It's been a while since I talk about games so I figure I should mention the E3 conference a bit especially since it's already underway at the moment. I've specifically created this thread to discuss the various announcement which are of interest to me. Unfortunately most of it will probably be PS3 related since I don't have enough money to purchase all 3 next-gen system. I will probably end up buying an additional console but I haven't decided if it's going to be XBox 360 or Nintendo Wii. Anyway, I'll update this thread from time to time so it may have some additions in the next few days.

Metal Gear Solid 4

What a trailer this one turns out to be. First of all, the revelation of Raiden as a Ninja was surprising on its own. And then Snake, Naomi, Meryl, Colonel Campbel, and Otakon are revealed to be the new version of Fox Hound. It shows how alliance can easily change in this world. Today's friends could be tomorrow's enemies and vice versa. Last but not least is the shocker ending which begs the question how the series will continue from here on.

Sony Press Conference

It's hard not to become a fanboy when I'm this excited. I know that Sony tends to overhype their product but some of the things that they say at their press conference sounds really good. Hard drive on PS3 is default, black is not the only default colour for the console launch, and the best thing is that apparently Sony already has playable game on the show floor! New controller! Well, not really. It's just a wireless version of DualShock but it's better than that stupid boomerang. And apparently there will be some kind of motion detector in the controller. But damn it, they sure charge a lot of money for the console. $499 for 20GB one and $599 for 60GB version.

FFXIII Project: Fabula Nova Crystallis

This is a fantastic news for PS3. SquareEnix has announced that 2 FFXIII titles are going to PS3. The first one is FFXIII, which judging from the screenshot, will be a lot more similar to the current FFXII gameplay-wise. Versus FFXIII, on the other hand, is an action-based game more similar to Kingdom Hearts. Last but not least, there is Final Fantasy Agito XIII, which is a sequel to game which will be created for handhelds. For more coverage of this particular series, check the following links:

Assassin's Creed

This is another nice-looking game from Ubisoft. The trailer shows the assassin in question eyeeing its prey before jumping from a rooftop to bring the deadly blow on its victim. Since this is from the same team that created Prince of Persia, I have high hope for this game.

I can't wait for ffxIII to come out...but 500 bucks for the system, -sigh- thats gonna hurt the wallet. But the graphics look uber good. I really hope they'll have moogles and chocobos...hmm, I wonder what they'll look like with those graphics =3
I have no doubt that'll itll be kickass!

$599? Oh well, I need my Final Fantasy and my Metal Gear so this is a must buy console for me.

May 9, 2006 | Beak wrote:

Hmm, I'm personally a bit underwhelmed. Did you know that you have to buy the $599 if you want to get the HDMI?

May 9, 2006 | outtaloop wrote:

holy crap I completely forgot about E3. Maybe a part of me didn't want to remember because I knew it would be filled with PS3 news and how I will have to sell my soul and take ten jobs just to buy one (and knowing the official prices now, I'll have to add 'selling my organs' too.)

And dear mother of haruhi, FFXIII news already!? And it's three parts!!!?!?!! Just waiting and thinking about XII is bad enough, and now this....sigh....

May 9, 2006 | bluestar wrote:

Final Fantasy XIII looks nice but I don't think I'll buy PS3 until the price goes down. I'll have to starve for a few weeks with that kind of price.

OMG... ffxiii... all I can say is *drool* PS3 here we come!

May 9, 2006 | _Rand_ wrote:

Personally, the more I hear about PS3, the less I want it.

The high end version is too expensive, and the cheaper version is just plain crippled.

Plus the tilt control is a neutered Wii controller that seems tacked on in response.

Also, having not REALLY enjoyed a Final Fantasy game since FFVI (FFIII US) the FFFXIII news doesn't really do it for me either.

Maybye when the prices drop SIGNIFIGANTLY I'll buy one, but for now there isn't a chance.

May 9, 2006 | James wrote:

>> The high end version is too expensive, and the cheaper version is just plain crippled

Plain crippled? Hardly. So it may not have HDMI but unless you have a HDTV, it hardly matters. Most people won't even be able to afford HDTV so it makes sense for them to just buy the plain one. 20GB is more than enough for the inital start up. I assume you can just buy memory card for saving the games. Hell, so far I haven't gone beyond more than 3 memory cards for PS2 games and I have lots of game saved in them.

May 9, 2006 | _Rand_ wrote:

No, its crippled.

