This is an excellent episode, which serves to prove that the first one wasn't a fluke. Having said that, there are several inconsistencies in the animation, mostly from the character design in the first half of the episode. There are occasions where several characters' face looks a bit off-key. It's not bad by any means but it annoys me regardless. I supposed this is a trade-off that is necessary to facilitate the battle scene in the second half of the story. Nevertheless, I wish that there was enough budget to produce the nice battle scenes while still maintaining the excellent and consistent character drawing from the first episode. Anyway, this is not a dismissal of the production value, which is still excellent in general. The second half of the episode is good-looking and a certain character's first appearance is as awesome as I expected it to be.

The episode begins with a flashback where Rin receives a necklace from her father before he left for a previous Holy War battle. Her father never comes back from the battle but before he left, he managed to tell her that it's her duty as a Tohsaka to obtain the Holy Grail. In the present day, Rin aweakes in the middle of the night and upon looking at her necklace becomes depressed at the fact that she failed to summon Saber. Her unhappiness continues up to the next morning, much to Archer's slight annoyance. She, however, is a bit entertained with the fact that Archer makes a great tea. Having said that, since Archer comes from one of the archers classes, Rin wants to know about Archer's real identity. After a while, however, she realises that Archer doesn't remember his real identity/history. Archer thinks that Rin's imperfect use of summoning that caused him to be this way. Rin, of course, becomes angry and retorts that he's the one who doesn't remember his own identity.

Archer merely shrugs it off and tells her not to worry about it. Rin, however, argues that she worries about it because she doesn't know Archer's strength level. Archer decides to change tactic and tells Rin that she's an excellent master so they should be okay. Smooth, very smooth. :D Rin decides to change the subjects and points out to Archer that in the war for the Holy Grail there are 7 Masters and 7 Servants so she wonders if all 7 have gathered. Meanwhile, at Shirou's house, Fujimura-sensei is enjoying the fact that she gets to score some free food here. Shirou is grumpy about this and tells his teacher to prepare her own bento instead of relying on Sakura. But Sakura, being the nice girl that she is, doesn't mind doing this for the two of them. Later on, however, Shirou tells Sakura that he appreciates that she helps out everyday but she should take weekends off to do things she wants to do. However, she tells Shirou that she doesn't have anything important to do.

As the two approach the school, however, Sakura realises that blood is dripping from Shirou's hand. He thinks he probably injured himself when he worked in the garage the night before and tells Sakura not to worry about it. The two are then interrupted by the arrival of Mitsuzuri, Shirou's classmate who's also involved in archery class. Mitsuzuri tells Shirou that one of their classmates, Matou Shinji, has been behaving like a jerk and causing trouble at the archery dojo. Mitsuzuri believes that this is happened after Rin rejected him. After Mitsuzuri left, Shirou narrates how Shinji has actually been his friend since middle school and also happens to be Sakura's older brother. Meanwhile, Rin is now seen secretly conversing with Archer from inside her class. She informs him that there is an enemy nearby. Because of this, she asks him to be on the alert. She also suggests that they investigate it further until everyone has gone home.

At the same time, Shirou is on his way back home when Matou Shinji asks him if he can clean up the dojo. Shinji's classmates/groupies protest about this since it was him who was ordered by Fujimura-sensei to do the clean up. But Shinji tells the girls that Shirou always liked helping others since he was kid so he should be okay. What a jerk. Since Shirou already promised Shinji to help him before this, however, he has no choice but to do the job. Although from the look on his face, it does look as if he's enjoying the job. Meanwhile, Archer warns Rin that an enemy is approaching the rooftop. True enough, a guy in blue armour suit greets Rin and despite Archer's attempt to stay invisible, this guy seems to be able to see Archer standing next to Rin. Rin correctly guesses that the guy is a Servant and the guy confirms her guess by producing a Lance. The guy quickly makes an offensive attack at Rin so Archer has no choice but to stop being invisible and appears in front of the enemy.

