Devil May Cry 4

Devil May Cry 4 Poster: Dante/Nero

I know this is extremely late but I didn't even get PS3 until very recently so I'm now catching up with games that most people already played. Unless, of course, you're waiting for the PC version of the game because that has just came out a few days ago. To be honest, I was pretty disappointed when I found out that I can't play as Dante right away. Having to play as Nero reminds me of having to play through the majority of MGS2 as Raiden. It doesn't help that Nero has a rather annoying hot-temper personality. I mean Dante is a smug, over-confident bastard but at least he's actually entertaining/amusing and has a lot of charisma as far as video game characters go. The personality of a character didn't seem to be that important in the previous generation games because it's hard to see their facial expressions but it's hard to deny that they are an important point of this generation's games. Thankfully what Nero lacks in, Dante makes up a lot for, so I can't wait until I get to play as him. Before that though, I have to get better at the game.

It's been a while since I actually play this kind of beat-them-up, chain-combos games and as a result, I'm really rusty at it. With most RPGs, you just have to select menus and watch the cut scenes unfolds so it's not really that active in comparison to this kind of game. Despite this, I find that the game's control is a lot tighter in comparison to the previous Devil May Cry games. I can actually string different types of combos mid-air and juggle enemies easily whereas I always have problem doing it before. Having said that, it frustrates me that my combo usually don't earn more than C or B grades. I really have to read up on how to string combo that will earn me A, S, SS. Oh well, at least I actually play as "Devil Hunter" instead of "Human" so I hope I'm not a complete embarrassment. And then there are the bosses. I believe that there are better ways to beat these oversize monstrosity than to charge blindly and beat them up, hoping that their lifebar will go down faster than yours. Oh well, until I'm good enough, I guess I can see how nice the texture on their body. *face palm*

Devil May Cry 4 Wall: Dante/Nero

Speaking of graphics, this one looks pretty good even though it's probably not as good as Metal Gear Solid 4 or Uncharted. I really like the detail given to either the character's clothing or skin texture. Two things that can be improved are the hair of the characters and the amount of polygons for each character. The first is understandably difficult. I personally can't imagine having to animate each strand of hair in a character's head. Still, there's no reason for the hair to look like a mop in some cases (mostly Nero's). As for the second issue, I hope that will improve as more programmers know how to code for current generation consoles. I'm mostly just happy that the main characters look pretty good when they are moving around. There are times when they look almost realistic that I wonder if they are modeled after a specific person/actor. I wonder if the image of Dante and Nero that are used on the Special Edition of the game is game render or CGI because they look pretty good. Speaking of Special Edition, I'm glad that I managed to get it because the box itself worth the extra dollar.

Another thing that impressed me about the game is the work that has been put into the soundtrack. I can't remember if the previous Devil May Cry games have good soundtrack as well but I'm glad to know that there are more than just a typical techno song in it. The most impressive piece is the prologue song, Out of Darkness (5.6MB, 256kbps MP3), which is performed by Kyrie (Nero's girlfriend) in a church/opera house. Maybe it's the Catholic in me but I really like gospel-style songs like this one and I think it fits the game really well. The surprising thing about the song is that the real singer, Aubrey Ashburn, doesn't usually sing this kind of song. Her song is the typical alternative pop kind of songs so it's surprising to hear her in this kind of song. The other performer who also impressed me is Jason "Shyboy" Arnold, who performs Shall Never Surrender (8.4MB, 256kbps MP3), a song which started out in Techno/Rock note but halfway through, it becomes a mellow song that reminds me of songs from the now defunct UK band, Lighthouse Family.

Out of Darkness
Performed by Aubrey Ashburn

Listen to my voice calling you
Calling you out of darkness
Hear the devil's cry of sin
Always turn your back on him

With the wind you go and still
I dream of your spirit leading you back home
I will give my gifts to you
While you're gone and watching on

The light in your eyes is an angel up high
Lighting to ease the shadows' sight
Hearts will grow, the heavens will play
Leaving behind the things in the end

Listen to my voice calling you
Calling you out of darkness
Hear the devil's cry of sin
Always turn your back on him
(On him)
(On him)

PS: Please let me know if I made mistake in the lyric. I had a hard time understanding some parts of it.

Having not played any of the previous DMCs, I felt Nero had a pretty strong personality, especially if you compare him to Raiden or other similar 'not really sure what they're doing' folk. I suppose Dante was just that much more endearing to the fans?

I think the problem with series like this is that once you get the main protagonist, people usually refuse a new character. It's not that different from TV series, really. And I do admit that Dante is cooler, if that's the right word....

Will be interesting to know how Metal Gear series will continue without Solid Snake.

The cut scenes are CGI over real actors, a lot of them are actually the voice actors themselves. Although apparently most of the stunts were done by japanese stuntmen in 4 (due to time constraints I think), versus 3 where Dante's VA actually did the stunts.

Not sure about the actual gaming movement though.

Sadly I've never played any DMC game, but I know all this stuff because I was accompaining a friend while we went to two Q&A sessions with Reuben Langdon (Dante) and Dan Southworth (Vergil) at Fanime. They're really funny guys.

