This is a fantastic episode that is full of battles and light on talk. I'm also quite impressed with Shinji's VA, who is capable of bringing various kinds of emotion, into his character. It's amazing to think that this is the same VA who voices Takemoto on Honey and Clover. Anyone who has seen that series will know that Takemoto is an all around good guy and his voice couldn't be more different from that of Shinji's. I am also very interested in the soundtrack now after hearing some of the scores that have been used within the series. The one that appeared during a major battle in this episode is one of my favourite. I think the same score was used during Archer vs. Lancer fight back in the second episode. Another favourite score was the one used when Saber appeared for the first time from her magic sphere. I think that particular score has this wistful note that matches well with Saber's personality and background story.

The episode opens with Shirou continuing his training with Saber. Rin is surprised to see Saber exchanging blows with Shirou for 3 straight hours without a single expression on her face. Terminator Saber explains to Rin that when one holds a sword, that person may have to withold any kind of emotion that he/she may have. Upon hearing this Rin wonders if this has something to do with the fact that Saber is a swordwoman. Since female's physique is inferior, Rin wonders if their emotions need to be tougher. Saber denies this and claims that she does not regard herself as a woman. This is because she came to this era to fight and therefore she believes that thinking about gender is meaningless. There is some kind of meta-feminist theme here but since I'm not the expert on this, I don't think I'm going to talk about this further. Shirou, however, looks kind of disturbed when he hears this from Saber.
Rin, however, looks as if she's going to practice what she learnt from Saber. So she approaches Shirou and tells him that the next one is her lesson. When Shirou claims that he's having a break, Rin manhandles him and drags the poor guy out of the dojo. She then orders him to strengthen the lamps as usual much to his chagrin. And just to ensure that she covers all bases, Rin has provided no less than 48 lamps. Rin, however, is surprised when she enters the shed and finds some cookery and cutlery looking as if they've been turned into metal by Shirou. She asks Saber if she's aware of this but Saber claims she's not Mage. Rin tells her that Shirou is not a Mage either. Magic requires equivalent substitution. In Shirou's case, he creates something out of nothing. At the same time, Shirou is in the middle of practicing his magic with the lamps when all of a sudden he gets a phone call from Shinji asking him to come to the school alone.
Shirou foolishly agree to come to the school but when he arrives there, he suddenly feels a heavey chest pain. Upon looking out of the window, he realises that the entire school has been enveloped by a kekkai. Shirou then realises that an entire class also suffers from the same condition. Shinji then appears and tells Shirou that he is basically bitter of Shirou and Rin's partnership. When Shirou asks Shinji to stop this, he mocks Shirou by telling him that it seems Shirou is similar to Fujimura-sensei, who not long ago was asking Shinji to call ambulance. Shinji, however, kicked her face instead. Shirou becomes angry to hear this and asks Shinji to release the kekkai. When Shinji refuses, Shirou charges towards Shinji. In retaliation, Shinji unleashes a magic spell from a book but thanks to Saber's training, Shirou manages to withstand its attack. Before Shirou can reach Shinji, however, Rider appears and begins to attack Shirou with her weapon.
While Rider's weapon manages to hurt Shirou, it seems she can't use it to kill him. Because of this, Rider decides to kick Shirou out of the window so that he'll plummet down into the ground. In his desperation, Shirou uses his command seal to summon Saber and the Servant appears just in time before Shirou turns into a splattering goo. Shirou tells Saber that they don't have the time for explanation because everyone's life is in danger. Shirou even asks if he needs to use another command seal so that Saber will follow his instruction but Saber tells him that it's unnecessary. Because of this, Saber goes one on one with Rider while Shirou goes after Shinji. Shinji tries to get Rider to help him but his plea is ignored by the Servant so he has no choice but to run away. In his attempt to escape, Shinji unleashes additional magic force towards Shirou. Shirou stops and picks up a broom then uses his strengthening magic to turn the broom into a metal bar.
Shirou then manages to cast off the magic force very easily using the iron, shocking Shinji in the process. Shirou finally manages to catch Shinji and as he squeezes Shinji's neck, he asks the other guy to deactivate the kekkai. Shinji thinks that Shirou can't possibly have the heart to kill him. However, Shirou tells him that even though both he and Shinji are only half-mage, Shirou has always been prepared to kill another magician due to his father's advice. As Shirou's grip tightens around Shinji's neck, Shinji screams to Rider, asking her to deactivate the Blood Fort spell. Despite her reluctance, Rider ends up deactivating the kekkai. Shirou, however, is still not satisfied and orders Shinji to hand over his command seal. Much to Saber's surprise, however, Rider breezes in through her defence so she can protect Shinji from Shirou. Saber quickly runs towards Shirou warning him that Rider is going to unleash the magic that she has gathered using the kekkai.
