber decided to stay with Shirou after the war is over. Then Shirou and Saber agree to destroy the Holy Grail. So how is this going to work?
SPOILER ENDS
>> Flopstall, that's a good question indeed...
Well, Shirou and Saber decided to destroy the Holy Grail after hearing Kotomine’s words. It’s like when Shirou discover in the game that the Holy Grail is not almighty, because can’t grant another life to Servants (something that changes “supposedly” for the anime series, but I think Kotomine was lied with that). This War is heading to the end… Ilya has come out to play her part; Kotomine, Gilgamesh, Shirou and Saber are ready for a final battle, and then… and then only the staff of Fate/Stay Night anime know how is going to end.
Let me re-phrase that:
Saber did not come right out and say that she will stay with Shirou after the war is over, but did finally agree that trying to redo the past was futile. However, she did say she wantd to carry through to the end one unfulfilled dream and then we see Shirou's picture. So is that the same thing as her plainly saying she wants to be with Shirou? Perhaps she will still drink of the H.G. - perhaps the H.G. molds itself to the spirit of the winner? I don't think Kotomine should say that the H.G. is a destructive weapon - he only saw it being "won" once and he touched it with evil in his heart. He did say at one point that only Servants should touch it. Or is Shirou going to end up like the heroine of Vision of Escaflowne?
I think that Saber will stay with Shiro because I think they will start another series off of that. I mean, this series has become very popular and type-moon can't really ignore its following.
Remember the fight between Saber and Assassin? Very fast but so awesome to watch, I suspect another sequence of a fight will ensue at the same pace. The battle all together should be an episode, I'm saying that a very detailed sequence will be present.
I don't think so, Xaun. What makes me wonder about is why J.C.STAFF made those episodes with Assassin vs. Saber so detailed and impressive. I watch ep. 18 over and over again, because of this amazing fight. But I don't think that they will do it similar in those last 2 episodes. Most there will be description of the happenings back 10 years and what's about with the grail at least. And the relationship between Shirou and Saber (maybe Rin, too)...
Meh, I'll watch them tough.
Hahaha, the picture with the smiling cup is hilarious!
Amazing anime, I wonder when episode 23 will come out, plz tell me.
Okay, knowing what Ilya is "designed for," is it even possible for her to actually win the Holy Grail?
