Okay, I'm starting to worry about this show. This episode is funny but I can't help but hoping to see some action scenes here. Admittedly this episode is not a complete lost because in exchange of action and plot development, the episode brings out character development and interaction. I really appreaciate this because as much as I enjoy the comedic side of the series, I think after 10 episodes, the series need to develop its story as soon as possible. As a warning, there is some fanservice included in this episode. The scene in question, however, is far from offensive and unless one intentionally downloads a collage of the character's entire body, the scene will appear to be a simple titilation.

The episode begins by showing the fact that Rin is a sleepyhead who likes to wake up late in the morning. Later on, Fujimura-sensei, Sakura, and Rin are surprised to know that Shirou is not coming to school with them. Shirou at first tries to pretend that he's not feeling well but when that does not work, he admits that he simply has something to do at home. Upon hearing this, Fujimura-sensei tells the two girls that when Shirou doesn't say anything, it usually means that he has something very important to do. Because of this she agrees to let him stay home and goes to school only with Sakura and Rin. Shirou then proceeds to go to the training room where Saber already waits for him. He, however, is surprised to see Saber just wearing a normal clothes. Saber offers to change but Shirou tells him not to bother so the two begin their training. Shirou quickly finds himself in the deep end as Saber manages to hit him over and over again.

After a few rounds, Saber tells Shirou that he better take a rest before continuing but Shirou refuses. This prompts Saber to tell him that in that case he needs to strike harder because unless he deals an equally powerful blow to her, this practice will be meaningless. Upon hearing this Shirou decides to take a rest after all. The rest, however, doesn't seem to help Shirou at all since once again Saber manages to hit him repeatedly. At one point Shirou even loses his wooden sword and ends up charging at Saber empty-handed. What kind of a tactic is this? If Saber had been his real enemy and uses a real sword, Shirou would have died for sure. Anyway, the two eventually take another break and this time around, Saber seems quite happy with Shirou's attempt, prompting Shirou to blush upon hearing Saber's words. While resting, Shirou remembers Rin's word about how Servants got into the Holy War because they too have wish they want to fulfill.

Because of this Shirou asks Saber what Saber hopes to achieve by participating in the Holy War. Shirou tells Saber that he wants to know but doesn't mind if Saber won't tell her reason. Saber, however, doesn't mind and tells Shirou that she's hoping to obtain the Holy Grail in order to fulfill a responsibility that she couldn't accomplished while she was alive. Their conversation, however, is interrupted when Saber stomach growls from hunger. Shirou decides to go shopping for food and purchase several Taiyaki (fish-shaped cake filled with bean paste). While doing this, however, Shirou wonders why Saber looks sad while telling him about her wish. His thought, however, is interrupted when all of a sudden Illya appears next to him. Shirou is surprised to see the girl especially since Illya has come on her own and is simply interested to talk to him. He tries to refuse her but doesn't have the heart to do so after the girl asks him if he actually hates her.

Because of this the two head towards a park where Illya tries to balance herself on a log but ends up falling into Shirou's lap. Shirou wonders if Illya is cold and ends up hugging her when she admits that this is the case. He also ends up asking where Illya comes from and finds out that she's actually an Aristocrat from Von Einzbern castle where it's always cold and snowy. Illya actually hates cold but loves snow because she was once told by her father that her hair is similar to the color of snow. When Shirou hears Illya's story and sees her face, he finds it hard to believe that this is the same girl who is actually Berserker's master. Illya then asks Shirou if he ever receives anything from his father and is surprised when she finds out that Shirou didn't receive magic training from his father. Because of this she wonders if he is actually not a Master. Shirou laughs and tells Illya that he is a Master but not a mage like Illya.

Illya, however, tells Shirou that she is also a Master but she never received a magic training. This causes Illya to question if being a mage isn't a pre-requisite to be a Master. Shirou admits that this is a difficult question for him because the truth is he doesn't understand much about this whole thing. The conversation then change into where Illya is staying at the moment. So Illya reveals that she lives in the woods with her two nun-look alike maids. She, however, doesn't like them because they're always noisy and always lock her in the room when she feels cold or her body is not well. Shirou feels sorry for Illya and decides to offer her half of his Taiyaki. Upon seeing Illya looking happy, Shirou thinks how much she feels like his sister. Their time together, however, ends when Berserker is heard growling in the distance. Because of this, Illya tells Shirou that she has to go back because Berserker is awake now.