Rin also correctly guesses that the Servant is of the Lancer class. In return, Lancer identifies Rin's servant as Archer. Rin then orders Archer to show his strength right now and Archer in response, produces a black and white swords. The two Servants then begin their battle against one another. Their battle, however, causes large noises, which can be heard by Shirou, who decides to check the source of the noise. Meanwhile, Lancer makes a point that he doesn't know an Archer who can wield two swords. In return, Archer tells him that he knows Lancer's identity. Shirou, who is shocked to see the two has now attracts Lancer's attention. Rin panics upon realising that there is still one person left inside the school. At the same time, Lancer manages to find Shirou, and eventually stabs the kid with his Lance. By the time Rin and Archer arrive, Shirou is already on his last breath. Rin, who feels guilty, asks Archer to follow Lancer and find his master.

After this, Rin decides to check on the victim and is surprised when she realises that it is none other than Shirou. Because of this, she decides to use the necklace given by her father to heal Shirou's wound. At the same time, Shirou remembers the promise he made to his father to use his magic power to protect others. When he wakes up, Rin already disappears and the only thing left is her necklace. By the time he returns home, Sakura and Fujimura-sensei have already gone home so they only left message with his dinner. Meanwhile, Rin finds out from Archer that he couldn't find out Lancer's Master. Archer, however, is surprised that Rin used her important necklace to save Shirou. Archer explains to Rin that the rule states that no one is supposed to notice the fight and therefore, witness must be eliminated. Because of this, Archer believes that sooner or later, Lancer will notice that Shirou is still alive. True enough, Lancer is now seen perching on top of Shirou's rooftop.

Shirou seems to sense his presence and begins to look for weapon to defend himself. He finds the poster that Fujimura-sensei brought and focuses his energy to strengthen the item. Lancer confronts Shirou and tells him that it's not everyday he gets to kill a person twice so he wants to do it right this time. Lancer and Shirou then begin to fight with each other but Shirou loses so he has no choice but to run into the warehouse. Unknown to him, a magic sphere inside the warehouse is slowly being activated. As Lancer corners Shirou in the warehouse, he tells Shirou that he may just be one of the seven. He, however, think it doesn't matter because this is the end. Shirou tells himself that he won't die meaninglessly, activating his seal. Much to Shirou's surprise, a figure appears from the magic sphere and attacks Lancer before Lancer manages to kill him. The figure then introduces herself as a Servant called Saber and asks Shirou if he is her Master. Shirou, who's entranced by her beauty, finds himself unable to answer the question.

Impression:

I am really impressed with this episode. Rin and Archer's coupling are truly interesting and their conversation is always entertaining. Since I'm also a horror movie fan, I kind of enjoy the stalker-movie mood that the last half of the episode produces. Every time Lancer appears, he gives off one of those serial killer vibes. As a result, the scenes where he chases after Rin, and later on Shirou, turn out to be really creepy. The best scene, however, is reserved for the last scene where Saber gets to appear in front of Shirou. I think the scene looks so good partly because of her appearance was staged really well. But I also think that it has a lot to do with the soothing and calming music that plays as she introduces herself to Shirou. Hmm, does this mean my money will have to go towards the soundtrack as well now? Anyway, I can't wait for the next episode and despite Saber's grand entrance, I am still a big fan of Rin and Archer, so team Red/Black for the win!!

Animation quality gone down a bit? I don't think I agree with that - if anything, I'd have said that it was kicked up a few notches, especially in the second half after the eyecatch.

What's most important in my opinion: They managed to create atmosphere and tension. Bucketloads. If this is how they'll continue with the story, this show WILL deliver the goods and live up to its hype burdening it. I am VERY impressed.

Don't these people have barrier spell that can prevent normal people like Shiro from finding out about the fight? These people are supposed to be the most powerful sorcerers.