True enough, Rider suddenly stabs her own neck spluttering blood all over the place. The blood then forms a red seal before releasing a bright light that is accompanied by two white wings. The light then destroys the entire floor although Saber and Shirou manage to survive through the explosion. Shirou then passes out due to overuse of his power and dreams of the time when he was saved by his father. Shirou wakes up and thanks a blushing Rin for taking care of him again. Rin then tells Shirou that everyone in school is okay although some has to be taken to hospital. Shirou then decides to visit Saber in the dojo, who chews him out for going off on his own as usual. This time, however, Shirou sincerely apologises and promises not to do this again. Having said that, he'll still fight alongside Saber. The episode then ends with Rin asking Saber why she wears that simple white shirt. Saber smiles tenderly and much to Shirou's surprise, tells Rin that the reason is because Shirou once said that the shirt suits her well.
Impression:
There is no word to describe how excited I was when I saw Saber and Rider confrontation. But unfortunately, as usual the fight was very short and saved mostly due to the great soundtrack. I think the soundtrack did help in making the fight a lot more grander and longer than it really was. I was, however, quite happy to see Shirou and Shinji's fight. Shirou seems to have gone more powerful by the minute and the way he shakes off those black magic was way cool. It was great the way he showed a slightly darker personality, which reminds me of what he would become in the future. I am not too sure though about Saber's character development, which seems to have gone from a seemingly cold killing machine to someone who looks as if she's a teenager in love. It felt as if there is a missing information in between but that will probably be dealt with on next week's episode. This, however, will make Shirou's love life more complicated.
Preview:

On next week's episode: While Rider is busy showing some tongue to knife action, Shirou and Saber look like they are on hot date. At the same time, Sakura looks out of her window thinking what kind of a weapon she should use to kill the other girls.
And so we reach round 1 of the 1st major battle of the Fate scenario. And we get some signs of things to come. Also, pfft, Sakura doesn't need a weapon.
Despite some people bashing on it, I find this anime absolutely beautiful, in the story, characters, music, overall design, and voice acting, too. F/sn delivers the goods, it's one of the very few shows I follow with some kimochi .Slow start indeed, but now I'm loving it a lot, the last 3 eps were top-notch.
Also, pfft, Sakura doesn't need a weapon.
LOL. Well, I supposed she can always rely on sharp nails. I'll bet she wants to scratch Rin's face. :D
... "Smell reminds her of Shirou"?
Oookay... either he needs to shower more, or Servants can get a little obsessive and weird. Of course, Rider wearing fetishwear and licking knives kinda gives me that 'S&M' vibe already. Not that I mind watching her do that, but...
...
At least he summoned her this time, so I guess Shirou's developing a sense of proportion, albeit at a glacial pace. Of course, I suspect SAkura could use her cooking to incapacitate the others, should she delve into the dark side. ;)
Beretta-san O_o ?
The part near the beginning where Rin finds the stuff Shirou has been practicing with in private is worth mentioning.
What?
Shirt Reminds her of Shirou?
That's Rin's uniform for crying out loud. Rin's.
Why would it have Shirou's smell? Really.
OMG!!! Sakuraaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.
HF? HF anyone?
And Pegasus. Why oh Why didn't you share Pegasus with us? Why?
The part near the beginning where Rin finds the stuff Shirou has been practicing with in private is worth mentioning.
I will. This is just a brief summary.
... "Smell reminds her of Shirou"?
Sorry, I was joking around. I should place disclaimer next time around that the brief summary is usually mixed with jokes. It's actually because Shirou once said that the white shirt suits her. Anyway, I've changed it since the rest of the review is quite serious.
The special move Rider executed is blood fort andromeda, right? It looks like it to me...
Can everyone please use a spoiler warning if you're talking about future plots? It's getting harder and harder to distinguish which discussion is related to this episode and which one is spoiler.
You've got some good mouseover's going there. I liked your idea for why Shinji is doing all of this. Maybe he was flunking.
...
Well, at least I can agree with Shirou on ONE thing - the 'elegant librarian' look does suit Saber, That, and Rider does look... ah... interesting licking a knife.
How many episodes are there to Fate/Stay Night?