Shirou suddenly realises that he's supposed to bring some food for Saber but now it's kind of a bit late. When he got back home, Saber looks depressed despite his attempt to cook some food for her. When Rin returns home, she reveals that Shinji approached her with an offer of an alliance. She, however, punched him and rejected his offer because he's already a partner with Shirou. Shinji is clearly looking pissed off after the incident. Meanwhile, Shirou accidentally sees Saber naked while entering a bathroom. He immediately goes out of the room but Saber follows him to tell him that he doesn't need to worry about seeing her naked because she is a Servant first and foremost instead of a woman. Shirou, however, doesn't buy the speech and decides to flee for his sanity. Later on, Rin decides to train Shirou in magic and pulls out a lamp. She asks Shirou to strengthen a lamp using his power but Shirou's attempt only ends up breaking the lamp.

Because of this, Rin forces him to eat a jewellery which seems to have a side effect of making Shirou dizzy. She, however, asks Shirou to bear with it and explains that what distinguish normal humans from a Mage is the switch inside their body. The jewel is basically used to force the switch inside Shirou's body to activate his magic circuit. After this, Rin pulls out another lamps and asks him to learn replication magic. Later on, while Shirou rests from the training, Archer arrives and begins to aggravate Shirou. Before Archer leaves, however, he has a piece of advice for Shirou. He believes that Shirou has no chance in defeating the other Servants. Because of this, he encourages Shirou to think of ways to outrival his enemy. Archer believes that this is the only thing that he can do right now. He, however, also points out that Shirou is still his enemy and therefore he'll have to kill Shirou one day.

Impresion:

There are actually many spoilers and hidden meaning in some of the sentences that the characters get to say in this episode. However, unless you already know the story in advance, you won't know how appropriate some of the words that characters like Archer get to say here. Archer is not the only one who seems to be doing this because I think Illya actually did her own share of fishing for information from Shirou. Her question about Shirou and his father definitely has a hidden meaning once you think it over. Unfortunately Shirou is simply too naive to realise the meaning behind some of these words. It is funny that he actually went from feeling annoyed with Illya to suddenly feel a brother/sister-ly bond with her. It's a proof that he is actually a good guy who unfortunately can be used easily by those who want to take advantage of his kindness. Having said that, I think some of Illya's emotion while she was with Shirou was also genuine.

Another interesting part about the episode is Saber's intention in joining the Holy War as well as her rather blase attitude in regards to nudity. It was amusing to hear her telling Shirou that she's a warrior first before a woman. This of course doesn't work for Shirou because warrior or not, Saber still assumes the shape of a woman. It also looks as if Shirou actually has a crush on her judging from his blushing when she praised him earlier in the episode. The only problem I have with this episode is that despite all of the character development, there wasn't any action from the character. It seems the writer hellbent on using one episode for a character development and another for pure action. I am starting to wonder now if the series would not have been better told in a 13 episodes series instead of 26. Oh well, next week's episode seems to be a return to the action so it should be more exciting than this particular one.

Have you got a Saber?

If you watch the flashbacks carefully during the conversation between Shirou and Ilya, you'll notice something important.

so I said, are you referring to the shot of Illya and her father? I have to admit that I didn't notice that. But if that is the person that I think it is, then it seems Illya's story is heading towards HF.

I dunno.. .seems like she really wants him to be a brother figure... and the flashbacks of both her father and Shirou's step-dad paired in close proximity is maybe a hint... i think...

I'm kinda disappointed that Garten's missing the 'before I put my hair up' Rin shots, but.. ah well. It's still interesting to see how easily Shirou can get steered off course by just anyone - even Ilya, who's threatened him with death twice now (Ep 1 and
Ep 4) - each time she's met him.

I don't recall if we ever even found out much about Shirou's past or family in the game, so maybe he's reenacting an old big brother/imoutu relationship here which is no longer in effect since his family got wiped out during the last Holy Grail War?

Still, it's nice to see that Saber's rather.. ah.. well-formed all over. Fanservice galore, this episode - but hardly any plot development occurs, which is a bit of a problem since we're about a third of the way through the series.

March 11, 2006 | Garten wrote:

Weils, it's a bit hard to tell without the kanji but よみがえる usually means to revive/to resurrect. So よみがえった is the past form of よみがえる.

If you're interested to talk more about it, please email me so we don't go even more off-topic from the episode.

By, Jove Rin wakes up the same way I do...Still I wonder why our kiddie mage Illya didn't simply swat Shirou with Berserker, last time they met she was winning until Shirou got stupid.

That's right Shirou don't you dare touch Saber you village idiot. She may be Guinivere, but you sure ain't no Lancelot or Arthur. No the closest you get is Sir Robin, … Who had nearly fought the Dragon of Agnor …… Who had nearly stood up to to the vicious Chicken of Bristol …… and who had personally wet himself at the Battle of Badon Hill.

