E3 Crumbs

May 12, 2004 | 2 Comments

There are so many game news this week thanks to E3. So I thought I'll summarise some that I'm interested in. The first one will have to be the release of a new trailer for Resident Evil 4. This trailer shows more game footage of Leon getting caught up in different perilous situations. The trailer gives the impression that the villagers are infected with some kind of 'disease' that turns them into this 'controlled puppets'. They are still alive and definitely show traces of intelligence. Some of them will duck or evade your gunshot, some will try to use your colleague (the president's daughter) as a shield, and the others will come up with ways to capture you either alive or dead.

I am also interested in the new PSP (Playstation Portable). I am impressed by how good looking the unit turns out to be. Apparently, the unit will be compatible with both Playstation 2 and Playstation systems although so far there has been no indication as to how this feature will work. Some of the games which will be featured in the system includes a new MGS game called Metal Gear: Acid as well as a new game of Devil May Cry. Each game will be stored within a UMD disc, which can fit up to 1.8 GB of file. And oh, apparently Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children will also be available in UMD format so that people can watch the film on their PSP.

Not everything about the system is gold though. As mentioned before, the system will use the proprietary UMD format to store the game which makes it hard for cross-compatibility with other systems. But it's nothing earth-shattering, really. I kind of expected Sony will use their own peripheral for their new hardware. What annoys me a little bit is the fact that it looks like Sony still hasn't fixed the annoying aliasing problem that plagued PS2. Yeah, I realised that aliasing also persist in both X-Box and Gamecube games (although to a smaller degree) but I just think it's about time that someone, anyone, any company addresses this annoying piece of eyesore in gaming world. Thankfully, the size of the screen will somehow reduce the amount of aliasing that one can see on the screen.

Last but not least, there is an E3 trailer of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. The trailer itself does not contain too many new scenes but it does come with some shots of Tifa, Vincent, and Marlene (the little girl that Barret took care of back in the game). It also appears that Sephiroth is not one of the silver-haired characters that have been featured in the fight scenes. They seem to be either Sephiroth's 'children' or 'brothers' (as in they came from the same lineage as Sephiroth). Their names are Kaddish, Yazu, and Rods. The last half of the trailers is quite action-packed and includes a good Tifa vs Rods and Cloud vs Yazu fight scenes that are accompanied by One Winged Angel full orchestra piece.

Whoa, I'll definately have to check out the Advent Children trailer -- d'you know whether the film will be released in theaters, or just on DVD?

Nah, the film isn't going anywhere near the theaters. SquareEnix decides to give the film a new term. A term which more or less suggests 'direct to DVD' release :)

Well, it's only 60 minutes long to begin with. And after the financial disaster that Square had with FF: The Movie, I suspect they're a bit hesitant to go with theatre route again.

BTW, if you want to see the trailer, the official site has now been updated with the new E3 trailer.
