The first half of this episode is rather boring and I hope I can skip it but the second half is exciting and full of fights. Now that the series has reach a half point towards its completion, I really hope that the writers will speed up the pace a little bit. Come to think of it, I wonder why they didn't speed up the pace a bit earlier. As some people pointed out in the comment area, there are many stories that are not yet explored in the series. I think if the animators had cut down those 'Shirou is saved by his foster father' scene, which I think have been on repeat for at least 5 or more times now, they could have speed up the pace a little bit. At first I didn't really notice the repetition but now I realise that they've been using that scene to stall the other storylines in an episode.

Shinji is seen in walking through the city looking angry and eventually acting out his frustration on a poor rubbish bin while Rider perches on a rooftop above. After the opening, Shirou is seen receiving call from Fuji-nee. He then informs Saber that it seems Fuji-nee is well enough to the point of asking for second rounds of her hospital food. Shirou wants to visit her but before that he thinks there is something else that he and Saber must do, referring to Shinji's capture. Saber, however, disagree and informs Shirou that they have no reason to capture Shinji at the moment especially since Shirou hasn't recover from his wound. Shirou, however, insists that they seperate Shinji from Rider before they can erect another kekkai and injure more people. Rin, however, warns Shirou that he needs to be sure of his chance against Shinji. If not, the other Master will gain an upperhand from the fight. Saber tells Rin that she has no problem when fighting with Rider.

However, she thinks that Rider has Noble Phantasm that surpass her own. Saber also believes that Rider's Noble Phantasm is more magic based. Having said that, Rider's Noble Phantasm is not a Personnel-based one like Saber's sword or Lancer's spear. Rider's Noble Phantasm is a large force based. In simple terms, Saber's Noble Phantasm is like a gun shot that can be fired multiple times at once while Rider's Noble Phantasm is like one giant missile. Upon hearing this, Shirou figures out that this means they need to defeat Rider before she unleashes her own Noble Phantasm. Rin congratulates Shirou for being a quick thinker but tells him that unfortunately she has her own business to attend to this time around. Because of this, Shirou and Saber ends up going to Shinji's house but since they can't detect his presence, Saber suggests that they try to find traces of Kekkai. Shirou agrees with the idea and thinks they should head to the city.

Saber, however, tells him that this is also Sakura's house so maybe they are better off asking her about Shinji. Shirou, however, refuses to involve Sakura in this battle so the two go off to the city. During their search, however, Shirou becomes tired so Saber hauls him off to a park bench and forces him to sit down. Shirou agrees to rest but becomes embarassed when Saber sits closer to him. Upon seeing Shirou's red face, she points out that just then the colour on his face changed. Hee. The situation becomes even more hilarious when Saber sees a couple sitting on another bench and the man has his head resting on the woman's lap. She tells Shirou that if he wants, he can rest on her lap. Shirou, of course, refuses and prefers to rest against his hand instead. While Shirou is sleeping, we are treated to another Shirou is found by his foster father scene. Shirou eventually wakes up and becomes annoyed because Saber has let him sleep for 1 hour.

Saber claims that she did it because Shirou needs the rest. Shirou, however, tells her that if he wants to sleep, he'll rather sleep elsewhere. He explains to Saber that he used to live in this area before the previous Holy war took place and killed his parents as well as burnt down his house. Saber wonders if the reason Shirou wants to prevent more war casualty is because he himself was a victim of the war. Shirou tells her that when his foster father saved him, he was really happy. Because of this, he wants to respect the dead ones by ensuring such things won't happen again. Saber tells Shirou that it seems he never seems to care about himself and therefore asks him to pay more attention to himself. The two eventually return to the city and sense something. In the middle of the investigation, however, a projectile comes towards Shirou's direction but thankfully Saber manages to deflect them. Not surprisingly, the attacker turns out to be Rider.

Saber asks Shirou to remains on the ground while she jumps up to the highrise to fight Rider. Saber then changes into her battle outfit as she gets closer to Rider. The two begin to fight immediately but Saber doesn't seem to be doing well fighting on the side of a building. Thankfully for her Rider decides to be 'kind' and moves up to the rooftop. Shirou who sees the two moving up into the rooftop decides to take a lift up as well. Halfway through his destination, however, the lift stops all of a sudden. Shirou decides to get out of the lift and use the emergency stairwell without realising that Illya and Berserker were standing nearby in the darkness. Meanwhile, Saber finally reaches the rooftop and sees the white winged Pegasus. Saber realises that Rider is not the spirit of a great hero but the spirit of a sinister being. At the same time, Shirou eventually manages to reach the rooftop and his presence is quickly detected by Shinji.