Not having HDMI out means it most likely does not support HDCP.

Not supporting HDCP means it is incapable of playing blu ray protected content, which will be virtually all movies released by all major publishers.

This means that the $500 unit is virtually useless as a blu ray disc player, and is essentially a Xbox 360 with a $100 price premium and a tilt sensor.

Don't forget the blu ray drive is the lions share of the systems cost. The only benefit the cheaper system will have over the Xbox 360 at that price is it can put HDTV quality cut scenes on the disks, which for people without HDTVs doesn't matter anyways.

The difference between the 20gb and 60gb drives means little to nothing for me, and I think most people. As you say, save games don't take up THAT much space and 20gb is plenty for them.

I've watched the whole Sony press conference. In the beginning, it started it out really slow saying how much they sold etc etc....then they got to some really innovative stuff...especially from eyetoy. What really amazed me about this new eyetoy program they had was it enabled to summon monsters and such from scanning cards that the eyetoy could read as data. The monsters not only summoned itself...they attack, defend and show some amazing graphics just from the eyetoy. That is probably the most innovative thing I've seen in the press conference.

Final Fantasy exploded into the PS3. Everything looks great. However there is one thing that bothers me about FFXII versus. It has been said that the Kingdom Hearts development team is working on it. This had me thinking a bit because the team has issues when it comes to camera angles. I haven't played the 2nd one to know if they fixed it. From experience, I could say that the first game definitely had problems with camera. FFXIII versus is going to be an action game, which means camera angles are crucial. I just hope they could really be productive and effective with this project.

For those who think Metal Gear Solid series will never end, prepared to be shocked. On the latest trailer of MGS4, a shocking revelation was shown at the end of the trailer as Snake....

*spoiler starts *
that's right, Solid Snake was about to commit suicide by putting a gun to his mouth and pulling the trigger. He claims this is last mission. As the screen goes black, the gun goes off. This sends a strong message that this might indeed be the last Metal Gear Solid game. Another suprise is that Raiden makes a comeback...but as a cyborg ninja to protect Snake...I wonder why....
*end of spoiler*

In closing, I want to comment on the price of the PS3. I'll admit that it's still expensive and the 20 gig model is similar to the core system of 360. I will still state that buying a console at launch is like buying a first edition OS of Windows or MAC. It's going to have problems...big problems. Look what MS found with their 360. They realized they have to fix up their 360 with a smaller chip in order to prevent extensive heating. The new chip won't even come to production until 2007. I recommend waiting at least 6 months until all the problems of the PS3 surface...then make your decision to whether you want to buy it right away or not. Besides, it's not like FFXIII or MGS4 is going to be a launch title. :P

They're release THREE FFXIII games at once? I've lost all respect for Square-Enix. I mean ALL respect. They don't even have the guts to start a new franchise. They could just as easily called this whole thing Fabula Nova Crystallis. But no - "Final Fantasy sell games no matter how shit it is!"

Square-Enix is finished as a company.

May 9, 2006 | Iron Maw wrote:

Except, none of the 3 FF games have anything to do with each other than some similar elements:

And this is not first time Square has showed 3 FF games, since FFIX, FFXI, and FFX were announced at the same time too.

"It's just a wireless version of DualShock but it's better than that stupid boomerang."

It won't be "DualShock" because there will be no rumble. That's right, they remove rumble and steal the sensor idea from Nintendo. Great job Sony, very innovative indeed. That said, MGS4 and FFXIII look amazing.

May 9, 2006 | Merun wrote:

Well, the motion sensor sure is from Nintendo, but here we have a pad, so we won't have the same movement. Just take a PS2 pad and a wireless remote and you will see that it's different. I see a lot of possibilities. It will be a different experience...

May 9, 2006 | Pepz wrote:

I'm sticking with my 360. Don't think Sony allowed to add viberation to the pad because of the huge court case they went through about it. Sony lose an lot of money about it!