I also haven't played the game so I want to know if Sakura is stucked in her role as breakfast provider as Shiro. I find this annoying because everyone else gets to do something.

Anyways, it's not that Rin couldn't put up a barrier but she just got careless and caught up in the moment.

There are some inconsistencies with the characters' faces but it's probably just me picking up things that others probably won't notice. The problem with excellent production like Fate/stay night is that I usually tend to notice even the smallest inconsistencies.

Well, I did pick the screenshots that look good. Having said that, like I said before, the majority of the episode are well done.

I love the second episode even though I find the raw hard to understand. I agree that Saber looks really cool here. I get the impression that she posseses brute strength despite her seemingly small body frame. It's interesting to compare her to Archer whose strength seems to be his agility. I'm I right or wrong? And how about Lancer?

Sorry for the RPG talk but I think the series has that element in it.

January 14, 2006 | tragicsmile wrote:

Regarding the RPG talk, the game has stats and info that are translated at Moonlit World - highly spoileriffic, however, so be warned! Archer's strength isn't actually agility - it's actually Lancer's (and Rider's) specialty.

I'm happier that they don't - every other fantasy show at the moment seems to have them ^^;

Q: I also haven't played the game so I want to know if Sakura is stucked in her role as breakfast provider as Shiro. I find this annoying because everyone else gets to do something.

Its too early to tell at the moment - Sakura (and most other characters) role as the series progresses depends on if they are adapting Fate, UBW or HF. We'll just have to wait and see, really.

January 14, 2006 | DiGiKerot wrote:

I'm not really sure I'd recommend anyone going to look at the Servant pages at Moonlit World at this point - highly spoilerific is almost putting it lightly in regards to certain characters.

Generally speaking, the Saber class is characterised by being very highly skilled in close range combat and by having insane magic resistance, which puts them in good stead against most of the other classes (which is why they are considered the best class). I guess they'd be most prone to Berserker-class servants brute strength, or being sniped by an Archer-class - speed is probably the main issue.

Archer classes have good eyesight (as we saw in Episode 1) and are good with projectiles. This Archer only really goes in for close combat because he is that damn cool, but their strength is really in terms of range.

Lancers are highly agile close quarters fighters. I'm not really sure about what significant advantage they would have over a Saber (possibly none), as the agility and slightly longer strike range is only useful in certain situations, and they don't typically have anywhere near Sabers magic resistance.

Sheesh, it's really hard to discuss this series without using spoiler warning. So....

*Spoiler start*

I think Sakura will be completely useless unless they somehow incorporate Heaven's Feel part of the story. I can't remember her character being used that well in the two other scenarios. Similarly, I'll be pissed off if they follow Fate part of the storyline for Archer since the ending for his character in that scenario is just a big question mark.

Actually, I've been wondering about Archer's storyline but was hesitant to put it in my impression due to the spoilery nature of it. This version has Rin leaving her necklace to Shirou. I think this suggests that the anime will probably head towards Unlimited Blade scenario at least for Archer's story.

*spoiler ends*

January 14, 2006 | Rift wrote:

Anyone else notice how Rin just seems apologetic when she finds out Lancer killed Shirou, but changes her tune entirely when she sees who it was? She didn't plan to use the necklace at all until she saw it was Shirou...

And although Lancer does put off really crazy serial killer vibes this episode, I don't think he's actually bad a guy... he really is just following the rules of the game. Hopefully his personality will get fleshed out a bit as the story proceeds, even though he is one of the main villain-type characters.

The most interesting ability (I think, at least) of the Archer class is that they are the only ones (maybe Caster can do this) who have Independent Action, which means they can remain in the world for a while even after their master dies.

Now then...

*Spoiler start*

I'm pretty sure we'll find out Archer's true identity, especially after the little conversation at the beginning of the episode about how he doesn't remember it. Coupling that with Shirou's obsession with being a super hero, and I'd say UBW has a fairly good chance of happening... Afterall, who can forget Archer casting UBW in curtain riser? ...of course, curtain riser (if I remember correctly) had Archer fighting Berserker... and anyone who's played the game know how that goes.