Nero's devil bringer is pretty wicked though, being able to grab enemies and do special attacks on the enemies (especially the bosses) is a nice new mechanic.

I liked DMC4, I got the especial edition when it came out and overall Nero's appearance didn't bother me; he contributed to the story and his cockiness actually made the story interesting at some points. What I and many others did not like was the back tracking that happens midway through the story. You go to place A with Nero, then you go to B and C, then couple of levels later you do the same but this time the order is C, B A.

When you become in charge of Dante he does the same thing and to make it worse you explore the same goddamn level, fight the same both 3 times (sometimes 4 times) and go to the exact same locations that you have already visited yet they expect us to have fun? It is irritating, time-wasting and tiring to no end. If there were cheat codes I could activate to pass them I would. At one point I even considered using a save game to just finish it and select the levels I want to play myself without game forcing backtracking on me. There are perhaps 4 distinguishable levels in DMC 4; the rest is the same level but in different location. That is called bad design.
Anyways enough of me bitching, play the game and might enjoy it more than I did :/

Nero felt like a meh character to me tbh. I didn't feel any need to save Kyirie as their relationship is vaguely romantic to begin with. And in some of the cutscenes she just seems indefferent to Nero. Sucks to be him.

And the height of Dante's coolness will be revealed when...

...you fight him as a boss. He kicks your (ie Nero's) ass in so much style that you just feel pathetic and just want to die. That said, there is a cheap trick to defeat Dante using the environment :p

Anyways, once you do get Dante, you will miss Nero's ability to pull enemies up in the air and combo them down to death. Still, having the ability to switch all of Dante's 'styles' on the go is wonderful :)

And one theory as to why you maybe stringing combos yet getting just C and D is because you may have chosen 'Automatic' at the character selection screen before a mission starts. What this means is that if you press a few combo buttons repeatedly, the game will automatically pull off somewhat complex combos for you without you having to input each key in the specific way.

In the next installment I hope we get to play Lady and Trish along with Dante, instead of some lame new character. A hint of this is given when you unlock the secret ending at the end of the game ;)

Personally though, I feel the DMC 3 was the highlight of the series and had the tightest gameplay. Especially because of the hard difficulty in the western release :p

Is this an action based game? I always preferred those to turn based ones, which is why I never got into Final Fantasy.

I got the game as well first thing I got since I got my PS3 excluding MGS4 but that came with the PS3.
And as for the difficulties if I'm correct you can unlock more? Like son of sparda and such.

That's unfortunate. I hate having to go through the same thing again. I guess Capcom was too lazy to create new areas for Dante.

Yes. Devil May Cry is basically an action/beat-em-up games through and through. There's an element of RPG in the form of abilities that you choose to acquire but apart from that, it's pure action.

T_T And here I thought I wasn't doing bad....

This was the first DMC game I played. I bought it coz i just saw it new released on xbox360 (a while back) and I'd just watched the anime last year, so I thought "why not" and bought it. I found it pretty good :D i quite enjoyed it. I kinda liked Nero from the start when the priest starts to talk and instead he listens to music with his headphones.
Although I did expect them to start with Dante I didn't really mind. But when I got to play as Dante gosh, WOW he was so fun xD but I did miss Nero's all powerful grabbing-enemy-and-slamming-to-the-ground demonic hand :[ but Dante's numerous upgradeable move thingies were really cool and the fact that he can fight in 4 styles, wahaha so kakkoi.
And the animation of the game was really good too ^^ the gameplay and the fight animated scenes, they were so well done i had to go off to find and save them as HQ on youtube xD I also really like the pics you posted lol.
So yeah, since this was my first DMC game, I can't compare to the others, but I wish they would've extended the world/maps a bit more than just going it through once with Nero, then going back through Dante ;_; and I thought Trish and Lady would play more of a role, but meh.
Overall, I really like it and even got my brother to play it, hehe ^^ ty for the songs =D

Two things: devil bringer and blue rose's charge shot. You need to learn how to use them effectively to rake in those stylish points. And while you're at it, remap that shoot button to R2 while you're playing as Nero so you can do charged shots much easier while comboing.

July 11, 2008 | solgae wrote:

Forgot one more thing: Exceed. Learn those instant exceed timings for each combo.

July 11, 2008 | karasu wrote:

Exceed and charge shot are a must if you want to get beyond just B's and C's :P Just reconfigure your controls (switch to R1-shoot with []-devil trigger; being the most common configure, because it allows you to just hold R1 to charge while comboing, then shoot to knock them even farther/higher and helping your stylish rank) (I personally dislike using any of the L2 R2 buttons; it's fine with exceed, but the PS3 controller has that extra large flip button in the back which makes it hard to hold on to, so I use R1 instead of R2 which solgae suggested)

It's from this site:

They have several size but I'm not sure if they have that particular size you mentioned.

Still I dream of your spirit leading you back home.
I will give my gifts to you,
Grow your garden, watch it bloom.

The light in your eyes is angel up high
Fighting to ease the shadow side.
Hearts will grow though having to bend,
Leaving behind all things in the end.

Listen to my voice calling you,
Pulling you out of darkness.
Hear the Devil's cry of sin,
Always turn your back on him.