Shinji immediately orders Rider to eliminate the two beginning with Saber. In order to protect Shirou and herself, Saber has no choice but to launch her own Noble Phantasm. As Rider charges down on Pegasus and screams "Bellerophone", Saber unleashes a golden, gleaming sword while screaming "Excalibur". Excalibur immediately releases large golden projectile towards Rider. The projectile envelops Rider and Pegasus and eventually destroys Rider's mask, before creating a huge explosion in the sky. Outside Matou's residence, Rin sees the explosion in the sky and realises that Rider has been defeated. She looks concerned as she gazes her eyes towards one of the Matou's bedrooms, which belongs to Sakura. At the same time Sakura is seen murmuring something while looking out of the window. Because Rider has disappears, Shinji's spell books disappears but Shirou fails to catch him because he's more concerned with Saber, who has now fall unconscious due to overuse of power.

Impression:

This would have been a perfect episode had the first half of the episode didn't exist. Thankfully that part is quite easy to forget once Saber unleashes Excalibur on Rider. The way the sword materialises on Saber's hand was unbelievably cool. Although I think the way Saber exclaims "Excalibur" could use a little work. It sounds like broken English as it is now. The question is, did the attack kill Rider or not. This is a big dillema because if the attack didn't kill Rider, then people will question the effectiveness of a large scale Noble Phantasm such as Excalibur. If Saber fails to kill Rider using this, then how do you kill a Servant? However, if Rider has indeed die, then I wonder where to go from here in terms of Sakura's character development. By showing Sakura's presence towards the end of this episode, I think the writers intent on developing her character towards Heavenly Feel side of the story.

However, if this is the case, I wonder if it's possible to do so without the involvement of Rider? I supposed this is up to the writers to decide. Another interesting thing about this episode is Rin's apparent concern for Sakura. Although she never showed it before, in this episode, she clearly looks worried when she saw the explosion in the sky and casts her glance towards Sakura's bedroom. Apart from Archer's upcoming character development, I think this is the next in line on my must see list. I also think the Saber and Shirou's little date is quite cute and romantic. It's not as frantic and innuendo-filled as Shirou and Rin's coupling. This pairing seems more calm and has a slight innocence feel to it which is a nice change on its own. Last but not least, I hope by now people already has an idea about Saber's true identity based on the sword that she utilises.

On next week's episode: Illya tries to pull a 'Nina' on Shirou causing poor Saber to become stressed out because of it. Don't you dare pulling a 'Wong' on us, Shirou!!

Eh, at least the date gets interrupted by Rider, wanting some knife-on-sword action... so it looks to be a bit more eventful than the last fight, especially with both Saber and Rider pulling out their Noble Phantasms. But it doesn't appear that Rider kills Saber, much to Sakura's and possibly Rin's annoyance. :D

And somehow, I don't think we have to worry about Shirou pulling a Sergey on us - he didn't even TRY with Saber, and she was in the same state Nina was when Sergey refused her the first time. Besides, Berserker would probably smash the puny human if he tried... and even TYPE-MOON didn't make their main characters go after the loli.

Ugh. Don't tell me Saber is actually who I think it is. That's just messed up. Especially since 'she' seems to be Shirou's potential love interest.

Her name is Arthuria Celus. In the FSN universe, she is responsible for the legend of King Arthur, the legend simply changed over time causing Arthuria to become Arthur. Kinda like the game broken telephone. Rest assured, 'she' (as you so delicately put it) is all woman.

This looks like it'll become head towards HF, doesn't it, for Sakura's storyline, I mean. I don't think the others will follow the same storyline.

March 25, 2006 | cclragnarok wrote:

No it doesn't look like HF to me. Especially if Rider is dead. Shinji seems to have escaped though, which means HF is not completely impossible.

However, HF is kinda complicated, and I don't think they can fit the story into the last 12 episodes at the rate that it is going.

Actually, with the pace of the first 12 episodes, FATE with small modifications seems most likely. My original theory is a transition from mostly FATE to mostly UBW after FATE's Berserker fight, and it could still happen, but the pace would have to speed up a bit.

Such awesome episode. I am still not sure what to think about Saber's real identity but I supposed it's a nifty twist. The question that I have though is about Rider's identity. It's not mention in the episode and I have no idea what kind of a weapon is 'bellophone' .

Forget the phantasm name and her name for a bit and think about what historical, female, sinister being would NEED to wear a mask. That should help you a bit without out and out telling you. :)

Bellerophon was a Greek Hero who managed to master Pegasus, the winged horse. He lost his horse after he angered the gods by being prideful, and getting thrown off Pegasus as he tried to fly up to Mount Olympus, and while his life was spared by Athena, he remained crippled and mountless afterwards.

Now how they tied this to Pegasus' attack... I have no idea. :D

I can't wait to watch this episode; I'm just slightly annoyed that Shinji seems to survive. Oh well, there's always the chance he will run into Lancer or Berserker while he flees.

I don't think the production staff would kill off Rider at this point in the show, without giving her much development yet dropping hints time about her more noble-personality throughout the last few episodes.

