Update: Unfortunately I'm a bit strapped for time at the moment so I decided to just post information about the DVD by recycling this entry. As I said before, this DVD is basically released in order to promote the upcoming Fate/stay night series, which will start its broadcast in January. The DVD comes in a deluxe box which also contains a hardcover book featuring screenshots of the DVD as well as some character design sketches. I am also not sure if this is applicable to other people's copy or if it's just Amazon Japan thing but my copy actually came with a large poster featuring Saber. The poster's image is similar to the one on the actual box itself but it's still quite cool to have nevertheless. Anyway, just click and scroll down to read more impression and see some of the scans.

About the series
Fate/stay night is based on a game about battles between powerful sorcerers to obtain the Holy Grail. In each battle, there usually are 7 'Masters'. Each of whom can summon a 'Servant' from the following class: Saber, Archer, Rider, Berserker, Lancer, Caster, and Assassin. The servants are actually powerful being who have to hide their real names in order to prevent their enemy from finding out their weaknesses. The whole storyline itself revolves a little bit around a new awakened 'Master' called Shirou Emiya, who lost his parents in a fire and was eventually adopted by a sorcerer. Emiya grows up admiring his adopted father but unfortunately he can't seem to master any kind of sorcery himself. That is until he inadvertently drawn into the Holy Battle and summons a female Servant known as Saber in order to protect himself.

I wasn't actually interested in this even after the original promo for the DVD was released. That is until a Japanese friend claimed that the story is similar to Battle Royale, which I happen to love. Well, I don't think this is anywhere similar to Battle Royale from a storyline point of view. But as far as the battle is concerned, I guess one can say that it does involve battle to the death kind of story. The interesting part about the story, however, is the characters themselves. Some of them are interestingly linked to one another through various method of story-telling. If there is one thing that worries me, however, is the animation studio that is responsible to do this. Studio Deen hasn't exactly had good track record as of late. Anyone who has seen Jigoku Shoujo will know what I'm talking about. But I'll wait and hope that this will actually be a good series.

Fate/stay night: curtain raiser DVD
This is a nicely packaged DVD that comes in a deluxe box featuring Saber. To be honest, when I first saw the shape of the box online, I actually thought that this is the actual DVD box itself instead of the packaging box. So I was kind of frowning back then and thought that it was kind of cheap of these people to sell something that is quite expensive using a CD case. This is why I was rather surprised when I received the DVD today because the square-shaped box is actually just a packaging box. Anyway, Inside the box, you can find a hardcover deluxe book containing screenshots of the DVD, and the DVD itself, which is house in super jewel case. I am probably one of those few people who love super jewel case, so I don't mind getting the DVD in this case. The DVD cover itself features Tousaka Rin instead of Saber.

This show is one of the major reasons why I failed to deliver Mai Otome 7 on time - I had to repay some favors. Probably tomorrow you'll get to see which.

All of this is looking VERY tasty ^_^ ... Good!

Well, that doesn't look too bad. Although I hope the actual show won't be in that sort of monochrome color scheme. I'm getting tired of shows with these kind of colors (ie. Shana). To me they don't look stylish and avant garde. They just look cheap.

Finally saw this promo!! Everyone looks perfect except Saber. I think her head is too big for her small litle body.

woah FSN anime?

this series is REALLY popular.....it has TONS of figures and gashapon on it already.

November 24, 2005 | Garten wrote:

shinigamitsuki, according to various message board, the series is scheduled to run for 13 episodes. But I'm not sure if this is official or not.

Battle Royale is brilliant, just don't ever watch Battle Royale 2 *shudder*

I'm looking forward to the anime version of Fate/Stay Night far, far more than is good for me. The promo looks fantastic, so hopefully it'll deliver (though some of the shots of Rider look a little cheap).

What's wrong with Jigoku Shoujo?

November 24, 2005 | Garten wrote:

Well, I supposed lately that series is okay. But in the past, Jigoku Shoujo hasn't exactly had the best animation. Even now the series still uses some stock animation. I hope this is because the series doesn't get enough budget though. In that case, Fate/stay night should be okay.

This looks to be nice... darn, I wonder if my list of "to watch NOW" is gonna grow...

November 28, 2005 | Dr Kain wrote:

Aside from the stock footage, what is wrong with Shoujo's animation? It looks perfectly fine to me.

November 28, 2005 | Garten wrote:

What's wrong with Jigoku Shoujo's animation apart from stock footage? Hmm, where do I start? There are inconsistent character design issues to begin with. The characters will look one way in one scene and then look very different in another scene. Episode 3 is the biggest offender of this but you can find examples of this throughout other episodes. There are also times when characters are not proportionally drawn as well and the thing is, these are not intentional. Finally, the majority of objects/places are often non-descript and plain.

I hope the FSN anime does the game justice.

Cool, I like the crisp lines in this anime. I think I'll pick this one up too. Thanks.

...

Is it just me, or does anyone else find the title a bit weird? I mean, it ranks up there with I! Me! Strawberry Eggs! (or however that anime is called)

Oh oh oh!!! Kawasumi Ayako is in it! The trailer is so good that it's almost painful to have to wait -.- So many anime, so little hdd space, time to get a new one soon... muahaha.

Oh, sorry, I've been too busy enjoying the stories to pay attention to inconsistencies in animation. And animation is always inconsistent to begin with, so worrying about it is pointless. Every series has its flaws. The only perfection is imperfection, and that applies to animation as well. Gundam Yu-Gi-Oh!, DBZ, One Piece, etc, all have inconsistencies, so why can't Jigoku Shoujo? Especially when the stories are enjoyable.

November 29, 2005 | Garten wrote:

Dr Kain, you were asking what's wrong with Jigoku Shoujo's animation and I simply answered the question. Now you're suddenly talking about the storyline?

Look, everyone's taste is different and I simply don't like Jigoku Shoujo's animation. I don't think there's anything wrong in not liking it. If you like it that's good. The fact that I dislike it doesn't mean that other people will dislike it as well.

But if you feel like discussing this some more, could you plase move the discussion to the Jigoku Shoujo's entry just a couple entry below? This was supposed to be a discussion on Fate/stay night. We're already off-topic as it is now.

Sorry, I got a little carried away.

Anyway, this show itself doesn't sound all that interesting to me, nor do the designs (ironic, ain't it).

I want the game, and the manga aswell!! ahh this is crazy! @_@

hey, I'm new to this blog and enjoy reading it a lot. I have a question: Where do you get the magazine scans from?

January 10, 2006 | Garten wrote:

Hi Gumjo, if you're referring to the large image, it's from Newtype Japan (as indicated by the watermark on the lower left hand side of the image). I did stitch them together though since the original was spread over two pages. If you're referring to the other images, they're not magazine scans. They're scans of my Curtain Raiser DVD box.