I think it's been mentioned somewhere that FSN is 26 episodes. I think it's perfect even if the earlier 10 episodes was a bit slow. The story is going to move a bit quickly now.
*Hinted Spoilers*
This is the best episode ive watched among the ten shown. Its got action, suspense, Shirou's manliness(??) and even a tint of romance building up. And also a beautiful song to accompany at the end. This episodes ends with myself grinning cheek2cheek......;-D
I just got one for Sakura,
Boxcutters
it is all the rage these days for domestic goddess
Ah, and I've just laughed my *ss off reading the captions on the pics. The one which reads "this is not a stick this is a sword" practically made me fall from the chair. ^_^ nice ones, Garten!
I suspect the irony here is that Saber tells Rin that she has to discard all emotion when fighting, and that she's put her sexuality aside for the sake of the Holy Grail War... but at the very end admits to Rin that she's a) not set that aside completely after all, and b) that when she's not 'on duty' she DOES both feel emotion... and that she's feeling it towards Shirou, perhaps because he's sincere about what he does... and this time, he wasn't a complete idiot - he brought her out, and he fought like he actually meant it, which probably touches something in her because of what one might call a stubborn nobility.
Plus Shirou was more than willing to kill a mage here, which suggests that he too can set the 'nice' part aside... which is a major improvement over every other episode to date. He didn't continue to beg - he ordered, and backed it up with a display of force which got Shinji's attention... and showed that he too was willing to go to the edge in doing so.
LOL Garten I love your recaps and you know it. But this time's comments on the screencaps were HILARIOUS! It even makes me watch FSN again, after I decided to drop the series a few episodes back. Umm wait, this can't be good! XD
Yay, go for it Rin, make Saber feel what it's like to be a woman ! ^^
-At the same time, Sakura looks out of her window thinking what kind of a weapon she should use to kill the other girls.-
Hahahahaha, indeed. So far Sakura doesn't seem to be doing much other than feeling sorry for herself since Shirou has all these women around him...hope that changes ;)
I really hope Sakura whips out the who-dan (spelling) on everyone really soon. And if she did it with a boxcutter then that would just be a really cool added bonus....
Man... I love your recaps. :)
Onli 1 word to say...GREAT!!!!!!!!
Just because Saber is softening doesn't mean she's like a teenager in love. The character development is to show a softening in Saber's traits, because a cold killing machine is an unsympathetic character, to help indentification saber would have to be less flat as a character as a 'cold killing machine'. i for one believe the development of saber is quite fitting overall
Say, can anyone ID where the sound effect where Shirou raises his head to look at Shinji comes from? It's the one with the hydraulic-like sound, after he deflects the attack, looks up... and then the effect goes off. He's already done deflecting things, and I don't believe he'd dropped the metal broomstick, so I don't think that's it. It almost sounds like a Gundam effect, or when hydraulics are being released... FMP, perhaps?
Still, it's the first time he's gotten his own sound effect, which I suppose moves Shirou squarely into the 'hero' category, since only heroes and villains, IIRC, get sound effects associated with them. ;)
I figured that sound was the broomstick reverting to wood. Though the stuff Shirou transformed earlier didn't revert, so I dunno.
A teenager in love? to me it was more of Saber having newfound respect for her Master
Kudos to Garten!!! I love those captions on the pics. I also died from laughing. Close near death experience.
SPOILER...
Why can't Rider pierce through Shirou?
1) Saber is supposed to be the strongest servant... So, Shirou should be just as strong.
2) As you know, Saber's sword has a sheath. I think Shirou is the sheath. Since they are connected, Shirou must be the one to help her release Saber's true abilities.
3) With the assumption that Shirou is the sheath, maybe the Sheath is in him AND it's power gives him the ability to change things into metal.
This raises my next question:
How did he get the sheath in him?
1) Shirou has no real mage ancestry except for his adoptive father. I think his father choose him prior to his first meeting and hid Saber's sheath in him. (How? He's a magician... Like magic!)
2) The Holy Grail chooses its masters before they are born. He was born with this thing in him.
SPOILER ends...
I'm really happy about this series... If it's heading in the direction that I'm rooting for... Shirou will cut the "no one has to die" attitude. That's just lame. I think that's why he got cut from the favorites poll.
-Vera Out
You would not believe how right you are. But wait...All things will be revealed in time..
Ok, after reading the interesting comments about this episode, I have a question. Did anyone notice that when Shirou got mad and started to fight Shinji, instead of just 1 magic circuit activating, 2 activated ? Been wondering if this shows that Shirou has alot of untapped potential and how much of it we will see later.