My satisfaction level for the show is still very high, even if it seems that the creators of F/sn are fond of looong talks, and somewhat it breaks the rhythm. The only (very) little rant I can come up now is that there's no Rin/Archer action in 3 eps....maybe they should have made 1 hour episodes to pack some more into it. Or cut the talks/explanations parts a little. But I am overcriticising, this anime is still king in my book. The plot is witty, the animation and design is very good -indeed-, the girls are cute (lovu-lovu Rin!), the music is great,...you get romance, adventure, harem, mahou, epic battles, loli, (omnipresent) school-life,some gore, a (classic) hopeless male lead, flashbacks, mystery...and whatnot ...all minced, mixed, spiced up & cooked together in one show ^_^ .. talk about giant cheeseburgers.
So far tastes great to me.

That tied up scene on the preview would mean that the confrontation with berserker is within 1-2 episodes...

Ah well...nice knowing ya archer...

Still though...there are waaay too much build up on the supposeably "minor" character on the fate scenario to just start offing them like they did rider.

Here is one hoping for some modified storyline that covers at least part of the UBW scenario >_>

From episode 11, it was shown that even if the servant is not "killed", a Master/Servant can be defeated by the Master giving up his command spells. Shinji refused to do that, so with Rider getting "killed", Shinji's command spells, engraved in that book, burned up. If Rider is still "alive", then Shinji has to seek refuge in the Church.

Seeing Rin after that battle made me think she is just using Shirou, even though she seems concerned for Sakura.

thats what i was thinking. whats the connection between medusa and pegasus. aren't these two completely different greek myths?

also in the myth what did the medusa ride. she was famouse as the gorgon who can fight and turn people to stone. i dont get it....

also i was a bit let down by saber identity. i mean its cool and eveything, but turning king arthur into a female was kinda lame. by doing so a lot of the legends behind him/her are doubtful. dont know which, the story kept or invented.

Awesome episode. With all the screen time they gave to rider I thought for sure they'd goto HF, but that's impossible now.

For those of you who are not familiar with mythology, after Preseus killed Medusa, Pegasus (the winged horse) and Chrysaor were born from her remains. Also, keep in mind that the power of a servant is limited by the mana that his/her master supplies. Both rider and saber are not as powerful as they could be with Shinji and Shirou.

If they're using some of Heaven's Feel, as they appear to be, then after the attack, Sakura 'revoked' Shinji's Command Seals, via the book, which explains what she was mouthing while watching Excalibur's searing beam cut through where Rider was, since she was the one who created them for him in the first place, being the REAL Master of Rider. We don't know for certain if Rider's dead, or just severely wounded... but either way, Shinji's out of the fight now, since he no longer has the ability to command a Servant... and with luck, Sakura or Ilya will dispose of him soon enough. :D

Anyone else a little disturbed by the evil grin Ilya wears in the next preview? I almost got the "You've beat the weakest of the Servants out there, onii-chan, but can you beat mine? If you're nice to me, I'll let you live." vibe from that... that or "Let's play hostage-taker and hostage, onii-chan!"

i don't think the first half of the shows is boring, it is really good, the problem is that many peopole think that a show must be only about fighting, and certainly that a stupid idea, because fights must have a reason, fate stay night is a great anime, both the dialogue(story) scenes and the fighting scenes are really good, and this chapter wasn't the exception

Anyways, regarding the whole series, i think that maybe the Type-Moon guys got some things clear after Tsukihime, and this time they are going to include the three F/SN paths in the anime. Just 12 more chapters to fit all that, but still can be done.

As it's been told before, in FSN universe, Saber ( AKA Arthuria) is the one respolible for the legend of T3h Allmighty King Arthur.

*What I've heard, read or listened spoiler about Saber's wish beginz...*

England, all right. Arthuria was the only child of the King of England. But, he passed away for some kind of illness, and the Throne got innocuppied. When she was 16, Arthuria claimed that she would rule over England, but that was refused because she was... SHE. A woman, the king? So, England, without a king went into a war with another countries, and Arthuria, who decided to make training vouches towards the Knighthood, gripped Excalibur and claimed the Throne of England as her own. She, with 17 years led the army of England to victory agains all battles, and everyone recognized Arthuria as one of the greatest leaders of England. But, she went through too much on the war, and she had to *kill* her feelings to fight as she did. So, the country began to get into a state of chaos, because they had a emotionless King(ess). As it happened, England entered a violent civil war, and Arthuria had to kill the people she was sworn to protect.
That's when, in the midst of the Battlefield, the Holy Grail spirit came to Arthuria. And told her that he would grant her any wish if she vouched her soul to the Holy Grail and be a war instrument for that. So, differently from all of other servants, Arthuria made a pact with the Holy Grail when she was still ALIVE, and that's when she became Servant Saber.

- "I want to fulfill a responsability that I couldn't accomplish in my past life."

What wish? Redo her own life.