I'm really hoping that Sakura's role gets expanded. She's such an interesting character, it would be a complete waste not to explore the Heaven's Feel scenario at all... which I imagine will probably be the ending of the anime series (it is the most dramatic). Also, with all of Kirisugu's philosophical babble about "saving one person means not being able to save another" and other indications that Shirou will have to question his rather simple-minded philosophy, some UBW and HF seems inevitable... or so I hope.

As for Archer, I am not too sure about it either. But in my opinion:

*spoiler starts*

Since he's a summoned being, even if he dies now, he can probably be summoned again in the next Holy War battle.

*spoiler ends*

The actual explanation is kind of complex since it involves time travel paradox, the concept of hero's spirit, and on top of this, I get the impression that Hollow/Ataraxia is an alternate universe kind of story. Some kind of a 'What if' scenario. Maybe someone else can explain it better than I do.

It was a great episode. I was actually surprised that the anime left out how archer kept materializing swords in his hand even though Lancer kept knocking them out. It seems to suggest that the anime won't move towards the UBW ending.

It also didn't show Rin using one of her commands (marking on her hand) to illicit "obedience" from Archer when he was summoned. As I recall, Rin uses up all of her commands. Wonder how they'll explain where the first one went.

Hollow/Ataraxia takes place in a four day recursive loop, that's something like a dream - thus, a lot of characters that are dead and shouldnt' be around anymore show up in it. With the destruction of the Holy Grail at the end of F/Sn, there are no more "real" Holy Grail Wars... the Holy Grail War in Hollow/Ataraxia is fake, and caused by Bazette's wish...

But yeah, they didn't show that Rin had to force Archer to clean up after the mess he created. Heh.

I read the spoilers and it will be interesting to see which of the three possible endings they will choose or if they blend all three or two to blind side fans of the game. I just hope that they will not be so graphic about it. Still being based on a game of a genre that has not made its way to the US this should prove interesting since now the question is how they are going to get there.

Nevertheless the endings did seem interesting, I wonder if the story line would be comparable to other games like Halo? I seriously doubt that H-games have much potential for commecrial success in the US since the Gaming community is still dealing with the issue of violence, and with all the competition for gaming dollars Microsoft might just crush them or assimilate them.

CrusaderDamus, yeah, I think they are going to combine the 3 scenarios from the game. I think it'll be hard to follow only one scenario while still developing all of the characters. Some of the characters' background like Archer's are only available in certain scenarios.

Just to comment on the review, Garten you mentioned that "Shirou seems to sense his presence and begins to look for weapon to defend himself. He finds the poster that Fujimura-sensei brought and focuses his energy to transform it into a metallic bar."

In the first episode, when the posters are shown and Shirou tries to hit Fujimura-sensei with one, she picks up the other and wacks him back. Shirou wonders whats in the poster that hurt so much and she mentions that its the limited edition with iron plates. I'm not too sure, but I don't think Shirou can change the composition of something completely. it sounds like he can reinforce the composition though.

January 17, 2006 | Garten wrote:

Ah, I see. I wasn't sure if Shirou's ability is to change composition or to simply strengthen it. I got the impression that he changed it because in episode 1 there is another scene where he picks up a seemingly normal poster but when he drops it back, it makes a cluttering noise. So I thought only one of the posters has iron plates in it. But now that I think about it, strengthening it does make a lot more sense given the fact that his magic power is weak.

January 18, 2006 | Spoon wrote:

If you look at the what he picks up, its an iron bar (no edges that would look like that of a poster). I think he is in the shed at the time, due to the heater that is present. There seem to be a ton of Rin x Saber fans, which is understandable... but...

SAKURA X RIDER FOR THE WIN.

Do they truly have no fans but I?