Even if Rin got less screen time than going full monty Saber she gave Shinji what here desereves. That's right Shinji what do five fingers say to yo face? SLAP. Rin is Rick James Byatch.

Spoiler Starts

Looking at the preview I am appalled by what appeared to be Shinji beating up poor Sakura-san. I guess Shinji will try to get rid of Shirou so he can try and get Rin, since he is the cheesy-leather, second-hand, electric donkey bottom biter.

Remember Rin and Saber when you kick Shinji like a rat into traffic.
"When we land against the enemy, don't forget to hit him and hit him hard. When we meet the enemy we will kill him. We will show him no mercy. He has killed thousands of your comrades and he must die. If you find him shooting at you and when you get within two hundred yards of him he wishes to surrender- oh no! That bastard will die! You will kill him. Stick him between the third and fourth ribs. You will tell Shirou that. You must have the killer instinct. Tell Shirou to stick him. Stick him in the liver. We will get the name of killers and killers are immortal. When word reaches him that he is being faced by a killer battalion he will fight less. We must build up that name as killers."

Spoiler Ends

Good grief I hope that's not what they meant when you go Medievil on somebody...Really now if it shouldn't matter then why not parade around like Berserker, all big and scary like. Then again maybe Saber is going for the Beast of Caerbannog approach.

Also note that not even Monty Python can scrape that image (you know which one!) from you mind. No it is burned in there for good.

Ok, the plot moves at really snail pace. But this ep I enjoyed much, alas!
And not for the Saber service (a bit cheap-o, once you've seen the H-game graphics *nosebleeds*), but because Shirou is so funny to watch in between all these events, that look much bigger than him. And the girls keep pestering him, reason unknown. The uber-kawaii loli has appeared, and he even cashes some onii-chan hugging. Wtf, this little luvly thing has tried to slash you in half just some eps ago...using her big Terminator2 stud. And the jewel swallowing scene was also very nice. Ah, and Rin, even if she's on screen for just some glimpses, is QUEEN.

Agreed. I felt the same way during ep 8 as well. Particularly during the conversations Shirou has with Shinji, Rider, and Rin.

Another DEAD boring episode. I just watched 10 right after watching the New Captain Scarlet. Wow sweet JESUS what a difference. Scalret moves forward like a high velocity bullet. Fate/Stay moves like rush-hour traffic. This show is starting to lose me, it needs to pick up bad.

The thing about that is, the action sequences generally take up the entire episode because of how detailed and long the battles are, with only a little dialogue at the end of every episode to discuss the happenings, i think the writers are doing this alternating battle/development not to make a choppy flow, but as a way to balance two equally important building stones of the story.

March 13, 2006 | Chan wrote:

...I'm starting to worry whether they can actually finish the story, even in 26 episodes. I mean, at this point, they should be running from Berserker (FATE), battling Caster (UBW), or met the Shadow. Instead, we're just past the point where the paths branch off.

March 13, 2006 | Haesslich wrote:

Well, only two things relating to the plot really happened in this episode:

1) Shirou gets comfortable with Saber and Ilya - he and Saber get more comfortable with one another, to the point where Saber actually chuckles in his presence and compliments him on his intensity in the (failed) attempts to train him in combat... and Shirou gets to meet another Master under less threatening circumstances than combat or the aftermath of combat... and in doing so gets to talk with someone on the 'other side' without any political plays regarding alliances being tossed about.

2) Shirou gets his magic switch turned on, and is exposed to the possibility of duplication magic.

Beyond that.. very little else happens, which is going to be a problem since we're already a third of the way through the series. I'd have expected another big fight between Saber and one of the other Servants by now - like Berserker or Caster.

Alright. I have not read the manga so if you have don't shoot me down just yet.

*Possible Spoiler?*

Alright. This is what I have seen and it's my anime intuition going off that we haven't seen anyones parents. Hmmm could this mean that since the parent for at least IIya , Shirou and Rin be the same? I mean come on if you look at the implications of some of the things that each has said and also a few flash backs from various episodes. The only parent we have seen clearly is Shirou's adoptive father. Rin had a man that looked similar and so did IIya and so you know it could be something like that.

*Actual Spolier*

Second spoiler is on who Saber could be. I think she is Joan of Arc for some reason just because that is one of the only notable females that I can think of. But then again who knows right she looks like Chris from Suikoden three to me heh.

*End of possible spoilers and spoilers*

Alright then I wanna see some more of servant assassin that is my problem. Well more of any of the other servants like lancer and archer as well. But then again like someone already stated above. I'll take what I can get.

If you really want to know who saber is... go to wikipedia and look up fate/stay night and then her character... you be very suprised. At both saber and Archer.