Hey guys this is my first time posting on here but ive been browsing the site since mai otome(man that series was wong) Any way im a major gaming nerd and as one i thought i would post.(exspecially since today feels like christmas day and i only have to wait till 12:30 est to unwrap my presant.{for those that dont know thats when nintendo will give there pre-E3 keynote}) Any way while i am a major nintendo fan i still like the other systems. 1st let me point out the motion movement for the ps3 controler is tilt only so it wont be able to compare to the WiiMote.(for those that know about the accelrometer in the nunchuk attachment for the wiimote the ps3 will have movement functionality similar to that.) 2nd sony dissapointed me. They made a controler that doesnt have any signifigant improvement over there old one(if you consider the motion functionality a improvement u might be intrested to know that sony didnt even tell most devolpers about it so the likelyness it will be used is limited.) They announced a price tag out of reach to many people(me included{ i would take that 600$ and buy a computer or upgrade my computer}) i was considering it at 400- 500$ because of the potential of the system but after seeing a ripped off xbox live a controler im not happy with and a system with graphics pretty close to the 360 i would be better off just going with the 360+wii instead of PS3+wii. Also if sony does luanch in november like they are cliaming i forsee a small luanch because they seemed to hold alot of info from devs on a system thats going to be hard to devolpe for. My last comment is MSG4 only looks slightly better then oblivion...

I seem to be a lot more lax about the controller thing than most people are being at the moment, but then I had a Mircosoft Sidewinder Freestyle so am well aware of the fact that the tilt sensor isn't really anything new. Ultimately I don't realy care if its a blatant swipe or not anyway, as long as the implementation works and the games are fun.

Speaking of games, I have great respect for Square over the way they've handled the Final Fantasy series in recent years, mainly because they haven't been lax about completely messing which what they've done in previous games. Its a lot fresher than most long-running franchises anyway.

Ultimately, I guess I'll be getting one eventually - the announcement of MGS4 and FFXIII pretty much make it essential for me. I still think the Wii is far more interesting though.

May 10, 2006 | kiryuu wrote:

Well, for the current round of consoles I ended up with a gamecube and a PS2.

I prefer RPGs (and some action/adventure), so I'll go where the games go.. FFXIII being on the PS3 certainly tilts things that way since it looks to me that SE will continue to develop games on the Playstation platform.

Depending on what the Wii offers for its backcatalog of playable games, I might consider one of those as well.

And from experience, even if I can't use the HDMI now, I'd get the more expensive unit.. Always have a habit of trying to save a few bucks and then buying the better stuff later anyways ^^;

Also, lack of HDMI doesn't prevent you from playing Blu-Ray discs. *if* a company chooses to enforce it, the player will downgrade the rez out the component video channels. So far most studios have indicated they won't do this - initially at least.

May 10, 2006 | kiryuu wrote:

forgot to add..

the reason studios aren't enforcing it yet -

a lot of early HDTV adopters would get the shaft because their sets don't support HDCP.

Don't feel like digging up the relevant articles, but it was stuff that was posted on animeondvd.com a few weeks back

one other thing... main character from the trailer of FFXIII is using a gunblade (or something very very similar to one) XD

I personally think that Sony's press conference was pretty dissapointing. It was kind of boring, what with the Grand Turismo part taking up like 20 minutes. They also talked a lot about sales statistics... Sony did, however, unveil a couple of interesting games like the Final Fantasy XIIIs, MGS4, Heavenly Sword, etc. The eyetoy was also pretty interesting. All in all though, Sony had by far the most dissapointing show out of the Big 3. Their presentation lacked fluidity and direction and it felt kind of like a last minute job (very much like the controller). They also started their conference 50 minutes late -_-;;.

Nintendo's conference on the other hand was interesting and fun. There were a couple of game demonstrations and at the end of the show, they actually invited someone who had previously won a lottery kind of thing to play Wii Sports (tennis) with the Nintendo execs. They demonstrated the capabilities of the Wii remote quite well and some of the stuff that can be done with it. Anyways, Zelda: Twilight Princess looked awesome, as well as Super Mario Galaxy and MP3: Corruption. There were a couple of others that looked pretty cool as well.

Basically, the point is Sony had a pretty lackluster conference. Didn't seem they put much effort into it. Nintendo's was far more impressive and though I didn't watch Microsoft's conference, I heard it wasn't bad either. By the way, you can watch all of this stuff at Gamespot.com.

Looking forward to seeing some of the stuff at the actualy E3 tomorrow :D! So far I'm thinking of getting a Wii and either a PS3 or an Xbox. Leaning towards a PS3 though, since I'm an RPG fan :).

RPG department not lacking either. You got Bioware's (can't remember the name), Blue Dragon, Fable 2.

And the ability to play DOA Extreme 2 is a major plus!!!