Overall, I agree with everyone that says there will probably be a combination of the various plot lines. I'm guessing it'll break down something like this...

Saber - The hardest to call. If they really go for Heaven's Feel, she'll become Black Saber... and that's not pretty. Otherwise, I imagine she'll have her FATE ending and disappear in the end. Especially since this allows Shirou to end up with one of his other two love interests.

Rin - Strangely enough, her story requires Sakura's path, Heaven's Feel, not her own, Unlimited Blade Works. Without the sad tale of her and Sakura's backstory, I'm going to be rather disappointed with the show.

Sakura - Most likely the "final boss", of sorts, she'll become the tainted Grail vessel and fight Rin. I'm really hoping she ends with Shirou, as she's my favorite of the heroines (probably beacuse she's the most tragic).

Shirou and Archer - I'm lumping them together for obvious reasons. Archer will fight Berserker, unless Curtain Raiser was really misleading. I imagine he'll surprise, because c'mon people - Shirou HAS to kill him. That's one of the coolest fights of the game. I'm hoping that afterwards, Shirou will still get Archer's arm somehow, and proceed to HF end.

Lancer - We all know he'll die... so it's only a question of how. I doubt he and Kirei will kill each other, because Kirei is essential to the other plotlines. I do, however, hope he fights Archer like in UBW... it'll be a nice role reversal from the first fight, as Lancer will be the good guy that time around. I'm guessing he'll die fighting Gold Archer to help out Shirou and Rin... my big question is whether or not they'll develop his personality at all, like with his crush on Rin and his general skirt-chasing ways in Hollow/Ataraxia. Some Bazette, maybe? Please?

Rider - If they don't reveal her to Sakura's servant, I'm going to be pissed. And that means HF. Another interesting reversal since she'll be a villain at first... and if Saber goes Black, we'll get a reversal of their roles (F/Sn as a whole really likes reversing good guys and bad guys)

Caster - Come on, people. She's obviously going to get have her UBW fate, not just be punked by Gold Archer or Sakura. That's the only way we get Archer's story (so he can get hit by Rule Breaker and turn on Rin and Shiroiu), as well as Souichiro's story.

Assassin - I really don't know here... he'll probably fight Saber at some point, but how he'll die is anyone's guess.

Ilya and Berserker - Berserker will be beaten by Shirou, Rin, and Saber (will we get the... magical boost scene everyone wants? ...maybe hinted at...) His other fates are hardly satisfying. Ilya will live and probably get her Heaven's Feel fate (does anyone want to see Gold Archer rip out her heart? I didn't think so. No one will accept such horrible loli abuse)

Gold Archer - This is tough. Will he die fighting Saber, like in FATE, or will he get his showdown with Shirou and face Unlimited Blade Works? I hope for the latter... but overall, Goldie is one of my favorite characters, so I'm going to be sad to see him die.

Kotomine Kirei - Assuming we get HF, he'll live until the end. Which means he'll fight True Assassin. Otherwise... I don't even want to think of alternatives. HF, please?

On another interesting note... they introduced Neko, even though she only shows up in Hollow/Ataraxia. Does that mean we might also get some other H/A cameos? Karen? Bazette? I hope so...

I'm not familiar with the three story lines, so I'm curious, which one ends with Saber saying, "I loved you," to Shiro?

And another thing, is there something happening between Saber and Shiro in all three storylines? just wonderin.

Cheers ^^ Ja ne

woa... this site kicks ass! Fate/SN kicks ass! but guys... erm any idea where i can find the Fate, UBW of HF games? cause like i just watched Fate/SN, nvr knew there was such a game. When i say find the game i kinda meant Bittorent file/site. i've only found Hollow Ataraxia, and after reading about it at Moonlit's site, i think it's not really that related to Fate/SN right?

i so wanna play the game...

i think HF's ending isn't that nice though, i'd prbably prefer UBW more. it's... cooler? lol.

someone pls tell me whr to find the game torrent files... T_T
